GOULBURN MURRAY COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE FINANCIAL AND

OF THE YEAR. PHOTO COURTESY OF RIVERINE HERALD

The Fairley Leadership Program, the flagship community leadership program in the Goulburn Murray region aspires to develop leaders as ‘catalysts for positive change’ in the region. In this my first year as the Executive Director for the Fairley Leadership Program, there have been challenges and opportunities, but the reward of seeing the journey, growth and change of our cohort over the past eleven months has been a privilege beyond compare.
Our Program’s strength is the ability to bring together people from a range of ages, and sectors to learn and reflect on the regional issues and to hear from local leaders in social, political, economic, health, government, cultural, education, agricultural and environmental sectors. The Cohort members had the opportunity to listen to and engage with over 120 leaders at a local, regional, state and national level.
I would like to thank the cohort for their commitment and trust in the Fairley Leadership journey this year. Of course our Fairley participants could not achieve all that they need to during the year without the support of their employers, family and friends and we gratefully acknowledge their support this year.
The Fairley Leadership Program would not function without the generous support of our sponsors, supporters and guest speakers this year, many of whom donate their time, energy and expertise to help develop our community leaders.
To our hosts, who generously offer their facilities and provide catering for the Fairley Leadership Program Seminar Days, I would like to express our gratitude to you for your ongoing support. Without your support the Fairley Leadership Program would not have had the longevity of the last seventeen years.
I would like to acknowledge the Victorian Government for their support through the Regional Growth Fund and for the support of the Victorian Regional Community Leadership Secretariat, Ms Katrina Baddeley and the nine other Victorian Regional Community Leadership Programs and Leadership Victoria. A special thank you to Chris Kotur and Kim Scanlon, whose guidance and support has been invaluable in my first year as the Executive Director – thank you.
I feel privileged to have worked so closely with this year’s cohort. I am extremely proud of the professional manner in which they conducted themselves, the compassion they showed to both our guest speakers and each other and their willingness to take on a community environmental arts project and make it their own. All these attributes lead me to have the confidence that these remarkable people will have a positive influence on the region in the years to come.
I wish all the 2013 Fairley Leadership Graduates all the very best for the future, and remind you that your community leadership journey does not stop here, you are now a part of the over 450 Fairley Leadership Alumni, known affectionately as Fairley Fellows. As Fairley Fellows I look forward to seeing the impact of your community leadership.
In reflecting on the words you heard at the very start of the year, I encourage all of the 2013 graduates to ‘open your hearts, your minds and your arms’ to the vast opportunities community leadership roles offer you in the future.
Amanda McClarenExecutive Director
IWhen we first gathered with a group of enthusiasts to create a community leadership program in
the Goulburn Valley, some 16 years ago, I remember a number of “wise old heads” saying the program
would survive for a few years and then we would “run out of good candidates.” I often reflect on those
comments - with considerable delight!
Year after year, each and every cohort has added demonstrable value to our community; those of
us who were “in at the beginning” are so very proud of the program participants since 1997. Their
influence, their activity, their fingerprints are everywhere around us – in local and state government,
in our water authorities, on our community boards and sporting clubs, service clubs and fundraising
groups.
Last year, for instance, I made the heartfelt observation that the need for community leadership
had never been greater: the partisan character of our political debate, the feelings of angst and
uncertainty among Australians (despite our relative prosperity and security compared to the rest of
the world) seemed to imply a community which was crying out for reassurance, direction, purpose -
and principled leadership.
And what has occurred in the year since? Two remarkable initiatives: the launch of the Lighthouse
Project, a 20-year program to support early intervention and furnish primary schools with the tools
and support services to address some of the “wicked problems” in our community that have defied
conventional solutions – energised by a board replete with Fairley fellows and driven by the Fairley
Foundation.
Then, the launch of the Committee For Greater Shepparton, a gathering of regional leaders from
the business, agribusiness and institutional sectors of local government, water, health, educational
and community agencies – a formidable alliance sharing the goal of improving the prosperity and
amenity of the regional community. Again, it is heavily populated with Fairley Fellows.
I congratulate the new Fairley Fellows of 2013 – you have become part of a worthwhile endeavour
and I look forward to your contribution to the betterment of our community.
Ross McPhersonPatron
Whilst the 2013 Cohort has been fulfilling their commitment to undertake this year’s program, the
Board has been doing a lot of work behind the scenes to ensure not only that we continue to deliver
a quality course but to secure the long term viability of the program.
To this end Fairley Leadership has entered into partnerships with the La Trobe University Regional
MBA Program in Shepparton and GOTAFE to give our alumni the opportunity to undertake
business management courses. Both these organisations will offer the Fairley Leadership Fellows
course credits for leadership modules, simply because they have completed the program. This is a
testament to the value our community places on the Fairley Leadership Program.
In addition, I and other Board members have participated in various forums such as the Victorian
Regional Community Leadership Programs (VRCLP) Professional Development Days. This has given
us broader exposure to governance training, networking and the potential for sharing resources. To
complement this we also have completed risk management and strategic planning, all fundamentals
of Board responsibilities.
We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Victorian Government through the Regional
Growth Fund and our regional partners, the City of Greater Shepparton, Goulburn Broken Catchment
Management Authority, Goulburn-Murray Water and Goulburn Valley Water for their commitment to
the Fairley Leadership Program in 2013.
In 2014 the Board will strive to secure future funding, strengthen existing as well as forge new
partnerships and greater community exposure which will consolidate our position in the community
for years to come.
I sincerely thank my fellow Board members who generously give up their free time for Board
meetings and various committees. As a team I feel we have made significant progress into addressing
the challenges that we foresee over the next 2 years. I would like to personally acknowledge and
thank our Executive Director Amanda McClaren and Executive Assistant Tracey Creighton, both of
whom show a level of professionalism, commitment and enthusiasm that give the Board a lot of
encouragement.
To the cohort, it was pointed out at this year’s launch that this is “not a free ride”. You have embarked
on a journey by undertaking the Fairley Program and it now time for you to repay the faith placed
upon you by your family, friends, employers and community. Now is the time to step up to be true
leaders and you will do so knowing you have the support of the entire Fairley Leadership community.

Future Goals and Plans
Continuing as an active participant within

move through their education. However, as
my family commitments decrease I hope to
find a voluntary role within an organisation
that I am passionate about and reflects my
own values and vision for the area and who
will benefit from my experience and skills.
Inspiration, Change and Motivation
The Fairley program has consolidated and
broadened my knowledge of the
Goulburn Valley. My understanding of the
complex challenges and issues facing the
region has been greatly enhanced.
It has been inspirational to meet the local
leaders who are working to overcome these
challenges and securing a positive future for
all in this area.
My Passion
My family is my number one passion. Their
best interests are at the core of all my
decisions and community involvement.
IRIS AMBROSE KYM BAILEY
attending functions at United Nations High
Commissioner of Refugees (UNHCR) and the
National Press Club.
My Passion
Easing the transition to university study
of mature age students who take the
opportunity to pursue regional higher
education.
Most Inspirational Speaker
Cathy McGowan AO, now standing as an
independent for the seat of Indi. Her topic
of “bloom where you are planted” was an
inspiring talk about contributing to your
community just as we began this program
and has resonated ever since while listening
to other local leaders.
Key Take-Away Message
Learning from other’s leadership journeys
can also lead to action in our own
aspirations.
My goal following Fairley
My goal for next year is to either join an
active community group or to stand for a
board position.
Leadership Quote
“Never doubt that a small group of
thoughtful, concerned citizens can change
the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that
ever has.” - Margaret Mead.
Additionally working for an organisation
whose values reflect my own and has a
positive impact on the local community.
Most Inspirational Speaker
Peter Bicknell, Partner, MB + M Business
Solutions. I really appreciated Peter’s
honesty and straight forward advice. He
is a local leader who has made a positive
contribution to the community by following
his heart and passions.
Key Take-Away Message
Stay above the Line; Family should always
come first; Get involved in causes you are
passionate about and get out when you lose
the passion; You have to first dream it before
you can do it; It is OK to say no.
My goal following Fairley
Having recently stepped into a management
position, I would like to concentrate on
consolidating this role over the next 12
months and I imagine I will draw on much of
what I have learnt over the past 12 months
to assist me achieve this to great success.

Future Goals and Plans
I have started a young farmers group for

support young people in small towns. I want
to start more projects that work with young
people in their 20’s to 40’s in small towns in
agriculture as well as young professionals.
Inspiration, Change and Motivation
Focus and persistence is the key to achieving
goals. I have been inspired by the life
stories of successful people in our local
communities and I believe that if they can
achieve personal, community and business
goals then I can too. Being part of a diverse
cohort has also given me some very different
perspectives on local issues and that is a
fantastic eye opener.
My Passion
I love the agriculture industry and I am
driven to find better ways to promote this
diverse and fundamental industry to the
boarder community and urban dwellers as
I believe it is important to understand how
the food that we eat every day is produced.

experience. You can see yourself change and
see yourself through the eyes of others in
a way that you don’t in day-to-day life. This
and the guest speakers input cause you to
re-evaluate what is possible, and where you
can focus your energies for the benefit of the
wider community.
My Passion
Big ideas. The canvassing of different,
large scale & long term ideas based on
experiences of other places and thoughts
SAM BIRRELL
and writings of those who approach
subjects with intellectual vigour. If we can
have discussions based on this we can move
our community forward.
Most Inspirational Speaker
Assistant Treasurer, Senator The Hon Arthur
Sinodinos AO. He gave real leadership
lessons – on honesty and authenticity. He is
an inspiring politician who is a great thinker,
and considerer of issues (as opposed to
those who are totally party political).
Key Take-Away Message
It is essential to consider issues from
all angles, and you will be much more
influential if there is personal honesty and
integrity to your argument.
My goal following Fairley
To move on with life, but push to apply the
big ideas to the future of the Shepparton
community. I intend to pick a few channels
and focus on these for a pre-set period of
time.
Leadership Quote

them well rather than try to spread myself
too thin. Pick something I am passionate
about and do it really well.
My Passion
My passion is sport and an active lifestyle.
An active community is my vision for the
future. I would love to see more people
in Shepparton walking or riding to work/

experiences but is so down to earth. He was
a very humble leader and gave us some
wonderful leadership messages.

Future Goals and Plans
I wish to continue with my education and
work towards obtaining a degree. I am
also interested in continuing my work with
raising awareness and improving access for
people living with a disability. My priority is
to educate my four children and give them
the required foundations to move forward
in their lives.
Inspiration, Change and Motivation
My greatest inspiration, change and
motivation came from the other participants
when they shared in their ‘about me.’
Watching their confidence and leadership
grow throughout the year changed the way
I look at things. Fairley has given me more
motivation to ‘step up,’ believe in myself and
get out of my comfort zone.
My Passion
Firstly, I am very passionate about my
children. I believe as a community, we need
to invest in our children as they are the
LOUISE DWYER
future. I am also passionate about ensuring
all people have equal opportunities to
participate in life.
Most Inspirational Speaker
I was very inspired by Cameron McGregor
(Drug and Alcohol Counsellor). He didn’t
see himself as a leader; however, it was
obvious that to many he is. He changes lives
of people for the better on a daily basis. He
truly is an inspiration and I take my hat off
to him.
Key Take-Away Message
Leadership begins in your own backyard. If
I want my children to be the best they can
be, I need to lead by example and prove that
age (even motherhood!), is no barrier.
My goal following Fairley
My goal for 2014 and onwards is to not miss
an opportunity. Continue with educational
opportunities which may arise. Stay in
contact with my cohort and continue to

and to further my career within the
community sector through further study.

Future Goals and Plans
Continue to be involved in environmentally
focussed community groups. Acting
locally, and putting my skills and expertise
to use through community involvement is
important to me and I will pursue any roles
where I can be effective in improving the
conservation of our environment through
increasing community knowledge and
concern for the issues.
Inspiration, Change and Motivation
Fairley has provided many opportunities to
be inspired to do more for our community.
Increased knowledge about the many issues
confronting our community has often been
a remarkable experience. I am inspired by
my fellow cohort members, who amaze
me by their passion and involvement in a
wide variety of community roles. Through
Fairley I have reassessed where I can be most
usefully engaged with the community.
JEN WILSON
My Passion
My passion is conserving the natural
environment through community
engagement, activism and education. It is
only when people connect with and care
about the environment will it become an
appreciated, valuable and intrinsic part of
our lives.
Most Inspirational Speaker
Chris Kotur, Facilitator (opening retreat). I
was inspired by her passion and knowledge
of leadership and community engagement.
Her simple messages have stayed with me,
such as choosing to stay ‘above the line’ and
finding something useful in all experiences.
Key Take-Away Message
Take time to listen everyone has a story and
try not to judge them, be passionate about
what you do, leaders empower others, lead
from the middle and behind, imagine a new
future.
My goal following Fairley
My goal is to be a better leader of influence,
to be able to identify and seize opportunities
when they arise. I will continue to build on
my community involvement and enhance
and develop networks gained through
Fairley.
Leadership Quote
“The future is not some place we are going
to, but one we are creating.” - John Schaar,
futurist.
