2014 Season Preview

Two years ago, the Olivet Nazarene University volleyball team could be described as young. Last season, they were eager … on the verge. When the 2014 edition of Tiger Volleyball takes the court in the fall, the word they want to come to people’s minds is “passion.” They want their performance to show that they are passionate about what they do and how they do it. They want people to know they have come to play–for God, for their teammates, for their school.

Having lost just three players to graduation, the Tigers bring experience to the court. Four seniors, four juniors and three sophomores will make up the majority of the team. Add in five strong freshmen, and Head Coach Brenda Williams is excited to see how this season will unfold.

Leading the Tigers on the court will be two-time team most valuable player Haley Hatalla. Hatalla, a 5-9 libero, was named Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team a year ago. She is pillar of consistency for the Tiger defense, leading the team in digs (662), digs/set (4.19) and reception attempts (847). She also was second on the team in service aces (33) and first in service percentage (.965).

The Olivet attack is something to fear. On the outside, the Tigers return senior outside Heidi Schoenbein and junior Becky DeRuiter. In the middle, seniors Kaia Lenzi and Tiffany Madura return. DeRuiter led the returners in kills a season ago, finishing with 338 on the season. Not far behind was Schoenbein with 310 and Lenzi with 253. Schoenbein also led the Tigers in total blocks with 111, just edging out Lenzi with 110.

Not to be forgotten are the two setters who will be orchestrating the attack in the 6-2 offense. Junior Renee Enz and sophomore Katie Tabisz proved they have control of the court. The duo finished with nearly identical numbers a

season ago, dishing out 756 and 799 assists, respectively. Tabisz also joins the outside attack when not setting and is the team’s top server, finishing with 42 aces a year ago.

Other integral returners include Melissa Bartholomew, who will be the playing defensive specialist, joining Hatalla in the back row. The possibilities are endless for Hannah Reister and Jordan TerBush; both are healthy and ready to return from injuries that limited their play last season. Last, but certainly not least, is up-and-coming outside hitter Macie Riegel, voted the team’s Most Improved Player last spring.

Coach Williams is not one to shy away from competition, and the 2014 schedule for the Olivet Nazarene University volleyball team proves that. The Tigers will face seven different teams ranked in the NAIA Postseason Coaches’ Poll, four of which are in the Top 10, three of those they will battle twice. Olivet will open their season at the Grand View University Invitational and will take on No. 12 Columbia College (Mo.) and No. 17 Indiana Wesleyan University in two of their first four matches of the season. The Grand View matchups will be a great warm up for the following weekend when the Tigers will go head-to-head with No. 2 Biola University (Cal.) and No. 3 Concordia University – Irvine (Cal.) on Irvine’s home court. Olivet will also travel to No. 10 Georgetown College (Ky.) and face No. 8 Grand View University (Iowa) and Columbia at home. The CCAC schedule proves to be challenging, facing No. 22 and defending conference champion Trinity Christian College (Ill.) twice.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.” Colossians 3:23

COACHING PHILOSOPHYThere are four principles that guide my coaching. The first is my relationship with God. I want my players to see the difference Christ made in my life, and through this, learn to serve their teammates and others. Second, I see myself as an educator on the court. Each practice, I strive to teach them that through hard work, perseverance, sportsmanship and faith, they can be champions on the court and also in life. The third guiding principle is creating an atmosphere of competition. The only way to see where we stand and where we are going is to test ourselves against the top teams in the country and also in practice each day. And finally, I want each of my players to aim for academic excellence and become complete student-athletes.

The 2013 season, while an improvement over the rebuilding season of 2012, was still not what the team and coaches had hoped for. With just three seniors on the roster, the Tigers looked to their young team once again. The Tigers finished the season 21-21 overall and 13-5 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC), including a reappearance in the NCCAA North Central Regional.

Olivet opened the season up-and-down, starting off 6-11 before going on a nine-match winning streak. The streak included an exciting five-set win over conference rival University of Saint Francis (Ill.) who was then receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches Poll before coming to an end against Trinity Christian Col-lege (Ind.), the eventual CCAC regular season and tournament champions.

Overall, the season showed signs of great things to come.

Champions of Character

WASHINGTON, ILLINOISEarly in the summer, the volleyball team took a trip to Washington, Illinois, to help the Montgomery family with tornado clean up on their property. The Montgomery family lost their home, barn and shed to the Washington tornado in November 2013. The team was able to help rake and move debris from the Montgomerys field to help them prepare for planting this summer. This trip was a great opportunity for the team to reach out to people in Illinois, and it also allowed them to glimpse the hope andpositivity amid the rubble of such a disaster.

CELEBRATE LIFESince the summer mission trip this year was a local one, the team had the opportunity to work Celebrate Life at ONU after returning from Washington. For this event, the players got to become the referees for a few days. Each girl rotated from keeping score, line judging, keeping the score book and both up- and down-officiating. For this events the team was able to use its knowledge of volleyball to help out the Nazarene churches that attend Celebrate Life in the volleyball tournament portion of their competition. This was another great opportunity for the team to help others in the community.

DIG PINKAnnually the ONU volleyball team hosts a Dig Pink match to help raise money and awareness for breast cancer. The Dig Pink Match last season was against Trinity Christian. With the spectators and players decked out in pink attire, the team raised money with raffles and auction items. The Dig Pink match is always a great event that brings lots of people together for a great cause. In fall 2013, the team helped raise $3,000 to support breast cancer awareness.

READING AT BRADLEY EAST ELEMENTARY Every spring semester, the volleyball team makes it a priority to visit a local school to read with the children. This spring the team visited Bradley East Elementary School. Each player was paired with a student for a few minutes before the next students came in to read. Unlike last year the girls on the team read aloud to the students, this year the students read to the players! It was an awesome experience for the team to be able to interact with the young students and teach them the value of reading.

TEAM ZAYLAMany of the sports teams at ONU, including the volleyball team, purchased T-shirts that said, “Fight like a girl!” to support Zayla Mitsdarffer. Zayla is a local young girl from Herscher, Illinois who was battling with cancer for the third time. The volleyball team showed their support by wearing their T-shirts and having a Team Zayla night for one of their home matches. The volleyball team hoped to spread awareness and support for Zayla’s situation.

FOOD COLLECTION AT CENTER OF HOPE IN KANKAKEE, ILLINOISThe Olivet volleyball team paired up with the local UNO volleyball club to collect food for the Center of Hope in Kankakee, Illinois. For one of the home matches, the team advertised free entry with the donation of a canned good. This was an easy way to have the students, staff and family members of Olivet help out those in need in our community.

NCCAA FOOD DRIVE The Olivet team also participated with Bethel College by bringing canned goods to the NCCAA Regional Championship game in Mishawaka, Indiana. The teams were able to collaborate to help those in need and come together as opposing teams to help a support a good cause.

ONU VOLLEYBALL CAMPThe ONU volleyball team does more than just teach young campers how to play the game at volleyball camp in the summer. Before some of the sessions, Coach Williams and the players teach the Champions of Character Core Values to the young girls. These Core Values include integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsman-ship, and servant leadership. Teaching these values to the campers helps instill the importance of character on and off the court. This is an amazing way to impact the campers on a deeper level than just volleyball skill training.

Renee Enz

Nicole Garde Award 2013

The 2013 Nicole Garde Award was presented to sophomore Renee Enz at the annual volleyball banquet. Renee was selected by her teammates largely due to her leadership skills. “Renee is the most down-to-earth person I know. She always has the team’s best interest in mind and always helps to keep the peace. She leads by example on the court,” said one teammate. “Renee has developed into a spiritual leader off the court as well; she is devoted to growing in her Christian faith and makes that a big priority in her life.”

The award is given in honor of former Tiger player Nicole Garde, who illustrated dedication and sacrife while serving as a Christian role model to her teammates during her four years in the program.
