Welcome to the 22nd Annual Capital of Texas Triathlon.This will be our second year as part of the Race to the Toyota Cup Triathlon Series and we truly are hosting an international field of professional triathletes. Additionally, we will be hosting some of the world’s best physically challenged multisport athletes as they compete in the 2012 USA Paratriathlon National Championship. Athletes will not only be racing for the National Championship, but also to represent the United States at the 2012 Tri-athlon World Championships. To show even more support for these dedicated athletes, the Chal-lenged Athletes Foundation has been selected as the 2012 CapTexTri primary beneficiary. New for 2012 is the First Responders division that is open to law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel. The First Responders will now receive special recognition along with the Military and Collegiate divisions. Since its move in 2002 to the Downtown Austin location, the CapTexTri has been held on Memorial Day. As part of our commitment to this national holiday, we started the Wounded Warrior Dinner in 2010 as a stand-alone fundraiser held in conjunction with the CapTexTri. The purpose of the Wounded Warrior Dinner is to honor the men and women of our Armed Forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the defense of our country and to raise money for Operation Rebound, a very worthwhile program that assists in the recovery and physical rehabilitation of severely injured military personnel through sports including triathlon. We hope that many of the participants in the CapTexTri will choose to attend the dinner and show their support of this very worthy charity. We also hope everyone will take a moment somewhere during the race to remember what these brave men and women have sacrificed for our safety and freedom. On behalf of R & B Sports, the CapTexTri Organizing Committee, and the hundreds of volunteers, we want to thank you for racing with us on Memorial Day. Our goal is to provide you with an event that is second to none and that you have a fun, fast, and rewarding experience at the 2012 Capital of Texas Triathlon.

Welcome to the City of Austin, Texas. On behalf of the citizens of the City of Austin, it is my great pleasure to welcome all of you attend-ing the 2012 Capital of Texas Triathlon, the Race to the Toyota Cup, and the USA Paratriathlon National Championship. We are delighted that Austin is hosting these very special events.

I do hope you will find time to enjoy some of the special things about Austin while you are here. We are particularly proud of our beautiful natural environment and our thriving cultural life.

The Wildflower Center in Southwest Austin, the spring-fed Barton Springs pool, and the hike and bike trails around Lady Bird Lake are just a very few of some of Austin’s well-known attractions. Austin’s cultural scene includes live music shows at any of our hundreds of local venues, as well as museums such as the Austin Museum of Art, the Blanton Museum of Art on the UT campus, the Washington Carver Museum and Mexic-Arte Museum downtown. We are privileged to be the home of outstanding historical museums as well: the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, the French Legation Museum, the O. Henry Museum, the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library & Museum at the University of Texas. And of course, you won’t want to miss visiting the Texas State Capitol or Austin City Hall.

All in all, I am confident you will find that Austin truly has something for everyone, and will be an exciting venue for the Capital of Texas Triathlon.

Our Beneficiary is the Challenged Athletes Foundation

Established in 1997, Challenged Athletes Foundation® (CAF) grew out of a desire to assist one athlete paralyzed in a triathlon. From this modest beginning arose a more important mission to make sure people with physical challenges have the same freedom to enjoy sports as everyone else. It is the mission of CAF to provide opportunities and support to people with physical dis-abilities so they can pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics. CAF believes that involvement in sports at any level increases self-esteem, encourages inde-pendence and enhances quality of life.

The Wounded Warrior Dinner is our fundraising dinner that is held on Saturday, May 26th at the Downtown Hyatt. Packet Pickup Reminders

About Your Photo IDAll participants, no exceptions, must provide a government issued photo ID that matches their registered name and appearance (within reason). Any state or government issued ID is acceptable.

USA TRIATHLON RULES STATE YOU MAY NOT PICK UP SOMEONE ELSE’S PACKET and you may not race under someone else’s name. Volunteers handling packet pickup do not have the power to override regulation, so please do not ask them to do so.

All participants are required to have some form of USAT membership. If you registered online or by mail prior to packet pickup, you were either asked for your current USAT membership number OR you were charged $12 automatically during your online registration. Only those registering at packet pickup are required to pay the $12 if they do not have a USAT Card. All current USAT members are required to show their current unexpired card. Temporary, printed, or digital cards are also accepted.

Stage #1 – Athlete ListsA. Find your assigned race # on the Athlete Lists posted at the entrance to the Expo.

Stage #2 – Check-In AreasA. Proceed to your appropriate race check-in area (Olympic, Sprint, or First Tri).B. Present your photo ID and either your USAT Membership Card or your CapTexTri one-day membership receipt (received via e-mail). If you do not have either a current USAT Annual Membership or a receipt showing you have paid for your CapTexTri one-day membership, proceed to the USAT table.C. Receive your race packet (packet items description on next page).D. Confirm that you have received a complete packet.E. Take the wristband and secure it to your right wrist. This is your ID for the weekend and will allow you access to the Athlete Only areas.

Stage #3 – Timing and Problem AreaA. If you desire, you can remove your chip from your packet and scan it at the timing table to verify that it is programmed correctly. If you find otherwise, inform the timing personnel.B. All participants who are under 18 must have an emergency contact person who is available at all times during the race. If the listed emergency contact is also participating, then a new contact who will be authorized to make medical emergency decisions must be added.

Stage #4 – Body MarkingThere will be a body marking booth if you choose to be marked on Sunday. Your race number will be applied to your upper arms and your age (as of 12/31/2012) will be placed on your right calf. If you are body marked on Sunday, please be careful when bathing before the race to be sure that your markings aren’t smeared or washed away.

Packet Pickup Items

Timing Chip, Ankle Strap, & Safety PinsTiming chip is to be attached to your Velcro ankle strap and secured to your left ankle at all times of the race. Use safety pins to secure bib numbers and safety strap if desired.

Latex Swim CapsColors match swim waves (see pages 16–17).

Race Bib Number and Number/ID Sheet Your bib number is to be worn during the run and visible from the front. If you are using a race number belt you can rotate the bib number to your back while on the bike but it must be rotated to the front while on the run. YOUR NUMBER MUST BE VISIBLE FROM THE FRONT WHEN YOU CROSS THE FINISH LINE.

• Wristband: must be worn at all times to identify you as a participant• Large Bike Number: attach to seat post or to rear brake cable• Small Bike Number: apply to front fork• Swim Cap Number: apply above the ORCA logo on your swim cap• Helmet Number: apply to front of your helmet• Wetsuit Number: apply to the inside of your wetsuit near the zipper• Transition Bag Sticker: apply to your T1 bag• Charity Support: Racing to Honor and Remember (fill in the name of your hero)• Window decal: not required

Apply stickers to clean and dry surfaces. You can get them wet later. Work the stickers into fabrics by applying pressure and rubbing the face of the sticker into the application surface. Apply the night before to let the adhesive set-up overnight. If the sticker pulls away from the surface, simply rub in and smooth back into place.

Swim StartDock start for professionals.Deep water start, perpendicular to shoreline just off the dock, for everyone else.

Swim Caps Each athlete is required to wear the swim cap included in the race packet. Swim cap colors are specific for each wave start.

Wetsuits Each age group participant is permitted to use a wetsuit without penalty in any event sanctioned by USA Triathlon up to and including a water temperature of 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Historically, the CapTexTri swim has always been wetsuit legal. Typical water temperature on race day is usually in the mid to high 60s and occasionally in the low 70s.

Swim Course MarkingsThe swim courses will be set with the help of the Austin Rowing Club. We plan to use a submerged cable system similar to what is used in rowing competitions which has very small red bobbers marking the cable. Very large marker buoys will be used to mark the turns and smaller intermediate marker buoys to mark the course.

Swim StagingSwim staging by wave starts will be on the trail to the west of the Stevie Ray Vaughn statue. Family, friends, and spectators will be allowed in the area but will be separated from the staged athletes by crowd control fencing.

Swimming AnxietyAnxiety at the start of the swim is the largest hurdle most athletes face in a triathlon. We strongly encourage everyone, especially first-timers, to have at least one practice swim in open water. We highly recommend that your practice be at Barton Springs Pool which will nearly duplicate the water tempera-ture and conditions of Lady Bird Lake. If you experience overwhelming anxiety when you start your race, stop and do everything possible to calm yourself down and catch your breath. Signal to the water safety personnel that you need assistance. It’s better to take a couple of minutes to regroup in order to con-tinue than to risk your safety.

Swimmer SafetyThe Water Safety Crew has the final word on whether an athlete will be allowed to continue if there is a question regarding an athlete’s ability to finish safely or within the allowed time limit.

If you do not finish the swim, it is mandatory that you report to the timing team or an official of the race to notify you are out of the water and then surrender your chip.

Bike Course ProtocolIt is EXTREMELY important to stay to the right side of the road except to pass. The bike course will get crowded and adhering to this simple rule will allow faster riders a clearer road on which to race.

Bike Cut-offAll cyclists need to be north of 11th and Congress on their last lap by 11:00 a.m. Any cyclists reaching this point after the cut-off will be turned around and directed to finish the lap that they are on from that point.

Athlete Safety/Maintenance Recommendations You will need to provide your own fluids for the bike. If it is hot (highly probable), the best time during the race to hydrate is on the bike. Try to drink at least 8-to 12-ounces of water or fluid replacement/energy drink on each lap of the bike course. Carry spare tubes, pump and any other equipment that you feel you might need.

Lap CountingAll athletes are responsible for keeping track of how many laps they complete. Timing mats will be lo-cated at the 1st and Riverside U-turn to confirm that you have completed the proper distance.

It is going to be hot on the run. There are 5 points on each 5K lap where aid stations will be located. Please pay attention to your hydration and body temperature during this run; it will take its toll. If you feel you are overheating, slow down, cool down, drink more water, and ease on in to the finish.

There are 4 hydration stations located on the run course as well as the Clif Shot Energy Zone.

#1 is just after you enter the run course and is staffed by Gilbert’s Gazelles. This station will have water and Gatorade.

#2 is located on Riverside Drive at ~Mile .8 on the first lap, and ~Mile 3.9 on the second lap of the Olympic distance course. This station is staffed by Jack & Adam’s Bicycles and will have water and Gatorade.

#3 is located at ‘The Bat’ at the intersection of Barton Springs Road and Congress Avenue. This station will be hit going out and coming back at ~Mile 1.4/4.5 and again at ~Mile 2.7/5.8. This station is staffed by BAE System and will have water and Gatorade.

#4 is located at 4th and Brazos at ~Mile 2 on the first lap and ~Mile 5.1 on the second lap. This station is staffed by Mix 94.7 and will have water and Gatorade.

The Clif Shot Energy Zone will be located at ~Mile 1 on the first lap and ~Mile 4.1 on the second lap. There will be 4 flavors of Clif Shots available at this station.

Transition Procedures

CapTexTri is a Secure Transition at all times! Only PARTICIPANTS with proper WRISTBANDS are allowed in or out of Transition.

Mandatory Bike Check-in begins at noon on Sunday for Olympic distance participants, 2:00 p.m. for Sprint and First Tri. Bring your helmet when you check your bike to make sure it is approved. You only need to leave your bike overnight. When racking your bike, the side of the rack with your number is the side where your bike wheel touches the ground.

Olympic Distance athlete check-in/body marking begins at 5:15 a.m. and the Olympic Distance Transi-tion opens at 5:30 a.m..

Sprint Distance athlete check-in/body marking begins at 7:00 a.m. and the Sprint Transition opens at 7:15 a.m.

First Tri athlete check-in/body marking begins at 7:15 a.m. and First Tri Transition opens at 7:30 a.m..Due to the large numbers of athletes that require body marking in such a short time frame on race morning, we encourage you to do your own body marking. Markings must be done using an XTRA LARGE or JUMBO black permanent marker (no standard size Sharpies). Marking must be BOLD AND LEGIBLE and easy to read by the officials and photographers from a distance. Athletes need to be marked as follows:

Right Upper Arm RACE # in stacked formatLeft Upper Arm RACE # in stacked format Right Calf AGE (remember your age designation is as of 12/31/2012)

Apply sunscreen AFTER you have been body marked.

Neutral Bike service will be provided by Mellow Johnny’s at the Mandatory Bike Check-in on Sunday and on race day. Bicycle mechanical support will be available inside each transition area during the race. There will be a MANDATORY HELMET CHECK as you enter transition on race morning. Your helmet will be checked to ensure it is CSPC approved and in good condition. Bikes will not be allowed outside the transition area for warming up prior to the events. The transition area will have assigned racking by race number. When racking your bike, the side of the rack with your number is the side where your bike wheel touches the ground. There is a limited area available for each athlete to rack their bike and set-up a transition site. Please keep your gear to a minimum and organized throughout the event. Remem-ber, NO GLASS CONTAINERS, are allowed in transition.

FOR THE SAFETY AND RESPECT OF ALL PARTICIPANTS, ONLY AFTER THE LAST OLYMPIC, SPRINT AND FIRST TRI PARTICIPANT BEGINS THE RUN WILL TRANSITION OPEN TO ALLOW PARTICIPANTS WITH PROPER WRISTBANDS TO RETRIEVE AND REMOVE THEIR EQUIPMENT AND BIKES (~11:00 for Olympic distance, 11:30 for Sprint and First Tri). YOUR WRISTBAND and RACE NUMBER MUST MATCH YOUR BIKE NUMBER TO BE ALLOWED TO REMOVE YOUR EQUIPMENT. ANY EQUIPMENT LEFT AFTER 2:00 p.m. WILL BE UNSECURE.

Medical Medical personnel will be located along the bike and run course. You can identify them by their special Medical Team shirt or EMS uniforms. The main medical tent will be located behind the finish line and is a secured area.

After the FinishAfter you cross the finish line you will be given your Finisher’s water bottle, return your timing chip, and receive your Finisher’s medal. Brightroom Photography will be at the exit of the finisher’s chute for pho-tos. There is an Athlete Only area once you leave the chute where food and cold drinks will be provided.

Race PhotosFinisher photos and other action photos will be provided by Brightroom. Race photos will be posted at www.captextriphotos.com

Volunteers Please be considerate of the volunteers who have taken their time to support this event. Without them, there would be no race. Volunteers can be identified by their special Support Team shirts. Please be generous with your “THANK YOU’s”. The volunteers will do their best to help when asked, but they may not know all of the answers. You, the athlete need to know the course and layout of the general race site. It is a very good idea to take some time when you are checking in your bike on Sunday to get yourself familiar with ”the lay of the land”.

Force MajeureThe CapTexTri event is very complex in nature and involves many different parties and their direct or in-direct relationships with the race may impact our response to weather and non- weather situations. Due to our urban setting, many different perils may cause the cancellation or delay of the start of the event or may even force changes to the course and distances of the disciplines, including but not limited to: potentially canceling one or more of the disciplines, altering or changing the course or distance of one or more of the disciplines, and changing the order in which one or more of the disciplines are completed or cancellation of the event. There will be no refunds granted for any reason including any alterations to the events, including cancellation.

Lost and FoundLost and Found will be located at the Volunteer check in tent which will be located near the bike mount line. After 2:00 p.m., Lost and Found will be moved to the Olympic transition bike out.

Sarah HaskinsThe overall winner of the 2011 Race to the Toyota Cup Series, Sarah has started 2012 with wins at Nautica South Beach and St. Anthony’s. Her 2011 results included eight 1st place finishes, capping her season with a gold medal at the Pan American Games. Member of Team USA, 2008 US Olympic Team member, Sarah is a favorite to make the US Team in 2012. She lives in Colorado Springs with husband Nathan.

Andy PottsStarted 2012 with a 1st place at Oceanside 70.3 and followed up with a win over Lance at St. Croix 70.3. In 2011 Andy was the winner of the Race to the Toyota Cup Series, winning at the CapTexTri and the Philadelphia Tri. Other 2011 highlights included 1st place at Oceanside, 1st place at Florida 70.3, 1st place at Escape from Alcatraz, and 1st swimmer by a big margin at the Ironman World Championships. 2004 US Olympic Team member, 2008 USAT Triathlete of the Year and 2007 Pan Am Games gold medalist. He lives in Colorado Springs with wife Lisa and son Boston.

Annabel Luxford2nd place at Nautica South Beach, 4th at St. Anthony’s, and 3rd at the 2011 Life Time U.S. Open. An Australian triathlete, who now races non drafting events in the USA after competing for a decade on the International Triathlon Union circuit. Besides a full racing schedule, Annabel is also studying for her law degree.

Cameron Dye2012 results 1st place Rev3 Costa Rica, 4th place Nautica South Beach and 2nd at Rev3 Knoxville. Now entering his sixth year as a professional Cameron has become one of the top swim/bike athletes in the world. This will be his third time racing at the CapTexTri. In 2011 some of his most notable results included 1st place Nautica South Beach, 1st place at the LA Triathlon, 3rd place at CapTex, and 3rd place at the US Open. He currently lives in Boulder, CO with his wife Natalie and their new baby Liam

Alicia KayeFinished 2nd overall in the 2011 Race to the Toyota Cup Triathlon Series final stand-ings and 2nd place at the 2011 CapTexTri, she has started 2012 with a 2nd place at the Nautica South Beach Tri, and a 2nd place at St. Anthony’s and setting the bike course record in the process. Paratriathlete Bios

Melissa Stockwell2 time Paratriathlon World Champion and 2010 and 2011 USA Triathlon Paratriath-lete of the year. Melissa lost her leg in 2004 while serving in Iraq as a 2nd Lieuten-ant with the US Army’s 1st Cavalry Division. She spent a year at Walter Reed Army Medical Center undergoing multiple surgeries and rehabilitation. One year, one week and one leg later, Melissa was medically retired from the Army with a purple heart and a bronze star. Melissa was a member of the 2008 US Paralympic Team compet-ing in swimming in Beijing. Melissa lives in Chicago and is a certified Prosthetist. She is also a level 1 certified triathlon coach and a co-founder of the Chicago based dare2tri Paratrathlon.

Patty CollinsLt. Colonel 21 year veteran with the U.S. Army currently stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas. Completed her first Triathlon in 1989, the Bud Light Series (prior to being of legal age to consume alcohol), and has completed every distance from Sprint through IM. Her favorite Tri is the CapTex and the Great Floridian where she still holds the course record for military women. Ten months after being struck by an automobile while bicycling to work in 2006, she elected to have her leg amputated below the knee in the hopes of returning to her previous active lifestyle. Since then she has returned to military free fall status, deployed to Afghanistan, completed two 70.3 half Iron-man Triathlons, and spent three days mountain biking with the 43rd President of the United States, George W Bush. She is the 2011 US National Para-cycling champion in the Individual Time Trial and Road Race and will compete for a spot on the US Paralympic Team later this summer in Augusta, GA. She also races with the Austin Flyers Women’s Racing Team.

Patty WalshDiagnosed with a severe pediatric brain tumor, she became blind at age five due to complications of surgery. She has raced in over 12 marathons and ultra-marathons. When a friend first mentioned triathlons to her two years ago, she immediately signed up for the Ironman, before even owning a bike! Last year, she set the world record for blind athletes at Ironman Texas, blowing away previous female and male records by over 50 minutes. Patty is the defending USAT Paratriathlon National Champion and the bronze medal winner at the 2011 Triathlon World Championship.

Michael JohnstonParachute Rigger Third Class with the Navy Reserves in San Diego. Shortly after returning from first deployment with the Navy in 2003, PR3 Johnston lost his left leg in a motorcycle accident that occurred just three miles from the front gate of NAS Oceana. He petitioned to remain in the Navy and after almost a year of intense physical therapy he was able to demonstrate to a Navy medical board that he was “fit for duty” and was granted his request to remain on active duty. Mike races for the Challenged Athletes Foundation and finished 2nd at the 2011 Paratriathlon National Championship and 4th at the 2011 Paratriathlon World Championship.

The 10 Most Commonly Violated Rules In Triathlon

2. Chin Straps: Chin straps must be buckled at all times when on a bicycle. DO NOT unbuckle your chin strap unless you are off your bicycle. Penalty: Disqualification on the course; Variable time penalty in transition area only.

3. Outside Assistance: No assistance other than that offered by race and medical officials may be used. Triathlons and duathlons are individual tests of fitness. Penalty: Variable time penalty

4. Transition Area: Equipment must be placed in the properly designated and individually assigned bike corral. The wheel of the bicycle must be down on the side of the assigned space. All participants must return their bicycles to an upright position in their designated bicycle corral. No person shall interfere with another participant’s equipment or impede the progress of another participant. All bar ends must be solidly plugged. No participant shall bring ANY glass containers into the transition area. Penalty: Variable time penalty.

5. Drafting: Keep at least three bike lengths of clear space between you and the cyclist in front. If you move into the zone, you must pass within 15 seconds. POSITION-keep to the right hand side of the lane of travel unless passing. Penalty: Variable time penalty.

6. Blocking: Riding on the left side of the lane without passing anyone and interfering with other cyclists attempting to pass. Overtaken—once passed, you must immediately exit the draft zone from the rear, before attempting to pass again. Penalty: Variable time penalty

7. Course Cutting: All competitors are required to follow the course and to stay within all coned lanes. Cutting the course is an obvious violation and going outside the course is a safety issue. Cyclists shall not cross a solid yellow center line for any reason. Cyclists must obey all applicable traffic laws at all times. Penalty: Referee’s discretion

8. Unsportsmanlike Conduct: Foul, harsh, argumentative or abusive language or other unsportsmanlike conduct directed at race officials, USA Triathlon officials, volunteers, spectators or fellow athletes is forbidden. Penalty: Disqualification

9. Headphones: Headphones, headsets, walkmans, ipods, mp3 players, or personal audio devices, etc. are not to be carried or worn at any time during the race. Penalty: Variable time penalty

10. Race Number: All athletes are required to wear race numbers at all times during the run. Numbers must face the front and be clearly visible at all times. Numbers may not be cut/folded or altered in any way. DON’T transfer your number to any other athlete or take a number from an athlete that is not competing. Penalty: Variable time penalty.

Where can we park? Public parking is available throughout downtown Austin. Specific parking lots open to CapTexTri athletes and spectators are (also refer to parking map): The Palmer Events Center parking garage, 900 Barton Springs Rd. One Texas Center, 505 Barton Springs Rd. Texas DOT, 200 E. Riverside Dr.

Are friends and/or family allowed to accompany the athlete at the race? Friends and/or family are welcome to join the athletes at the race, though there are some “athletes only” areas such as the transition area, behind the finish line, the post race food area, and anywhere on the actual race course. Once the ath-letes finish the race, friends and/or family can meet them as they leave the finish chute.

Will there be food and/or refreshments at the race? Athletes will have numerous choices for re-hydration and recovery fluids along with assorted fruit, snacks, and food once they finish. There will also be ven-dors who will be doing sampling and sales to the public.

How can family and/or friends meet up with an athlete after the race? The best plan is to establish a post race meeting spot and have a reasonable estimate of what time the athlete is expected to finish his/her race. The announcers will be calling out the athletes’ names as they finish but it is not a guaranty that all athletes will be announced.

What if an athlete has trouble during the race? If an athlete experiences problems or an emergency dur-ing the race, race officials will attempt to contact the person listed as the athlete’s emergency contact. It is very important that the person listed as the emergency contact is available via the phone number provided by the athlete.

Where is the Medical Area? The Medical tent is located to the west of the finish line (this is a secured area). There will be another medical station set up near the swim finish, and medical personnel will be located at each of the course aid stations.

Where are the best spectator viewing points? Swim start and finish can be viewed from the hike and bike trail. The 1st Street bridge is a great place to watch the swim and the bike. The ‘arena’ at 1st Street and Riverside has great viewing of the bike turn-around and the run course. The bike and run courses can be viewed from a number of locations, Cesar Chavez and Congress Ave being one. And, of course, the finish line area.
