Presidentrsquos Column

While I was on holiday the terrible news of MH17 reached me How horrible

were the first TV shots of the disaster scenery How impressive and respectful

were the arrival of the deceased at Eindhoven airport The Chapter thus far did

not receive any messages about direct involvement of any of our members

Nevertheless with 900+ members most likely members are engaged indirectly

with many of the victims their relatives friends colleagues neighbours and

others that were close At least I am Two people in my small village died in this

terrible and unbelievable disaster Did I know them Not really but the

opportunity to get to know each other is brutally taken away from them from

me from you Why I donrsquot know and I donrsquot understand What I do know is

that our chapter community mourns in silence and with deep respect for the victims and all those

that were close

Our community mourns around the globe as the warm words from Becky Winston received by e-mail

show ldquoMy deepest sympathies to the Netherlands on the horrific loss of life suffered with the

Malaysian Airline 17 tragic act To think the world has loss great minds in the fight on AIDsHIV and

other life that was positive and contributing is unthinkable The world mournsrdquo (Becky Winston

Past PMI Board Chair 2002 Fellow PMI)

Healing those deep wounds will take a lot of time while it will never be the same again The Chapterrsquos

warmest sympathies are with you

This time Irsquod like to start my update to you PMI NL Chapter members with another

request to help us to identify whether your organization could host one of our chapter

meetings As you know these evening events have hardly any impact on the daily

operation and you will get great reward from the other members that we can have one

of our great sessions at your company In other words we struggle a bit to get free

access to meeting locations with room for approx 50 ndash 100 people (already if 50 persons

From this workshop wersquod like to set-up a group of volunteers within the chapter supported by the chapter and all of us

who can start with actual hands-on supporting the chosen organization andor a specific project with coaching planning or

even actual work on location wherever in the world

So keep you agenda free at the end of September to join us in this great interactive workshop in which you will learn

portfolio management techniques on the fly

HELP I would appreciate some help on setting up this world cafeacute session so feel free to volunteer already In addition I

have been working hard to get a charity organization to allow us to use their canteen to hold the workshop but thus far I

was not successful to secure a location and date Do you have ties into a charity organization that might want to host our

workshop chapter meeting please let me know

PMI Netherlands Summit 3rd Edition

It started in the autumn of 2011 with an idea hellip

This year on June 12 we organized ndash in cooperation with CKC Seminars ndash the Third Edition of the PMI Netherlands Summit

Our ldquoISO for Projectsrdquo Local Interest Workgroup is working on lsquoISODIS (Draft International Standard) 21502

Guidance on Project and Programme Portfolio Managementrsquo which is relevant to any type of organization

including public or private and any size organization and sector The guidance presented in this standard is

intended to be adapted to suit the specific environment of the Project and Programme Portfolio

Now the draft standard is available for public comments via the link

comments will be reviewed by the Dutch Standards Committee for Project Management before they are sent

to ISO After resolution of all comments the standard will be published in the course of 2015

A survey on PM certification Project Management certification continues at an increasing rate around the world Certification is a very important

component of professional practice and is a vital component of professional association strategy

Ten years ago we conducted a study designed to understand the value of project management certification processes to

individuals making the decision to seek certified project manager status This information provided important insights into

the value placed on certification by the individuals that choose to take this step

We are conducting a follow up survey which will provide important insight into how perceptions and attitudes towards

certification have changed over the last decade Comparing the responses over a decade apart will make a unique

contribution to our understanding of the development of project management over this period

Verslag Game Academy Softskills actviteiten Mei ndash Juli (in

Dutch) Geachte heren en dames de afgelopen weken hebben wij in samenwerking met drie leden van PMI

gewerkt aan Softskills Wij zijn Rene Vielvoije Jeffry Turfboer en Kim van Rens inmiddels dank

verschuldigd voor hun eerste inzet Na een oproep in het Chapter Newletter zijn wij in een

workshop aan de slag gegaan om de contouren van het werk dat ons te wachten staat vast te

stellen Rene kon daar niet bijzijn en de vierde vrijwilligerster gaf aan dat er te veel werk was om

deze activiteit erbij te doen Helaas een vrouwelijke touch was leuk geweest

In een workshop op 29 juni in Utrecht onder aanwezigheid van Jan Jaap Severs van Grendel Games

hebben we van onze kant de vraag ten aanzien van de game en waar we staan en wat we nodig

hebben diepgaand uitgelegd De inbreng is tweeledig

- Een PMI projectmanagement laag in de game voor de doelgroep junior

projectmanagers

- Herkenbare PMI hardskills gerelateerd aan de PMBOK in de game

Ook zijn de beperkingen besproken er is al een gamesetting een scene en studio opnames met

een acteur Een stuk dialoog ligt al vast En we hebben tot december dus tijdsdruk en creatieve invulling

We hebben vastgesteld dat twee zaken minimaal in de game terug moeten komen

De basis PMI values

- Responsibility

- Respect

- Fairness

- Honesty

Een aantal drietal elementen van de PMBOK die passen bij de gamesituatie 2) Lessons learned zelfreflectie

3) Gebruik van projectplan WBS =gt riskassesment en report

4) Delegeren

Naar aanleiding hiervan zijn Jeffry en Kim zich gaan buigen over het script en de situaties Kim heeft donderdag 31 juli een

bezoek gebracht aan de gamestudio van Grendel Games in Leeuwarden en daar het volgende verslag van gemaakt

Laat ik beginnen dat ik bijzonder gastvrij ben ontvangen en dat de koffie en super was Daarnaast is hun locatie echt heel

bijzonder Dit moet je zelf zien en kan ik niet in woorden omschrijven Maar daar ging het natuurlijk niet om

Met Tim Laning en Anne Draaisma heb ik kunnen sparren over de Game SoftSkills Dit was erg waardevol om de juiste input

te kunnen leveren Ook heeft Anne mij de game laten zen voor zover dit mogelijk was Voor jullie beeldvorming Anne is

product owner en daarmee verantwoordelijk voor het bewaken van de voortgang Zijn team is nu bezig met het grafisch

uitwerken en het beschikbaar krijgen van de mocap (Motion Capturing) opnames Hierbij dienen verschillende

softwarepakket ingezet te worden om de gezichtsuitdrukkingen en de lichaamsbewegingen samen te voegen tot een

eenheid Dit kent nog enkele hindernissen maar ik begrijp dat afgelopen week progressie heeft gemaakt

De belangrijke aspecten voor ons dan

Omdat de mocap data reeds vast ligt kunnen we aan het script van Ingrid de tegenspeelster niets veranderen Wel kunnen

we gebruik maken van een intercom oid die input kan leveren aan de hoofdrolspeler Aaron De tekst van Aaron kan dus

ook aangepast worden zolang het maar een logisch verband houd met de antwoorden aan Ingrid

Er zal voor ongeveer 10 minuten script geschreven dienen te worden Het betreft slechts 1 scenario Het komt er op neer dat

Ingrid de reactorkern in zal moeten De vraag is hoe na het oplossen van dit probleem de relatie tussen Ingrid en Aaron is

Dit zal impact hebben in het verdere verloop van het spel Dit verdere verloop is GEEN onderdeel van de pilot die eind dit jaar

(Q4) gereed moet zijn

Het is dus belangrijk voor ons om het PMI aspect in eacuteeacuten scenario zo sterk mogelijk naar voren te laten komen waarmee we

aan onze groep deze game kunnen lsquoverkopenrsquo Er vanuit gaande dat dit traject een vervolg krijgt kan extra input voor scripts

mogelijk waardevol zijn (hoewel hier meer technische belemmeringen zijn dan bij het opzetten van meerdere scripts)

Als we in onze scripts aan kunnen geven of iets aansluit bij het PMI - gedachtegoed dan kunnen de programmeurs dit

omzetten in een puntenscore en kan dit tot uiting komen in de score

In de maand september gaan we verder met het concretiseren van scripts visualisatie daarvan inpassen in de gameplay

etc Daarnaast zoeken we samen met Kim en Jeffry en ons netwerk naar mensen die softskills aspecten zoals de Roos van

Leary die we gebruiken wetenschappelijk kunnen helpen staven

The Softskills project The Softskills project is thanks to the contributions from PMI members Rene Vielvoije Kim van

Rens and Jeffry Turfboer underway to have new project management features added We from

M-engaged and Grendel Games (wwwgrendel-gamescom) are working with the PMI members

in adding PMBOK rules and PMI values to the game The focus is on supporting junior project

managers

The Softskills project has several research aspects which include the RampD on motion capture

technologies the way softskills can be added to a game character (we used the Rose of Leary

for that one) and last but not least to incorporate soft skills in PM situations Because itrsquos an

applied game it also must be fun to play So we already set the scene (you are running a group

of technicians on a Research Institute far away in the Galaxy) and a piece of the station is

melting

You as a player have to get

your best team member in the

reaction room to fix the

problem You can have help

lines (and intercom) and most

likely can have help from pads

or other tools

The game character Karin is

created using motion capture

techniques which enables the

game developers to let her act

any way they like in the game

This part of the project is

energetic and complex It

involves cleaning and

moulding the data from the

motion capture session create a skin add human expressions to it design something to wear (a spacesuit of course) etc

etc

The task for the PMI members is to add project management value to this scene In July Kim has visited the Grendel

Gamestudio in the old prison in Leeuwarden the Blokhuispoort Kim and Jeffry already came up with some great ideas

involving the use of PMBOK Risk Management adding score to the dialog using the PMI values Also using the intercom to

help the player (if he asks for it will give extra points) with the situation and giving feedback Another useful add-on will be a

pad the player can use to see for example the character profile or add comments to a risk log

Kim and Jeffry are now getting involved in the process of game (non-linear) scriptwriting Nice for their curriculum

During the summer period we conclude work on scripts and substantiate the current material with game scores After that

the design will be created for the things that are worked out the script will be finalised a studio will be used to add extra

voicing etc So there is enough to do and look forward too Thanks guys Projects canrsquot be done alone

influence PMIrsquos future by voting Electronic ballots will be distributed the week of 18 August and will contain

seven nominees for the 2015ndash2017 PMI Board of Directors

The five directors selected by you the members will serve on the PMI Board for a three-year term and govern

the Institute They are ldquodirectors at largerdquo selected to serve the entire membership

Remember that according to PMI Bylaws and other governing documents the Board carries out the Institutersquos

purposes and objectives Board members are solely responsible and accountable for strategic planning and

policy setting and for fulfilling fiduciary responsibilities entrusted to them by the PMI membership
