NOTESSCOUTING SOUTHERN MISSThe Eagles are coming off back-to-back home wins over Middle Tennessee (81-61) and UAB (64-59). Brittany Dinkins is the team’s leader in scoring (18.0), assists (85), steals (78), 3-pointers (36), free throw percentage (.797) and minutes (30.8). Jayla King is the leading rebounder (7.4) and Lashyra Cotton has the most blocks (15). The squad’s leader in fi eld goal percentage is Shonte Hailes (.510).
The Eagles lead the league in steals (12.0) and turnover margin (+5.5), but are last in blocked shots (1.7). Dinkins in far and away the league’s individual leader in steals (3.7).
In conference games, the Eagles are No. 1 in fi eld goal percentage (.461), but last in fi eld goal percentage defense (.496), 3-point percentage defense (.380), rebounding off ense (29.4) , defensive rebounds (18.3) and 3-pointers made (3.9). Individually, Hailes is tops in free throw percentage (.875).
LAST TIME OUTThe Thundering Herd made 11 3-pointers and held host Southern Miss to 15.4 shooting in the fourth quarter to record a 63-53 win at Reed Green Coliseum on March 5, 2016. Kiana Evans hit four 3-pointers en route to 17 points, a team-high seven rebounds and three assists. Talequia Hamilton also had three assists, while posting three blocked shots in the game’s fi rst 12 minutes. Shayna Gore gave Marshall a big boost off the bench with 13 points with two 3-pointers in 23 minutes.
Brittany Dinkins added 11 points, fi ve steals and four assists for Southern Miss. Jayla King also had 10 points.
MARSHALL IN CONFERENCE USAThe Thundering Herd leads C-USA (all games) in:3-Point Field Goal Percentage Defense: .275Defensive Rebounds: 27.93-Point Field Goals Made: 7.9
The Thundering Herd leads C-USA (league games only) in:Blocked Shots: 5.33-Point Field Goals Made: 7.9
The following rank in the top 10 in C-USA’s statistical categories (all games):
SEASON-HIGHSAsheika Alexander played a season-high 22 minutes in the 84-74 loss at UTEP, while registering tying marks in fi eld goals made (4) and rebounds (7).
IRONWOMANHamilton has been extremely durable and dependable during her season and a half with the program. Not only has she played in all 53 of Marshall’s games during that period, but she has started all of them as well. She has been especially eff ective of late, registering double-fi gure scoring in six of her last eight games. In league games, she is far and away the conference’s top shot blocker at 2.7 per outing, 0.8 ahead of second place. Hamilton’s one rejection at UTEP gave her 77 for her career, 10 shy of Lisa Pruner’s (1980-84) seventh-place mark of 87 in the school’s all-time records. This season, she has been exceptional on the defensive end, registering 13 straight games with at least one block.
HOME SWEET HOMEThe Thundering Herd is 9-1 at home this season, where it averages 77.6 points, .462 shooting from the fi eld (282-for-611) and 79-for-229 (.345) from downtown. It also outrebounds the opposition 44.8 to 35.1 and has a staggering 62-15 edge in blocked shots. In fact, Marshall has won 19 consecutive non-conference games in the Cam Henderson Center. Its last loss was a 72-68 setback against Navy on Dec. 29, 2013.
ON PACEThis year’s Thundering Herd is on pace to set its best marks under head coach Matt Daniel. Currently, they are:
#TEAM1stWins@HerdWBB 4
73.5 points per game (70.5 in 2015-16).430 FG% (.426 in 2015-16).375 FG% defense (.380 in 2014-15)7.9 3-pointers per game (6.6 in 2015-16).324 3FG% (.315 in 2014-15).275 3FG% defense (.294 in 2014-15)41.8 rebounds (38.4 in 2013-14)13.9 off ensive rebounds (12.7 in 2013-14)5.5 blocks (4.4 in 2013-14)2.1 blocks allowed (2.2 in 2012-13)
AKERS GOES LONGMarshall junior McKenzie Akers is fi fth in the school’s record book with 119 3-pointers after passing former teammate AJ Johnson (117, 2013-15). Toni Patillo (121, 1997-2001) is fourth, followed by Cindy McCauley in third (131, 1994-98), Natal Rosko in second (136, 1994-98) and Sikeetha Shepard-Hall (146, 2002-06).
STINGY DEFENSEThe Thundering Herd leads the league in 3-point fi eld goal percentage defense (.275) and defensive rebounds (27.9). In Marshall’s 12 wins, it has yielded just a .332 shooting percentage (244-for-736) and .237 (64-for-270) from 3-point range and has allowed more than 67 points just once (81, at UTSA). In fact, dating back to last season, Marshall has won 18 straight games when allowing 68 points or less (L at Middle Tennessee, 65-54, 1/28/16).
FRESHMAN INSIDE FORCEFreshman forward Ashley Saintigene has been a force around the paint. Saintigene is tied for second in Conference USA with 1.9 blocks per contest, while ranking fi fth in off ensive rebounds (3.6). She is also the team’s leader in rebounding at 6.9 per game. All of those stats have been accrued in just 16.7 minutes per game. The Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., native was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week Dec. 12, Dec. 23 and Jan. 3.
KB WORKS GLASS, ARCSophomore forward Khadaijia Brooks has been working the interior for Marshall in 2016-17. Brooks is one of the team’s leading rebounders with 6.6 caroms per game. She has recorded at least fi ve boards in all but fi ve contests and grabbed a career-high 12 against Maine-Fort Kent, when she also posted a career-high 22 points. She recorded back-to-back double-doubles at Charlotte (12 points, 10 rebounds) and versus Middle Tennessee (11 points, 10 rebounds). She has also greatly improved her 3-point shooting in 2016-17. Last season, she made just one of six attempts (.167). This season, that fi gure is .345 (19-for-55). She went 4-for-4 against Maine-Fort Kent, but then made just one of her next 13 attempts over her next four games. She has since rebounded to connect on nine of her last 15 long-range shots in the last four contests.
BLOCK PARTYThe Herd leads the league (conference games only) in blocked shots (5.3) per game this season and has more blocks than the opposition (or as many as) in all but two games (at North Carolina, at UTEP). Marshall recorded 10 blocks in the season debut at Illinois and followed that with 11 swats versus FIU on Dec. 30. Against the Fighting Illini, redshirt-senior Talequia Hamilton led Marshall with a career-high fi ve rejections. Freshman Ashley Saintigene had three blocks in her Herd debut (all coming in the second quarter).
RECORD-SETTINGMarshall registered 33 made fi eld goals and 88 points in Thursday’s win over UTSA. That is the highest number of fi eld goals the program has made since joining Conference USA and the most points in a league game since Jan. 7, 2007 when Marshall won 96-83 versus Southern Miss.
STINGY AGAINST THE BLAZERSMarshall pulled out a 61-58 win over UAB in its last outing, thanks in large part to limiting the Blazers to a 5-for-24 shooting eff ort (.208) over the game’s fi nal 13 minutes, 24 seconds. The Thundering Herd made life especially diffi cult for Deanna Kuzmanic, who came into the game leading the league in 3-point percentage (.449). However, she made just one of seven attempts from downtown on Saturday. Marshall also allowed just one steal to UAB, the fewest since yielding that total to Fairfi eld on Nov. 15, 2014.
TAKING GOOD CAREThe Thundering Herd committed just fi ve turnovers in the 76-53 win over Florida Atlantic, the fewest for the program in at least 16 seasons, which is as far back as the department’s electronic records extend.
RECORD-SETTING DAY VERSUS MAINE-FORT KENTMarshall drilled Maine-Fort Kent 136-62, a contest that rewrote the program’s record book, once again. The Herd’s 136 points established a Marshall basketball record for both the men’s and women’s programs. The new mark broke the old women’s record of 127 from Dec. 22, 2014, against Brescia which also happened to be the Conference USA record for most points scored by one team in a game. The men’s scoring record is 131 against Old Dominion from Feb. 27, 1968. Current head men’s basketball coach Dan D’Antoni was a junior on that Herd squad. The 74-point margin of victory was a program record, besting the old mark of 72 in a 100-28 Herd win over Bluefi eld State on Feb. 18, 1976. Marshall’s stat line of 55 made baskets, 88 shot attempts, 15 made three-pointers and 65 rebounds were all program-highs during the Matt Daniel era.
DOUBLE-DIGIT REBOUNDSDuring the fi rst seven games this season, Marshall outrebounded every opponent except one (Prairie View A&M). However, only twice did Marshall have a player record 10 or more rebounds in a game. All of that changed at North Carolina, where the Herd had three players all reach double-fi gures in rebounds as Marshall outrebounded the Tar Heels (46-45). Saintigene and Brooks grabbed 11 each and redshirt senior Talequia Hamilton recorded 10 boards. It was the fi rst time since Dec. 30, 2010 that Marshall had three players with 10 or more boards in the same game, a span of 181 games. In that 79-69 win over Elon in the Cam, Veronica Ruiz led Marshall with 12, Tynikki Crook added 11 and Alaya Mitchell grabbed 10.
TAYLOR PORTER GOES OFF AT PENN STATERedshirt junior guard Taylor Porter had a career-day at Penn State (Dec. 3). Porter set career-highs with 24 points, six fi eld goals made, tied career-highs with four 3-point fi eld goals made, eight free throws made and recorded her fi rst career block at Marshall (she had seven in her one season at Murray State). The guard added six rebounds including fi ve on the defensive side. Porter made several key shots to halt Penn State runs and helped keep Marshall with the lead or staying close throughout the contest. The Louis, Ky., native fi nished shooting 6-of-12 from the fl oor, 4-of-9 (44.4%) from beyond the arc and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the line. Porter has not missed a foul shot in the past two games going a combined 12-for-12. She missed nine games due to injury before returning for the Jan. 21 game at WKU.

2016-17 TRENDS
#TEAM1stWins@HerdWBB 16
Matt Daniel, who quickly built a successful NCAA Division I women’s basketball program at Central Arkansas, was named head coach at Marshall University in May 2012 and enters his fi fth season with the Thundering Herd.
Daniel, 40, led Marshall to its third trip to the postseason as an NCAA program, and fi rst WNIT appearance, in 2015-16 and was named to the inaugural Conference USA Coaches Circle as the Thundering Herd piled up 21 wins, the most for the program in nearly three decades. The circle honored all coaches who received at least one for the league’s Coach of the Year honor. Daniel also coached Leah Scott, who became the program’s fi rst fi rst-team Conference USA honoree last season. On Daniel’s watch, the program has gradually increased its profi ciency in scoring, fi eld goal percentage, free throw percentage, free throws made, assists and 3-pointers over the course of his four seasons. The program also connected on 219 3-pointers last season, besting the previous record of 193 set the previous campaign.
In 2014-15, he guided Marshall to a berth in the Women’s Basketball Invitational and captured the program’s fi rst postseason win in the NCAA era (81-79 victory over Northern Kentucky) in only its second appearance. He also mentored Scott and Chukwuka Ezeigbo, who each became just the fourth and fi fth student-athletes in program history to gain All-Conference USA recognition (second team). The stage was set for a good season when Daniel and his staff brought in a 2015-16 recruiting class that was ranked 52nd nationally by BlueStar Report, ahead of Villanova, Indiana, Boston College and Cincinnati among others.
On Dec. 22, 2014, Daniel’s Thundering Herd set a school single-game scoring record in a 127-56 win over Brescia. That mark is also a Conference USA record, giving Daniel’s teams the single-game scoring record in two leagues (Conference USA, Southland). In that game, the team hit 14 3-pointers, tying the school’s all-time record. Marshall guard AJ Johnson also nailed seven 3-pointers, also a school record, and set a Marshall single-season school record when she hit 72 3-pointers last season.
In Daniel’s second season, his Thundering Herd became the lowest seed to advance in a conference tournament when, as a 16 seed, it defeated ninth-seeded Florida Atlantic 80-73 in the opening round of the 2014 Conference USA Tournament in El Paso, Texas.
At UCA, Daniel earned a reputation as a spirited and tireless young coach who displayed an ability to turn around a program, fi nishing his fi nal three seasons at UCA with a 66-26 record.
During his four years with the Sugar Bears, Daniel took UCA from Division II to the Division I level and guided a program that had two consecutive 20-loss seasons (2007-08 and 2008-09) to its fi rst Division I regular season conference championship (Southland Conference), two postseason tournaments (‘12 WNIT, ‘11 WBI) and three straight 21-win seasons. His teams had the best overall and conference records in the Southland Conference over his last three seasons.
Daniel’s recruiting ability led to many of Central Arkansas’ recent successes. During his four years at UCA, he produced two Southland Players of the Year, a Southland Defensive Player of the Year and a Southland Freshman of the Year. Daniel also coached eight All-Conference selections, along with three fi rst-team selections and three All-Academic honorees.
For his eff orts, he was named the 2010 and 2012 Southland Coach of the Year.
Under Daniel’s direction, women’s basketball attendances increased signifi cantly at UCA. Eight of the top 10 crowds in UCA history came in the last fi ve years. UCA led the Southland in attendance, while developing an intimidating home-court advantage that included a 21-3 home conference record in his last three years.
In total, Daniel’s teams have made four postseason appearances and all of his recruits that have graduated have played in a postseason.
The Jonesboro, Ark. native has other coaching experience at the University of Missouri, the University of Colorado, and Texas-Arlington, where he was an assistant coach at each institution.
Daniel started coaching as a graduate assistant for men’s basketball at Arizona State and played collegiate basketball at Colorado and Harding (Ark.) University.
He is a 1998 graduate of Harding University and was Mr. Basketball in Arkansas in 1994. He was named MVP of the state tournament after taking Jonesboro High School to a state title in Arkansas’ highest classifi cation.
He and his wife, Dr. Jennifer Daniel, welcomed their fi rstborn daughter, Steele, in October 2012, and their second daughter, Brett, in July 2014.
