Varsity Blues alumna and Toronto native, Kristine Drakich has been the head coach of the women’s volleyball program since 1989-90. Under her direction, the Blues qualifi ed for 21 consecutive OUA fi nal four appearances from 1990-2010, winning the OUA championship banner seven times.

Kristine is a highly qualifi ed NCCP coach with a Level 4 certifi cation indoors and a Level 3 certifi cation on the beach. She has coached internationally in both indoor and beach, having coached team Canada at the 19U world beach volleyball championships in 2006 and 2007, and the national junior indoor team at the Norceca championship in 2002. Kristine has also coached the provincial indoor and beach teams at the Canada Games.

Named Ontario Volleyball and 3M National High Performance coach of the year as well as OUA coach of the year six times, Kristine has received a Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women in Sport (CAAWS) “Breakthrough Award - Individual Category” for her leadership in the area of women and sport.

A former captain and all-Canadian with the Varsity Blues, Kristine was a member of Canada’s national volleyball and beach volleyball teams and was a 2001 inductee into the University of Toronto’s Sports Hall of Fame. She has volunteered at almost every level of the sport, internationally and nationally with the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) and Volleyball Canada respectively. She is currently president of the Ontario Volleyball Association (OVA), and president of the Canadian women’s volleyball coaches association.

Wenli Pan joined the program in 2004-05 after playing international volleyball for the past 20 years.Since 1996, Pan has made play-ing volleyball a professional career in Japan and Italy. Prior to playing professionally, Pan was a member of the Chinese national volleyball team from 1986 to 1996 and helped China win the silver medal at the 1996 At-lanta Olympic Games and the bronze

medal at the 1995 World Cup. Pan has also been honoured with many individual awards including the “Best Blocker” award at the 1993 Grand Prix. Pan’s extensive experience, strong understanding of the game and love of volleyball make her a tremendous asset to the Varsity Blues women’s volleyball program.

Coaching Staff

A former OUA champion during her time with the Varsity Blues (1987-92), Laura Inward is a four-time Canadian champion and brings a wealth of knowledge from both the national and international stage. A participant at eight FIVB events, including two world championships (1997, 2000), Inward was a gold medalist at the 2005 and 2009 world masters championships and has

consistently ranked among the top-10 teams in Canada. She is a NCCP level 3 certifi ed beach volleyball coach and most recently headed the CAN1 women’s team at the 2009 under-21 world championships in Blackpool, England.Inward has coached Team Ontario to a Canada Games bronze medal and an under-21 gold medal in 2009.

Tine Lee joined the Blues in 2006-07.Tine has been helping to develop Ontario athletes as a member of the coaching staff for the Team Ontario 23U Program. Tine started coaching in 1981 with high school boys and girl’s volleyball and helped coach the Connex women’s program in the an-nual North American Chinese Invita-tional Volleyball Tournament series, winning 2 NACIVT Championships

and 4 Bronze medals over more than 20 years. Tine has also coached in the OVA club level in both the Youth and Adult Open divisions for many years. He coached at the Durham Attack Volleyball Club for 2 ½ years with the 17U and 18U girls.

Elodie enters her third year on the Varsity Blues bench. During her fi ve years at the University of Toronto, she was the OUA East division rookie of the year in 2001-02, a two-time OUA second team all-star and won the OUA East division award of merit in 2005-06.

Elodie was born in Mauritius and has competed for their national indoor

and beach volleyball teams, including at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

SEASON PREVIEW

Entering her 24th season as bench boss, Kristine Drakich is excited about this year’s squad.

“The strength, experience and energy of the returning players, along with the skill and enthusiasm of the new players has proven to be a good combination,” commented Drakich. “We seem to be starting where we left off after winning the bronze medal last season.”

With a 12-1 record in their competitive pre-season schedule, the Blues have started strong by demonstrating a will to win and a tremendous ability to adapt.

The experience on the beach this past summer has helped many of the Blues. Most have played during the summer months in various provincial and national competitions and the experience that both fourth-year outsider hitter Alexandra Hudson and third-year right side Charlotte Sider have gained from competing at a World beach championship will only benefi t the squad.

While these two players have gained great international experience, the Blues success this season will be dependant on the contribution of every player.

Twin sisters Shannon and Katrina Rossall enter their fi fth-and-fi nal year with the Blues. Shannon continues to be strong at the net in the middle, having been named an all-star in both of Toronto’s pre-season tournaments. She, along with Sarah Chapin, Bojana Radan and transfer student Leah Sherriff will provide solid net play in 2012-13.

Katrina excelled in her switch to libero last season and will be relied on to create a strong backcourt presence on the fl oor. She will work with second-year Angie Bellehumeur and fi rst-year libero Kate Lonergan throughout the season to make the Blues defensive positions as strong as possible.

Fourth-year setter Malena Rapaport will once again run the offence. Rapaport, who was selected as a member of Cana-da’s national B team, will be supported by third-year setter Julia Bellehumeur and rookie setter Madelyn Mandryk.

A 2012 OUA all-star, Sider returns to help lead the Blues. The Ottawa native topped U of T with 3.05 kills per set last sea-son. Sider along with third-year hitter Jennifer Neilson will ensure that the rightside position is very strong.

Hudson will once again bolster Toronto’s play at the net. She, along with Rebecca Crosier and 2012 OUA all-rookie team member Denise Wooding, will make a solid impact on the court. Rookie Caleigh Cruickshank will also bring great depth to the team’s outside hitting positions.

The Varsity Blues women’s volleyball team wrapped up their season winning the OUA bronze medal with a 3-0 victory over the RMC Paladins.

After a huge 3-0 win over the McMaster Marauders in the quarter-fi nals, the women moved on to face the Queen’s Gaels in the OUA semifi nals. The Blues overcame a two-set defi cit to force a fi fth-and-deciding set, but would eventually fall 3-2.

The team fi nished the regular season tied with McMaster for fourth place with identical 11-7 records, but fi nished fi fth due to their head-to-head record.

Charlotte Sider and Denise Wooding were recognized with OUA honours. Sider led the Blues, averaging 3.05 kills and 3.6 points per set during the regular season. The fi rst team OUA all-star also ranked second on the team in total digs and blocks.

First-year left side hitter Wooding was named a member of the OUA all-rookie team after recording 1.63 kills and 3.18 digs per set this season.

RECORD MANUAL

As part of the Varsity Blues family, women’s volleyball is one of 44 men’s and women’s teams in 26 sports offered by U of T. The breadth of the Varsity Blues experience and legacy are unmatched at a Canadian university.

The University of Toronto’s women’s volleyball program has achieved enviable success. It is a nationally competitive program that has captured seven Ontario championship titles. Blues volleyball has also been the most consistently successful program as the Blues qualifi ed for 21 consecutive OUA fi nal four appearances from 1990-2010,

U of T is one of the only universities to integrate beach volleyball and volleyball training. Varsity Blues volleyball players have been very successful at the provincial, national and international beach volleyball levels - currently three former players, Sarah Pothaar, Rebecca Moskowitz and Asta Baltakys, are representing Canada on the World Tour. Since 1994, at least 13 Varsity Blues players have competed for Canada on the FIVB World Tour, at World Beach Championships, at the World University Beach Championships and at the Pan American Games.

The Varsity Blues volleyball program attracts talented athletes who are interested in learning and advancing their game. Many Varsity Blues players have been named to all-Ontario and all-Canadian teams and have represented Canada at international competitions in both indoor and beach volleyball.

The 1968-69 women’s volleyball team dominated university competition in eastern Canada. Undefeated in regular season play, the 1968-69 Blues continued their winning streak into the playoffs, earning the league championship and the Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Union (WIAU) title. Coached by Marjory Shedd, the team was a dynamic group of outstanding talent, including Lois Kennedy - who was also a member of Canada’s national team. Six of the Blues players competed on the provincial team that won gold at the fi rst Canada Games in 1967. Team members include: Jenny (Karstoff) Stoanka Allen, 1997 Hall of Fame inductee, Julia (Kucharachuk) Andruchiw, Jennifer (English) Fallis, Lida (Syrotynsky) Hoffmann, Lois Kennedy, Ruth (Unger) Morgan, Birgitte Nielsen-Worrall, Lynette (Bibby) Pasma, Luba (Olesnycky) Rabbel (captain), Lydia (Eliashevsky) Replansky, Mari Sagi, Jane (Guenther) Williams and Marjory Shedd (head coach).

The Varsity Blues coaching and support staff has a range of expertise that makes them among the best in the country. Head coach Kristine Drakich leads the women’s Varsity Blues volleyball program and ensures the quality of the staff. Kristine is a NCCP high performance coach who has been recognized for her coaching (indoor and beach volleyball) both provincially and nationally. She has over 10 years of international volleyball playing experience (fi ve years indoor and fi ve years beach volleyball).

A member of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame since 1970, Marjory Shedd, a recent inductee to the Varsity Blues Hall of Fame, coached at U of T for 28 years (1964-91) and guided the Blues to seven league gold medals in volleyball, plus fi ve Ontario gold medals and seven silver medals in badminton. Known as “Canada’s Lady of Badminton,” Marjory won 44 provincial and 24 national titles, including six consecutive triple crowns. She represented Canada in six Uber Cup competitions, including the fi rst International Women’s Uber Cup in 1956-57. She also played on national championships teams in both basketball and volleyball, and represented Canada in volleyball at the 1967 Pan-American Games.
