THIS IS DEFIANCE AND PRESIDENT’S WELCOME

Defi ance College is a private liberal arts-based college providing outstanding academic programs and co-curricular activities for a student body of more than 1,000 students. Defi ance College of-fers students the best of both worlds. In a small campus environ-ment, students can have hands-on experiences in their fi eld of study through quality internships, domestic and international travel, diverse cultural encounters, and distinctive service and research opportunities for personal and professional growth.

The Princeton Review features Defi ance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community In-volvement. Defi ance College has been named for six-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past three years DC has been named a Military Friendly School for providing signifi cant benefi ts and services to veterans. Defi ance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its Community Engagement Classifi cation.

Defi ance College offers students a world of opportunities to en-hance their academic experience, from cultural visits in world-class cities across the continent, to international trips through the DC Global program, all of which open minds to new ideas and cultures and provide insights to help in competition for jobs and graduate school placement.

The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to pro-vide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the hu-man condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2011-2012 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program de-veloping leadership communication, confl ict resolution and cultural awareness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing op-portunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; and Project 701, a student-run nonprofi t organization.

Defi ance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Pro-gram, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifi cally address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood.

Student life is an important part of a Defi ance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, intercultural organizations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athletics, and four Greek chap-ters including a service fraternity.

As a national leader in the fi eld of service learning and engage-ment, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better – in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers. Approximately 10,000 men and women across the globe claim Defi ance College as their alma mater, and they excel in all walks of life.

Dear Fellow Defi ance College Fan,

The entire Defi ance College family joins me in wel-coming you to our campus and to today’s game.

We hope that while you are with us today, you will have the opportunity to explore as many parts of Defi ance College as possible and that you will share in the excitement about DC continuing to grow around the nation. This year’s entering freshman class is the largest in recent memory. During the past year, we have seen signifi cant increases in applications, with particular increases in applications from outside Ohio, as we become more and more a college with national reach and scope. In fact, this past year, more than half of the students applying to DC came from outside Ohio, representing 48 states and territories.

Why are students traveling from all around the United States (and other coun-tries as well) to attend DC? I think it is because Defi ance College offers stu-dents the best of all worlds. At DC, students get the individualized benefi ts of a student-centered, small college, but they also get a world of opportunities beyond. Let me explain.

As a small college, DC works to help students grow as people, providing in-dividualized attention in the classroom, the guidance of Personal Success Plans, mentoring, and assistance geared to the challenges and potential of each student. DC provides this in a rural, caring, and supportive setting, thereby enabling students to challenge themselves in new ways and grow as individuals, leaders, and citizens committed to service.

At the same time, however, through a broad array of curricular and extra-curricu-lar activities, DC opens to students an entire world of opportunities, helping stu-dents to develop a distinctive Defi ance College Resume that will enable them to stand out in the job market and when applying to graduate schools. From a broad-based liberal arts education; innovative programs that link what goes on in the classroom with the realities of the outside world and give students distinc-tive hands-on experience in their relevant fi elds; international and domestic trav-el opportunities; exposure to diverse cultural experiences; the use of technolo-gies to bring the world into the classroom in Defi ance; and unique service and research opportunities, DC aims to give students the tools they need to become life-long learners and to make distinctive contributions to a changing world.

While you are enjoying today’s events on campus, I hope you will have an op-portunity to get to know some of our students individually. They are a wonderful group, with incredible potential. I very much enjoy being part of the Defi ance College family with them, as they bring excitement, energy, fresh perspectives, and commitment to service – to name just a few of their many attributes.

I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organizations, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defi ance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D” all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations. And the incomparable faculty at DC, together with extremely dedicated admin-istrators and staff, all combine to make DC the special place that it is.

We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today, and I hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events we are so proud to host.

Go Jackets!

Sincerely,

Mark C. Gordon, President

The Defi ance College intercollegiate athletics program serves as a window of opportunity for all prospective student-athletes to experience an extra-curricular educational and physical activity that fi ts within the general mission of the college to develop the whole person.

The student-athlete will be exposed to a variety of opportunities for personal growth in the areas of intellectual, emotional, spiritual, social and physical dimensions as it relates to each individual and their respective sport. The student-athlete, as a team member, will be involved in a learning community that will strive for excellence both on the fi eld and in the classroom while maintaining a dignity of fair play and continued emphasis on positive sportsmanship. Jointly, the coaches and student-athletes will build an engaged environment that will accentu-ate the learning process not only within the competitive arena but also within the college cam-pus and the community as a whole. An emphasis will be placed on the impact of participation and personal growth, rather than scoreboard success, in a balanced sports program where equitable sports opportunities will be available to both genders.

The student-athletes of Defi ance College choose to participate in the intercollegiate athletics program for a variety of reasons but none of which includes athletic related fi nancial aid or the promise of fi nancial security through professional athletic stardom. Through participation in the intercollegiate athletics program, a student-athlete continues to compete for the love of sport, the thrill of competition and the fulfi llment of countless intrinsic values.

The Defi ance College intercollegiate athletics program strives to be an integral and cohesive part of the collegiate learning and living process, appropriately well suited to co-exist with the Defi ance College mission statement … to know, to lead, to serve and to understand.

DC ATHLETICS PHILOSOPHY

Page 7: 2012 Defiance College Men's Soccer Media Guide

55www.defi anceathletics.com

Defi ance College has challenged students to defy the ordinary, to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience.

Nowhere else will you fi nd students committed to their communities like Defi ance College, and nowhere else will you fi nd student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engage-ment.

During the 2011-2012 academic year, Defi ance College student-athletes contributed 2,028 hours of service in their community and around the country. Members of the men’s and women’s soc-cer teams contributed over 100 hours of service.

During the past year, the teams volunteered their time and talents by serving as referees for the Paulding youth soccer league and painting dugouts at the DC soccer fi eld.

Many student-athletes at DC have taken active roles in leadership and service initiatives cam-pus-wide. Such experiences give Defi ance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change. Men’s soccer team members Ian Fasnacht, Bobby Ordonio, Evan Allen and Jaren Prater are DC Service Leaders. Evan Allen is a McMaster Scholar to Belize and Ian Fasnacht is also a McMaster Scholar to Ghana.

Defi ance College is featured for excellence in blending academics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Com-munity Involvement. Defi ance is included in the President’s Higher Education Community Ser-vice Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.

Alex Van der Sluijs is in his third season as the head men’s and women’s soccer coach for Defi ance College in 2012. He also served as a graduate assistant for Defi ance during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. Van der Sluijs is in the process of rebuilding the program and looks to improve upon the records of both the men’s and women’s teams. After coming close to a 2011 conference tournament bid with a 3-4-2 league record for the men’s squad, the team is looking to get over the hump and post it’s fi rst .500-or-better record since 2006 and reach postseason play. In his fi rst two years at DC, Van der Sluijs has been able to coach up a few Yellow Jacket student-athletes to great success. For the men, there have been four players to earn Second-Team All Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honors along with a First-Team All-HCAC member. On the women’s side, there have also been four athletes to earn Second-Team All-HCAC awards. Prior to his career at Defi ance, Van der Sluijs attended Wilmington College, where he was a three-year starter on the men’s soccer team. The two-time Ohio Athletic Conference Forward of the Year earned First-Team All-OAC and All-Great Lakes Region honors three times, af-ter spending one season as a member of the Wright State program. Van der Slujis has also played professionally for the Cincinnati Kings in 2007 and the Dayton Dutch Lions in 2010. Van der Sluijs spent the 2007 season as an assistant coach for Wilmington, while also having served as a coach and trainer for the Lakota United Soccer Club, Thunder United Soccer Club and Midwest Soccer Academy.
