** 2016 will be the 49ers second year at the FBS level as a member of Conference USA. 2016 will be the first year the the 49ers are eligible for bowl competition.
** 2016 will signal the end of an era in the program’s short history. The 2016 senior class is made up, in part, by 21 players who were part of the first 49ers team which took to the practice fields in 2012 in preparation for the inaugural season in 2013. The 49ers “first class” includes nine returning starters from 2016.
** The Charlotte 49ers start-up football program took the fast track to the FBS. The program debuted in 2013 and played for two years (2013, 2014) as an FCS Independent before making the jump to the FBS and Confer-ence USA in 2015. The 49ers were invited to be a member of Conference USA in the summer of 2012 – be-fore holding their first practice.
** Head coach Brad Lambert and his 10-man full-time staff have over 140 years of collegiate coaching ex-perience. Lambert (27), assistant head coach Dean Hood (29) and coordinators Jeff Mullen (25) and Matt Wallerstedt (24) each have over 20 years of collegiate coaching experience.
** The 49ers coaching staff includes three changes from 2015: Lambert hired Dean Hood as Assistant Head Coach in the off-season. Hood will serve as Tight Ends Coach. Lambert brought in Ulrick Edmonds as out-side linebackers coach, replacing Napoleon Sykes. Johnson Richardson, who had been Tight Ends coach but assisted with the Offensive Line, last year, will take over as O-Line Coach.
** The 49ers return 17 starters, including second team all-Conference USA selections Kalif Phillips and Larry Ogunjobi. Phillips, the 49ers starting running back, was fifth in the league with 87.4 yards per carry. He ran for 961 yards, despite being limited by injury for the last three games (4 total carries). He had three 100-yard rushing games, including a school-record 204-yard performance at Old Dominion. Ogunjobi, the 49ers starting nosetackle, ranked second in C-USA with 14.5 TFL (1.21/gm) and holds the 49ers single-game (4.5 vs. UTSA), single-season (14.5, 2015) and career (35.5) records for TFL. He is also the 49ers career record holder with 152 tackles.
** R-Sr. DL Larry Ogunjobi has started all 34 games in school history. Eleven returners have started at least 20 games in their 49ers career, including five who have made 30 or more starts: Ogunjobi (34); Trent Bostick (32); Brandon Banks (32); Austin Duke (30), Jamal Covington (30).
** Charlotte’s returning stars include the school’s all-time rushing leader: Kalif Phillips (3113 car. yds; 37 ru. TD), all-time receiving leader: Austin Duke (2634 car. yds; 20 rec. TD); all-time passing leader: Matt Johnson (5293 pass yds; 41 pass TD); all-time leading tackler: Larry Ogunjobi (152 car. tackles; 35.5 car. TFL; 10.0 car. sacks); all-time takeaway leader: Terrance Winchester (9 car. takeaways; 7 car INT).
** In addition to the 15 players that signed in the off-season, the 49ers have a pair of players who sat out the 2015 season after transferring into the program: DB Alex Duncan (Navy); LB Stedman Lucas (Western Carolina). Signees Kevin Olson (6-3; 220; R-Jr. QB, Riverside (Ca.) City College), Jamar Winston (6-8; 265; R-Jr. DL, Hutchinson (Kan.) C.C.) and Anthony Butler (6-2; 190; Fr.; LB, Charlotte, N.C./Vance H.S.) joined the 49ers in January to train during the Spring 2016 semester. Graduate transfer Cody Keith (6-3; 210; QB, East Carolina) also joined the team for the Spring 2016 semester.
** Charlotte’s defense ranked among the league leaders in pass defense (4th, 228.4 yds/gm), red-zone de-fense (5th; 76.8%, 43-56) and opponent third down conversion (6th, 38.7). In league games, the 49ers D was 3rd in Red-Zone Defense (allowing scores 73.8% of the time, 31-42).

The duo combined for 10 of the 49ers 21 offensive touchdowns (Phillips, 5 rushing; Duke, 5 receiving).
** Charlotte’s 2016 schedule opens up with a road game at the ACC’s Louisville (Thurs., Sept. 1) and includes three additional non-conference matchups in September. The home opener will be Sept. 10 vs. Elon. The 49ers will open C-USA play at home, Oct. 1 vs. Old Dominion. Charlotte plays each of the C-USA teams it faced, last year. In 2016, those games will be at the opposite site.
