BHSDG FINANCIAL REPORT 2015–2016
THE BERKELEY HIGH SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT GROUP (BHSDG) received over $468,000 in donations and other revenues during the 2015-2016 school year. Approximately 69% of this revenue ($321,000) was unrestricted funds to the BHSDG, to be distributed as grants by our Board. From these unrestricted revenues, BHSDG provided funding for academic, college readiness, and artistic and club programs at Berkeley High School (BHS), including:
BHSDG received approximately $147,000 in donations and revenue earmarked for specifi c learning communities, programs and departments. BHSDG acts as fi scal agent for these funds, at no cost, providing a signifi cant benefi t to BHS schools and programs. BHS schools and programs determine how they will spend those monies, and they were used for a wide range of educational enrichment opportunities.
The BHSDG’s fundraising and administrative expenses were $37,000 for the school year (or ~6% of total expense). We carried forward $25,000 as a reserve for minimum administrative costs and anticipate funding our sponsored programs on an ongoing basis.

The development group responds to my professional needs and my students’ classroom needs in ways other resources are unable to do. They recognize the urgency of issues like equitable funding and staff support.

Fortunately for us, BHSDG is there to provide fi nancial assistance when we don’t quite have the funds to make really important events happen like the Election Convention, Talent Show, and other club-related activities.
–JOHN VILLAVICENCIO, DIRECTOR OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES
The BHSDG grant… enabled me to bring The Make A Wish Gathering to life, giving students a chance to make a wish to better the community… a step towards representing the… reforms students would like on campus. Many… changes, such as new water bottle fi llers, have been implemented.
–GENNA SALDANHA, STUDENT LEADER
With the new computers we are able to be much more effi cient laying out the paper…. Thank you for helping our 100+ person staff of writers, illustrators, photographers, and editors continue to run a student-run publication that publishes professional level journalism at Berkeley High.

MAXIMIZING CULTURAL COMPETENCE IN TEACHINGChristine Staples
CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE TEACHING is a powerful strategy for closing achievement gaps. This student-centered teaching approach ties learning to Berkeley High School (BHS) students’ diverse cultural backgrounds and needs, tailoring instruction and improving classroom climate. The Berkeley High School Development Group (BHSDG) supports culturally responsive teaching, granting over $13,000 to 1) create a customized culturally responsive teaching plan for all of BHS; and 2) conduct “train the trainer” sessions on culturally responsive teaching techniques for lead teachers, who in turn instruct the rest of the BHS staff. The project is slated for the 2016-2017 school year.
In addition, BHSDG granted $8,800 for professional development to strengthen the Chicano-Latino Studies program. Another $361,000 in funding was committed to promoting equity and community building throughout BHS, including: $67,000 to the multi-subject after school tutoring program; $67,000 for College & Career Center services, including funds to pay application and testing fees for students in need; and over $10,000 for universal PSAT testing for every BHS Sophomore.
As BHS Leadership embarks on major efforts to improve our school’s culture and learning environment, the BHSDG has been there every step of the way, providing vital funding to leadership and staff to achieve their goals of ensuring an equitable, rich education for each and every BHS student.
“We’re working to build capacity in culturally competent teaching in our efforts to eliminate pervasive opportunity and access gaps at BHS, so that all students are career and college prepared after graduating from BHS…This is critical work on both local and national levels as inequity threatens the very fabric of democracy.” –SAM PASAROW, PRINCIPAL
I was so impressed [by the college fair]… the numbers and diversity of colleges represented as well as the number and diversity of students and parents present. –TAMARA FRIEDMAN, TEACHER
