by Kirsten Diller, Substance Abuse Clinical Program Manager

THE FIRST IN JAPAN!BEHAVIOR HEALTH ARTICLE

That’s right! The Substance Abuse Counseling Center (SACC) here in Iwakuni is the very first substance abuse clinic in Japan to be nationally accredited! In July of this year, following nearly a year of preparation, the SACC program was evaluated by CARF: The Commission on Accreditation and Rehabilitation Facilities. SACC passed the review with flying colors and received a three year ac-creditation, the highest level available.

CARF regularly surveys sites all across the globe to ensure clinical care meets the highest standards and services are efficient and effec-tive. Their stamp of approval on SACC Iwakuni acknowledges that their client care is outstanding and that they are making a positive, measurable impact via treatment and prevention outreach. Having this accreditation tightens the level of organization and efficiency at SACC which allows them to serve their clients and the base at large through prevention programs more effectively.

SO WHO ARE THESE SACC PEOPLE?

There’s Heather Payne, the Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist and Drug Demand Reduction Coordinator; Jeff Rowland, a Substance Abuse Counselor; Kirsten Diller, the Substance Abuse Clinical Program Manager; and Mioko Kikuchi, the Admin Extraordinaire.

Yay for them, but what does this mean for MCAS Iwakuni?

SACC serves the community in a unique manner and it is their mis-sion to encourage self-referrals to their clinic for treatment. Too often, clients present at SACC following an alcohol related inci-dent (ARI) so their treatment is reactive in nature. A self-referral indicates that a client has perceived the problem proactively and by seeking help may prevent an ARI and any legal consequences that could follow.

The folks at SACC do not want to be labeled as “the alcohol police”. They want the community aboard MCAS Iwakuni to be healthy and to make low-risk choices so alcohol related incidents, non-judicial punishments (NJP), relationship issues, financial hardships, and other life challenges are less likely to occur. They are willing to work with each and every person to develop a personalized treatment plan and encourage everyone to continue making healthy choices.

SO WHAT ARE THESE SERVICES THEY PROVIDE?

Heather, the prevention specialist, prepares and delivers unit briefs regarding low risk drinking choices and facilitates the early interven-tion class, “PRIME for Life.” She plans and executes Red Ribbon Week and works in collaboration with other programs on base to increase awareness of alcohol and drug abuse.

Jeff and Kirsten, the counselors, work closely with clients on an individual and group level to target more pervasive, higher risk thoughts, feelings, and behaviors as they relate to the unhealthy use of alcohol and other drugs. They also work with family members of those struggling with addiction issues to ensure the family’s needs are also addressed and they are aware of how an addict’s behavior can impact an entire family unit.

INTERESTING. WHERE ARE THEY LOCATED AND ARE THERE ANY OTHER ON-BASE SERVICES TO WHICH THEY REFER?

They are located on the second floor of Building 411 in the Behavioral Health suite. Their hours are 0730-1630 on weekdays (closed on holidays). There is an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting that gathers regularly on Tuesday and Fridays evenings at 1800 on the second floor of Yujo Hall. Feel free to call 253-5260 or stop by the office with any questions! The staff is more than happy to provide on the spot consultations for anyone seeking more information.

KIT KAT

8 P R E V I E W M A G A Z I N E | F I N D U S O N FA C E B O O K : M C C S I WA K U N I

Page 11: 2014 January Preview

What’s so special about Japanese Kit Kats?

Kit Kats here come in different shapes and

flavors. They come in big bars and little

bite sized nuggets. Some flavors are

seasonal, while others are regional.

Seasonal flavors they’ve offered in the

past include pumpkin pudding

Kit Kats for Halloween, and

Sa k u r a Matcha (Cher r y

Blossom Green Tea) flavor in

the spring. Collecting regional

flavors is a little bit more of a

challenge since they’re difficult

to find unless you travel to that region.

For example, in Kyushu you can find

the Amaou Ichigo (Amaou Strawberry)

and the Beni Imo (purple sweet potato) Kit

Kats, and in Kyoto the Shogoin Yatsuhashi

(cinnamon cookies that are very popular

in Kyoto), Hojicha (roasted tea), and the Uji

Matcha (green tea) flavors.

Traveling with ITT is a great way to see

Japan AND add to your Kit Kat collection.

They have a trip to the Sapporo Snow

Festival coming up in February. This is an

amazing trip and, in my opinion, should be

high up on the list of things to do while in

Japan. Aside from seeing truly spectacular

ice and snow carvings, you also have the

opportunity to search out two Kit Kat

flavors sold in Hokkaido; Yubari Melon and

Yaki Tomorokoshi (grilled corn on the cob).

by The Iwakuni Foodie, Community Writer

Design & Photos by Tina Hong-Sandmel

My friends and I have a slight obsession with Japanese Kit Kat bars. Yes, you read that right. We are

obsessed with a candy bar. While some of you are probably shaking your head in disbelief right now,

I know that some of you share this obsession and you are excited to find out that you are not alone.

COMMUNITY ARTICLE

WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THIS KIT KAT CRAZE ABOUT?If you were lucky enough to get a seat

on the Nagasaki Lantern Festival trip,

the Koga Rest Area has both the

Amaou Ichigo and Beni Imo

for sale in the gift shop. In

March, ITT offers a trip to

Kyoto and Nara (two of my favorite

places in Japan). While checking out the

beautiful temples and shrines, be on

the lookout for the cinnamon cookie

Kit Kats (my favorite!). The gift shops

that line the street leading up to the

Kiyomizu Temple carry these and the

two tea flavors. If you sign up for the

Tokyo Fun Trip, you can search for the

Wasabi Kit Kat. I know it sounds odd,

but I have been told by quite a few people

that it tastes pretty good.

I look for Kit Kats everywhere I go. You just

never know what you might find. When

I was in Kamakura over the summer

checking out the Great Buddha, I found

Shio Caramel (salted caramel) f lavored

Kit Kat bites in a local 7 Eleven. I bought

almost every bag they had in the store. I

haven’t seen them anywhere else since

then which makes me very sad because

they were amazing.

The next time you’re on an ITT trip or out

exploring Japan on your own, be on the

lookout for flavored Kit Kats. Be careful

though. You just might become obsessed.

I’m a military brat, half-Japanese and half-American, who proudly calls Iwakuni home. I love food, photography, and travel. I

started the Iwakuni Foodie blog to document my adventures to local restaurants, and hopefully make it easier for Americans

to get out and explore Japan! Also visit my Iwakuni Foodie page on Facebook for Kit Kat sightings and photos! -The Iwakuni Foodie

the holidays are over and it is now time to plan out a

brand new year. If you hadn’t noticed, there has been

an “Angry Elf” among us. He has made appearances at

various events and is quite honestly, a big ol’ Grinch.

Lucky for him, MCCS is here to help. We sat down with

The Iwakuni Elf and helped him devise a plan to turn

his frown upside down. He will be taking advantage of

all the great services MCCS has to offer for the coming

year. Follow along with his plan; you’ll be happy you did!

JANUARY: MANAGES HIS ANGER

(BEHAVIORAL HEALTH)

Frank has been feeling down and out and has started

to notice that he has a shorter fuse than usual. He

has been snapping at people, is constantly irritated, angry, or fuming

mad. That is where MCCS Behavioral Health can help. There are

anger and stress management classes and counselors that want to

support him to be the happiest, healthiest person he can be. When

he is unsure of why he feels the way he does, it is helpful to talk

through and process those feelings with others. He’ll be stopping

by or calling Behavioral Health for more information.

MAY: LEARNS TO TUNE UP HIS BIKE (SERVICES-TYPHOON MOTORS)

The Iwakuni Elf isn’t at The North Pole anymore, and here in Iwakuni

- he loves to ride! The Auto Skills Center is the perfect place to

tweak his motorcycle to top condition. He can work on his ride

and use everything from hand tools to air tools to bench tools

to trick his bike out just the way he wants. Depending on the

weather, he can choose between an indoor or outdoor bay, and

even leave his bike there overnight if needed. Once he’s satis-

fied he’s done all maintenance to perfection, he can hop on

over to the 24 hour car wash to make his ride sparkle like

a North Pole snowflake!

SEPTEMBER: STARTS SCHOOL (EDUCATION SERVICES)

Frank isn’t sure he wants be an elf forever; there are so many oppor-

tunities in this world from the North Pole to the South. In the com-

petitive workforce of today, a college degree is more important than

ever. Whether he is looking to get started or hoping to move beyond

his bachelor’s degree in toy-making, the Education Office can assist.

They offer counseling for active duty and family members unsure of the

right school to attend, what to study, or how to achieve their goals

from a distance. They can also assist in locating fund-

ing opportunities to avoid elf-student loan debt.

FEBRUARY: WORKS ON RELATIONSHIPS

(MCFTB)

The Iwakuni Elf clearly has relationship issues – he hasn’t stopped

mumbling about someone who lives at “The North Pole”. Here in

Iwakuni, one of the most important and precious relationships is the

one we have with our partner or spouse. Try our Five Love Languages

for Couples workshop where you and your spouse will identify each

other’s love language and open new conversations that might not

have been explored. How about our Craft Your Way to: Lasting Love

or even the personality class, 4 Lenses. Frank will be glad he did!

JUNE: GIVES BACK TO THE COMMUNITY (SMP)

Even though Frank was sent here on assignment, Iwakuni is starting

to grow on him. After utilizing Behavioral Health to control his anger

and frustration, he has started to warm up to the place. In fact, he

can show his appreciation by participating in one of the many events

SMP puts on to give back to the community. He can visit an orphan-

age with the program, take part in a Kintai Clean-up or volunteer

for one of the many events that MCCS Iwakuni hosts. Afterwards,

he can always visit the Marine Lounge or Hornet’s Nest to shoot

some pool, watch movies, or simply hang out with single Marines

stationed here in Iwakuni.

OCTOBER: GIVES UP EGG NOG (BEHAVIORAL HEALTH - SACC)

Frank’s got a bit of an “egg nog” addiction and wants

to get healthy. The folks at the Substance Abuse

Counseling Center (SACC) can absolutely help him

with his resolution to consume “egg nog” at low-risk

levels. He may decide to give it up entirely for a while – it’s a lot of

empty calories and expensive to boot! SACC can help him come

up with other things to do with his time because he might miss the

“egg nog” at first. But, there are wonderful things to see and do in

Iwakuni – he’ll learn to skip the “egg nog” and get working on his

resolution to get healthy.

craftMARCH: EXPANDS HIS HORIZONS

(ITT)

Frank’s always wanted to experience Japanese history,

and now is his opportunity. He’s been in Iwakuni for a

while now, and he’s ready to go on his first trip. March has a

variety of trips held by ITT that make the travel and lodging

a breeze for him. He doesn’t even have to make his own

hotel reservations! Will he choose to visit Tokyo, Kyoto, or

maybe visit Safari Land? Either way, he’ll be sure to have

a great time expanding his horizons.

JULY: SAVES MONEY! (PFM)

Frank hasn’t been all that mindful of his finances lately. Saving money

is a skill, and the Personal Financial Manager(PFM) provides finan-

cial education, counseling, and information and referral that helps

him be a better saver. She'll offer advice from taking advantage of

the Santa Bucks offered in July to how to stretch his December gift

dollars that will be a bit limited this year. He’ll learn he can use a

Frequency Card at Crossroads where with the purchase of nine value

meals from participating food vendors, he will receive the

tenth meal free! Frank wants to learn even more, and

lucky for him Saving and Investment classes are

offered at no charge throughout the year.

NOVEMBER: USES HIS HANDS(SERVICES-WOOD HOBBY SHOP)

It’s been a while since The Iwakuni Elf has practiced his trade of

crafting toys. To get back in the game he can visit the Wood Hobby

Shop for classes to sharpen his skills, or just work on a project of

his own. He can build that piece of furniture he’s always wanted

with the assistance of knowledgeable staff. The Wood Hobby Shop

offers quality machines for do-it-yourself projects. Wood is avail-

able for sale onsite. But if he wants to use the space, a safety class

is required beforehand. Safety classes are held Wednesdays and

Saturdays every month.

APRIL: BEGINS TRAINING FOR A MARATHON (SEMPER FIT)

Frank has been hitting the gym up, but feels like he could use some

competition in his life and is signing up for the Kintai Marathon. If

you’d like to join him this April, Semper Fit is here to help! Cross

training is highly recommended to eliminate boredom and prevent

overuse injuries. Many classes such as Cycling, Zumba, and Step

provide the aerobic benefits needed for his endurance during the

Marathon. Plus, these classes are high energy, fun and a great way

to keep him conditioned on his days off from running. Classes such

as Power Pump, Pilates, and Yoga provide full body

strengthening and increased range of motion; thus

increasing his training sustainability.

AUGUST: HIKES FUJI

(SEMPER FIT)

Frank’s heard all about how he just has to visit Tokyo and climb the

iconic Mt. Fuji while he is stationed here. It is a milestone for many

people who live in Japan, but reaching the summit is not always

easy. Outdoor Recreation and the Single Marine Program both offer

smaller scale hiking trips during the spring and summer such as

Three Peaks and Mt. Houben to help him prepare for Mt. Fuji. The

ODR staff can also provide him with information on local hikes

and activities to get him “Fuji ready.” He’ll utilize the

professionals in Outdoor Recreation for first-hand

knowledge of what it takes to reach the summit.

DECEMBER: LEARNS A NEW CRAFT (MFP-LIBRARY)

Frank is quite the handyman, and there is always a new craft he is

trying to master. Throughout the month of December, the Library

offers a winter crafting series. He can bring his own crafting sup-

plies and share ideas with other crafters, or the Library will provide

all he needs to learn how to do one special craft. No matter his skill

level, it’s a great way to share his creativity in a fun, social environ-

ment. If he runs out of ideas, the Library has a wide variety of books

and magazines (both in print and electronic) that can help light his

creative spark all year long.

As adults we can do just about whatever we want and we have a plethora of options to choose from, yet at some point we stop making choices and begin forming habits for better or worse. We can stay up until midnight every day watching Breaking Bad or Mad Men, eat ice-cream for breakfast, heck we can even buy things we can’t afford on our handy, dandy credit cards. Our brain eventually goes into autopilot as we continually engage in behaviors that do not benefit us over time. Many of us may not even be aware why we do the things we do after we have been doing them for so long. In the back of our minds every one of us knows we have our vices, those guilty pleasure habits that we just can’t seem to shake that get in the way of working towards our big goals that we want to accomplish.

IT TAKES 30 DAYS TO FORM A DISCIPLINE, 60 DAYS TO DEVELOP

A HABIT AND 90 DAYS TO CREATE A LIFESTYLE CHANGE.

It might seem overwhelming to think about all the things you want to change at once. You will be more likely to succeed by keeping it simple and choosing one discipline you want to develop. There are triggers that you must avoid that will cause you to fall into old routines. For every trigger that leads to your old routine, develop a replacement discipline.

The first 30 days of self-discipline is crucial. Once you’re committed, write down your plan and get it on the calendar! Starting immediately may be tempting, but jumping the gun before you’re ready makes it easy to get quickly discouraged. Make your start date a big event, something you can look forward to and plan ahead of time. When you write down your 30, 60, 90 day action plan think about the obstacles you will encounter along the way and what you will do to overcome them.

IRONWORKS GYM

Page 27: 2014 January Preview

Your current level of physical readiness is much different than mine. This information is provided as a reference point and starting place.

TALK WITH YOUR DOCTOR before starting any vigorous physical activity. Know and understand where your body is right now.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR A 5K OR HALF MARATHON: Take a true, honest assessment of where you are right now. A great run to start with is the Jingle Bell Jog, 1.5K, just less than 1 mile. (You can also get a micro-fit assessment with one of our trainers at the IronWorks Gym)

Register for an online account on a running site. Most will have built in training programs with suggestions on techniques and tools to log progress. I use RUNNERSWORLD.com, it's free! From the log in screen, I click on Race Training, then Click on SMART COACH and input the data from the JBJ or my last running event (PFT run time is also a good starting point). Then I enter the event I am

training for and hit enter to generate the smart coach generic training schedule. You can pay for a more detailed, specific schedule, but I find the generic one works just fine. Print the schedule; put it on whatever personal electronic device you have and stick to the workout schedule. Be sure to hydrate before the run and after. Warm up, conduct the training, and cool down. Stretching goes a long way to recovery, so does chocolate milk.

GOOD HABITS:• Sign up for a race event. • Get a running partner and schedule

running times and dates.• Hold each other accountable for the

training.• Put the training times and date of the

race on your wall calendar and set alarms on your PED.

• Post photos of runners on your fridge and mirrors. Put them where you will see them every day.

• Keep notes concerning your training – what you ate, when you ate, the weather conditions and what you wore, your general attitude, times and miles, heart rate, pace…etc.

OBSTACLES:• Weather - get used to it! You will have

weather everyday so prepare for it. Every day is a good day to run you just have to adjust for the weather.

• Your mind is going say no - that’s why you have a running partner who is counting on you to be there for training.

• Can’t find “me” time - there will always be “more important” stuff to do. Enter the running partner…

• Trained too hard, went too far the first work out - start slow and build the proper foundation. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Pun intended.

• Workout pain - reduced by proper stretching, proper form, spray and rubs.

• Common running injuries can be lowered with proper stretching, training, shoes and other equipment.

CHANGING OLD HABITS: Junk / processed foods, fast food, alcohol, empty TV / computer time are all habits hard to break. A running partner of mine went cold turkey on all of the above; he is currently an elite runner. I, on the other hand, am stuck in a vicious “eat junk food, feel guilty must workout, just worked out, reward myself with junk food, feel guilty must workout” cycle.

BENCHMARKS HELP KEEP ME ON TRACK: Hit the training schedules suggested times and distances.Continually reassess and update your training schedule.

Look at your peers and compare your results with theirs – this can be dangerous and cause you to push harder and faster than your body is ready for – it is just a guide. RUN YOUR OWN RACE! Challenge yourself to beat your last finishing time.

-Richard Roth

If you’re an MCCS employee, Employee Development has training classes throughout the year that focus on addressing change and developing effective habits. The Change Element is a training that focuses on how to deal with change happening around you and also how to approach personal or intrinsic change. The behavior loop shown above illustrates how habitual behavior occurs, but it also shows you how to create a new habit using the same principles. Other trainings we offer employees on self-improvement are our 7 Habits for Associates and 7 Habits for Managers based on Stephen Covey’s 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. If you are part of our MCAS community at large we can refer you to other great MCCS activities such as our LifeSkills trainer at Marine Corps Family Team Building, Personal Trainers at the IronWorks gym or a multitude of other resources that MCCS Iwakuni offers to everyone in the community not just MCCS employees.

MEDEVAC: NAVIGATING THROUGH THE MEDICAL EVACUATION PROCESS

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

MEDEVAC

MCFTB ARTICLE

Being in a foreign country requires you to have a basic sense of self-responsibility. We should all have some knowledge of what to do when there is a typhoon, a NEO, or in the case of this article, a MEDEVAC. Many people think that the only people who would be medically evacuated are those women who are pregnant. However, only 19% of MEDEVACs are for OB/GYN appointments. The largest medical specialties requiring a MEDEVAC are orthopedic cases! Only a certain amount of people on base can become pregnant, but all of us can get an orthopedic injury.

We all know that our base is small and that we have a “clinic”, not a hospital on base. The medical staff does their utmost best to provide medical support to active duty, family members and civilians here on base; however, there are medical situations (psychological, neurological, general surgery, cardiovascular, dental, etc.) which may require some individuals to move to another treatment facility outside of Iwakuni. In fact, the Medevac Office processes about 55 Medevacs monthly. Depending on the severity of your condition, you may be transported to the following locations: Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Naval Hospital

Okinawa, Navy Medical Center San Diego, Tripler Army Medical Center (in Hawaii), Fukuoka Urosoe Sleep Study Center or somewhere CONUS.

How are you going to get there? Don’t worry, you won’t have to hitch hike. There are several ways you can be MEDEVACed for medical care outside Branch Health Clinic Iwakuni. You can either go by MILAR (Military Aircraft), Rail (Shinkansen), Commercial Air, or referred to local facilities. Before you get on either one of these transportation methods, you first need to follow through the MEDEVAC process listed below.

Be sure you pack copies of medical records, your military ID, official passport if traveling

overseas, TAD orders to travel for you and your attendant, extra medication and supplies

in case of MEDEVAC extension, and yen or dollars for reimbursable or incidental

expenses. While you are in transit, remember to save all your meal receipts. If you use a

taxi or other transportation, save those receipts as well.

For more information on the MEDEVAC process, please feel free to contact the Branch

Health Clinic Iwakuni MEDEVAC office at 253-5825/6835 or attend the Marine Corps

Family Team Building quarterly MEDEVAC Brief(see details below).

STEP ONE: See your Primary Care Medical Provider who will recommend or order a MEDEVAC for your situation.

STEP TWO: Go to the MEDEVAC office and provide contact information and dates of availability. If a Non-Medical Attendant (NMA) is needed or desired, this is the time to request one.

STEP THREE: The MEDEVAC staff will coordinate an appointment date with the receiving hospital or treatment facility. You are responsible for being in contact to find out when the appointment date is set. MEDEVAC sends information to the sponsor’s S-1 for orders.

STEP FOUR: The sponsor’s command will provide you (the patient) with orders at least three days before the scheduled appointment.

STEP FIVE: After receiving orders and having travel funding approved, you and your NMA will receive a MEDEVAC brief from the MEDEVAC clerk.

STEP SIX: You will receive tickets from DMO via the MEDEVAC office. If you are a civilian, you will be provided a notification letter of your MEDEVAC. You are responsible to turn your letter into CHRO if the employer funded the MEDEVAC.

Hello, my name is Lakeyia Brown, I am a senior Career Practicum student and an intern with the MCCS Marketing and Communication Team! Who is Lakeyia? I was born in Germany and I moved raised in Japan. I have lived between Yokosuka Naval Base, Yokota Air Force Base literally my whole life until now; Iwakuni is my new home. Living on the big bases was nice, especially living near the city, but Iwakuni is a family-oriented community that leaves no one behind, I enjoy it. With that being said, I appreciate living here and meeting the incredible people that live on this base. Not only are the people and the atmosphere incredible, but the facilities and resources on this base are plentiful, which is very useful. I will be writing about events that will appeal to teens. It is important

that my generation stay involved in the community and utilize as many resources as we can on this base, I look forward to bringing you a new perspective to what MCCS offers, lending my voice to the teens on the base and introducing new ways for my generation to get involved.
