2 MAWI LEARNING

Dear Friends,

For the last 16 years, our work at Mawi Learning has been about one thing: inspiring students to create lives without limits.

But as I’ve traveled to thousands of schools across the country and world, it’s not just the students who have inspired me with their creativity, positivity, and big goals: it’s the incredible educators fighting hard to make sure their students are receiving world class educations.

In this 2016 Impact Report, you will meet some of the fantastic educators and students we are lucky to call our partners. You will also learn about the practical solutions we are developing to help our partners conquer their obstacles and build amazing learning experiences for their students.

My story is only possible because Powerful Educators made a difference in my life. Wherever you are in the world, I want to personally thank you for the energy and love you dedicate to your students.

An Inspiring Journey

In 1983, after escaping a civil war and surviving for three years in a refugee camp, Mawi and his family were resettled in Illinois. Mawi overcame poverty, language barriers and personal tragedy to graduate from Harvard University where he gave the 1999 Commencement Address to an audience of 30,000. In 2001, Mawi launched his career as an educator by writing his family’s story in the best-selling memoir Of Beetles and Angels.

What Does Leadership Look Like?

When Ana moved to Florida from Cuba, she entered high school as an ELL student, knowing no English. The year after her difficult transition, Ana created a club to welcome new international students when they arrived at her school. Ana’s club connects new students with friends and educates them on information like graduation requirements and extra curricular activities. In just one year, Ana’s New Student Society helped welcome 40 new students!

Leadership comes from every age, every classroom and every neighborhood. Learn about how Mawi Learning can help you train the leaders in your community.

POWERFUL EDUCATORS INSPIRE LEARNING AND

IGNITE GROWTH

This year, Mawi Learning partnered with Mindset Works to create Powerful Educator: a blended and online professional development course that puts the growth mindset into action. Powerful Educator uses a proven framework to train staff to boost resilience, motivation, and confidence in students. The convenient and flexible course applies research-based training in growth mindset alongside inspiring stories and lessons to build a culture of success in schools.

“This year, our entire administration team and a cohort of teachers have started working through the Mawi Learning Powerful Educator course. As we began our journey, it was important to develop a way in which our teachers could not only learn from each other, but connect and learn from other Powerful Educators from across our state. What better way to connect teachers with one another than to utilize a social platform we are already familiar with, such as Facebook?

Our [Powerful Educator Facebook] page has been utilized to share ideas, inspire each other, provide feedback, enhance learning, connect with other Powerful Educators, all while encouraging teachers to reflect on their own teaching practices... Teachers spend hours of their day guiding, encouraging, and coaching others, while forgetting how POWERFUL they are themselves.”

- Desireé Mosser Instructional Coach, Pasco eSchool

The Powerful Educator course offers these benefits: • Features exclusive growth mindset training

videos from Dr. Carol Dweck

• Leverages growth mindset research and Mawi Learning’s years of proven success

• Offers convenient, flexible, and self-guided blended online learning environment

• Supports a professional learning community or other structured professional development

POWERFUL EDUCATORS IN ACTION

Powerful Educators believe that success is possible for every student, regardless of circumstances. Powerful Educators fight to create opportunities

out of challenges.

It’s the counseling team at one Illinois high school who decided to replace suspensions with Turbo Growth training. Now a “problem” student has

the chance to grow their leadership potential.

It’s the middle school ELL teachers and students who worked together to create the first theatrical version of Of Beetles and Angels. Now a group of students

understands that everyone’s story is welcome in their

classroom.

It’s the Instructional Coach who expanded professional

development for her teachers by creating a

multiple school discussion group. Professional peers are now challenging each other

to hit their Turbo Buttons!

Powerful Educators hit their Turbo Buttons when everyone else is stuck in Victim. We celebrate all the Powerful Educators who are transforming lives.
