Second Round Wrapup — UCLA scored four unanswered goals in a 30-minute span in the second half and ousted Sacramento State, 4-1, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Drake Stadium on Sunday night. Sophomore forward Chandler Hoffman extended his scoring streak to four games with two goals (he has scored five goals in his last four games), and freshmen Reed Williams and Victor Chavez also scored for the Bruins.

Arreola Heroics Earn Him Honors — After scoring both goals in the Bruins' third round win over Dartmouth, junior midfielder Eder Arreola earned Top Drawer Soccer Player of the Week honors, as well as UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week acclaim. Additionally, Arreola was named to the National Teams of the Week for both Top Drawer Soccer and College Soccer News. Arreola now ranks tied for third on the team in scoring with 13 points (3g, 7a).

Hoffman Scoring Streak — Sophomore forward Chandler Hoffman has been on fire since making his first start of the season on Nov. 5. The Birmingham, AL native has scored either a goal or assist in each of his five games as a starter (five goals, one assist), including game-winning goals at Washington and at San Diego State. His four-game goal-scoring streak from Nov. 5-21 was the third-longest goal scoring streak in school history and just one game away from the school record of five, held by Joe-Max Moore (1991) and Billy Thompson (1988). Hoffman had a pair of goals in the NCAA second round win over Sacramento State and an assist in the NCAA third round game against Dartmouth. He missed the season's first 11 games with a fractured leg, suffered the first day of preseason training.

Bruin Cubs — Does youthful enthusiasm trump veteran experience? The Bruins are making a strong case for it with their their underclassman-heavy team. UCLA routinely starts seven underclassmen, with four juniors, four sophomores and three freshmen making the starting lineup in their last game against Dartmouth. In the second round NCAA game against Sac State, the Bruins started four juniors, three sophomore and four freshmen.

As a whole, Bruin underclassmen have seen the majority of playing time, recording 14,241 combined minutes, nearly double that of the upperclassmen's combined total of 7,320 minutes. Of the 19 different players who have made at least one start, 14 have been underclassmen - eight freshmen and six sophomores. Thirty-one of UCLA's 36 goals this year have been recorded by underclassmen - 9 by Victor Chavez, 6 by Kelyn Rowe, 5 each by Reed Williams and Chandler Hoffman, 3 by Evan Raynr, 2 by Ryan Hollingshead, and 1 by Joe Sofia. UCLA's lone upperclass goal scorers are juniors Eder Arreola (3g, 7a), Andy Rose (1g, 4a) and Shawn Singh (1g, 3a).

May We Assist You? — Midfielders Kelyn Rowe and Eder Arreola have been climbing up the Pac-10 leader-board for assists, with each ranking in the Top 5 in the conference. Rowe ranks second in the conference with nine assists, while Arreola is fourth with a career-high seven. Also ranked in the Top 10 in the conference are sophomore Ryan Hollingshead and freshman Victor Chavez, who are tied for seventh with five assists.

•Victor Chavez (23 points) and Kelyn Rowe (20 points) are the Bruins' first 20-point freshman duo since UCLA's record book was established in 1980.

In addition to Rowe's nine assists, he also has six goals and has thus had a hand in nearly half of UCLA's 36 goals this year. Six of Arreola's seven assists have come in conference play, and he ranks second in the Pac-10 in that category for conference games-only.

Young Defenders Playing Like Veterans — UCLA's backline of freshman Joe Sofia, sophomore transfer Matt Wiet, junior Shawn Singh and freshman Patrick Matchett only have six seasons of collegiate experience between the four of them, but they have been playing like seasoned veterans, help-ing goalkeeper Brian Rowe record eight solo and one shared shutout this year. The Bruins have a team goals against average of 0.92 for the year and a Pac-10-best 0.49 in conference play, and their nine shutouts are the most by a UCLA team since 2005.

Rowe leads the Bruin in assists (9) and is second in points (21) and goals (6). He was also named to the All-Pac-10 first team and was the only freshman to earn first-team honors.

Recruiting Class Ranked No. 1 — UCLA's recruiting class of 2010 was ranked No. 1 in the nation by College Soccer News. This was head coach Jorge Salcedo's third No. 1 recruiting class in his seven years at the Bruin helm and UCLA's fourth in the last eight years. The other top-ranked classes were in 2006, 2003 and 2004. Amongst the top recruits in the class are All-Americans Victor Chavez, Earl Edwards, Zack Foxhoven, Kelyn Rowe and Reed Williams, along with Joe Sofia and Patrick Matchett, who were ranked in the Top 25 of Top Drawer Soccer's Top 100 Players to Watch. Rounding out the class are two-time adidas ESP participant Reid Hukari and ODP Region IV team members Andrew Tusaazemajja and Bradley McIntosh. Additionally, UCLA gained the services of sophomore defender Matt Wiet, a 2008 High School All-American who transferred from Indiana University.

Player Rankings — Sophomore Ryan Hollingshead is listed at No. 84 in the lat-est (Nov. 11) Top Drawer Soccer's Top 100 Players to Watch list (sophomores, juniors and seniors only). Hollingshead ranks sixth on the team in scoring with nine points (2g, 5a).

now in his career. He had the game-tying assist in a 2-1 third round win over UC Santa Barbara in 2009. Sophomores Chandler Hoffman and Ryan Hollingshead played in all three tournament games a year ago, and each one scored the game-winning goal in the two Bruin victories. Other Bruin regulars with previous NCAA games under their belts are Shawn Singh (five starts), Eder Arreola (four games, three starts), Zack Zerrenner (two games, one start), Michael Roman (four games), and Evan Raynr (five games, one start).

Patrick Matchett's father Phillip swam and played water polo at UCLA. Joe Sofia's cousin Brian Brown won NCAA water polo championships at UCLA in 1999 and 2000. In his seventh season as head coach, former UCLA All-American Jorge Salcedo is enjoying one of his finest seasons, taking a very young Bruin squad to the NCAA Quarterfinals and to 16 victories, the most during his head coaching tenure.

A product of UCLA's strong soccer tradition, Salcedo has maintained the Bruins' standard for success, winning four Pac-10 titles and guiding his teams to NCAA Tournament appearances each year. He signed the No. 1 recruiting classes in the nation in 2010, 2006 and 2004, and those players produced results, advancing all the way to the NCAA Championship game in the 2006 season and to the quarterfinals in 2009 and 2010.

Over the last three seasons, the Bruins have won two Pac-10 titles and advanced to two NCAA quarterfinals while recording a 20-4-6 conference and 38-13-11 overall record.

In 2009, Salcedo's Bruins won their second-straight Pac-10 Championship in 2009, going 5-1-4 in conference play and 12-4-4 overall and advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals. Two Bruins - Kyle Nakazawa and Brian Perk - earned All-America honors, and a school record-tying five players were selected in the MLS SuperDraft at the conclusion of the season.

In 2008, Salcedo guided UCLA to the Pac-10 Championship and was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year for the second time in his tenure. The Bruins finished with a 10-5-6 record, and junior midfielder Michael Stephens earned Pac-10 Player of the Year honors and Soccer America MVP second team acclaim.

His 2007 team extended UCLA's post-season appearance streak to 25 consecutive years, advancing to the NCAA second round. The Bruins, who finished with a 9-9-3 record, scored in the classroom, with 24 of 30 team members making the Director's Honor Roll during the school year.

The 2006 Bruins faced an uphill battle with injuries to several starters throughout the season, but they fought through the adversity and ended a successful post-season run in the title game with a final season record of 14-6-4.

In 2005, Salcedo's Bruins recorded a 12-5-3 record and ranked amongst the best in the nation in team defense, allowing just 14 goals and posting a team goals against average of 0.67. The Bruins also captured the Pac-10 title for the fourth year in a row and earned a No. 5 seeding in the NCAA Tournament.

During his first season, Salcedo earned Pac-10 Co-Coach of the Year honors after leading UCLA to its third-straight conference title. His Bruins ended the regular season ranked No. 3 by Soccer America and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, where they finished the year with a 14-4-2 record.

In 2002, he served as acting head coach in a crucial road victory at Stanford in November that helped the Bruins capture their first-ever Pac-10 title. He also served as acting head coach in the spring of 2002 in the coaching transition between Todd Saldaña and Tom Fitzgerald and had served in a similar capacity after Fitzgerald announced his resignation.

Salcedo, who is a scout for the U.S. National Team, was the head coach of the 2002 U-16 SoCal ODP State team and was also the assistant coach of the U-17 team in 2001.
