KiDS THrivEAT THE YLetter from the President

Children have long been at the heart of our mission at the YMCA. That’s why we are particularly excited to announce new enhancements to our Afterschool Program. Our high quality program with an established history of providing activities that help to positively develop our youth is being enriched using many suggestions received through recent parent interviews and surveys. We are here to effectively serve you and your children and are constantly reshaping our programs to meet your needs.

This fall and spring we will continue our emphasis on homework help; healthy games, exercise and snacks; and supervised free play. But, in addition to these important facets of our program, we will also be adding a water safety component for all of our children. The price for this important base program will actually be less than prior semesters, with an option for parents to select specialized enhancements if they so choose. These include valuable offerings such as martial arts, tennis, tutoring and music, with each offering provided for a reasonable instruction fee.

With an emphasis on convenience for our parents and an interest in assisting you wherever we can, if your child participates in a Y sport, exercise class or swim lessons during after school hours, we will gladly escort them to the program at no extra charge. We want to ensure your child can benefit from everything we have to offer! Once the Y bus picks them up from school, they are in our safe hands and you can rest easy that they are receiving the best of care and the finest after school enrichment available.

Our 100 Adams Mill Road location in Simpsonville, formerly the Golden Strip Y, will soon be renamed the Adams Mill Program Center. This campus will focus on youth, sports and senior programming and will soon be getting a facelift! The refurbished building and grounds will provide the specialized spaces that will best serve the active participants in the Golden Strip area.

If you enroll your child in our Afterschool Program before August 31, we will waive the enrollment fee for you. The new rate is just $55 per week for Y members at any of our locations or at any of the schools for which we provide care. Scholarships are also available on a sliding scale basis. If you have questions, please contact us at 242-1111.

Thank you for choosing the YMCA. There are always more and more great reasons to belong to the Y!Yours in good health,

Scot BaddleyPresident/CEO, YMCA of Greenville

BE THE cHAnGEAnnually, the Y Endowment Fund makes grants available to all of the Y branches. Each branch has the opportunity to apply for funding for outreach, program support, collaborations, and small capital improvements. Since its inception, the Y Endowment has distributed more than $500,000 to the branches. This support has given the branches the needed seed funding for many projects and sustained outreach efforts in many low-income communities.

For information on how you can “Be the Change” through a gift to the YMCA Endowment, please contact:Jamie Inman at 242-1111 ext 21 or [email protected].

South Carolina’s Youth in Government program is the fifth largest in the nation, serving more than 2,000 students from almost 70 schools – public, private and charter – across the state. Middle and high school students gain hands-on learning in civic engagement, state government, international understanding, and values.

High School Model Legislature and Court Conference (November 16-19)– Take over the South Carolina Statehouse, Court of Appeals and South Carolina Supreme Court. Create a model state legislature, trial and appellate court. Write bills and work to get them passed and signed by the Youth Governor. Student attorneys try cases and argue before the YIG Appeals Court and serve as legislators, lobbyists, attorneys, media, and leadership.

Middle School Model Legislature (November 17-19)– Create a model State Legislature, serving as legislators, media and leadership roles, using the actual House and Senate chambers in the South Carolina Statehouse.

Middle School Model United Nations (April 2012)– Work in small groups studying a country, learning about its culture, geography, history, government and people. Then come together in April to present proposals about your country and participate in the two-day Festival of Nations held at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly Conference Center in Black Mountain, NC.

Horizons Values Conference (May 2012)– Come together and discuss issues and challenges that are relevant to you. High School students from across the state participate in this conference, which takes place at YMCA Camp Greenville.

YMCA Youth Conference on National Affairs (CONA) (July 2012) – Spend the week discussing national and international issues in positive, civil discourse. Delegations from Youth in Government programs across the nation participate in this week-long conference, which takes place at the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly Conference Center in Black Mountain, NC. A delegation of 25 students is selected from YIG clubs across the state to represent South Carolina at CONA.
