SEASON PREVIEW

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s basketball team had another successful season in 2010-2011 and despite the loss of key players such as Nicki Schutz and Erin McNeely, will look to once again be a powerhouse in the OUA East this year.

The No. 10 Blues open their regular season this Friday, November 11 as they host the Waterloo Warriors at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym at 6 p.m.

In honour of Remembrance Day, the Varsity Blues have deemed Friday ‘Heroes Night’ in honour of Canadian veterans across the country. A 30-piece cadet band will be on hand for the national anthem as well as a halftime performance.

The game will be streamed live on SSN Canada through varsityblues.ca. Advance tickets are on sale: click here or call 416-946-3811.

Veteran guard Sherri Pierce looks to take a commanding role in her fi nal year with the team. After racking up 227 points in 21 games and an impressive 53 assists, the Brampton, Ont., native and 2010-11 OUA all-star will be a key component of the Varsity Blues offence.

Pierce is joined by fellow veterans and team captains Joanna Medri and Megan Stoncius. Medri, a fi fth-year guard from Toronto, is a strong outside threat and ranked

second on the team last season with 43 steals. A native of Mississauga, Ont., Stoncius brings tenacity to the court and is a force to be reckoned with under the basket.

Toronto has a unique opportunity with only two rookies and one transfer student joining the program this season. Having a similar squad from last year helps when starting a new season as players are familiar with the playing style the team wants to adopt.

“It’s hugely different,” said Varsity Blues head coach Michèle Bélanger, now in her 33rd year as U of T’s bench boss. “We’re further ahead today than we were last year with this team because they’ve been around once before.”

Last year, the Varsity Blues had fi ve fi rst-year players on the team, with two - Jill Stratton and Julie Longauer (Whitby, Ont.) - seeing a lot of playing time.

A sophomore guard, Stratton will look to step into a leadership role on the court this season. The Etobicoke, Ont., native was named an OUA and CIS all-rookie last year after posting 192 points and 57 assists.

Longauer, along with fellow forwards Liane Bailey, Alicia Van Kampen and Amanda Lauzon, will also look to make an impact in 2011-12, while rookies Jenalle Vanhie and Jen Coffi n, as well as third-year transfer Kristy Chute look to crack the roster in 2011-12.

VARSITY BLUES \ \ \ \ \ \ \

RECORD MANUALAs part of the Varsity Blues family, women’s basketball is one of 44 men’s and women’s teams in 26 sports offered by U of T. The breadths of the Varsity Blues experience and legacy are unmatched at a Canadian university.

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues basketball team has made 17 trips to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Championship, including a berth in the 2011 national tournament. With one national title, two silver medals and two bronze medals to show for their efforts, the Varsity Blues are gunning for a trip

back to the CIS Championship in 2011-12.

U of T has collected the conference crown nine times, the second best in the OUA. The team has brought home the OUA title four times in the past 18 seasons.

Along with team accolades, Varsity Blues basketball also regularly attracts some of the top high school student-athletes both here in Ontario and across the country. Since 1985, 55 Varsity Blues have been named OUA all-stars and 18 have been named CIS all-Canadians. A number of Blues

players have spent time with the Canadian national team and Justine Ellison earned CIS Athlete of the Year honours in 1996.

On the sidelines, head coach Michèle Bélanger returns for her 33rd season behind the Varsity Blues bench. Her record speaks for itself - nine OUA championships, 17 CIS championship appearances and fi ve CIS top three fi nishes, including a national championship crown in 1986.

Varsity Blues women’s basketball is all about excellence on the court, in the classroom and in the community.
