Vice Admiral Ronald A. Route, USN (Ret.) President

Naval Postgraduate School

Retired Vice Adm. Ronald A. Route comes to the appointment as President, Naval Postgraduate School with over twenty years of leadership experience at the senior executive and operational level, which included responsibilities in graduate education, program requirements and resources, international affairs, research and development, and ethics.

Route's significant career assignments include President of the Naval War College, and Commander, Navy Warfare Development Command. He also served in two earlier flag officer assignments leading major divisions on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations (CNO): Director of Navy Programming and Director, Politico-Military Affairs.

A career Surface Warfare Officer, Route's sea duty included assignments and deployments in cruisers, destroyers, frigates and aircraft carriers; he commanded the AEGIS cruiser USS LAKE ERIE (CG 70) and the guided-missile destroyer USS DEWEY (DDG 45). His most recent command at sea was the USS GEORGE WASHINGTON (CVN 73) Carrier Strike Group often ships plus the embarked carrier air wing.

Capping his active duty career of more than 36 years, his last assignment was as the Naval Inspector General, working directly for the Secretary of the Navy and the Chief of Naval Operations, where he directed an inspection, assessment and studies program that provided Navy headquarters leadership and major Navy commanders worldwide with important policy, organizational and ethics insight.

After retirement from the Navy in 2008, Route spent more than three years as a senior vice president at Burdeshaw Associates, Ltd. - an executive-level consulting firm specializing in defense industry and government business.

On Sept. I, 2013, Route completed his term as President of the Surface Navy Association, a position he had held for nearly five years. He has also been a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, since 1998.

Route holds a Bachelor's of Science in Systems Engineering from the U.S. Naval Academy, and a Master's of Science in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School. He also served as the Navy's Senior Military Fellow on the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City, and attended the Executive Business Course, Kenan-Flager Business School at the University ofNorth Carolina.

Naval Postgraduate School

Dr. Douglas A. Hensler became the 141h Provost of the Naval Postgraduate School on June 5,

2013. Prior academic service includes Dean of the W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University (2008-2013), Dean and Sid Craig Endowed Dean's Chair in the Craig School of Business at California State University, Fresno (2005-2008), and the W. Edwards Deming Distinguished Professor of Management at the University of Colorado at Boulder in a joint appointment to the College of Engineering and Applied Science and the Leeds School of Business. At Boulder he also served as Co-Executive Director of the Robert H. and Beverly A. Deming Center for Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Hensler has travelled extensively and built a network of international contacts and partnerships. He has served as Special Advisor to the Australian Organisation for Quality (NSW) and as an adviser to the Special Adviser team of the Scottish First Minister. From 2002 to 2005 he served on the Academic Advisory Board ofe-TQM College in Dubai, UAE.

Before returning to the academic community, Dr. Hensler achieved a highly successful management career that includes 13 years in project, staff and line management positions at two technology driven companies. These positions include nuclear industry quality assurance management and aerospace industry quality engineering management, plant quality management, production management leading an organization of250 personnel, and R&D management leading an organization developing state-of-the-art process improvements involving applied research.

Dr. Hensler has provided training and consulting to American Airlines, CH2M-Hill, Texas Utilities, Sulzer, Louisiana-Pacific Corporation, Micro Motion, FEMA, Sporian Microsystems, and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, and the Fulfillment Corporation of America. Doug's most recent appointment includes working with CEO's and other executives of the Wichita aviation community including Spirit AeroSystems, Cessna, Bombardier/Learjet, Boeing and Hawker Beechcraft, along with Koch Industries and Coleman (The Outdoor Company).

Dr. Hensler's academic preparation includes a BSE in Aerospace and Mechanical Sciences • from Princeton University, an MBA from the University of Portland, and a Ph.D. in Finance

from the University of Washington. He is a licensed professional engineer in Quality Engineering in the State of California.

Vice Admiral Norbert R. Ryan Jr., USN (Ret) Military Officers Association of Amercia

President and CEO

V ADM Ryan is a 1967 graduate of the United States Naval Academy and a graduate of George Washington University with a Master of Science Degree in Personnel Administration as well as the Senior Officials in National Security Program at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government.

Ryan has commanded aviation units at the squadron, wing, and fleet levels and has directed the Navy's Office of Legislative Affairs. He served as the 52nd ChiefofNaval Personnel before retiring and assuming his current position in September 2002.

Ryan is the recipient of the 2014 Military Hero Award from the Pentagon Federal Credit Union Foundation (PenFed Foundation) honoring those who have demonstrated leadership in providing support and services to returning servicemembers and veterans and their families.

He was named the 2010 Association Executive of the Year by Association TRENDS, a nationa trade publication. He is the first military officer to win this award in its 39-year history. In 2015, Ryan was recognized as one ofHillVets 100 most influential and impactful veterans, service members and supporters from 2014.

Additionally, under Ryan's leadership, the Militaray Officers Association of Amercia has been named a "Top Lobbyist" by The Hill newspaper for the past eight years, and the only military service organization so listed for the last five years.

The Curtis H. Distinguished Professor A ward -Distinguished Professor David Yost, Department of National Security Affairs Award is presented to a faculty member who has merited recognition for his or her scholarly accomplishments and lasting educational contributions to the Naval Postgraduate School. The recipient of this award joins a select group of faculty bearing the title of Distinguished Professor who has made significant impacts on the Naval Postgraduate School.

The Richard W. Hamming Teaching Award -Associate Professor Aruna Apte, of the Graduate School of Business and Public Policy Award is presented to a faculty member whose contribution to student learning is demonstrated both in and out of the classroom through the excellence in instruction and thesis advising.

The Lieutenant Commander David L. Williams Outstanding Professor Award -Lecturer Tristan Mabry, Department of National Security Affairs Award is presented to the faculty member of the School of International Graduate Studies who has demonstrated the greatest dedication and therefore had the greatest impact on learning and intellectual growth of students, in residence and abroad.

Meyer Award for Teaching Excellence in Systems Engineering (Distance Learning)­Senior Lecturer Andy Bellenkes and Senior Lecturer Gary Langford Award is presented to an outstanding faculty member of the Distance Learning Systems Engineering degree program, who is recognized by the students for teaching excellence and/or exceptional contributions to the students' overall learning experience.
