A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

t has been a couple of months since I had the opportunity to write my “column” in our “Leading Edge” and so much has been happening in our community and our Chamber that pinpointing specifics will be difficult. In the heat of the summer I know many of us think that meetings, appointments, retreats and

workshops just do not spark the same interest that they do in the fall. We get bogged down in wanting to be outdoors, or be on vacation -- and that is understandable. But this is definitely not the case in Butler County.

I encourage all of you to take a drive or walk down Main Street, City of Butler, and challenge you to not believe in the power of collective business efforts. Scaffolds abound as numerous grand historic buildings get a new lease on life. As a food lover, I appreciate the new eating establishments that compliment the large selection of existing restaurants. After you take in this flurry of activity, head down to the newly christened “West New Castle Street Plaza” or the Farmer’s Market and stroll the vendors in this beautifully renovated facility.

Surveys conducted during the past four years overwhelmingly indicated that the residents of Butler County believe that our downtown is a number one priority for overall image and economic strength. As the 40,000 people on the streets for Cruise-A-Palooza, the happy partygoers at the Centre City Jams or the fact that you cannot find a place to sit in Diamond Park when the weather is accommodating (Butler Symphony Summer Concerts) can attest, Main Street Butler is “back”.

We wait with anticipation and excitement for the 2nd Annual Bantam Jeep Festival this month, and thank the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau for their tenacity and organizational skills for what will again prove to be an overwhelming success. Proof once again that Butler County is well into a successful cycle of activity and economic growth.

It is said that at some rare periods in time, the stars align and good things happen. I feel that we are fortunate to have all the players on the Butler County Team on board with one like-minded purpose – mutual success. Our Chamber’s own “Community and Business Leadership Group” represents businesses and organizations from Slippery Rock to Cranberry Township. Through their efforts and the cooperation of local, state and federal legislators we have been able to combine resources and develop strategies to advance our mutual causes. We are blessed to have the right “stars” in planning, economic development, community development, government, education and health care, willing to align and willing to shine together.

We will soon be moving into what I call the “Back to School” frame of mind, as September is around the corner and we are anxious to get down to business. Let’s not forget that the numerous alternative possibilities for doing business amongst our Chamber Members will constantly exist. Just read through this newsletter to see the many opportunities we are presenting.

But August is still summertime, and we will begin the month enthusiastically with our Annual Ladies’ Golf Outing at Conley Resort. Our Fourth Annual Mixer in Foxburg will offer you the opportunity to meet and network with members from the Armstrong County, Grove City, Clarion, Venango and Franklin Area Chambers of Commerce along with the Butler County Chamber members, and a week later we can network in Grove City with the Grove City Area, New Wilmington Area, Greenville Area, Mercer Area, Shenango Valley, Lawrence County and THE CHAMBER, Inc. along with the Slippery Rock Business Association at another “expand your business base” joint event. At the end of the month we will once again network at SiBA Restaurant as C.W.Howard Insurance Agency, Moses Jewelers and Consolidated Communications host an after-hours event.

September will be the time to recognize business achievements at our “Celebrate Business Dinner” where the William A. Morgan Jr. Entrepreneur of the Year Awards will be announced. We will be joining the Pittsburgh Social Exchange in September for a “Send off to Summer” Mixer at Jergel’s Rhythm House and are partnering with First United Methodist Church to offer an EntreLeadership Workshop. Together we continue to advance the causes of business and community in Butler County while providing our membership maximum exposure to regional efforts, legislation and networking opportunities. Doing business the best way possible, with enthusiasm, achieving great results and having fun.

D ave Ramsey founded the Lampo Group in 1992 to provide financial counseling to people of all income levels. He began his company on a card table in his living room after learning his own

hard lessons about finance by hitting rock bottom in his real estate business. Today, the successful Lampo Group has 300+ employees and offers a variety of services. As he built his company, he started offering seminars to his own employees to develop them to help him lead. Word got out about how valuable the seminars were and employees’ friends, family and acquaintances began attending. He expanded the seminars to the weeklong EntreLeadership Master Series, and then to his book entitled EntreLeadership.

He is now offering the EntreLeadership National Simulcast that First United Methodist Church will be hosting along with the Butler County Chamber of Commerce on Friday, September 21st from 10am – 5pm at the Crossfire Campus, 1802 North Main St. EXT., Butler, PA 16001. Refreshments and lunch will be served courtesy of Concordia Visiting Nurses and D’Anthony’s Pizzeria. Reservations are necessary and can be made by contacting Lisa Gill at First United Methodist Church, 200 E. North St., Butler, PA 16001, 724.283.6160, [email protected]

First United Methodist Church has offered prior Dave Ramsey services such as his Financial Peace curriculum and his Dave Ramsey Live Event Total Money Makeover Simulcast. The EntreLeadership National Simulcast will be a great resource in developing businesses to provide leadership in their given areas. First United Methodist Church supports business, nonprofit, government and religious organizations in Butler and is pleased with this partnership.

Because First Church is hosting the simulcast, people who attend can purchase tickets for the event for only $29 as opposed to the $39 charged by ordering directly from Dave Ramsey’s website. All attendees will receive a workbook that aligns with the simulcast along with refreshments and lunch. To gain more information about Dave Ramsey and the simulcast, you can visit http://www.daveramsey.com/entreleadership.

Beat the High Cost of Electricity this Summer with Energy Efficiency

Incentive Programsest Penn Power is helping businesses, governments, non-profits and schools purchase energy saving equipment with a number of cash incentives. These programs deliver robust incentives to significantly reduce the purchase costs on common energy-using

equipment, from lighting to motors. This could mean thou-sands of extra dollars to you, so don’t delay. Funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so apply today. Available programs include:

The Non-Standard Lighting Incentives for Business pro-gram provides incentives for various energy saving light-ing measures, including high-efficiency linear fluorescents, compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), Light Emitting Di-odes (LED) exit signs and lighting controls. The Motors and Drives Incentives for Business program provides cash in-centives for installation of high-efficiency motors and vari-able speed drives (VSDs). The HVAC Incentives for Business program offers incentives for installation of high-efficiency heat pumps, chillers, unitary/split systems and packaged terminal systems.

The Specialty Equipment Incentives for Business pro-gram offers incentives for high-efficiency refrigera-tion, food service and miscellaneous equipment. The Cus-tom Incentives for Business program supports projects not fitting into other programs.

Past projects are still eligible for incentives! Did you in-stall energy efficient equipment on or after October 28, 2009, without applying for PA Act 129 incentives? West Penn Power is still offering cash incentives to eligible* cus-tomers who have purchased and installed energy efficient equipment on or after October 28, 2009. Don’t miss this great opportunity to receive incentives for work already completed. Call them at 866.554.4430, or visit the For Your Business section of www.energysavePA.com for applications and more information.

New Business Designation in Cranberry Offers Benefits for Being Sustainable

B usinesses in Cranberry Township now have a new incentive to be sustainable. The Township government is working with Sustainable Pittsburgh to develop a Sustainable Business Designation for those companies

that are working to contribute to a Healthy Cranberry. This program is an initiative of the Township’s Business Hub, and is the result of a recommendation in the Township’s Sustainability Assessment, which was completed as part of The Cranberry Plan. The program encourages the Township’s sustainability principles, as set forth in The Cranberry Plan – Be Distinctive, Be Prosperous, Be Engaged, Be Healthy, and Be Committed. Sustainable Pittsburgh has already rolled out this program in the city of Pittsburgh and other surrounding areas, and more than 100 businesses in those areas have received the designation. Businesses in Cranberry have the opportunity to apply for the designation – and best of all, the process is simple and free.

How Does it Work? Company representatives simply visit the Cranberry Township website and complete the on-line checklist. To achieve the designation, a company must either check off one criterion in each category, or check off an overall total of 15 criteria. Once the checklist is submitted, the

business will be informed if they have achieved the designation. All designated businesses will receive promotional materials, a certificate, and recognition from Cranberry Township and Sustainable Pittsburgh. Additionally, businesses will have the opportunity to participate in future educational workshops. Any businesses that do not achieve designation on their first try will receive assistance in working towards the distinction.

To learn more visit www.cranberrytownship.org/sustainablebusiness and complete the checklist today.

About the Business Hub – The Cranberry Township Business Hub is the local point of contact for all local businesses. We are available to assist current and prospective business owners to identify local business resources, share information, easily progress through Township processes, and find the necessary data to make the best business decisions. Learn more at www.cranberrybusinesshub.org.

About Sustainable Pittsburgh – Sustainable Pittsburgh affects decision-making in the Pittsburgh region to integrate economic prosperity, social equity, and environmental quality bringing sustainable solutions to communities and businesses. Learn more at www.sustainablepittsburgh.org.

I n 2003, the Butler County Chamber began recognizing local organizations that impact the community through a cooperative project or initiative, with the presentation of the Community Champion Award. 4-Most Group, Inc.

Architects has designed and sponsored the award certificate since its inception. This year’s Community Champion Award luncheon was sponsored by ARMSTRONG and presented in cooperation with the Butler County Tourism and Convention Bureau.

Main Street lighting, flowers and signage earned the Butler Shade Tree Commission the first inaugural award. Butler AM Rotary Club received well-deserved honors for the handicapped playground at Alameda Park. Slippery Rock Area Development Association followed the next year for the Main Street renovations in Slippery Rock. We were pleased to recognize the Parking Authority of Butler for the parking deck and surface lot improvements in downtown Butler.

Butler Downtown had worked for numerous years to successfully establish the “Main Street” Program and was deservedly recognized followed in 2008 by the Community Health Clinic of Butler County, for establishing a visionary facility for health care. Historic Pullman Park Commission received the 2009 recognition, 2010 recognized the Historic Strand Theater Committee in Zelienople for their community preservation efforts and the Butler-Freeport Trail in 2011.

The Board of Directors and Past President’s Advisory Council of the Butler County Chamber, along with the Butler County Tourism & Convention Bureau, were pleased to honor The Little Theatre Group of Butler as the 10th Butler County Chamber of Commerce Community Champion Award recipient at a luncheon at the Little Theatre on July 18. Currently planning for the 71st season of great entertainment, the Butler Little Theatre has been an anchor for our cultural community, offering live shows, classes for children and involvement in numerous events and activities. We congratulate them for their efforts and add The Little Theatre Group of Butler to the deserving list of Community Champions.

Beverages courtesy of North Country Brewing Company were the perfect compliment to a night at the ballgame, and we thank Bob McCafferty for his generosity. Pyrotechnico provided a spectacular fireworks display to top off the evening, sponsored by ARMSTRONG. The Butler County and Grove City Area Chambers along with the Slippery Rock Business Association thank our other sponsors, Slippery Rock University, C.W.
