GANNON HEAD COACH: An eight-year veteran of the program, Brad Rzyczycki is in his third season as head coach at Gannon. He has posted a 15-15 overall record with the Golden Knights and has clinched the program’s first back-to-back winning seasons since 2009-10. Rzyczycki served as defensive coordinator at Gannon for five years before being appointed head coach in 2012. He previously was the defensive coordinator at Kentucky Wesleyan, which now competes as an independent in NCAA Division II, for four years.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN KNIGHTS: Gannon returns 20 players with at least five starts from a team that tied for third in the PSAC West standings. The Golden Knights lead the league in scoring offense (39.6 points/game) and rank second in total offense (503.1 yards/game). Gannon features a three-year starter at quarterback in junior Liam Nadler and boasts the league’s leading rusher in junior Brock Jones. Nadler ranks fourth in the PSAC with 2,257 passing yards while completing 63.0 percent (167-of-265) of his attempts. Last week, he broke his own single-game school record with 494 passing yards and accounted for seven touchdowns (two rushing). Behind a pair of 200-yard games, Jones sits fourth in NCAA Division II with 1,201 rushing yards after totaling only 28 rushing yards in 2013. Senior Justin Caliste, a three-time All-PSAC West selection as a return specialist, ranks among the top five in the league with 61 catches and 730 receiving yards. Gannon ranks third in the PSAC in scoring defense (19.1 points/game), total defense (311.4 yards/game) and rushing defense (87.0 yards/game). Sophomore defensive back Mike Zanders leads the team with 65 stops (34 solo) after posting four interceptions last season. Redshirt junior defensive back Mike Phillips, the team’s leading tackler in 2012, has tallied 56 stops (23 solo), while sophomore defensive lineman Matthew Gawlik leads the team with 7.5 TFL and 4.5 sacks. On special teams, true freshman Karch Holland is tied for second in the PSAC with nine field goals with a long of 47 yards. Caliste, who has a combined five career kick and punt returns for touchdowns, continues to handle the return duties for the Golden Knights.
WHO’S IN: The initial Super Region One rankings were released on Monday and the PSAC features four teams in the rankings with Cal U slotted third. The region enters the weekend with a pair of undefeated teams. Super Region One consists of four conferences - PSAC, MEC, CIAA and NE-10 - and no league earns an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Playoffs. The top-two teams in the final regional rankings receive first-round byes, while the third and fourth seeds hosting first-round games.
GETTING ATTENTION: Cal U cracked the AFCA poll for the first time this week at No. 25 and jumped up four spots to No. 19 in the latest D2Football.com poll. The Vulcans have received at least one vote in the every AFCA poll this year. Cal U is ranked in both polls at the same time for the first time since 2012 when it reached as high as No. 6 in the AFCA poll.
LEGWORK: With his 11 points last week, senior kicker Cody Nuzzo moved past All-American running back Antoine Bagwell for second place in school history with 280 career points. Nuzzo ranks third overall in the PSAC, and first among kickers, with a career-high 73 points this season. He has made 13-of-16 fields goals, including a school-record 50-yard attempt, and is tied for fourth among active players in NCAA Division II with 41 career field goals.
HOME SWEET HOME: Cal U has posted a 53-10 overall record (.841) at Adamson Stadium since 2005, highlighted by a 30-3 mark (.909) against opponents in the PSAC West.

2014 Cal U Football Game Notes www.calvulcans.com
TAG TEAM: The running back tandem of senior Terrell Roberson and sophomore Nick Grissom combined for 152 rushing yards and 34 attempts last weekend. The duo has combined to rush for 1,056 yards and 16 touchdowns, as the Vulcans are averaging nearly 150 rushing yards/game this season. Grissom and Roberson have both totaled over 500 rushing yards, marking the first time Cal U has two 500-yard rushers since 2009.
PICKING UP CHUNKS: In last week’s victory, the Vulcans tied a season high with nine offensive plays that went for at least 20 yards with two resulting in touchdowns. Cal U has tallied a combined 44 ‘explosive plays’ (page 11) this season, including 28 in the first half of games. Wide receivers Garry Brown and Kowan Scott have combined for 25 ‘explosive plays’ and six of Scott’s seven touchdowns this season have been for at least 20 yards.
IN THE MIDDLE: Senior linebacker Spencer Lynn has registered at least 11 tackles in each of the last three weeks, including a team-high 12 stops (three solo) at Clarion last Saturday. He leads the team and is tied for fourth in the PSAC with 71 stops (30 solo) after starting only a combined four games over the last two seasons. Lynn is on pace to eclipse his career high of 90 tackles as a redshirt freshman when he started all 13 games in 2011.
FLIPPING THE FIELD: Last weekend, senior punter Andrew Cerett averaged over 50 yards per punt while still placing three of his four punts inside the Clarion 20-yard line. He leads the PSAC and ranks fifth in the country with an average of 44.0 yards/punt and has recorded 10 punts of at least 50 yards. A two-time All-PSAC West selection, Cerett ranks second among active players in NCAA Division II with a career average of 43.0 yards per punt (min. 100).
BEHIND THE LINE: Senior linebacker Jeff Knox, Jr. has recorded at least 1.0 TFL in each of the last six games. He established career highs with 11 tackles (seven solo), 3.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks last weekend at Clarion, including a sack in the end zone during the final minute of the game. After being the team’s leading rusher last year, Knox currently ranks in the top 10 of the PSAC with 9.5 TFL and 5.5 sacks while also recording four forced fumbles.
NO ROOM TO RUN: The Vulcans rank second in the PSAC and fifth in NCAA Division II this season in rushing defense, allowing a stout 82.1 yards/game. Cal U has allowed only three teams to eclipse the century mark in a game this season with a season-high 164 yards on 48 attempts at Bloomsburg. The Vulcans have also allowed only a single 100-yard rusher while facing four of the top-five leading rushers in the PSAC.
STARTING OVER: In last week’s victory at Clarion, junior quarterback James Harris threw his first interception since overtime on Sept. 13. He finished with a streak of 182-straight attempts, spanning 12-plus quarters, without throwing an interception. Harris ranks third in the PSAC with 2,271 passing yards and sits fourth in the league with 17 touchdown passes and a 151.9 efficiency rating.
IN CONTROL: With two weeks left of divisional play, Cal U and Bloomsburg both control their own fates in terms of reaching the PSAC Championship on Nov. 15 (West site). The Vulcans and Huskies both have a one-game lead in the divisional standings and hold a head-to-head tiebreaker with the teams currently in second place.

Quarterback James Harris finished with 284 passing yards on 18-of-33 attempts. He passed for three first-half touchdowns, each to a different wide receiver, and threw his first interception since Sept. 13, which ended a streak of 182-straight attempts without an interception. Running backs Terrell Roberson and Nick Grissom combined for 152 rushing yards against the Golden Eagles. Roberson totaled 83 yards on 19 attempts and two scores, while Grissom posted 73 yards on 15 carries. After Clarion scored midway through the fourth quarter, Cal U forced a turnover on downs deep in Golden Eagles territory after an intentional grounding penalty. The Vulcans later turned the ball over on downs at the Golden Eagles 2-yard line before recording a quarterback sack in the end zone with less than one minute remaining in the game. Linebacker Spencer Lynn led the team with 12 tackles and fellow linebacker Jeff Knox, Jr. posted 11 stops, 3.5 TFL and 1.5 sacks.
