SPIRIT LAKE —Tech-nology abounds in agricul-ture today — variable ratefertilizer applications, autosteering, precision plant-ing, GPS spraying and har-vesting to name a few.

Managing your storedgrain now offers some ex-citing new technology aswell.

A producer can monitorstored grain without leav-ing the house or from anylocation that has Internetservice.

Tri-States Grain Condi-tioning Inc. now offers twowireless systems that canmake monitoring storedgrain easier and faster thangetting that second cup ofcoffee.

Using TSGC tempera-ture cables to give a com-plete temperature profile oftheir bins, producers willbe able to monitor their

grain more efficiently andwith greater accuracy thanever before.

The SafeTrack WirelessGrain Temperature Moni-toring System can be pro-grammed to automaticallytake temperatures and savethem for later viewing.

Grain temperature histo-ry reports are also availableto be printed out. Instead oftaking two to three hoursfor a large operation, read-ing temperatures can nowbe done in minutes.

Another option is theGrainTRAC remote binmonitoring system. Thissystem utilizes a cell phonemodem to transfer datafrom the TSGC tempera-ture cables to an internetwebsite, www.wagnet.net.

The producer is given auser name and a passwordto ensure privacy. Oncelogged onto the website,

the producer can view agraphical display of histemperatures as well as nu-merical.

Either of these wirelesssystems will save you timeand money, while provid-ing peace of mind about thetrue condition of yourgrain.

Knowing your grain tem-peratures, while watchingfor changes, is the only safeway to monitor the condi-tion of your grain.

TSGC Inc. is one of thelargest suppliers of graintemperature monitoringequipment in the world andis located in Spirit Lake,Iowa.

ODEBOLT — A leadingmanufacturer of innovativeplastic products, LundellPlastics has nearly saturatedthe agriculture industry withits products, and the compa-ny is expanding in a relatedmarket: grain processing.

Lundell Plastics is seeingincreased sales to grain-pro-cessing plants around theU.S. and has made a namefor itself in this industrythat processes grain forethanol, livestock feed andhuman consumption.

With its 30th year ofproduct innovations ap-proaching in 2011, thecompany continually looksfor ways to increase effi-ciency and reduce costs forcustomers.

Several months ago,Lundell Plastics added a13,000-square-foot expan-sion to its Odebolt, head-quarters in order to accom-modate high demand fromvarious industries.

Lundell Plastics first en-tered the grain-processingmarket about 20 years ago, gaining traction by offer-ing plastic products to re-place traditional steelparts, which are prone tocorrosion and not asdurable as Lundell's high-tech poly.

They’ve also recently in-troduced new products that

will benefit grain-process-ing plants, including dragconveyer paddles, U-troughliners and plastic augerflighting.

Considering the process-ing plants’ needs, LundellPlastics offers flighting tofit 10-, 13- and 17-inchaugers.

Since processing plantshandle significantly more

grain than small farms, theyrequire larger diameters ofLundell Plastics’ productsto fit their commercial-grade augers.

Brian Lundell said cus-tomers are pleased with theLundell Plastics productsbecause “they’re happy tosee cost savings, both withthe initial prices and thesavings over time.”

Lundell believes that be-cause many plants find itdifficult to reduce operatingcosts, Lundell Plasticsproducts have been able tosuccessfully advance quick-ly in the grain-processingindustry, even in the inter-national market.

From the company’sheadquarters in Odebolt,Lundell Plastics has

shipped its productsthroughout the U.S. andaround the globe for nearly30 years.

Lundell said he antici-pates more sales to thegrain-processing industry inthe future as they add newproducts and larger sizes ofexisting products.

“We can offer customerssome things that biggercompanies can’t,” he said.“I think part of the reasonwe’ve grown into the grain-processing industry is be-cause of our approach to-ward personal service.

“As we branch out, wemaintain focus on costumerservice, which will ulti-mately help our customersgrow their businesses too.”

BOONE —What startedas a hobby has turned into acottage business for ruralBoone residents Dave andMary Knight.

They transform used util-ity poles into full dimensionlumber and make hay racks.

With 4-by-8-inch beamsunderneath and full 2-inchthick planks for the bed theyare some of the sturdiestracks around.

The racks are 8-feet wideand 16-feet long and featurea 5-foot back.

All the customer does issupply the running gear,Dave Knight said.

Knight said he purchasedutility poles five years ago, along with a sawmill, tobuild himself a garage.

But first he needed a newhay rack and made one forhimself. Then a neighborsaw it and suggested he tryto sell them.

A couple sold at an auc-tion, Knight said, then the

auctioneer ordered two andother people ordered racksand a flourishing extra in-come stream was created.

“Everything is madefrom the utility poles,”Knight said. “It keeps themout of the landfill and putsthem into pretty good use.”

As a trademark, Knight

attaches an old horseshoe tothe back.

The sawmill is also avail-able for custom work andthe Knights also buy wal-nuts in October and hullthem for Hammond Prod-ucts, based in Stockton, Mo.

By the way, the garagenever got built, Knight said.

Are you tired of enormous increases the corporate seed companies have padded down?

A family owned and operated independent seed company!

Let us help you improve your bottom line!

(Reprinted with permis-sion from Seed Today)SHELL ROCK — Epley

Brothers Hybrids, Inc., a thirdgeneration, family-ownedseed company, spans the de-velopment of the hybrid seedcorn industry in the UnitedStates.

Established by brothersKenneth and Floyd Epley in1934, the company history be-gins when ears of doublecross-hybrid seed were driedon steel racks, shelled by hand, and sold in hand-tied bags.

Remnants of that bygoneera are still on display in thesmall building that serves as aEpley’s parent seed house.

Juxtapositioned across asmall, grassy yard from theold parent stock house is anew 2012 conditioning towercomplete with optical sorter, and refuge-in-a-bag packingequipment designed to blendand pack the most current,eight-trait stacked GM cornhybrids.

Nearby are three corrugated

steel grain bins outfitted withJelco dryers.

Holding the entire seedbusiness together is a familybelief that their seed productsare a personal expression ofthe family’s commitment totake responsibility for theircustomers’ yields and profitsby providing highest qualityhybrids designed specificallyfor local growing conditions.

The operation of the seedbusiness is managed by Ken-neth Epley’s four sons —Paul, James, Wayne andRobert.

“Our motto is to providedependability of yield to ourcustomers,” said Bill Rover,Kenneth’s grandson. “We as afamily are directly involved inthe business and closely su-pervise every detail of grow-ing and conditioning the seedthat carries our name.”

All Epley’s corn and soy-bean seed is produced on thefamily’s 1,500-acre farm, plus on a few additional rentedacres.

Dealer networkEpley Brothers seed prod-

ucts are distributed in Iowaand in three surrounding states— southern Minnesota, east-ern South Dakota, and easternNebraska through a networkof farmer dealers.

“The hybrids we produceare selected for the growingconditions in our marketarea,” said Paul Epley. “Thereis a vast difference betweenEpley Brothers hybrids andthose mass-produced by othercompanies.

“With conditions being sodifferent in the same maturityarea as you cross the country, the practice of mass-produc-ing hybrids usually eliminatesthe best hybrids for a specificlocal area,” he said.

Epley’s marketing targetsgrain and dual-purpose cus-tomers. Most of their cus-tomers operate less than5,000 acres.

“Each year we produce hy-brids with a wide range of

agronomic strengths and withvarying combinations of dis-ease and pest resistance to suitour customers’ varied condi-tions,” said Wayne Epley.“When we look at the GMtraits available to us, we selecttraits and genetic selectionsthat will work together toserve a purpose for our cus-tomers.

“Our seed products aremore than items in a catalog. They represent our pledge toour customers that we willcreate better-than-averageadapted seed so that they canmake the most profit fromevery seed they plant.”

The company’s 2012 cornseed catalog includes 56 hy-brids ranging in maturity from95 days to 113 days. Theproduct list includes nine Ep-ley Gold Star conventional hy-brids with no GM traits.

Conditioning facilityTen years ago, the Epley

brothers made plans for a mul-ti-phase expansion of their

seed business. Those plans, however, were derailed bysome unforeseen events. However, in 2011, their planswere revised and updated byPopp Engineering, of Ames, with construction set for2012.

“In some ways, we are for-tunate that our facility hasbeen designed now rather that10 years earlier when wecould foresee RIB packagingor the need to provide expand-ed seed treatment options,”Rover said. “What we havenow is a facility capable of an-swering our need for top qual-ity seed through the foresee-able future.”

Major features of the newfacility include:

∫ Westrup cleaners for flatscreen sizing.

∫ RIB packaging for bulk,mini-bulk, and single-unitcontainers, open-ended blend-ing percentage.

∫ Satake optical sorter.∫ Oliver Mfg. gravity sep-

arator.

∫ Bayer CropScience seedcoaters.

Seed exits the Westrupcleaner separated into two flatand two round grades. Next inline is the Satake sorter and theOliver gravity separator.

“By putting the opticalscanner immediately after theWestrup cleaner, we are ableto pull out the off-color smallrounds which takes some ofthe pressure off the gravity,”Rover said. “We still have theoption of going to three roundsizes if needed.”

Using a flat screen is slow-er than using a drum sizer, butEpley brothers feel it is moregentle on seed. In order forcustomers to get 99 percent orbetter planting singulation, grading is necessary.

“With this new facility, weare light years ahead of wherewe were,” Rover concludes.“We have made a commit-ment to the future, to our cus-tomers, and to helping themrealize the full potential of ourseed products.”

CONRAD — In 1921,Thomas Ritchie, of Os-kaloosa, patented the firstautomatic waterer device byconnecting undergroundrunning water to an auto-matic, float-controlled wa-tering equipment.

At that time, Ritchieheated his waterers with akerosene lamp and the wa-ter remained free-flowingeven in cold weather.

Farmers liked the labor-saving qualities of Ritchie’sfirst patented waterer andfrom there a new businesswas born.

Today, after a move toConrad in 1943, and almost90 years later, Ritchie isemployee-owned and canpoint with pride to an un-matched reputation forquality and integrity.

Automatic waterers are

Helping producers grow

ALTON — Dennis VonArb, inventor and the per-son in charge of sales andmarketing, saw a need todesign a piece of equipmentto help with visibility andmaneuverability while mov-ing machinery around thefarm.

He then designed the“Move-It” and gave this de-sign to Custom Cut Manu-facturing Inc., of Sheldon, who took the blueprint ofVon Arb’s idea and broughtit to life.

Von Arb then used the prototype of “Move-It” for two years before starting the man-ufacturing process.

The “Move-It” is a skid loader attachment that helps move machinery, wagons and5th wheel trailers in and out of the machine shed as well as around the yard.

Built with heavy duty construction the “Move-It” works with both large and smallskid loaders and allows great visibility for the driver.
