The next Speaking for Illinois 4- H Training will be held Saturday,
October 5 in Matteson, Illinois. Registration materials are availableat: https://webs.extension.uiuc.edu/registration/default.cfm?RegistrationID=8714 .
Speaking for Illinois 4-H is a wonderful opportunity to expand the leadership potential of high
school 4-H members. Applicants must be 14-18 years of age, willing to complete a full-day
training, and totally interested in working with their county and Unit to advance the 4-H
program! Whether it be by speaking to county board members or state legislators, recruiting
volunteers, soliciting new donors, or speaking to civic groups, the youth who attend SFI4-H
training learn how to tell their 4-H story. Information on preparing presentations, examining
your audience, Positive Youth Development (BIG-M), and working together to get your
message across is covered in fun and interactive ways. And the youth who participate in
SFI4-H training receive special invitations to participate in the spring Legislative Connection
events at the State Capitol and apply for National 4-H Conference in Washington, D.C.
SFI4-H is totally planned and taught by members of the Illinois State 4-H Youth Leadership
Team. Deadline to register is September 25th.
Illinois 4-H announced that it will join AT&T in the “It Can Wait” campaign as
its members encourage drivers to take the pledge not to text while driving.
Illinois 4-H members are asking drivers to help make the state safer and to
save lives by sending a simple text message. To take the pledge, anyone
can text “4H4ICW” to “50555.” “It’s a small way to make a big difference,”
said Angie Barnard, executive director for the Illinois 4-H Foundation.
AT&T presented these facts in the effort to end texting and driving:
More than 100,000 crashes a year involve drivers who are texting (Source: National Safety
Council)
75 percent of teens say texting and driving is “common” among their friends (Source: AT&TWireless Survey)
97 percent of teen drivers say texting while driving is dangerous ― yet 43 percent admit todoing it. (Source: AT&T Teen Driver Survey)
“The members of Illinois 4-H are committed to making a difference in the ‘It Can Wait’ campaign,
and we will be encouraging friends and family members to take the pledge to never text and
drive,” said Barnard. “We’re excited to spread the message through the
state with our 23,000 members in 1,250 4-H clubs.”
