Round 11 - Budapest I Introduction

It’s finally happening. The 2012 Formula 1 World Championship is settling into a pattern, and the cream is rising to the top.

Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren - the category’s heavy hitters over the last three seasons - have managed to extract themselves from the squabbling pack and assert some authority.

The German Grand Prix provided great evidence of this, with Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button separated by as little as 2.5s heading into the final stint, while the best of the rest was more than 15s further adrift.

The midpack fight between the Lotus, Mercedes, Force India, Sauber and Williams entries was just as intense as it has been all season, but the top three were long gone.

The three squads in question, albeit to a lesser extent for McLaren, now seemingly understand the fickle Pirelli tyres to the point that they can get them working in a broad range of track conditions and temperatures.

Their drivers, particularly Fernando Alonso, Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, appear set to fight out the title, with the unrelenting aerodynamic development race seen through recent seasons likely to again play a big role in its outcome.

While any of the five midpack teams can threaten on their day, situations such as that seen at the Chinese Grand Prix, where the Red Bulls, Ferraris and McLarens fell in a grip-less heap while Mercedes and Lotus stormed to a one-two finish, look unlikely to be repeated.

Let’s see if the Hungaroring, and potentially some more questionable European summer weather, can prove all of the theories wrong this weekend...

ontroversy reigned following last weekend’s German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, with two-time

defending World Champion Sebastian Vettel at the centre of two debates on driving conduct.

At the eye of the storm was a move from the German on Jenson Button that saw the Red Bull driver steal second place from his McLaren rival on the penultimate lap.

Vettel took to the outside of Button at the Turn 6 hairpin, completing the pass by using the tarmac run-off area on the exit. Although Button appeared to have left little room for Vettel to remain on the track, the FIA stewards didn’t take too kindly to the local hero not using the circuit “at all times”, and subsequently dropped him from

second to fifth in the final results via of a 20 second post-race penalty.

Naturally, the two parties involved had differing views of the matter, with Vettel saying he simply ran off the road trying to avoid an accident, and Button of the opinion that enough space had been left to accommodate the RB8.

While the decision of the FIA stewards was not without precedent (Fernando Alonso was handed a drive-through for a similar crime at the 2010 British Grand Prix), a lack of action over a move in this year’s Bahrain Grand Prix ensured the Vettel/Button incident would be a cause for some debate.

an aggressively blocking Nico Rosberg on the run to Turn 4. The stewards deemed that Hamilton had in fact completed the pass in the braking area, and had no case to answer about using the track verge on the straight.

The Hamilton/Rosberg incident contributed greatly to a revision of the driving conduct guidelines that was communicated to teams prior to this month’s British Grand Prix.

The FIA’s clarified stance on blocking, allowing a driver to swing from one side of the track to the other so long as no part of the following car’s front-wing was alongside the rear wheels, emerged on the eve of the Silverstone weekend.

A simultaneous clarification of the regulations regarding respecting track limits, however, was not leaked to the media until after last weekend’s race. Importantly, the article sent from race director Charlie Whiting to the teams placed an increased emphasis on the delicacy of track limit debates.

“Any driver leaving the track, (i.e. no part of his car remains in contact with the track in accordance with the current regulations), may rejoin the track but without gaining an advantage,” it read in part.

“Whilst the relevant regulation stated that a driver may gain no advantage at all by leaving the track, we feel the stewards should be encouraged to use their discretion in cases where it is not entirely clear whether or not a driver has gained any direct or immediate advantage.”

On that basis, it seems Vettel should not have been surprised to have his 40th career podium removed in such inglorious circumstances after the German Grand Prix.

What undoubtedly did surprise Vettel in Hockenheim, however, was a separate issue involving Lewis Hamilton. The Briton’s decision to pass the second-placed Vettel while running a lap down clearly incensed the German, who promptly gesticulated wildly at his rival, before labelling the move “stupid” post-race.

While even Red Bull Racing’s own team principal Christian Horner later admitted that Hamilton’s actions weren’t in breach of any formal regulations, it raised an undoubtedly awkward issue that will undoubtedly be seen again in this modern era of large speed differentials between new and old tyres. In this instance, the fact that the move clearly contributed to Button leap-frogging Vettel at the impending second pitstops clearly added fuel to the fire.

At the very least, the driving conduct controversies at the front of the field in Germany have provided some respite for Pastor Maldonado, who has become increasingly under fire this season for his ‘thug-like’ race craft. Sergio Perez spoke out about the Venezualen following contact in the British Grand Prix, for which Maldonado was fined 10,000 euro and given an official reprimand.

With the tight confines of Budapest’s Hungaroring lying ahead this weekend, it seems all drivers will need to ensure they are on their best behaviour.

approaching turn 1Heavy braking from almost 300km/h on the main straight to under 100km/h at the first turn creates the most likely overtaking opportunity on the circuit.

rear wingRear wing configuration will run to maximum downforce levels thanks to the relatively low speed nature of the circuit.

BrakesThe lap begins with relatively heavy braking heading into turn one, which comes at the end of a comparatively long straight. By contrast, demands on the brakes from Turn 4 to Turn 10 are very light. The drivers therefore need good confidence in their braking systems to be right on the mark when needed, as they are used heavily relatively seldom over the course of a lap.

SuspensionThe layout of the Hungaroring circuit promotes understeer, with a strong front end required to prevent this. The drivers will also ride the kerbs a lot at throughout the course of a lap here, so a soft front end is useful in that respect.

tyresThe medium and soft Pirelli P-Zeros are allocated. The circuit surface and layout

is relatively kind to the tyres however the high temperatures frequently experienced can cause the rubber other issues, such as blistering.

front wingAs with the rear, maximum downforce is required from the front wing in line with the circuit layout and also to help counter understeer. We will run a new specification of front wing to assist with this.

engineWe’re looking for non-peaky power delivery here to facilitate traction out of the low-speed corners and provide good all round driveability. The engine needs to be mapped in such a way as to deliver sharp bursts of power rather than sustained application of throttle. Ambienttemperatures are particularly high in Budapest, so the engine must perform efficiently through the lower rev range while offering efficient cooling solutions.

turn 2The track runs quite noticeably downhill into turn two. With high potential for drivers to outbrake themselves here, they will need to keep their wits about them.

turns 3 & 4Moderate braking from 240km/h to 150km/h at Turn 5 follows the slight kink of Turn 4; a tricky series of corners taken at medium / high speed.

turns 4-11Turns 4 to 11 very much lead into each other so there’s little braking here and no room for error, as a small mistake at any stage can have a big effect on overall lap time. The drivers need a well-balanced car with good change of direction capabilities through this section.

turn 13The second slowest corner on the circuit, Turn 13 is a tight left hander taken at around 100km/h before launching the car into the final turn…

turns 14A good exit from the third gear turn fourteen is crucial, as it leads on to the circuits’only straight and subsequently into turn one; the best overtaking opportunity around the lap.

Webber respectively wasn’t quite what the team had hoped for from the German Grand Prix. Both results of course were influenced by penalties (Vettel’s post-race and Webber’s post-qualifying), but all in all the RB8 failed to dazzle on Sunday at Hockenheim.

The team will more than likely be required to make alterations to its engine mapping for Hungary following the German GP controversy, while the KERS problem Vettel suffered last weekend is also an unknown factor.

Both drivers should be well in the fight for the win here, but it certainly won’t be easy.

the Bagman’S SaY...Lewis Hamilton’s early-race puncture aside, it was

a much improved McLaren outfit that turned up in Germany. Jenson Button’s confidence was given a much needed boost in Hockenheim, where the Briton achieved his best grid slot in seven races and his first podium in eight.

The team is promising even more updates to come this weekend, while the circuit is one on which Button triumphed brilliantly last year.

The team’s pitstops continue to fluctuate between race breaking and record breaking, with the performances in Hockenheim having proven to be in the latter category.

Both drivers will be eyeing a return to the top step here in what promises to be a tight fight with Fernando Alonso and Red Bull.

concede that the Italian team heads to Hungary with a strong chance of a third successive victory.

Fernando Alonso again proved his brilliance in Germany, taking pole in tricky conditions before holding off the advances of both Sebastian Vettel and Jenson Button in the race.

The relative speed of the top three cars during the middle stint in Hockenheim indicates that the F2012 may still lack the outright speed of its rivals, but it would be unfair to say that Alonso is carrying the team completely. The team’s decision to take a new set of wets halfway through Q3 arguably set-up the win.

disappointing one for Mercedes, which has seemingly slipped behind the Red Bull, Ferrari, Lotus and McLaren quartet in recent races.

By its own admission , the Brackley-based Silver Arrows need to find around 0.5s per lap of pure performance in order to return to its winning ways of earlier in the season, while managing tyre temperatures during the races continues to be its biggest cause for concern.

Michael Schumacher’s third place grid slot at Hockenheim was a commendable performance, but even a repeat of such qualifying heroics this weekend is again unlikely to yield a podium finish.

the Bagman’S SaY...It was an all too familiar story for Lotus in

Germany. Kimi Raikkonen took the team’s sixth podium finish of the season (a tally that compares favourably with McLaren’s seven podiums, Ferrari’s six and Red Bull’s five), but the E20’s race pace indicated that the result could have been so much more had it not been for a poor qualifying performance.

Team-mate Romain Grosjean, meanwhile, has returned to his ragged ways of the opening events of the season in recent races and is no doubt under pressure to reign in his enthusiasm.

Both drivers will most likely qualify behind the Alonso/Red Bull/McLaren quintet on Saturday before looking to move as deep into the top five as possible in the race.

the Bagman’S SaY...Nico Hulkenberg made the most of his impressive

second-row starting slot to fight at the pointy end of the field in the opening stages of his home Grand Prix. Like the factory entries, however, his Mercedes-powered Force India struggled to keep a top 10 level of pace as the stints wore on, and was eventually overhauled by the likes of Kimi Raikkonen’s Lotus and the two Sauber entries.

Considering the lack of consistent speed, a ninth place finish was a good result.

Paul di Resta has proven himself to be at least the equal of his team-mate, but both drivers may struggle to add to their tallies this weekend.

Kobayashi and Sergio Perez were up to their usual trick of pushing through from poor qualifying positions last Sunday afternoon.

Fourth and sixth place finishes respectively provided the team with its biggest points haul of the season so far, catapulting it further away from the sixth placed Williams and seventh placed Force India in the Constructors Championship.

Kobayashi’s result in particular was set-up by the C31’s ability to look after its tyres on full tanks early in the race - enabling a long first stint before two charging runs to the flag.

headlines than usual in Hockenheim, with news that its long-time technical director, the highly regarded Giorgio Ascanelli, has departed the team.

While the official line is that the Italian is currently “on holidays”, he is not expected to return to the struggling outfit.

Things went as per usual for Toro Rosso in Germany regardless, with Jean-Eric Vergne’s weekend soured by again failing to get out of Q1. Team-mate Daniel Ricciardo used to wet conditions to get within a fraction of Q3, but never really looked a chance of points in the race anyway.

the Bagman’S SaY...Williams’ return to form hailed following Pastor

Maldonado’s Spanish Grand Prix victory in May has sadly petered out. The team has scored just four points in the five races held since Barcelona, and all of those have come from Maldonado’s team-mate Bruno Senna.

The team can at least cling to the promise shown by Maldonado on Saturday afternoons, with the Venezuelan having qualified in the top eight for four of those last five races. His Sunday afternoon in Hockenheim, however, was said to be compromised by running over a piece of debris in the early going. Ironically, one of the parties involved in the early parts-shedding had been Senna, who was forced to pit on the very first lap with a puncture.

the Bagman’S SaY...Even what Heikki Kovalainen described as “a

perfect lap” could not drag the Caterham any higher than 19th in qualifying at Hockenheim as the team continues to chase the tail of the highly competitive midfield.

Vitaly Petrov started two places further back but managed to overtake his team-mate on the opening lap, setting up a rare duel between the pair. With Kovalainen’s race soon hampered by chronic understeer, Petrov was able to finish ahead of the Finn for the five time in 10 races.

For Kovalainen, the Hungaroring - the scene of his one and only Grand Prix victory back in 2008 - provides an opportunity to re-establish his dominance within the team.

surpremecy over team-mate Narain Karthikeyan to 10-0 in Hockenheim.

The Indian’s race performance, however, was one of his best of the season to date, taking the chequered flag less than six seconds adrift of the Spaniard.

A strong showing in qualifying at Monaco earlier in the season has De la Rosa optimistic of qualifying among the Marussias this weekend at the similarly tight Hungaroring.

to watch for the future. The Frenchman out-performed his highly experience team-mate Timo Glock in both qualifying and the race at Hockenheim.

Glock complained bitterly of the balance of his Marussia throughout the weekend, while a differential problem emerged during the race, further extending the gap between himself and Pic.

The battle between this pair will again be one to watch this weekend at the Hungaroring.
