SIMPLYCHARLOTTEIn referring to the 49ers athletic program, simply use “Charlotte” or “Charlotte 49ers”. The university remains UNC Charlotte, but for athletic purposes, please use Charlotte. For short references and/or abbreviations, use 49ers and CLT.
WHYTHE49ERSCharlotte adopted the nickname “49ers” in honor of the impor-tance of the year, 1949. In 1946, The Charlotte Center of the University of North Carolina (CCUNC) was established as a tem-porary institution designed to handle the influx of servicemen returning from the war. In 1949, community leaders, led by un-official founder Bonnie Cone, successfully fought to make the school a permanent institution. Thanks to that can-do attitude and pioneering spirit, and in honor the year 1949, the school’s athletic teams were nicknamed the 49ers (adopted in 1962).
GoldTies:While the 49ers nickname was brought about by the importance of the year 1949 and had nothing to do with the gold rush of 1849, it should be noted that the first gold discovered in America was found in the Charlotte area, less than 20 minutes from campus in 1799. Charlotte’s mascot, Norm the Niner, is a gold miner, by trade.
WEAREALLNINERSThe university, which felt the embrace of the City of Charlotte, during the #CharlotteStrong move-ment, last spring, is ex-pressing its gratitude for the outpouring of sup-port with its “We Are All Niners” campaign. The 49ers are wearing “We Are All Niners” decals on their helmets.

No. 49The Charlotte 49ers coaching staff recognizes a player each game with the honor of wearing the #49 jersey. The player is selected by the coaching staff for best demonstrating the stan-dards that reflect the culture of the 49ers.
In 2013, the back of the jersey included one of the four G-O-L-D standards: Grit, Opportunity, Leadership and Determination.
The very first player to wear the honorary #49 was also the very first player taken in the NFL Draft. DL Larry Ogunjobi wore #49 for the 49ers inaugural game and was selected by the Cleve-land Browns in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Ogunjobi, who normally wore #65, was the 65th pick in the draft.
Two players have worn the jersey four times: Danny Book and Thomas La Bianca. Book wore the jersey in each of his three seasons, including twice in 2015 -- becoming the only player to wear it twice in one season. La Bianca wore the jersey in each of his four seasons, the program’s first four years.

Dancing, dunk cans, hugs, best friends, fans abound, kids all around. Sounds more like a fes-tival than a football practice.
Who does that? Will Healy does that.
The 49ers first-year football coach is already making an impact by turning some football ide-als on their heads.
Dancing at practice in encouraged, not consid-ered a lack of discipline. Celebrating success is expected, not considered showboating. Hugs after practice is a show of strength, not consid-ered a sign of weakness.
Call it the new wave of football coaching.
As first-year head coach Will Healy has said, time and again, its all about energy, enthusi-asm, passion and positivity.
The 34-year old coach has a different view of football. Perhaps a better one.

He hires friends to his coaching staff – not be-cause it’s best for his friends, but because it’s best for the program.
He welcomes fans to practices, because build-ing relationships is as important as winning games.
He brings his family to practice, to the office, to meetings because – well, family comes first.
He’s heard that the coaching lifestyle means sacrificing time with the family. He’s heard that best friends don’t make the best assistants. He understands that many believe more people at practice provides more distractions.
He’s heard all of that but prefers to look at it in a different way. All those negatives, he turns into positives. Which is his nature.
“When you have passion, energy and enthu-siasm about something and you add that to positivity, you don’t even realize how hard you’re working,” Healy explained. “I think the environment around what you’re doing is con-tagious and makes people want to be a part of it and also gives you some joy in the journey. You work 365 days for 12 guaranteed oppor-tunities and if you don’t enjoy the other 353 days then why are you doing it? Ultimately, the definition of fun is executing at a high level and winning football games but to get there, there’s a lot of work that goes into it and I be-lieve that those characteristics and attributes will help us be successful.”
So at practice, players rock, jump and holler. They dance and celebrate. They give each oth-er alley-oop passes for dunks after turnovers. They chase each other into the end zone after touchdowns.
They celebrate success.

GAME 1Charlotte 49 Gardner-Webb 28Aug. 29, 2019 - Charlotte, N.C.Sellout Crowd: 16,119First game of the Will Healy Era49ers scored 49 points, their most at the FBS level
Charlotte scored five touchdowns in the first half as Will Healy notched an appropriate 49-28 victory over Gardner-Webb before a sellout crowd of 16,119 in his first game as the 49ers’ head coach. Senior running back Benny LeMay and red-shirt sophomore quarterback Chris Reynolds both had a pair of touchdown runs and Reynolds also threw for a three-yard score as Charlotte (1-0) put up its most points in the FBS era. LeMay had 16 carries for 120 yards and the two TDs, including a 65-yard burst to close the first half. That 65-yard TD run is the ninth-longest in school history and the longest of LeMay’s career. It was his eighth career 100-yard rushing performance. Reynolds was 14-of-20 for 136 yards, a TD and one intercep-tion. He split time, as scheduled, with starter Brett Kean, who was 4-of-8 for 50 yards with a TD and two picks. Kean threw a 31-yard touchdown pass to Fr. Micaleous Elder for Charlotte’s final score. GAME 2Appalachian State 56 Charlotte 41Sept. 7, 2019 - Charlotte, N.C.Reynolds with FBS highs of 296 passing yards; 4 TDsLeMay 118 rushing yds; 3 TDsFr. Micaleous Elder 119 receiving yards.
Fight as they did, and they did fight, the 49ers came out on the short end of a high-scoring battle, 56-41, at Appalachian State. Charlotte (1-1) is the first Mountaineer opponent to score over 19 points in Boone since 2017. App State had gone nine straight home games allowing 19 points or less and the last team to score over 40 in Boone was Miami in 2016. R-So. QB Chris Reynolds threw for career highs with 296 yards and four touchdowns -- 49er highs against an FBS opponent -- and Benny LeMay rushed for 118 yards and scored three TDs. “We responded to adversity and there’s a lot of fight in this foot-ball team,” said head coach Will Healy. “We never laid down and that will be an MO of our football team. We’ve got a group of really competitive coaches and players and were going to fight for 60 minutes. We did that today against a great football team in a great environment and gave ourselves an opportunity to win late.” The Mountaineers (2-0) scored on the first play from scrimmage, on an 87-yard run, but first half touchdowns by LeMay of three and 58 yards had the 49ers within one, 14-13, late in the first half. A strip sack recovered by App State deep in Charlotte territory set up a 10-yard score on one possession and a blocked punt was returned for a TD on the next to give App a 28-13 halftime cushion. Charlotte scored four second half touchdowns and clawed as close as eight with 3:17 to play. Reynolds threw four TD passes in the second half, including two to Victor Tucker in the fourth quarter to keep the 49ers within striking distance. App State scored two third quarter TDs to open up a 42-20 lead but Reynolds found LeMay for a five-yard TD and hit Tucker for a 23-yard score with 8:20 to play to cut the lead to 42-34. The teams traded TDs again to make it 49-41 with 3:17 to play.
LEMAY’S SCORING STREAKC-USA scoring leader Benny LeMay scored a touchdown for the fourth straight game. With three TDs, he has multiple touchdowns in both games of 2019 and has 20 career touchdowns, passing Hasaan Klugh (19 TDs) for third all-time.
