Jeff Thompson is entering his third year as the head coach of Penn State women’s gymnastics after being named the ninth head coach in program history on July 15, 2010. The two-time SEC Coach of the Year, joined the Nittany Lion family in 2010 after 11 successful years at Auburn University in Alabama. He is joined at Penn State by his wife, Rachelle, who serves as the associate head coach. In 2012, Thompson and his staff helped Penn State earn its

seventh ever Big Ten Gymnast of the Year honor, as Sharaya Musser took home the award for the first time in her ca-reer. Musser’s award was the third time Penn State won Big Ten Gymnast of the Year in four years. Additionally, Musser was named an All-American on the floor and balance beam. Thompson also produced six Academic All-Big Ten selections and two NACGC scholar athletes. In his first season at the helm of the Nittany Lion program, Thompson guided the Nittany Lions to a second place finish in the Big Ten Champion-ship, with two gymnastics earning individual event titles, and a berth in the NCAA Regional Cham-pionships as the No. 2 seed. He coached three Nittany Lions to All-Big Ten honors, and Musser, a Honda Award nominee, advanced to the NCAA

National Championship to represent Penn State. Outside the gym, the Nittany Lions excelled in the classroom and community. Five gymnasts earned Academic All-Big Ten laurels and the team was awarded the Penn State Team Community Service Award. In 11 years as the head of the Auburn University women’s gymnas-tics program, Thompson was named the SEC Coach of the Year and NCAA Regional Head Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2008. Despite facing stiff competition in the SEC, Thompson’s teams improved each year. The Tigers qualified for NCAA Regionals eight consecu-tive years. In 2010, Thompson coached Auburn to upset victories against then-No. 8 Arkansas and No. 12 Kentucky. In addition, the Tigers defeated then-No. 8 and five-time defending National Champion Georgia for the first time in program history. As a coaching team at Auburn, Thompson and his wife produced four NCAA All-Americans, four All-SEC team members, three SEC Gymnast of the Year winners and one SEC Freshman of the Year. They coached nine NCAA Championship individual qualifiers and four NCAA Regional Event Champions. Their gymnasts also excelled in the classroom and in the community in their 11 years with the program. There were three SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners, three CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District members, 41 NACGC/W Academic All-Americans and 53 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections. Prior to arriving at Auburn, Thompson was the assistant coach at Louisiana State University from 1994-99 and was the Junior Olym-pic Program Director at the Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy in Fairfield, Ohio from 1993-94. Thompson also held assistant coach-ing positions at two Big Ten institutions, Illinois and Wisconsin, as well as serving as a graduate assistant coach at Kentucky. Thompson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education with an em-phasis in Physical Education from Kentucky in 1985. He went on to receive a Master of Science in Biomechanics in 1995. Coaches

Rachelle Thompson begins her third season as the associate head coach of the Penn State women’s gymnastics program. Prior to Penn State, Thompson spent 11 years at Auburn University in Alabama. Her husband, Jeff, serves as the head coach. During the 2012 campaign, Thompson helped Sharaya Musser earn Penn State’s seventh ever Big Ten Gymnast of the Year honor.Additionally, Musser earned All-American status on floor and bal-ance beam. During her first season as the associate head coach at Penn State, Thompson helped coach the Nittany Lions to a second place finish in the 2011 Big Ten Championship with two Nittany Lions cap-turing individual event titles. Penn State also earned a berth in the NCAA Regional Championships as the No. 2 seed. Sharaya Musser advanced to the NCAA National Championships representing the Nittany Lions. Thompson joined the Auburn staff in 1999 as a choreographer and volunteer coach before being promoted to assistant coach in 2002 and associate head coach in 2006. Her responsibilities includ-ed, but were not limited to, coaching beam and floor, choreographing beam and floor routines, managing all meet contracts, scheduling community service projects, recruiting, as well as handling travel ar-rangements and the budget. She was a two-time Auburn University Assistant Coach of the Year and was selected the 2008 NACGC/W Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year. As a coaching team at Auburn, the Thompsons produced four NCAA All-Americans, four All-SEC team members, three SEC Gymnasts of the Year winners and one SEC Freshman of the Year. They coached nine NCAA Championship individual qualifiers and four NCAA Regional Event Champions. Their gymnasts also excelled in the classroom and in the commu-nity. They had three SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year winners, three CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District members, 41 NACGC/W Academic All-Americans and 53 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections. Prior to joining the Tiger staff, Rachelle was a choreographer and volunteer coach at LSU for six years and at Illinois from 1992-93. Thompson attended LSU and was a three-time NCAA All-Amer-ican gymnast. She was a finalist for the American Award honoring the Top Five Senior Gymnasts, as well as a finalist for the Honda-Broderick Cup. Thompson earned a Bachelor of Science and Education from Auburn. Rachelle and Jeff have two sons, Parker (17) and Griffin (15).

Assistant coach Randy Monahan enters his fifth season with the Penn State women’s gymnastics program. With the Nittany Lions, Monahan aids in recruiting and training student-athletes along with various other aspects of the program. “Randy is one of the finest assistant coaches in NCAA Gymnas-tics,” said head coach Jeff Thompson. “His competitive experience combined with his technical knowledge enables him to put his coaching into terms that every one of our gymnasts can understand and use. He not only can tell them ‘why’ it will work, he can tell them how it will ‘feel’ to do it that way. His years of experience as a competitor have also helped him develop our strength and con-ditioning program. We use nothing but our own body weight to develop the strength, flexibility and endurance that we require in a way that makes sense to everyone on the team. He is also a great recruiter and has been instrumental in helping us land several top gymnasts over the past two seasons.” Monahan was a member of the Ohio State men’s team from 2001 to 2005 and was a seven-time All-American with the Buck-eyes, who captured Big Ten titles in 2002 and 2005. He was the Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and also captured the Big Ten All-Around title in 2003 and 2004 and was a Nissen-Emery Finalist in 2005, finishing second in the all-around at the NCAA Championships that same year. Monahan comes to Penn State from the club coaching ranks, most recently with Artistic Sports Academy Plus out of Harrisburg, Pa. At Artistics Sports, Monahan assisted the head coach in instruc-tion and analysis of youth athletes as well as various coaching and instructional responsibilities. He was also employed by EJM Food Corporation as a Quality Control Specialist. Prior to his time in the Harrisburg area, Monahan was a coach at Buckeye Gymnastics where he worked with a wide variety of ath-letes from levels 4-10. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach with the Ohio State men’s team where he assisted in instructional and managerial capacities as well as having training and competitive responsibilities. Monahan graduated from Ohio State in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in human ecology. Monahan is married to volun-teer assistant coach Jillian Monahan. They reside in State College.

2012 Meet Summaries

at West Virginia with Maryland • January 8MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - The 13th-ranked Penn State women’s gymnas-tics team opened the 2012 slate with a first place finish in a tri-meet hosted by West Virginia. The Nittany Lions earned a team score of 195.775, while West Virginia finished second with a team score of 195.100 and Maryland took third with a 194.225.

Penn State’s score of 195.775 was the highest score the Nittany Lions have earned as a squad in a season-opening meet in program history. The last time Penn State scored a 195 or better in the first meet of the season was in 1999 when the Nittany Lions defeated Rutgers with a 195.075.

Five Nittany Lions competed in the all-around for Penn State, including ju-niors Sharaya Musser and Madison Merriam, sophomore Kassidy Stauder, senior Whitney Bencsko and freshman Krystal Welsh. Musser earned the crown with a 39.500, while two other Nittany Lions finished in the top five. Stauder took third with a 38.950 and Bencsko placed fifth with a 38.625. Merriam scored a 38.450 for sixth and Welsh took seventh with a 38.300.

Penn State opened the meet on the uneven bars where Merriam and Musser joined Maryland’s Karen Tang as the event winners each scoring a 9.850. Senior Alexandra Stine (Philipsburg, Pa.), who competes solely on bars, placed sixth for the Lions with a 9.750, while Stauder scored a 9.725 to take 10th. Welsh posted a 9.700 and Bencsko posted a 9.225 as Penn State’s other two competitors on the event. The Nittany Lions took control of the meet early with a team score of 48.875, while WVU had a 48.825 on vault and Maryland was in third with a 48.300 on beam.

The Lions advanced to beam in rotation two where Musser took the title with a 9.900. Welsh and senior Daryl Konsevick (Rutherford, N.J.) also finished in the top five after each scored a 9.775 to tie for fifth place. Benc-sko posted an eighth place finish with a 9.725 and Stauder was ninth with a 9.700. Merriam recorded a 9.250 on the event. As a team, the Lions posted a 48.875 to improve their team total to 97.750 to remain in first place in the meet with two more rotations to go. West Virginia earned a 48.600 on bars in the second rotation to increase its team score to 97.425, while the Terps scored a 48.500 on floor for a 96.800.

Rotation three had the Nittany Lions competing on floor where Musser was once again Penn State’s top performer. She finished tied for second with a 9.850. Bencsko and Konsevick both finished in fifth place with a 9.825. Merriam scored a 9.775 and Stauder earned a 9.750 for 10th and 11th place, respectively, and Welsh secured a 9.050 for 16th. Penn State combined for a 49.025 on floor and had firm control of the meet with a team score of 146.775. The Mountaineers registered a 48.600 on beam for a team score of 146.025 and Maryland had a team score of 48.625 on vault for a 145.425.

Penn State closed out the meet on vault where Musser earned her third indi-vidual event title of the day with a 9.900 for first. Bencsko turned in a 9.850 to tie for third, while Welsh had a 9.775 for sixth. Freshman Alex Witt (Odessa, Fla.) made her career debut with a 9.700 for 10th and Merriam scored a 9.575. The Nittany Lions team score of 49.000 on the event was plenty to secure the Lions their first meet victory of the season. WVU fin-ished the meet on floor with a 49.075 and Maryland had a 48.800 on bars.

at New Hampshire • January 15DURHAM, N.H. - The No. 13 Penn State women’s gymnastics team con-tinued its winning ways defeating New Hampshire in their second meet of the 2012 season. The Nittany Lions earned a season-high 196.125 to New Hampshire’s 194.250 for the win.

Five Nittany Lions competed in the all-around for Penn State, including juniors Sharaya Musser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Madison Merriam (Gaithersburg, Md.), sophomore Kassidy Stauder (Palmerton, Pa.), senior Whitney Bencsko (Pompton Plains, N.J.) and freshman Krystal Welsh (Bowie, Md.). Musser earned her second all-around title of the season with a 39.425, while Merriam finished second with a 39.350. Bencsko earned a 39.175 for third place. Merriam was Penn State’s top finisher floor with a first place 9.875. Konsevick, Welsh and Bencsko all tied for third scoring a 9.825, while Stauder and Musser finished sixth with a 9.775.

The Nittany Lions had five all-around competitors with junior Sharaya Musser bringing home her fourth all-around title of the season with a 39.275. Senior Whitney Bencsko placed second with a 39.125 and junior Madison Merriam, who hit all four of her routines and was named the team MVP, took third with a 39.075. Sophomore Kassidy Stauder posted a 38.900 for fifth and freshman Krystal Welsh earned a 38.850 for sixth.

Penn State opened the meet on the uneven bars where Merriam and Bencsko were Penn State’s top two finishers placing third and fourth, re-spectively. Merriam posted a 9.775, while Bencsko scored a 9.725. Senior Alexandra Stine (Philipsburg, Pa.) tied for fifth with a 9.700 and Musser tied for eighth with a 9.675. Stauder and Welsh both scored a 9.650 to share tenth place.

vs. Michigan and North Carolina • March 2UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - No. 11 Penn State women’s gymnastics team came from behind in the fourth rotation to win a tri-meet with No. 23 Michigan and North Carolina. The Nittany Lions posted a 196.000, while the Wolverines scored a 195.900 and North Carolina earned a 195.750.

“What an exciting meet,” said head coach Jeff Thompson. “I love the way our team fought until the very end. They had a different type of week of practice and we had them walk into the arena tonight planning to win. Although after uneven bars it looked like that may not happen, we did our best floor routines of the year to come from behind and win by one-tenth. I just wish I knew it was that close, it would’ve been a lot more exciting for me at the end.”

Junior Sharaya Musser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was honored as the Ann Carr Award winner as the most inspirational Penn State gymnast at the meet. She scored a season-high 39.650 in the all-around for the title.

Freshman Alex Witt (Odessa, Fla.) started the Nittany Lions off with a career-high 9.800 on the vault, where the Nittany Lions would put together their best team effort of the season. Senior Alex Stine (Philipsburg, Pa.) tied her personal-best with a 9.850. Juniors Madison Merriam (Gaithersburg, Md.) and Sharaya Musser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) posted a 9.825 and a 9.900, respectively.

In rotation two the Nittany Lions competed on vault and solidified their lead with a team score of 49.150 for a 98.350 overall. Pittsburgh turned in a 48.100 on bars for a 96.950. Merriam was Penn State’s top performer on the event tying her career best with a 9.925. Sophomore Lindsay Mus-grove (League City, Texas) scored a 9.825, while senior Whitney Bencsko (Pompton Plains, N.J.), Welsh and Musser all scored a 9.800.

The Nittany Lions moved on to floor in the third rotation scoring a season-high 49.450 to improve their overall score to 147.800. Pittsburgh continued to trail with at 145.775 after posting a 48.825 on beam.

Senior Daryl Konsevick (Rutherford, N.J.) led off on floor with a 9.875 to tie her season-best, while freshman Lexi Carroll (Olney, Md.) earned a career-high 9.850. Both Welsh and Benscko posted a 9.875 and Merriam scored a 9.900 to tie her season best. Musser led the Lions with a 9.925, which tied her season high.

Penn State closed out the meet on beam scored a 48.625. Despite Pittsburgh scoring a 49.300 on floor, Penn State had developed a strong enough lead to claim the team victory.

Musser was the top Nittany Lion on beam with a 9.775 and Konsevick posted a 9.750. Bencsko earned a 9.725 and Stauder scored a 9.700. Mer-riam rounded out Penn State’s top performers on beam with a 9.675.

The Nittany Lions had four all-around competitors, including Bencsko, Merriam, Musser and Welsh. Musser won her eighth all-around crown of the season with a 39.400. Merriam tied for second with a 39.325, while Welsh took fourth with a 39.075. Bencsko earned a 38.475 for sixth.

vs. Maryland • March 17UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The 12th-ranked Penn State women’s gymnas-tics team closed out its regular season at home with a 196.500-195.550 win over the University of Maryland Saturday night at Rec Hall. The Nit-tany Lions posted a season high team score on the uneven bars of 49.350.

Junior Sharaya Musser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) continued her domi-nance in the all-around, tying her season-best with a 39.650 for first place. Senior Whitney Bencsko (Pompton Plains, N.J.), who competed in her final home meet at Rec Hall, scored a season-high 39.325 for second place, while junior Madison Merriam (Gaitherburg, Md.) posted a 39.225. Freshman Krystal Welsh (Bowie, Md.) totaled a 39.100.

Penn State opened the meet on the vault with a team score of 49.175 to take an early lead against the Terrapins, who scored a 48.775 on the uneven bars. Starting off for the Nittany Lions was freshman Lexi Carroll (Olney, Md.) who scored a 9.700, followed by Bencsko who posted a 9.775. Third in the lineup on vault for Penn State was sophomore Lindsay Musgrove (League City, Texas) who earned a 9.750, and Welsh posted a score of 9.775.

Leading the team on vault for Penn State were Merriam, who tied her career-high with a score of 9.925, and Musser, who closed out the first event with a strong 9.950 score, tying her season best.

In the second rotation, the Nittany Lions transitioned to the uneven bars to post a season-high team score of 49.350. Maryland scored a 49.200 on the vault, allowing the Nittany Lions to improve their team score to 98.525 and maintain the lead. Maryland had a team score of 97.975. Mer-riam claimed the title with a season best 9.900, while sophomore Kassidy Stauder (Palmerton, Pa.) and Welsh both scored an 9.825. Senior Alex Stine (Philipsburg, Pa.), Bencsko, and Musser all put up a solid 9.875.

In rotation three, Penn State headed to beam and was able to hold on to their lead with a combined team score of 147.425 to Maryland’s 147.075. Maryland was on floor and put up a 49.100, while the Nittany Lions posted a team score of 48.900 on the beam. Musser’s score of 9.875 was a meet-high. Bencsko posted a 9.825, and senior Daryl Konsevick (Ruther-ford, N.J.) scored a 9.750.

Penn State closed out their final home meet on floor with a team score of 48.800, while Maryland scored a 48.475 on the beam. Musser tied her career high on floor with a 9.950 to lead Penn State and Bencsko earned a 9.850. 2012 Meet Summaries

at Big Ten Championships • March 24IOWA CITY, Iowa - Junior Sharaya Musser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) was named the 2012 Big Ten Gymnast of the Year at the Big Ten Gymnastics Championships hosted by the University of the Iowa. Penn State finished sixth at the championships, posting a team score of 195.700.

Musser is the second Penn State gymnast in the last four years to be named Big Ten Gymnast of the Year, as former Nittany Lion Brandi Personett was awarded the honor in 2009 and 2010. The 2010 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, Musser marks the seventh time a Nittany Lion has been selected.

In addition, Musser was named to the Big Ten All-Championship Team. She joined Nebraska’s Jessie DeZiel, Jamie Schleppenbach, Emily Wong, Lora Evanstad and Janelle Giblin, Michigan’s Joanna Sampson and Sachi Sugiyama, Emma Stevenson of Iowa, Kelsey Joannides of Illinois and Min-nesota’s amber Hammerschmidt.

The Nittany Lions competed in the second session of the Big Ten Champi-onships as the No. 2 seed along with No. 1 seed Nebraska, No. 3 seed Ohio State and fourth seeded Minnesota. Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois and Iowa all competed in the first session.

Penn State posted a team score of 49.100 on vault in the first rotation where Musser posted a 9.900 to lead the Lions. Senior Whitney Bencsko (Pompton Plains, N.J.) tied her season high with a 9.850, while junior Madison Mer-riam (Gaithersburg, Md.) scored a 9.825. NCAA Regional Championships • April 7RALEIGH, N.C. - The Penn State women’s gymnastics team picked up two regional awards as junior Sharaya Musser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned a bid to the NCAA National Championships with a third place finish in the all-around. The Nittany Lions finished fourth overall at the NCAA Re-gional Championships with a team score of 195.650.

Head coach Jeff Thompson was named the Northeast Region Coach of the Year, while Musser was awarded Northeast Region Gymnast of the Year laurels. Musser has earned her third straight bid to Nationals.

Musser scored a 39.450 in the all-around to secure a bid to nationals. She finished in the top four on three of the four events. Junior Madison Merri-am (Gaithersburg, Md.) totaled a 38.750, freshman Krystal Welsh (Bowie, Md.) earned a 38.575 and senior Whitney Bencsko (Pompton Plains, N.J.) posted a 38.525.

The Nittany Lions opened the meet with a bye before competing on the un-even bars in the second rotation. Penn State earned a team score of 49.050 led by Musser’s 9.850. Merriam, senior Alex Stine (Philipsburg, Pa.), sopho-more Kassidy Stauder (Palmerton, Pa.) and Welsh all posted a 9.800.

On beam in the third rotation, the Nittany Lions had to count a fall, but the final three competitors all hit their routines to close out the event. Stauder led off with a 9.800, while Bencsko earned a 9.600. Competing fifth was senior Daryl Konsevick (Rutherford, N.J.) who posted a 9.825, and Musser anchored the Lions and scored a 9.850.

Penn State spent rotation four on a bye before heading to floor exercise. The Nittany Lions had five gymnasts score 9.800 or better on their way to a team score of 49.050. Musser and Merriam were the top Nittany Lion com-petitors both earning a 9.825. Konsevick, Welsh and Bencsko all earned a 9.800.

Penn State concluded the meet on vault where Penn State posted a team score of 49.225. Musser led the Lions with a 9.925, while Merriam scored a 9.850 and Carroll each scored a 9.850. Senior Whitney Bencsko and Mus-grove rounded out Penn State’s top performers on the event each scoring a 9.800.

NCAA Championships • April 20DULUTH, Ga. - Penn State women’s gymnastics junior Sharaya Musser (Colorado Springs, Colo.) earned NACGC/W All-America status at the NCAA Championships on Friday, April 20. Musser now has six NACGC/W All-America honors for her career.

Musser secured Second Team All-America status on beam and floor to bring her career honors to six. Musser was awarded First Team All-America hon-ors on vault and in the all-around, as well as Second Team All-America laurels on beam and floor in 2010 as a freshman.

NACGC/W All-America status is determined by Friday’s scoring in both the first and second sessions of the NCAA Championships. First Team is determined by first to fourth place on each individual event, while Sec-ond Team is awarded for fifth through eighth places including ties in each session.

Competing with top-ranked Florida who finished in second place in the team competition with a 197.650 to advance to the Super Six on Saturday, Musser opened the second session of the championships on vault posting a 9.700. After a bye in the second rotation Musser and the Gators moved on to the uneven bars where she posted a 9.850.

In the third rotation, Musser finished sixth with a 9.900 on balance beam. After a final bye in the fourth rotation, she scored a 9.850 on floor, which was good enough for eighth place. National Championship History 1974 AIAW - Karen Schuckman becomes Penn State’s first national championship participant and wins the all-around as a freshman. 1975 AIAW - The Penn State team makes its first national championship appearance and finishes in fifth place. Schuckman wins floor exercise and finishes in a tie for the vaulting title. 1976 AIAW - Fifth place. 1977 AIAW - The team climbs to third place led by the brilliant performance of Ann Carr who wins the all- around. 1978 AIAW - Penn State wins its first national championship in gymnastics and in any women’s sport with a 147.70 score, 0.15 ahead of Cal State-Fullerton. Ann Carr sweeps the all-around for the second consecutive year and wins individual titles on bars, balance beam and floor exercise. 1979 AIAW - The Lady Lions host the national championship and finish second to Cal State-Fullerton by 0.10. Marcy Levine wins an event title in floor exercise as a freshman. 1980 AIAW - Penn State captures its second national championship with a score of 145.50, just 0.35 ahead of runner-up Utah. The Lions take the team title without an individual national champion. 1981 AIAW - Third place. Academic Success


Penn State is not only among the top teams in the nation athletically, but also academically. The Nittany Lions consistently produce one of the highest team grade point averages in the country while also racking up several of the highest individual grade point averages. In 2009 Penn State finished 35th in the nation with a team GPA of 3.28 and four Nittany Lion student-athletes were named Scholar Athletes by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women (NACGC/W). To be recognized as a Scholar Athlete, students must have a 3.50 grade point average or higher.

The women’s gymnastics program at Penn State prides itself on excellence, both in the gym and in the classroom. One of the primary academic resources for gymnasts is the Morgan Academic Center. Located in MBNA Building in the middle of campus, the center provides a full range of services for intercollegiate athletes, in-cluding academic advising, career counseling, sports psychology, and sports research.

The purpose of the center is to help the stu-dent-athlete make normal progress toward graduation while managing the demands as-sociated with attending a major NCAA Division I institution. Specific objectives include help-ing student-athletes develop individualized academic plans, providing the means by which student-athletes can assume full responsibility for their education, and assisting freshman stu-dent-athletes in making a successful transition to college life.

That philosophy is evident in the Big Ten Aca-demic All-Conference team. The Nittany Lions, in their 20 years in the Big Ten, have placed 130 student-athletes on the Academic All-Confer-ence team.
