2011-12 VMI Basketball Season Prospectus
2011-12 VMI Basketball Season Prospectus22
The VMI Basketball program last year turnedout to be one of the big surprises in the BigSouth basketball season and exceeded expecta-tions of those who had overlooked the Keydetsin the 2010-11 preseason polls. Picked eighth inthe 10-team preseason poll last October,VMIlabored through injuries and inconsistenciesthroughout the first two-thirds of the seasonbefore catching fire with a February mad dashthat produced five straight conference victoriesto close out the regular season and an upper-place finish (4th) with the right to host a first-round conference tournament game.
After securing a first-round tourney win to runthe streak to six and advance to the semifinals,VMI fell eventually to top-seeded CoastalCarolina on the Chants' home floor to closeout one of the most productive runs in recentprogram history against conference foes - thelongest streak since 1995-96.The Keydets fin-ished out the year with and 18-13 record and10-8 mark in league play. It marked their second
winning season over the past three years.
Now with four starters returning from lastyear's squad including the freshman of the year, will opponents take notice in 2011-12? Theanswer is a resounding yes as the Keydets havebeen tabbed third in this year's preseason poll.VMI appears poised to face the challenges of ateam with higher expectations.
There appears to be plenty of firepower return-ing from the team that led NCAA Division I inscoring for an unprecedented fifth straight sea-son. Four returning starters, 10 lettermen, andfive newcomers will be working to prove thatlast season was no fluke and a firm foundationhas been built to launch VMI basketball in thefuture. The program over the last five years hassecured more total victories on the hardwoodthan any of the service academies or TheCitadel.
Of all the returning parts to the high-scoringVMI offensiveattack, one keycomponent will notreturn and the voidmust be replaced tokeep the score-board flickering thiswinter. GraduatedAll-Big SouthConference guardAustin Kenon, oneof the top 3-pointthreats in the coun-try over the pastfour years, hastaken his talents toprofessional ball inEurope. Kenonranked first overallin the BSC in 3-pointers made and3-point percentageand led in scoring inleague games whileplacing secondoverall in confer-ence scoring. Hebecame VMI's all-time 3-point leaderwith 337 treyswhich ranks third inBig SouthConference all-time.
A quarter of senior performers including threewho were on the floor during VMI's shockingwin over Kentucky in 2008-09, return to forman experienced nucleus that will provide leader-ship this year.
Senior guard Keith Gabriel is a dynamic andexplosive player who can give the team a burstof energy and gives an athletic presence to thewing and could contend for all-conference hon-ors. Gabriel will be working to perform at aconsistent and high level for his senior seasonafter ranking third on the team in scoring and11th in the BSC with made 63 treys whichranked sixth in the league and his 3-point per-centage also ranked 6th in the BSC. Gabriel alsoled the team in steals (53) and placed sixth inthe league.
Senior guard Ron Burks is a dependable veteranperformer who has filled a variety of roles dur-ing his career in the backcourt at point guardand inside.A returning starter who will becounted on for leadership, Burks seems to be abarometer for the team and often draws thetop defensive assignment. Burks played in 24games and missed nearly a month in early sea-son when he injured his hand but returned andmade 22 starts on the season while finishingthird on the team in rebounding with a 4.5average and hitting double figures scoring in 12games.
Senior guard Michael Sparks is an excellentshooter who will be counted on even more forhis outside touch this year, with the graduationof Kenon. Sparks can stretch defenses with hisrange and has been both a starter and reservein his career.

Senior forward Wayne Whiting has battledthrough a shoulder injury throughout hiscareer, but has proven to be very effectivewhen healthy and will give the Keydetsdepth at the inside positions.
Another top returning performer is 6-5power forward Stan Okoye, a versatilefront line player and returning starter whogives the Keydets scoring punch in theinside and can square up to pop the out-side jumper. Okoye should contend for all-conference honors and will be counted onfor leadership. In overall games last year,Okoye ranked fifth in the conference inscoring and was first in FG% and third inrebounding while producing eight double-doubles during the season.
2010-11 Big South Freshman of the YearD.J. Covington put together one of themost impressive late season runs to fuelVMI's resurgence and snag post-seasonhonors including the State Division IFreshman of the Year award. The 6-9Covington brings the Keydets their firstintimidating post presence in years and ison pace to rewrite the school recordbooks - his 57 blocks rank fifth best all-time on the school single-season list andmoved him into 10th on the all-time VMIlist in blocks after just one season.Covington was tabbed Big SouthFreshman of the Week three times last
year and is looking forward to a sensa-tional sophomore season as a Keydet.
Sophomore point guard Rodney Glasgowis a Big South All-Freshman team pick anda returning starter who should continueto progress after together a solid fresh-man season. Glasgow will run the point inVMI's high octane offense and can bothpenetrate and stretch defense with aneffective jumper. In 2010-11, Glasgow ledthe Big South in assist turnover ratio(2.68) and ranked fifth in the conference inassists with 117 assists against just 47turnovers.
Two other junior role players who willprovide punch off the bench are 6-6forward Nick Gore and sophomoreguard Joe Carr. Gore is one of fourKeydet players to appear in all 31 gameson the season and scored in double fig-ures in eight games including four of thefirst of the first seven contests of the yearand averaged 10.9 points and 5.1 reboundsover that span. Carr hopes to have a pro-ductive year after being limited by injuryat the end of last season.
Rounding out the upper class roster issophomore guard Drew Absher who shot62.5% from the floor in limited action lastyear.
VMI inked four signees last year includingtwo in the early period. 5-11 guard BrianBrown (Kings Mountain, N.C) andQuinton Upshur (Norfolk,Va.) should con-tribute scoring and defensive pressure inVMI's up-temp system while spring signeesJordan Weethee (Greensboro, N.C) andJarid Watson (Silver Spring Md.) shouldalso see playing time and make contribu-tions.

Head Coach Duggar Baucom
Duggar Baucom begins his seventh season as head coach of VMIBasketball. Since taking over the program, he has injected a brand offast-paced, high-scoring hoops that has brought the team success on
the court and wide-spread acclaim off the court. Each of the past five seasons, Baucom's Keydets have led the NCAA in
scoring, a feat never before accomplished at the NCAA Division I level. On apair of occasions during that time, the Keydets had the nation's leading scorerdonning their uniform - a feat only performed 10 times in NCAA history. Inaddition, the 2008-09 team’s 24 wins were the second-most in school history, trailing only the 1976-77 team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament's"Sweet 16", and VMI's second-place finish in the Big South was easily its bestsince joining the circuit in 2003-04.
Since transitioning to the up-tempo, high-flying system, the VMI recordbooks and undergone a major facelift as 77 school individual, team and facilityrecords been rewritten in the Baucom era.The VMI head man has earned mul-tiple contract extensions during his time in Lexington, and has proved himselfworthy of such by leading his team to two conference tournament finals andbecoming the second-winningest coach in Keydet basketball history.
Last season saw VMI return to conference contender status, as theKeydets won 18 games and advanced to the second round of the Big SouthChampionship. Those wins included a first round tournament win overWinthrop, VMI’s second home conference tournament win in three years afternot having hosted a postseason game in the 31 years prior. Senior AustinKenon graduated as the Institute’s all-time leading three-point shooter, and the#5 scorer in program history as well.
One of Baucom’s high points was the 2008-09 breakthrough campaign, which began with a win that was described by renowned author John Feinsteinas “pretty high on the all-time stunners list”.VMI entered the hallowed halls ofRupp Arena and walked away with a historic, 111-103 win over Kentucky infront of a silenced crowd of 22,579.That victory kick-started an unforgettablecampaign that saw the Keydets profiled in Sports Illustrated, ESPN TheMagazine and the New York Times, along with several other major media out-lets, all while winning 10 more games than the previous season and advancingto the program’s second Big South Championship Final in three seasons. Theseason saw Baucom honored as the 2009 National Association of BasketballCoaches (NABC) District 3 Coach of the Year, while he was also among 10finalists for the Hugh Durham Award, given annually to the nation’s top mid-major coach.
The Keydets' investment in the high-octane approach paid immediate divi-dends when Baucom and staff rolled out the strategy two weeks before the2006-07 season opener. The results were astounding. Using an up-tempo sys-tem for most of the season, the Keydets won the most games (14) in nineyears and advanced to the championship game of the Big South Tournament.

The Keydets also set new NCAA season marks inthree-pointers, both made and attempted, 3-pointersmade per game and steals.
VMI was declared the 2006-07 stat champion infour team categories and two individual categories. The Keydets ranked first in Division I in scoringoffense (100.9 PPG), three point field goals (13.4)made per game, assists per game (14.8), and stealsper game (13.4).
Individually, junior forward Reggie Williams wasdeclared the scoring champion in Division I afteraveraging 28.1 points per game. Sophomore guardTravis Holmes captured the steals per game statisticalchampionship with 3.4 per game.
Records fell in bunches that season as well, asby season’s end, nearly 75 records ranging from theVMI school annals to opponent facility marks hadfresh ink on them.
During the campaign, Baucom's program gar-nered national recognition for their astounding offen-sive numbers as media outlets from all across thecountry wanted to tell the story. The New YorkTimes, ESPN.com and Sports Illustrated.com werejust some of the national outlets who featuredKeydet basketball.
By leading VMI to the Big South Finals wherethey fell to eventual champion Winthrop by a slimthree-point margin, Baucom guided the Keydets to aconference championship game setting for the firsttime since 1988.
Baucom became the 29th head basketball coachof the Virginia Military Institute on April 12, 2005,bringing impressive credentials from TusculumCollege in Greenville,Tennessee, where he directedthe NCAA Division II Pioneers to back-to-back win-ning seasons including a conference regular seasonand conference tournament championship. While at Tusculum, Baucom mentored three All-South Atlantic Conference selections in Brad Hawks(2003-04, 2004-05), Drew Harmon (2003-04) andGreg McIntosh (2004-05). Baucom was namedTusculum's head coach in August, 2003, and guidedthe squad in his debut season to a 19-8 record whilecapturing TC's first-ever South Atlantic ConferenceMen's Basketball Championship. It was alsoTusculum's best basketball record since the Pioneersbecame a NCAA Division II member. Baucom wasnamed 2004 South Atlantic Conference Coach of theYear.

where he served as an assistant coach with theWildcats. Davidson had a banner season posting a25-5 tally sheet while claiming a SouthernConference championship with a 14-0 league mark. The Wildcats were ranked fourth in the nation inscoring margin (+15.0) as they advanced to theNational Invitational Tournament.
Baucom also served three seasons as an assis-tant coach at SoCon member Western CarolinaUniversity. While at the Cullowhee, N.C. school, hedirected the Catamounts' recruiting efforts and land-ed several top players including guard Kevin Martin, who was a 2004 first round draft pick of theSacramento Kings.
