A grocery store checker who becomes president of a supermarket chain. A college student who’s helped to her degree and

her first industry job. An executive returning from maternity leave who learns

to balance the demands of child raising and work.

This annual report opens with the stories of 10 Network of Executive

Women members who explain — better than we can — how the Network

has changed their companies, their careers and their lives.

NEW is a learning and leadership community connecting 7,000

members, 700 companies, 84 national sponsors and 19 regions in the

United States and Canada.

We believe women leaders bring something special to our business.

And we believe there are not enough of them.

The Network brings people together — emerging leaders and senior

executives, men and women, retailers and suppliers — to drive change,

support one another, share ideas, shatter barriers and lift the next generation

of women leaders.

The pages that follow will give you a measure of what our community has

accomplished in the past year. But this report cannot convey the countless

connections, the unmeasured “aha” moments or the profound power of

one leader helping another. This you must experience yourself — and in the

months and years ahead, we hope you will.

I was working in my current role with my eyes

on ’What’s next?’ I saw my peers continuing

to move up, but, with young kids at home,

I felt the need to slow my career progression

a bit. I wondered if it was okay to be a black

belt at something you love to do, rather than

pursue a higher position at that point. I came

to realize I could take my foot off the gas, but

have options in the future. I learned there is

no magic pill to make it all fall in line, but I

wasn’t by myself. NEW relationships helped

me discover my own work/life fit.”

has helped me think about what kind of leader

I want to be. Through the Network I have built

relationships with women I’d normally never

meet. We share our journeys and struggles. I’ve

learned I don’t have to balance work and life —

I can integrate them. I don’t need to feel guilty

when I step out to take a call from the school

nurse and my house doesn’t have to look like

Martha Stewart’s. Hearing the experiences

of very successful women has helped me let

some of my perfectionism go. I can embody a

more realistic standard to help me lead a high

performing, motivated and diverse team.”

I quickly became an advocate of the Network’s

mission and helped grow Clorox’s engagement

from one member to more than 200 across

the United States and Canada. Now we

are leveraging NEW as a ‘field employee

resource group’ to connect women leaders

to retail partners and industry peers. Today’s

global marketplace requires new approaches

and a diverse leadership team in terms

of worldviews, experiences and thought

processes. NEW is a key strategic partner

in creating a culture of inclusion, where

differences are valued and encouraged.”

my career goals were the same as they are now:

deliver distinguishable business results to enable

me to be top rated in my company and in the

industry. I had great roles and experiences, but

NEW gave me the opportunity to collaborate with

my peers — women and men — on something

we thought was critical: recruiting, retaining and

advancing women industry wide. NEW helped

me network, coach and be coached across

companies. This was important for me because

one can become insular if all of your networking

is within one company. Through NEW, I have built

an expansive network of great friends, mentors,

coaches and sponsors, and my involvement has

increased my industry profile. As a senior leader,

NEW continues to support me and others who have

reached the industry’s top levels. It is my belief

that your work is never done. There is always an

opportunity to contribute, learn, grow and develop.”

Measuring our success by the people we touchIn 2012, the Network touched more people and changed more organizations than any time in our history. Membership grew 38 percent to nearly 7,000. Organizations represented

grew 53 percent to more than 700. National sponsors grew from 73 to 84

companies — including 13 first-time sponsors — and sponsor contributions

increased 14 percent to nearly $2.4 million.

As our community grew, so did our impact: Attendance at our national

conferences grew 27 percent, setting new records for the NEW Leadership

Summit and NEW Executive Leaders Forum. The number of regional forums and

mixers grew 37 percent to 92 events — another all-time record.

More than 4,000 joined our NEW Leadership Academy and Town Hall

webinars live — more than double the number who attended in 2011.

Social media followers grew 73 percent, unique visitors to our website

increased 48 percent and subscribers to the Network’s newsletter grew 16

percent — all told we reached more than 132,000 individuals and made more

than a million impressions using online media throughout the year.

The Network’s supporters and staff took NEW’s message on the road dozens

of times in 2012, advancing our mission at learning events at our sponsoring

organizations and presenting panel discussions and receptions at major industry

events, including FMI, NACS and the Hispanic Retail 360 Summit.

Bringing our mission home to a community near youThe Network’s 19 regional groups do extraordinary things: They produce learning forums, host mixers, facilitate mentoring,

enroll local sponsors, recruit and engage new members, write press releases,

use social media and reach out to college students.

Run entirely by volunteers, our regional groups advance women and build

business from Seattle to Tampa, Toronto to L.A. In 2012, they held 33 learning

forums with an average of 266 attendees, hosted 59 mixers and outings, and

contributed nearly $700,000 to the Network’s total revenue.

Nearly one in 10 NEW members — 664 in total — served as a regional

officer, committee leader or volunteer in 2012, building their leadership skills,

raising their sights and creating lasting relationships along the way.

NEW honored its hardworking regional officers and volunteers at the first-

ever NEW Regional Awards Gala at the NEW Leadership Summit in October.

Achievement awards were presented to six regions and two individuals for

excellence in events, outreach, mentoring and administration.

Cathy Doyle of General Mills, who served as co-secretary of NEW New

England, accepted the Bobbie O’Hare Award as Regional Leader of the year.

NEW Florida was named Region of the year, joining past honorees Northern

Delivering knowledge, driving changeKnowledge is the ever-expanding business of the Network of Executive Women and in 2012 we delivered more learning,

best practices, research and news across more platforms than ever before.

More than 3,600 members participated in our NEW Leadership Academy

webinars; thousands more viewed NEW webinars at team training sessions and

in our online Study Hall.

We awarded scholarships to seven female college students pursuing industry

careers and supported students through regional outreach programs in the

United States and Canada.

We published two reports in our long-running NEW Best Practices series.

“Women, Leadership and the Power of the Purse: Gender Diversity in Canadian

CPG/Retail” featured insights from our groundbreaking survey of 428 industry

executives in Canada. “Changing the Game: Strategies for Harnessing the Power

of Female Talent” was mailed to c-suite executives throughout the industry and

shared with members online during two Town Hall webinars.

We posted hundreds of articles, interviews and blogs, reported the latest

research on women in business, created videos and presentations, delivered

three monthly newsletters, reached out to senior leaders through personal letters

and engaged the industry on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and youTube.

Our best-read stories in 2012 focused on gender diversity (“More men

become primary grocery shoppers”), workplace issues (“NEW sponsors named

best companies for moms”) and executive news (“Rosalind Brewer named

Sam’s Club CEO”).

Transforming the industry, one leader at a timeIt’s hard to pick a single highlight from the Network’s three national conferences in 2012. There was Larree Renda, executive vice president of Safeway, recounting

her personal journey at the NEW Executive Leaders Forum in August saying,

“Trying to be a man is a big waste of a woman.” There was Dr. Bertice Berry’s

electrifying opening address at the NEW Leadership Summit in October, heard

New beginningsThe year 2012 will be remembered as the point where we took a deep breath and asked, “What’s next?”

With 7,000 members, 700 companies, 84 national sponsors and 19 regions

in the United States and Canada, the Network of Executive Women comprises

the largest mission-driven organization serving the consumer products and

retail industry.

How we leverage this influence is the question posed by the Network’s

continuing NEW 2020 initiative, which began in 2012.

We interviewed 68 thought leaders, held six nationwide focus groups

and surveyed more than 200 industry executives of every age, job level and

background.

We learned employees want to advance on their own terms, reconcile their

lives and careers, and effect real change in their organizations. We learned

companies need to keep top talent while doing more with less. And we learned

that women bring special qualities to management and can be a powerful

catalyst for change.

The insights we’ve gained point the way to profitable new strategies for your

business — and a reimagined Network to help you achieve them.

We believe it’s time women take the lead in creating a better business

environment for everyone in our industry — and we are hard at work creating

a learning and leadership community that will help our members and partners

drive this change.

NEW 2020 means new learning and career development opportunities for

your employees, best practices for your organization and enhanced advisory

services that will help you build your business. We hope you will be with us on

the exciting journey ahead.
