at

The Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich

Choral Eucharist with Baptism

Last Sunday after Trinity

Sunday 25th October

11.00am

Welcome to the Chapel for our worship this morning. Our service is streamed (broadcast) live on the Old Royal Naval College Facebook page and YouTube Channel. Whilst we try our best to ensure that members of the congregation are not shown on camera this may occur momentarily.

We also welcome Isla Hall, who is being baptised this morning, her family, godparents and friends.

The setting of the mass is the ‘Little Organ Mass’ by J. Haydn (1732-1809).

Please note that due to Covid-19 restrictions there are a number of changes to our usual practices. The Government have made the wearing of a face mask/face covering whilst attending a service mandatory. We have masks available should you need one. Please speak to the Chaplain should you find wearing a face mask difficult.

All are welcome to come forward to receive Holy Communion (bread only) or a blessing. These will be given and received in silence and standing. Please wait until directed to come forwards to the sanctuary steps.

A collection will not be taken during the service but devices to receive your donations using contactless will be available as you leave the Chapel. A basket to receive cash will be on the table at the back. Please ask if these are not obvious to you. Closure has meant a substantial drop in income and we are very grateful for any donations to support the Chapel Fund. Details on gift aid for contactless donations are at the back of the service sheet.

We are sorry that at this time we are unable to offer the use of the Queen Mary Undercroft as a self service crèche facility. Families are welcome to go outside and then re-enter to give children a break during the service. Toilets and handwashing facilities are available in the King William (Painted Hall) Undercroft.

Refreshments after the service are currently suspended.

At the end of the service please remain seated until invited to leave the Chapel.

An induction loop system for the hard of hearing is installed in the Chapel. Hearing aid users should adjust their aid to T

INTROIT

O Lord give thy Holy Spirit into our hearts,

and lighten our understanding,

that we may dwell in the fear of thy Name,

all the days of our life:

that we may know thee,

the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.

Music: Thomas Tallis (c.1505-1585)

Words: Translation of Latin Traditional

THE GATHERING

Please stand for our opening prayers

THE LORD’S PRAYER

AllOur Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

PRAYER OF PREPARATION

AllAlmighty God, unto whom all hearts be open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love thee, and worthily magnify thy holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen

THE COMMANDMENTS

Our Lord Jesus Christ said: Hear O Israel, The Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. This is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this: Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.

AllLord, have mercy upon us, and write all these thy laws in our hearts, we beseech thee.

THE COLLECT

The Lord be with you.

AllAnd with thy spirit.

Let us pray.

The Collect for Last Sunday after Trinity

Blessed Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience, and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ.

AllAmen.

THE LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading Leviticus 19: 1-2, 15-18Read by Charles Brook

And the Lord said to Moses, “Say to all the congregation of the people of Israel, You shall be holy; for I the Lord your God am holy.

“You shall do no injustice in judgment; you shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbour. You shall not go up and down as a slanderer among your people, and you shall not stand forth against the life of your neighbour: I am the Lord.

“You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason with your neighbour, lest you bear sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance or bear any grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbour as yourself: I am the Lord.

This is the word of the Lord.

AllThanks be to God

Second Reading 1 Thessalonians 2: 1-8Read by Barbara Wright

For you yourselves know, brethren, that our visit to you was not in vain; but though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the face of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from error or uncleanness, nor is it made with guile; but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please men, but to please God who tests our hearts. For we never used either words of flattery, as you know, or a cloak for greed, as God is witness; nor did we seek glory from men, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse taking care of her children. So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.

This is the word of the Lord.

AllThanks be to God

Gradual Psalm1

BLESSED is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners :

and hath not sat in the seat of the scornful.

But his delight is in the law of the Lord :

and in his law will he exercise himself day and night.

And he shall be like a tree planted by the water-side :

that will bring forth his fruit in due season.

His leaf also shall not wither :

and look, whatsoever he doeth, it shall prosper.

As for the ungodly, it is not so with them :

but they are like the chaff, which the wind scattereth away from the face of the earth.

Therefore the ungodly shall not be able to stand in the judgement :

neither the sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

But the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous :

and the way of the ungodly shall perish.

Please stand for the reading of the Gospel

GOSPEL

The Gospel reading is announced

The Holy Gospel is written in the 22nd chapter of the Gospel according to Saint Matthew, beginning at the 34th verse.

AllGlory be to Thee, O Lord.

But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sad′ducees, they came together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.”

Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, “What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

‘The Lord said to my Lord,

Sit at my right hand,

till I put thy enemies under thy feet’?

If David thus calls him Lord, how is he his son?” And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did any one dare to ask him any more questions.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.

AllPraise be to Thee, O Christ.

SERMONRevd. Pat Mann, Chaplain

Sit once the sermon has been introduced

Holy Baptism

The Chaplain addresses the whole congregation

Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome Isla and uphold her in her new life in Christ?

All With the help of God, we will.

The Chaplain then says to the parents and godparents

Parents and godparents, the Church receives these Isla with joy. Today we are trusting God for her growth in faith. Will you pray for her, draw her by your example into the community of faith and walk with her in the way of Christ?

R With the help of God, we will.

In baptism Isla begins her journey in faith.

You speak for her today.

Will you care for her, and help her to take her place within the life and worship of Christ’s Church?

R With the help of God, we will.

The Decision

The Chaplain addresses the candidate through her parents and godparents

In baptism, God calls us out of darkness into his marvellous light. To follow Christ means dying to sin and rising to new life with him. Therefore I ask:

Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God?

R I reject them.

Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil?

R I renounce them.

Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour?

R I repent of them.

Do you turn to Christ as Saviour?

R I turn to Christ.

Do you submit to Christ as Lord?

R I submit to Christ.

Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life?

R I come to Christ.

Signing with the Cross

The Chaplain makes the sign of the cross on the forehead of the candidate, saying:

Isla, Christ claims you for his own. Receive the sign of his cross. Do not be ashamed to confess the faith of Christ crucified.

All Fight valiantly as a disciple of Christ against sin,

the world and the devil, and remain faithful to Christ to the end of your life.

May almighty God deliver you from the powers of darkness, restore in you the image of his glory, and lead you in the light and obedience of Christ.

All Amen.

Prayer over the Water

The Assistant Chaplain Emeritus stands before the water of baptism and says

Praise God who made heaven and earth,

All who keeps his promise for ever.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All It is right to give thanks and praise.

Father, we give you thanks and praise for your gift of water in creation; for your Spirit, sweeping over the waters, bringing light and life; for your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, baptized in the river Jordan.

We bless you for your new creation, brought to birth by water and the Spirit, and for your grace bestowed upon us your children, washing away our sins.

May your holy and life-giving Spirit move upon these waters. Restore through them the beauty of your creation, and bring those who are baptized to new birth in the family of your Church.

Drown sin in the waters of judgement, anoint your children with power from on high, and make them one with Christ in the freedom of your kingdom.

For all might, majesty, dominion and power are yours, now and for ever.

All Amen.

Profession of Faith led by the Chaplain

Brothers and sisters, I ask you to profess together and for Isla the faith of the Church. Do you believe and trust in God the Father?

All I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of

heaven and earth.

Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ?

All I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit?

All I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic

Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Amen.

Baptism

Isla Jennifer, I baptise you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All Amen.

The Assistant Chaplain Emeritus says

May God, who has received you by baptism into his Church, pour upon you the riches of his grace, that within the company of Christ’s pilgrim people you may daily be renewed by his anointing Spirit, and come to the inheritance of the saints in glory.

All Amen.

Giving of a Lighted Candle

The Assistant Chaplain Emeritus gives the family a lighted candle, saying

God has delivered us from the dominion of darkness and has given us a place with the saints in light. Isla Jennifer, you have received the light of Christ; walk in this light all the days of your life.

All Shine as a light in the world to the glory of God

the Father.

THE LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENT

OFFERTORY MUSIC Improvisation by Jonathan Eyre

INTERCESSIONS

Let us pray for the whole state of Christ’s Church militant here in earth.

Brief biddings are given

Almighty and ever-living God, who by thy holy apostle hast taught us to make prayers and supplications, and to give thanks, for all men: we humbly beseech thee most mercifully to accept our alms and oblations, and to receive these our prayers, which we offer unto thy divine majesty; beseeching thee to inspire continually the universal Church with the spirit of truth, unity, and concord: and grant, that all they that do confess thy holy name may agree in the truth of thy holy word, and live in unity and godly love.

We beseech thee also to save and defend all Christian kings, princes and governors; and specially thy servant Elizabeth our Queen, that under her we may be godly and quietly governed: and grant unto her whole Council, and to all that are put in authority under her, that they may truly and impartially minister justice, to the punishment of wickedness and vice, and to the maintenance of thy true religion and virtue.

Give grace, O heavenly Father, to all bishops, priests and deacons, that they may both by their life and doctrine set forth thy true and lively word, and rightly and duly administer thy holy sacraments: and to all thy people give thy heavenly grace; and specially to this congregation here present; that, with meek heart and due reverence, they may hear and receive thy holy word; truly serving thee in holiness and righteousness all the days of their life.

And we most humbly beseech thee of thy goodness, O Lord, to comfort and succour all them, who in this transitory life are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity.

And we also bless thy holy name for all thy servants departed this life in thy faith and fear; beseeching thee to give us grace so to follow their good examples, that with them we may be partakers of thy heavenly kingdom.

Grant this, O Father, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only mediator and advocate.

AllAmen.

All then join in the Chapel Prayer, saying

O eternal Lord God, our Creator and our Judge, hear our prayer as we offer to Thee our worship and thanksgiving.

Keep us mindful of those who have conducted their business on the seas in the defence of this realm; those who have worshipped in this Chapel through the centuries and those who seek now both to follow their faithful example and to spread the glorious news of Thy gospel. Preserve us in all our doings and grant us Thy continuous help. We ask this in the name of Him whose Light we follow, shining as a beacon across the ocean of our life, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O Trinity of love and power,

Our brethren shield in danger’s hour;

From rock and tempest, fire and foe,

Protect them whereso’er they go:

And ever let there rise to Thee

Glad hymns of praise from land and sea.

Words: William Whiting (1825-1878)

INVITATION TO CONFESSION

Ye that do truly and earnestly repent you of your sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbours, and intend to lead a new life, following the commandments of God, and walking from henceforth in his holy ways: draw near with faith, and take this holy sacrament to your comfort; and make your humble confession to almighty God, meekly kneeling upon your knees.

CONFESSION

AllAlmighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, maker of all things, judge of all men: we acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and wickedness, which we, from time to time, most grievously have committed, by thought, word and deed, against thy divine majesty, provoking most justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings; the remembrance of them is grievous unto us; the burden of them is intolerable. Have mercy upon us, have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; for thy Son our Lord Jesus Christ's sake, forgive us all that is past; and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

ABSOLUTION

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of his great mercy hath promised forgiveness of sins to all them that with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto him: have mercy upon you; pardon and deliver you from all your sins; confirm and strengthen you in all goodness; and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

AllAmen.

THE COMFORTABLE WORDS

Hear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ saith unto all that truly turn to him: Come unto me, all that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you.Matthew 11.28

So God loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, to the end that all that believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

John 3.16

PREFACE

The Lord be with you

Alland with thy spirit.

Lift up your hearts.

AllWe lift them up unto the Lord.

Let us give thanks unto our Lord God.

AllIt is meet and right so to do.

It is very meet, right and our bounden duty, that we should at all times, and in all places, give thanks unto thee, O Lord, holy Father, almighty, everlasting God.

Therefore with angels and archangels, and with all the company of heaven, we laud and magnify thy glorious name, evermore praising thee, and singing:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts, heaven and earth are full of thy glory. Glory be to thee, O Lord most high.

Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

Hosanna in the highest.

PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS

AllWe do not presume to come to this thy table, O merciful

Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy table. But thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to have mercy: grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of thy dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy tender mercy didst give thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there (by his one oblation of himself once offered) a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory of that his precious death, until his coming again: Hear us, O merciful Father, we most humbly beseech thee; and grant that we receiving these thy creatures of bread and wine, according to thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ's holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood: who, in the same night that he was betrayed, took bread; and, when he had given thanks, he brake it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you: do this in remembrance of me. Likewise after supper he took the cup; and, when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of this; for this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for you and for many for the remission of sins: do this, as oft as ye shall drink it, in remembrance of me.

AllAmen.

The President receives communion in both kinds on behalf of us all.

Members of the congregation are invited to come forwards to receive the Body of our Lord or a Blessing. The Communion and the Blessing are given and received in silence. Please follow the directions of the stewards.

AGNUS DEI sung by the choir

O Lamb of God,

that takest away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us.

O Lamb of God,

that takest away the sins of the world,

have mercy on us.

O Lamb of God,

that takest away the sins of the world,

grant us thy peace.

Anthem

Laß dich nur nichts nicht dauren

Mit Trauren,

Sei stille;

Wie Gott es fügt so sei vergnügt, mein Wille!

Was willst du heute sorgen

Auf morgen?

Der Eine

Steht allem für, der gibt auch dir das Deine.

Sei nur in allem Handel

Ohn’ Wandel,

Steh’ feste,

Was Gott beschleußt, das ist und heißt das Beste.

Amen

Let nought afflict thee with grief;

Be calm, as God ordains,

And so may my will be contented.

Why take thought for the morrow?

The one God who gives thee

What is thine watches over all.

All in thy doings be steadfast

And true. What God decrees

Is best, and this it is acknowledged.

Amen

Words: Paul Flemming (1609-1640)Music: Johannes Brahms (1833 – 1897)

THE LORD’S PRAYER

As our Saviour Christ hath commanded and taught us, we are bold to say

AllOur Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

Almighty and ever-living God, we most heartily thank thee, for that thou dost vouchsafe to feed us, who have duly received these holy mysteries, with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood of thy Son our Saviour Jesus Christ; and dost assure us thereby of thy favour and goodness towards us; and that we are very members incorporate in the mystical body of thy Son, which is the blessed company of all faithful people; and are also heirs through hope of thy everlasting kingdom, by the merits of the most precious death and passion of thy dear Son. And we most humbly beseech thee, O heavenly Father, so to assist us with thy grace, that we may continue in that holy fellowship, and do all such good works as thou hast prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost, be all honour and glory, world without end.

AllAmen.

GLORIA IN EXCELSIS

Stand as the choir sings

Glory be to God on high, and in earth peace, good will towards men. We praise thee, we bless thee, we worship thee, we glorify thee, we give thanks to thee for thy great glory, O Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty.

O Lord, the only-begotten Son Jesu Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.

For thou only art holy; thou only art the Lord; thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.
