Join us for the 2013 Eugene Celebration, an annual festival that brings our community together in Eugene’s downtown to celebrate our unique and beautiful city! This year, the Celebration will be more vibrant than ever, as Eugene’s investment in downtown has paid off. There is so much to see and do in the revitalized Eugene downtown core: Over 20 new businesses ranging from restaurants and pubs, to retail and gift shops, Lane Community College’s state of the art LEED Platinum certified downtown campus, creative companies with hundreds of new employees in renovated office spaces, as well as future residential development for over 1500 new downtown residents have added to this rejuvenation.
Now in its 31st year, the Celebration has established itself as a late summer tradition for Eugene residents. The 2013 Celebration maintains its traditional flavor, boasting ten entertainment stages, indoor and out, with a fantastic lineup of musical acts. Annual favorites like the Celebration Parade, the Community Causeway, the Health and Wellness Celebration, and the Sustainability Village exhibit Eugene’s community-oriented approach. Psychedelic Soul, sometimes called black Rock, is a sub-genre of Soul music, which mixes the characteristics of Soul with Psychedelic Rock. It came to prominence in the late 1960s and continued into the 1970s, playing a major role in the development of Soul and Funk music. Over the past seven years, Monophonics have staked their claim as one of California’s premier bands.

Lead singer Vaughn Benjamin’s electrifying voice seems an amalgamation of many great voices in reggae--soulful, chanting, edgy. Vaughn’s potent lyrical style and his brother Ron Benjamin’s exquisite production, vocals, dub, arrangements, keyboard & bass musical arrangements form the nucleus of this musical, rootsy - heavy sound, which includes: Christian Molina (drums), Edmund Fieulleteau (guitar), Edwin Byron (guitar) and Ras L (keyboards).
Singer/pianist Marcia Ball knows how to raise roofs and tear down walls with her infectious, intelligent and deeply emotional brand of southern boogie, rollicking, roadhouse blues and heartfelt ballads. Over the course of her three-decade career, Ball has earned a huge and intensely loyal following all over the world. Her exquisite piano playing and passionate, playful vocals fuse New Orleans and Gulf Coast R&B with Austin’s deep songwriting tradition.

Authenticity is the key to the music of Rockabilly Hall of Fame members Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys. Although they’ve moved from their rockabilly roots to a sound that encompasses folk, bluegrass, Western swing, Cajun, and mariachi influences, the six-piece Southern California-based band continues to be faithful to the music of the past.
Oregon-native Nahko, born a mix of Apache, Puerto Rican, and Filipino cultures suffered an identity crisis from an early age. But the unifying power of music entered his life as a healing remedy. Armed with his newfound talent, he set out to bridge the cultural gaps dividing his own psyche and began producing a public, musical journal of his journey toward personal, spiritual, and communal healing.
Dumpstaphunk offers fans an unforgettable live experience steeped in the Big Easy tradition of a good time. The quintet features Ivan Neville on vocals, B3 and Clav, the double bass attack and soulful voices of Tony Hall and Nick Daniels III, Ian Neville on guitar, and the monster addition of Nikki Glaspie on drums and vocals.

San Francisco rock quintet New Monsoon is the collaborative vehicle for the vocal and instrumental prowess of founding members Bo Carper (acoustic guitar and banjo), Jeff Miller (electric guitar) and Phil Ferlino (keys). Formed by Russell Pollard (who formerly played with Sebadoh, The Folk Implosion, and Earlimart) in 2007, Everest caught national attention with the release of 2010 sophomore album, On Approach. While the record helped propel them onto bigger stages and put them in front of bigger audiences, most of the band felt the record only scratched the surface of what they could do.

Soul rockers Pickwick have introduced R&B to a whole new generation of Seattlites. With the release of Can’t Talk Medicine, fans beyond the Emerald City can experience their high energy, melodic blend of indie rock, blues and ‘70s-influenced soul.
Amongst the dusty records of UC Davis’ KDVS college radio station, Tom Shimura, who currently makes records as Lyrics Born, found too much to love. Sandwiched between gatefold LPs, 12-inch singles, dub versions and white-labels was a reservoir of inspiration that he would draw on for the following decades.

Menomena is an indie rock band featuring Justin Harris and Danny Seim. After giving away homemade demo CD-R recordings at local shows, Knopf, Harris, and Seim stuck with the DIY aesthetic of their early demos by recording their first album themselves. A lot has changed since KIDSPORTS began in 1953 as the Eugene Boys Athletic Association:
• In the 1960’s football was added• In the 1970’s soccer was added and the advent
of girls enrollment prompted a name change: Eugene Sports Program.
• In the 1980’s Springfield and outlying areas joined the program and as a result the KIDSPORTS name and brand has been in the community every since.
WHAT hasn’t changed in all these years is the focus on kids. Right from the beginning, the philosophy of the organization was different than that of other local, regional, and national groups. The EBAA rules were written to ensure playing time for all kids and inclusive player rotation. This philosophy has endured for 60 years now because quite simply, “all kids,” do want to play and can play with KIDSPORTS. “All KIDS play,” is not just about rules but as importantly, about providing children of low income families with the gift of play. KIDSPORTS legendary scholarship program helped 4,400 children play a sport for free last year in 2012.

KIDSPORTS is about kids, sports, and
fun. We’ve been providing sports programs for kids for 60 years now. KIDSPORTS never turns down a child who can’t pay, nor ever denies a child because of their athletic ability. “All KIDS play,” is what motivates KIDSPORTS to continue to lead the community in developing team sports opportunities for kids.
