A leading manufacturerof innovative plastic prod-ucts, Lundell Plastics hasnearly saturated the agricul-ture industry with its prod-ucts, and the company is ex-panding in a related market:grain processing.

Lundell Plastics is seeingincreased sales to grain-pro-cessing plants around theU.S. and has made a namefor itself in this industrythat processes grain forethanol, livestock feed andhuman consumption.

With its 30th year ofproduct innovations ap-proaching in 2011, thecompany continually looksfor ways to increase effi-ciency and reduce costs forcustomers.

Several months ago,Lundell Plastics added a13,000-square-foot expan-sion to its Odebolt, head-quarters in order to accom-modate high demand fromvarious industries.

Lundell Plastics first en-tered the grain-processingmarket about 20 years ago, gaining traction by offer-ing plastic products to re-place traditional steelparts, which are prone tocorrosion and not asdurable as Lundell's high-tech poly.

They’ve also recently in-troduced new products that

will benefit grain-process-ing plants, including dragconveyer paddles, U-troughliners and plastic augerflighting.

Considering the process-ing plants’ needs, LundellPlastics offers flighting tofit 10-, 13- and 17-inchaugers.

Since processing plantshandle significantly more

grain than small farms, theyrequire larger diameters ofLundell Plastics’ productsto fit their commercial-grade augers.

Brian Lundell said cus-tomers are pleased with theLundell Plastics productsbecause “they’re happy tosee cost savings, both withthe initial prices and thesavings over time.”

Lundell believes that be-cause many plants find itdifficult to reduce operatingcosts, Lundell Plasticsproducts have been able tosuccessfully advance quick-ly in the grain-processingindustry, even in the inter-national market.

From the company’sheadquarters in Odebolt,Lundell Plastics has

shipped its productsthroughout the U.S. andaround the globe for nearly30 years.

Lundell said he antici-pates more sales to thegrain-processing industry inthe future as they add newproducts and larger sizes ofexisting products.

“We can offer customerssome things that biggercompanies can’t,” he said.“I think part of the reasonwe’ve grown into the grain-processing industry is be-cause of our approach to-ward personal service.

“As we branch out, wemaintain focus on costumerservice, which will ulti-mately help our customersgrow their businesses too.”

Epley Brothers Hybrids Inc.was formed by brothers Kennethand Floyd Epley.

They began breeding hybridsin 1934 with top yielding hybridsas their main focus.

They worked together untilFloyd retired in 1960.

Kenneth continued until his re-tirement in 1983 when his foursons and son-in-law proceededforward with the business. Thisbusiness continues today employ-ing nine employees, four of whichare third-generation seed farmers.

We are a local, independent, family owned business.

With regional companies hav-ing to sell the best average hybridthroughout their large region, wecan focus on our small sales areaand on the best products for thoseacres. With conditions being sodifferent in the same maturityzone and from farmer to farmer, itis possible for us to produce thebest hybrids for those areas.

With Epley’s emphasis on cornand bean production, all parts ofthe quality seed production are

managed by family members. This includes the hybrid selec-tions, seeding, detasseling, har-vesting, conditioning, and bag-ging.

Family is a large part of thisbusiness, and we are all hands onwith all of the aspects of seed andseed production.

With all of these aspects being

covered by family we can then fo-cus on bringing the best productsat competitive prices.

Hybrid selection is a very im-portant part of the managementscheme.

You have to bring the rightproduct to the right acres, or youwon’t have success. Finding theright hybrid and placing it well is

one of the advantages to being afamily owned independent seedcompany.

Our motto is dependability ofyield and to do this you don’thave to have the greatest numberof acres under production, youjust have to do better with theacres that you have under produc-tion. Every bushel of seed sold

shall be worthy if the planter’sconfidence, as a large factor fordependable yield per acre.

Quality, a family tradition atEpley Brothers Hybrids, Inc. ispassed on from our family toyours with the purchase of our de-pendable products. Give us a calland let us help you improve yourbottom line.

GILMORE CITY — Over the past 25years, the agricultural and consumer linesfrom Calcium Products Inc. has continuedto grow both in distribution and new prod-ucts, designed to enhance the soil and re-spond to increased calls for production.

“As the agricultural community andhomeowners face increased costs in fertil-izers, concerns about the environment anda call for increased productivity,” saidCraig Dick, vice president of sales andmarketing for the employee-owned firm,“we’ve been able to expand our selectionof effective soil amendments, which in-crease yields while decreasing costs.”

Calcium Products has two divisions andthree plants. The original company, found-ed by Larry Moore, manufactures a superi-or, high quality agricultural liming product— SuperCal 98G — in several sizes, aswell as a natural gypsum product — Super-Cal SO4 — which provides a wide rangeof nutrients designed to bolster planthealth.

Last year, Calcium Products Inc. beganmanufacturing HumaCal, which not onlyadds nutrients, but also adds organic mate-rial to soils lacking those fundamentalbuilding blocks.

Another Calcium Products division is aconsumer and professional lawn and gar-den line that manufactures a number of pet-safe, kid-safe products.

“Over the years, and even during the re-cent recession, Calcium Products Inc. hascontinued to expand our research and de-velopment as well as our marketing,” Dicksaid. “That has resulted in new products aswell as increased national exposure anddistribution. Consumers can find many ofour products coast-to-coast, as well as inCanada.”

The increase in product lines and distri-bution has also meant an increase in job op-portunities for the once small company.

“We’ve hired six people over the pastyear in many sectors of our operation fromoffice staff to sales and marketing,” Dicksaid. “Success at the wholesale and retaillevels has also mandated an increase inproduction facilities, as well as storage. This past summer we opened a new facilityin Aplington, and we continue to engagenew partners in expansion efforts.”

The latest expansion has led CalciumProducts into Western Canada and an ex-clusive marketing agreement with ENRDistribution, a wholesale crop nutrition

distributor based in Alberta. What makes the items Calcium Products

Inc. manufactures so unique is the puritylevel and manufacturing process of the nat-ural material mined in Fort Dodge andGilmore City.

For example SuperCal 98G is a limingagent used to control soil pH. For yearsfarmers have been encouraged to spreadtons of ag lime per acre. However, becauseSuperCal 98G is 98 percent pure and isprocessed to an ultra-fine powder, then pel-letized, the company agronomists and deal-ers recommend just a few hundred poundsto the acre.

“It’s difficult to get producers to under-stand that with our products you simplydon’t have to use as much because of thepurity and our manufacturing process. That’s why we recently launched a websiteand video on WhenLessIsBest.com,” Dicksaid. “We’ve found lots of acceptance andunderstanding when we frame the conver-sation around how farmers can save moneyby using a superior product that helps in-crease yields”

It’s also purity and crop response thatdrives sales of SuperCal SO4, a naturallyminded gypsum soil amendment comingfrom Fort Dodge.

“Gypsum provides a number of nutrientsincluding calcium and sulfur, both neces-sary for plant health and vigor,” Dick said.“It seems strange to most people who don’trealize that sulfur is so important a nutrientbut, because we’ve done such a good job incleaning up air quality by reducing the useof many fossil fuels, we now find it neces-sary to add gypsum, which contains sulfur,to our crop fertility program.”

Technology abounds inagriculture today — vari-able rate fertilizer applica-tions, auto steering, preci-sion planting, GPS spray-ing and harvesting to namea few.

Managing your storedgrain now offers some ex-citing new technology aswell.

A producer can monitorstored grain without leav-ing the house or from anylocation that has Internetservice.

Tri-States Grain Condi-tioning Inc. now offers twowireless systems that canmake monitoring storedgrain easier and faster thangetting that second cup ofcoffee.

Using TSGC tempera-ture cables to give a com-plete temperature profile oftheir bins, producers willbe able to monitor their

grain more efficiently andwith greater accuracy thanever before.

The SafeTrack WirelessGrain Temperature Moni-toring System can be pro-grammed to automaticallytake temperatures and savethem for later viewing.

Grain temperature histo-ry reports are also availableto be printed out. Instead oftaking two to three hoursfor a large operation, read-ing temperatures can nowbe done in minutes.

Another option is theGrainTRAC remote binmonitoring system. Thissystem utilizes a cell phonemodem to transfer datafrom the TSGC tempera-ture cables to an internetwebsite, www.wagnet.net.

The producer is given auser name and a passwordto ensure privacy. Oncelogged onto the website,

the producer can view agraphical display of histemperatures as well as nu-merical.

Either of these wirelesssystems will save you timeand money, while provid-ing peace of mind about thetrue condition of yourgrain.

Knowing your grain tem-peratures, while watchingfor changes, is the only safeway to monitor the condi-tion of your grain.

TSGC Inc. is one of thelargest suppliers of graintemperature monitoringequipment in the world andis located in Spirit Lake,Iowa.
