MEET MEET THE THE COACHESCOACHES
Co-head coach Tina Bird enters her sixth season at the helm of the Boise State gymnastics team, working alongside co-head coach Neil Resnick to a 95-30 (.760) record in their fi ve years of heading up the Boise State program.
Most recently, the pair led the Broncos to a third-place fi nish at the 2012 South Central Region Championship in Fayetteville, Ark. From there, senior Amy Glass advanced to the NCAA National Championship to compete as an individual in the all-around. While at the national meet in Duluth, Ga., Glass was dubbed the 2012 American Athletic, Inc. (AAI) Award winner for the nation’s top gymnast.
In 2011 Bird and Resnick led their team to Western Athletic Conference regular season and championship titles, as well as a third-place fi nish at the 2011 NCAA North Central Regional. The pair led one of the best squads in program history, tying a school record team score of 197.050 on March 13 and fi nishing the season ranked 13th, the highest ever for Boise State. They went on to guide their team to a school record regional score of 196.400 three weeks later. The Broncos also earned fi ve additional all-time top-25 scores in school history and collected four program top-10 team scores on vault, as well as one on bars and one on fl oor. For the fi rst time under their leadership, Bird and Resnick produced two NCAA National individual qualifi ers in the same season in Amy Glass and Bekah Gher. Glass was the fi rst all-around qualifi er since 2005, while Gher became the fi rst Bronco ever to qualify on beam.
In 2010 Bird and Resnick guided their team to the fi rst-ever WAC regular season title, while also placing second at the post-season WAC Championship meet. The pair guided the Broncos to their third-straight NCAA Regional appearance where the team recorded the best team vault score at any 2010 regional championship meet in the nation. Their score of 49.575 not only led the nation that week, but also set a new Boise State school record on the event. The coaching duo also had their fi rst NCAA
national qualifi er while under their reins with Hannah Redmon competing on vault and fl oor at the national meet.
In 2009 Bird and Resnick steered the team to their second-straight WAC team championship as well as a berth to the NCAA Regionals. There the Broncos fi nished third, the best fi nish at the time by a Bronco team. The Broncos recorded four team scores that landed in the all-time top-25 team scores in school history. Along with leading the team to a very successful season, Bird, along with Resnick, garnered their second-straight WAC Co-Head Coach of the Year honor.
In her fi rst season as co-head coach Bird helped guide the Broncos to a 20-6 season including a WAC team championship as well as a fourth place NCAA South Central Region fi nish. Coaching the team to a NCAA fi nal season ranking of 23rd, Bird also garnered awards of her own, including the 2008 WAC Co-Coach of the Year and the West Region Co-Coach of the Year.
In 2007, after 18 years as an assistant coach with the Boise State gymnastics team, Bird took on a new role and was promoted to co-head coach alongside Resnick.
Originally from Milwaukie, Ore., she came to Boise State in 1985 as a freshman on the gymnastics team under former Bronco coach Jackie Carringer. She was a scholarship athlete for Boise State from 1986-89.
As a result of her creative dance and unique tumbling, Tina held the school record on fl oor for four years. She serves as the squad’s chief choreographer, edits music for fl oor routines and develops the team’s conditioning program along with the Bronco strength coaches. Bird also serves as the team’s beam coach and is in charge of putting together Bronco beam workouts.
Bird was selected to coach at the NCAA Youth Education through Sports (YES) clinic in conjunction with the NCAA National Championships in 1998 and 2001. She
served as the site coordinator for the YES clinic in April of 2000 when Boise State hosted the NCAA National Championships. Bird also served on the USA Gymnastics Idaho State Board in 2005.
A 1990 graduate of Boise State with a degree in physical education, she was honored as an All-American Scholar Athlete by the national coaches’ association.
Tina coached at Bronco Elite Gymnastics Academy from 1996-2005, and was the site coordinator for the Special Olympics Summer Gymnastics Games in 1991. She is currently serving as the Bronco Gymnastics Express program director on Boise State’s campus. Her family owns Eddie’s Restaurant and Eddie’s Diner in Boise. She has raced in a number of marathons and half-marathons.
She and her husband, Eddie, have a son Travis (20), and two daughters, McKenna (17) and Julianne (12).

Amy Glass Earns AAI Award as Nation’s Top Gymnast
(April 19, 2012) -- Boise State redshirt senior Amy Glass was named the 2012 American Athletic, Inc. (AAI) Award winner on April 19 at the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championship awards banquet held at the Gwinnett Center.
Glass became the fi rst Bronco to ever earn the honor, considered the sport’s equivalent to the Heisman Award. The award is given annually to the top senior student-athlete in NCAA Division I women’s gymnastics by a vote of the sports’ head coaches from around the country.
“It was a pleasant surprise,” exclaimed Glass. “I am thrilled to know that the NCAA coaches think so highly of me.”
The Vacaville, Calif., native was one of six fi nalists for the award, all who were recognized at the banquet. She won the award ahead of a talented fi eld of gymnasts, including Kat Ding of Georgia, Megan Ferguson of Oklahoma, Leslie Mak of Oregon State, Jaime Pisani of Arkansas and Geralen Stack-Eaton of Alabama.
“We are so proud of Amy and her accomplishments,” said co-head coach Tina Bird. “She is truly inspirational and we couldn’t be happier for her.”
