2014 Northwest Conference Track and Field Championships

Home for Puget Sound is the creative urban city of Tacoma, Wash., in the pioneering Pacific Northwest. Puget Sound is a community proud to be many things. The student body consists of approximately 2,600 individuals all working hard toward unique goals while engaging the world around them in diverse ways. Many Puget Sound students take on multiple minors, major in interdisciplinary fields, and travel abroad. Some perform at Puget Sound’s renowned School of Music while pursuing degrees in over 50 academic fields. They take on internships, build apps, and start companies as part of the Business and Leadership Program. Many join one of the more than 100 student-run organizations on campus, and sometimes even start their own. Still others do experiments in nearby waterways, mountains, and national parks, or in science lab facilities ranked top 20 in the nation by The Princeton Review. Puget Sound professors personally know their students and receive more Carnegie Foundation teaching awards than any other college in the state.

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are build-ing a strong reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation.

Formed in 1926, the NWC has experienced a few mem-bership and national affiliation changes during its 87-year existence. It is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The conference’s current members in Oregon are George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, Pacific, and Willamette. Members located in Washington include Pa-cific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth.

The College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific, Puget Sound, Whit-man and Willamette are all charter members of the con-ference. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College.

Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whit-worth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978. Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and withdrew after 2009.

The NWC is nationally competitive in a wide spectrum of sports. Its members have won eight NCAA Division III Na-tional Championships: Pacific Lutheran football in 1999, Linfield football and George Fox baseball in 2004, Lin-field softball in 2007, George Fox women’s basketball in 2009, Linfield softball in 2011, Pacific Lutheran softball in 2012, and Linfield baseball in 2013.

NORTHWEST CONFERENCE

The NWC offers championships in 18 sports (nine men’s and nine women’s). The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but later joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges (WCIC) in 1984 to create the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges (NCIC). The name was shortened to the original Northwest Conference in 1998.

Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.

In 1964, prominent Tacoma businessman John S. Baker sup-plied the university with a grant to construct a new stadium to be used for athletics. The facility was a major upgrade from the area between Todd Field and Union Avenue where the Loggers used to suit up for home games, granting fans a first-rate experience at Puget Sound home games. Today, Baker Stadium has a covered seating capacity of 3000 and uncovered seating for 500. In addition to being the site of the University’s Commencement Ceremony, Logger football, soccer, track and field, and women’s lacrosse call Baker Stadium home.

Peyton Field is named in honor of Joe Peyton, a Puget Sound alumnus, star athlete, and long-time coach and faculty mem-ber of the university. The field was dedicated to Peyton on April 29, 2003. Peyton passed away unexpectedly on July 2, less than three months after the dedication. This beautiful facility, built in his honor, is a lasting legacy to his accom-plishments as a teacher, coach, citizen and friend.

Surrounding Peyton Field is Don Shotwell Track, aptly named after the former Puget Sound football player and Tacoma contractor who made numerous contributions to Logger Ath-letics and many other programs on campus.

During the 2002-2003 school year, several upgrades were made to the field and stadium to enhance the experience of Logger student-athletes and fans. The track was widened from six lanes to eight and covered in a 400-meter polyure-thane surface, allowing the university to host championship track meets. The all-weather surface was given a complete trench-drainage system, allowing for year-round usage. All other track and field events - high jump, long jump, triple jump, pole vault, steeple chase, shot put, discus, and javelin throw - were relocated to the east and west ends of the field and renovated to NCAA standards.

Baker Stadium has hosted two previous Northwest Confer-ence championships in 2004 and 2007. It was also used as a fill-in for historic Hayward Field in the 1997 film “Prefon-taine”, a biopic of distance runner Steve Prefontaine.

2014 NWC Track and Field Men’s Championships PreviewCLEARS AND JUMPSIn the pole vault, last year’s runner-up, Whitworth’s Joseph Green, enters the meet with the NWC’s highest clearance this year, clearing 4.81 meters. Two freshmen – Everett Kleven from Whit-worth and Michael Teves from Pacific – are second and third with bests of 4.45 meters and 4.42 meters.

Three-year high jump winner Frank Lima has graduated and three com-petitors enter the NWC meet vying to replace him. Budweiser Hawkins and Kelson Kawai of Pacific and Whit-worth’s Lucas McGill all lead the con-ference with clears of 2.00 meters, and two more Pirates are within 0.04 meters of that mark. Hawkins also is the No. 1 seed in the long jump with a leap of 6.88 meters. Teammate Jer-emy Parkinson is hot on Hawkins’ tail with a jump of 6.85 meters.

Three freshmen look to tally a confer-ence win in the triple jump during their first year of competition. Linfield’s Ken-nedy Johnson enters with the longest jump in the conference at 14.01 me-ters while fellow Wildcat Eric Igbino-ba is second with a mark of 13.61. Whitworth’s new face, Ryan Otterholt is third at 13.04 meters.

THROWS 2013 runner-up Kyle Peart of Pacific Lutheran enters the 2014 meet with the best conference mark in the shot put at 15.95 meters. Whitworth’s Corey Burt sits in second with a distance of 15.82 meters. Two other athletes have shot put marks above 15 meters.

There’ll be a new champion in the dis-cus throw as last year’s winner, Whit-worth’s Carter Comito, has graduated. Pacific’s Jesse Bethke is at the head of the line after tallying the longest throw

at 45.86 meters. He has a 1.75-meter lead on Arick Morrell of George Fox, who’s in second at 44.11 meters.

In the javelin throw, Willamette’s Jor-dan Loos has the longest throw of 2014 with a distance of 61.68 meters. Last year’s runner-up, Chase Wright, is second with a 61.46 meter mark, and fellow Pirate Tyler Coopman is third with a mark of 60.40 meters.

Three seniors sit atop the men’s ham-mer leaderboard. Last year’s cham-pion, Keegan Shea of Whitworth has the longest throw so far in the NWC with a mark of 59.85 meters. Peart is second with a hammer throw of 56.97, while George Fox’s Morrell sits one meter behind at 55.65.

SPRINTS AND HURDLES Pacific’s Michael Zane is tied for first in the 100 meter dash and second in the 200. He is tied with Lewis & Clark’s Curtis Shirey for the 100m lead with a mark of 10.91, and Zane is 0.2 be-hind Willamette senior and defend-ing champion Tom Fiechtner.

Three NWC athletes have run a sub-50.00 400 meter dash. Freshman Jake Mihelich of Linfield has a time of 48.93, Alex Hardlund of Whitworth is second with a time of 49.64, and the Bruins’ Will Lawrence is right behind at 49.75.

Whitworth has the top two runners in the 110 meter high hurdles with Jona-than Hoff leading with at 14.83 and Casey Monahan second at 14.93. In the 400 meter hurdles, the Pioneers’ Kodie Artner and Pirates’ Alex Hard-lund have both gone under 57 seconds at 56.09 and 56.52, respectively.

MID AND LONG DISTANCESGeorge Fox’s Will Lawrence looks

to defend his title in the 800 meter run and enters the 2014 conference meet with the fastest time at 1:52.05. He and William Wren of Whitworth (1:52.91) are nearly three seconds faster than the field.

Two Bearcats hold the fastest times in the 1500 meter run as Kit Kingstad has a best mark of 3:56.20 and Dan-iel Swanson is at 3:58.00 even. Two Bruins are within a second of Swanson with Cody Thompson checking in at 3:58.45 and Joseph Pia at 3:59.00.

Pacific’s Tyler Shipley looks to defend his titles in both the 5,000 and 10,000 meter runs, holding a 5K time of 15:01.51 and 10K mark of 30:24.44. Two competitors are within 10 seconds of Shipley’s 5K mark, but Shipley holds first in the 10K by 2.5 minutes.

In the 3000 meter steeplechase, Wil-lamette’s Jacob Shafi is in first with a mark of 9:32.50, less than two sec-onds faster than Josh Seekatz of Puget Sound.

RELAYSBoth of last year’s relay winners enter the 2014 meet with the top seed. Wil-lamette’s 400 meter relay team has a mark of 42.11 this year, while Whit-worth has run the 1,600 meter relay in 3:21.30.

TEAM TITLEWhitworth looks to extend its confer-ence title streak to five years, winning the team title every year since 2010. The Pirates boast six of the year’s top marks, and they prove their depth with top-five performances in 17 different events. Whitworth enters the 2014 NWC Championships with a first-place finish already as Peter Delap won the men’s decathlon held April 14-15 in Salem, Ore.

2014 NWC Track and Field Women’s Championships PreviewCLEARS AND JUMPSGeorge Fox junior Dannah Martin leads the conference in the pole vault with a clearance of 3.60 meters. She’s 0.2 meters ahead of a pair of Whitworth vaulters and 0.22 meters over three more athletes.

In the high jump, last year’s first-, second-, and third-place finishers enter the 2014 Championships as the top-three athletes again. Maria Green, last year’s No. 2, has the high-est clearance at 1.65 while Christina Dobbins, last year’s winner is No. 2 with a 1.63 mark. Taylor Ottomano is third with a clearance of 1.60.

The long jump will have a new champion, and George Fox is in solid position to take that title. The Bruins have the top two long jumpers coming into the NWCs with Asia Greene first at 5.59 meters and Charity Arn at 5.53. The Bruins’ Rachael Adkins also leads the triple jump with a leap of 11.62 meters, 0.3 meters ahead of a couple of Willamette leapers. Rebekah Daniel is No. 2 at 11.29 meters and Elisa Ahern third at 11.13.

THROWSThe four throwing events are dominated by hurlers from Pacific Lutheran and Whitworth. Samantha Potter of Pacific Lutheran leads both the shot put and the discus throw with marks of 13.00 meters and 44.27 meters, respectively. Pot-ter won the discus event last year and finished second in the shot put. Whitworth’s Mary Data is second in the shot put with a toss of 12.62 meters while the Pirates’ Courtney Fairhart is No. 2 in the discus with a throw of 42.71 meters.

Two Pirates lead the hammer and javelin throws with Da-kota Kliamovich tallying a 54.19 mark in the hammer and Kerry Wright a 46.02 tally in the javelin. They are followed by two Lutes as Pacific Lutheran’s Jorgina Moore is second in the hammer with a 48.77 toss. Stephanie McFarland is second in the javelin with a mark of 41.77 meters. Wright won the javelin throw in 2013 while Kliamovich took second in the weight throw last year.

SPRINTS AND HURDLESGeorge Fox’s Rachael Kraske looks to be a major threat in the three sprint distances and one hurdle race. The junior won both the 200 and 400 meter dash in 2013 and leads the conference in the 100m and 400m dash and the 400m hurdles this year. Her times include 12.38 in the 100, 57.70 in the 400, and 1:01.83 in the 400H.

Puget Sound’s Allanah Whitehall also hopes to make an impact on the meet in sprint races, leading the 200 meter times at 25.20 and second in the 100 at 12.47.

Kraske’s teammate, Charity Arn, leads the 100 meter hur-dles with a time of 14.73, but Linfield’s Dallas Edge is liter-ally right on her tails at 14.74. Kraske isn’t far behind either, tallying a best time of 14.76.

MID AND LONG DISTANCESPuget Sound’s Alicia Burns and Willamette’s Michaela Freeby will duke it out for control of the middle distance races. Burns leads the 800 meter run by nearly a second at 2:14.94. Freeby is second in the event at 2:15.93. Freeby holds the edge, however, in the 1500 meter run with a fast time of 4:38.34. Teammate Taylor Ostrander is second at that distance with a tiem of 4:39.60, and Burns is a distant third at 4:47.25.

Freeby also holds the fastest times in two long distance events: the 5,000 meter run and 3,000 meter steeplechase. She’s tops in the steeplechase by two seconds and leads the 5K by three. The junior won the steeplechase in 2013 and finished second in the 5000m as well. This year, Ostrander has the second-fastest in both races as well.

In the 10,000 meter run, Emily Painter of George Fox’s time of 36:10.87 leads the conference, eclipsing Kathryn Flyte’s mark of 36:47.00 by 37 seconds. Flyte, a senior for Puget Sound, set her mark in the first weekend of the season. She’s also third in the 5K, trailing by 38 seconds in that event.

RELAYSGeorge Fox and Puget Sound have the top two times in both relays with George Fox holding the edge in the 400 meter relay and the Loggers leading the 1600 meter re-lay. The Bruins’ mark of 48.87 in the 400m relay is 0.68 seconds faster the Loggers’ time in the event. Puget Sound maintains a slight lead in the 1600 meter relay with a time of 3:56.97, 0.02 seconds faster than the Bruins’ mark.

TEAM TITLEGeorge Fox has won the last two team titles, beating Wil-lamette by just eight points in 2013. This year, the Bruins hold the top marks in 11 events, including the completed heptath-lon, which Maria Green won at the NWC Mutli Champion-ships April 14-15. The Bruins lead all four clears and jumps events and are in the top two of every short distance race.
