the University, approved a name change to Alabama State University.

TODAYIn 2008, ASU proudly welcomed back noted historian Dr. William H. Harris as the University’s president. Harris had served as the University’s 10th president from 1994 to 2000. During his first tenure, Harris was instrumental in the Knight v. the State of Alabama remedial decree, which resulted in much of the tremendous growth that Alabama State University has experienced over the past 15 years.

Because of the decree, the University is being transformed both physically and academically. Multi-million dollar buildings now grace the 165-acre campus and new con-struction is underway, including work on a $50 million sta-dium. The stadium is expected to be completed in time for the Turkey Day Classic in 2012.

High-demand academic programs have been established and cutting-edge research is being conducted by ASU faculty and students. We now offer the Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science as well as master’s and educa-tion specialist degrees. The University also offers the Ph.D. in microbiology, the clinical doctorate in physical therapy, and the Ed.D. in educational leadership, policy and law. With a focus on a global initiative, the campus has a more diverse population while maintaining its proud heritage as a Historically Black College or University (HBCU).

Alabama State University charters more than 70 student organizations, including nine Greek organizations and 17 honors organizations. In addition to social, cultural and political groups, students have musical performance opportunities, such as the Marching Hornets and the Uni-versity Choir, and departmental organizations for most majors. Intercollegiate athletic programs include baseball, basketball, tennis, track and field, volleyball, softball, golf, bowling and cross country. The ASU Hornets are members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and com-pete at the NCAA Division I level.

TOMORROWASU has its eye on the future while remaining true to its mission of being a student-centered institution that provides quality programs in undergraduate and graduate instruc-tion, continuing education and research. The faculty, staff and administration of the University are committed to the pursuit of the institutional goal of preparing students to compete successfully in an increasingly global economy.

Alabama State University is in the midst of a vital season of trans-formation. While holding true to its legacy of providing a quality education for its students, the University also is experiencing un-precedented growth, both physically and academically.

YESTERDAYAlabama State University evolved from the Lincoln Normal School that opened on Nov. 13, 1867, with 113 students, thanks to the courageous efforts of its founders, nine former slaves from Perry County, Ala., known affectionately as the Marion Nine. The Lincoln School incorporated on July 18, 1867. In 1868, the State Board of Education gave the school a new designation, and it became known as Lincoln Normal School.

In December 1873, the state board accepted the transfer of title to the school after a legislative act was passed au-thorizing the state to fund a Normal School. George N. Card was named president. Thus, in the predecessor of Alabama State University became the first state-supported educational institution for blacks. This began ASU’s rich history as a “Teachers’ College.”

In 1887, the second president, William Burns Paterson, was instrumental in the institution’s move from Marion to Montgomery. In the decades that followed, Lincoln Nor-mal School became a junior college and, in 1928, a full four-year institution. More name changes were on the ho-rizon: In 1929, the institution became State Teachers Col-lege at Montgomery, Alabama State College for Negroes in 1948, and Alabama State College in 1954. In 1969, the State Board of Education, then the governing body of

ACADEMIC OFFERINGSAlabama State University’s academic offerings are as rich as they are varied: from four-year baccalaureates, to master’s to doctoral degrees. Freshmen students first enroll in University College for a background in general education. After completing the courses, a student must decide on a field of specialization and transfer to one of the university’s degree-granting colleges, schools or divisions. Students then devote their time to a specific field of study which will lead to a bachelor’s degree.

Dr. William H. Harris has had a long and distinguished career in higher education. He is among few academicians who have contributed to their fields of study and who have served the higher education community as the CEO and president for both public and private post-secondary institutions.

After completing the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at Indiana University, Harris began his professional career at Indiana University as an assistant professor of history. He rose through the ranks to become professor of history and concomitantly served as associate dean of the Graduate School and director of the CIC Minorities Fellowships Program. He also was a Fulbright Professor and Visiting Professor of History at the University of Hamburg (1977-1978) in Germany.

He subsequently led Texas Southern University (1988-1993) and later Alabama State University (1994-2000). He left retirement briefly in 2005-2006 to serve as interim president of Fort Valley State University and Texas College in 2008.

Harris returned to Alabama State University as president in 2008 with a bold new vision centered on advancing the institutions Culture of Learning. He has since helped University leaders launch an initiative called Vision 2020: The Transformation of Alabama State University. During his second tenure, the University has experienced dramatic growth. New state-of-the-art facilities have been erected and the University has more than $130 million in active construction underway. ASU has also been approved for new high-demand degree programs and has received reaccreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACS COC).

Harris has earned numerous awards and distinctions, including being named a Distinguished Son of Fitzgerald, Ga., his birthplace, one of 10 individuals so honored during the city’s Centennial Celebration; recipient (with his wife, Wanda) of a Trustees Special Leadership Award from the Paine College Board of Trustees; recipient of the Paine College Alumni Association Charles G. Harris also is designated as one of the Fifty Most Influential Black Georgians. He is the author of two books: Keeping the Faith: A. Phillip Randolph, Milton P. Webster, and the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, published in 1977 and reissued in 1991 by the University of Illinois Press; and The Harder We Run: Black Workers Since the Civil War, published in 1982 by Oxford University Press.

Dr. Harris is married to Wanda Fillmore Harris and the couple has two children, Cynthia and William J. Harris.

AThlETIC ADMINISTRATIONEntering his second season as Athletic Director at Alabama State University, Stacy Danley has helped position Hornet Athletics as one the best mid-major programs in the nation.

The 2010-11 season was historic because Alabama State Uni-versity won Southwestern Athletic Conference, league or division titles in five sports. The Hornets also posted their best finish in the Commissioner’s Cup Standings, finishing second for the first time in school history. A total of 17 of ASU’s 18 athletic programs qualified to compete for SWAC Championships.

The championships were just one of a series of milestones achieved under Danley’s watch: • Football won the division championship for the first time

since 2004 • Men’s basketball competed in the NCAA Tournament for

the second time in three seasons. • In March 2011, the new Hornet Baseball Complex opened

as the program returned to play games on campus for the first time since 1996.

• In June, the football program moved into the new Houston Markham Football Complex, a two-story, 26,000-square-foot facility overlooking the practice fields at Hornet Sta-dium.

• Later this summer, the softball complex will be completed and, in 2012, the Lady Hornets’ softball team will play home games on campus for the first time.

• The crown jewel of the athletics construction projects, the new 30,000-seat football stadium, is expected to open on Thanksgiving Day, 2012, when the Hornets face Tuskegee in the annual Turkey Day Classic.

Danley comes to ASU after serving as Associate Director of the J.F. Smith Group. He coordinated all fundraising consultant ac-tivities under the HBCU division while also managing and fa-cilitating campus departmental assessment initiatives for HBCU clients.

Before his work with the J.F. Smith Group, Danley served as Director of Athletics at Tuskegee University (2008-09). He nego-tiated football and men’s and women’s basketball game guaran-tees, secured corporate sponsorships, and oversaw the installa-tion of new locker rooms.

The former Auburn University running back spent eight years (1997-2005) at his alma mater. He spent six years as the Assis-tant Athletic Director for External Affairs, before being promoted to Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs.

He served as the compliance officer for six Olympic sports and monitored all recruiting activities, while working with team bud-gets in excess of $3.4 million. He also directed the student-

athlete mentor program and assisted with “Operation Follow Through,” the university’s degree completion program. He spent his last two years at Auburn as the Associate Athletic Director and Men’s Sports Coordinator.

Danley also created and directed the Former Player Fund-Raising Initiative and developed NCAA and Southeastern Conference compliance systems to monitor programs and ensure institutional control was maintained.

He was the project administrator for the Auburn University Na-tional Youth Sports Program and served on the state of Alabama’s Athlete Agent Regulatory Commission.

During his college years at Auburn, Danley lettered four years, earning All-SEC honors and was named the SEC Sophomore of the Year. After college, Danley signed NFL contracts with the Seattle Seahawks and the Indianapolis Colts.

Following his professional football career, Danley returned to Au-burn where he received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1993 and a master’s in education administration in 1996.

While completing his master’s degree, he spent two years as a graduate assistant in Auburn University’s athletic department. He worked in the compliance office where he provided support with NCAA and SEC legislative interpretations.

Once he completed his master’s degree, he moved to the SEC office where he spent two years working in compliance, cham-pionships and event management. He conducted student-athlete advisory committee meetings and provided NCAA and SEC legislation interpretations for member institutions.

He and his wife Stephanie have three children: Lawson, Trace and Landon.

The University’s arena has been renamed the Dunn–Oliver Acadome after two legendary Hornet basketball coaches, Charles Johnson “C. J.” Dunn and James V. Oliver.

Coach Dunn served as head basketball coach between 1934 and 1963, winning 298 games, the most wins of any Hornet coach. Dunn spent 46 years at ASU, joining the staff of what was then Alabama State Normal School after graduating from Morehouse College in 1945. He served in a number of capacities at the University, including baseball coach, instructor, dean of students and athletic director.

Dunn also served as commissioner of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association from 1970–72.

Coach Oliver also contributed greatly to ASU’s athletic program. He is credited with ushering in a new era of Hornet basketball when he became

head coach in 1978. A 1966 ASU graduate, Oliver led the Hornets for 16 years, compiling a 291–192 record and back–to–back Southwestern Athletic Conference Championships.

Oliver holds the honor of being second only to Dunn in ASU career wins with 291. Off the court, he was known as the man with a big heart who gave of his time and resources not only to help players, but also to reach out to those in the community who were in need.

The Dunn-Oliver Acadome is the home for Hornets basketball. The multipurpose center features a 7,400-seat basketball arena suitable for NCAA basketball tournaments, as well as classrooms, locker rooms for athletes, dressing rooms for entertainers, a drive-in storage facility, banquet facilities and laboratory space for physical education classes.

The sounds of whistles blowing, balls bouncing and sneakers squeaking again filled the air of the ASU Acadome when Alabama State University head basketball coach Lewis Jackson hosted his annual summer basketball camp for boys

In its fifth year, the event drew more than 120 participants, mostly middle school age and younger

“It’s exciting for us to have a chance to interact with so many young people,” said Jackson “We stress the fundamentals of the game, as well as the importance of having a strong work ethic and a team-first attitude ”

Alabama State University is coming off a season which saw them struggle at the first of the year and then pick up steam in the second half of the season, which culminated in a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tournament championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The Hornets started the season 6-16, only to get hot in the second half of the season winning 11 of the final 13 games to finish the season 17-18 overall (11-7 SWAC).

Head Coach Lewis Jackson returns for his seventh season at the head of his alma mater where he has fashioned a 97-92 record. He has led ASU to an NIT berth, two SWAC Regular Season Championships, two SWAC Tournament Championships and two NCAA Tournament berths. This season the road for that final destination has not changed.

“We look to win championships every year at Alabama State,” Jackson said. “We want to instill in our team a certain code to carry themselves like a champion all the time. We want them to walk like a champion, practice like a champion and play like a champion. If they do that we feel we have a shot at winning championships.”

The Hornets will have six players returning in the 2011-12 season that have seen a lot of action, with three of those being starters.

Ivory White (6-4, 195) returns for his senior season at an off-guard

position. The Greensboro, Ala. native was a starter most of the season, but was moved into a role off the bench midway through the season in what was one of the main personnel moves of the season.

White’s tenacious defense and solid offense gave the Hornets the boost off the bench they needed and once the move was made, the Hornets finished the season going 11-2 and winning the SWAC tournament championship. He averaged over seven points per game and led ASU averaging 5.4 rebounds per game. For his efforts, White was named to the All-SWAC team following the season.

Kenderek Washington (6-4, 200) also returns for his senior season. A native of Utica, Miss., Washington transferred to ASU from Pearl River Community College and became a solid off-guard scorer for ASU. He finished the season averaging nine points and over four rebounds per game. He led the Hornets with 64 three-pointers and should be even better this season with a year of SWAC play under his belt.

Shooting guard Tramaine Butler (6-2, 220) led the Hornets in scoring last season despite missing nine games due to injury. He is the team’s leading returning scorer averaging 11 points per game. He also led the team with 45 steals.

Jeff Middlebrooks (6-1, 170) was a part-time starter last season and his performance at point guard was solid as he finished the season leading the Hornets in assists with 97. The rising senior from Atlanta averaged five points per game and shot over 70 percent from the free throw line.

Adding to the depth off the bench will be guard Ryan Watts (6-0, 170). A junior from Conyers, Ga., he enters his third season at ASU after seeing action in 26 games last season at the off-guard position. He averaged 2.5 points per game.

“Guards will be the strength of this year’s program,” Jackson said. “We are a team that plays inside-out and we need the guards to provide us that type of play. We also rely heavily on our guards to lead the team and to lead us defensively since we are in a guard-heavy conference.”

Joining the six returners are 10 newcomers. Eugene Johnson is a 6-8 forward who is from Pleasant Grove, Ala. He played at Pleasant Grove High School.

Luther Paige comes to ASU from Ann Arbor, Mich. The 6-6 forward played at Father Gabriel Richard High School.

The coaching staff dipped into the recruiting land of South Carolina to sign 6-5 Dominique Miller. He is from Hopkins and played his high school ball at powerhouse Lower Richland High School.

Phillip Crawford (6-7, 210) brings a lot of energy to the program and will have a chance to compete at the forward position. He transfers to ASU from Pearl River Community College and hails from Mobile.

Shawntez Patterson is another big body the ASU coaching staff hopes can step in and provide a solid presence in the middle. The Detroit, Mich. Native stands 6-7.

Jonathan Jefferson is also 6-6 and transferred to Alabama State from Alabama Southern Junior College. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

Another incoming player the coaching staff has high hopes for is Joshua Mason. He will supply some solid support in the Hornets’ backcourt after transferring to ASU from the State College of Florida. He has two years of eligibility remaining.

The coaching staff has also signed Ralph Wilson out of Americus High School in Americus, Ga. Wilson is a true big body for the Hornets standing 6-10 and weighing 290.

Another big body that has signed with ASU is Devonte Neal. Like Wilson, he stands 6-10 and played at Ridgeway High School in Memphis, Tenn., where he was one of the top-ranked players coming out of the talent-rich area of West Tennessee.

Anthony Price (5-10, 180) will provide backup experience at a guard position. He transfers to ASU from L.B. Wallace Community College.

“We wanted to bring in some young guys, especially big guys, that we will have around four years,” Jackson said. “We are excited about the players we are bringing in. They all came to us from successful programs and we hope they can carry that success to the court with them.”

As usual, the Hornets will play a tough non-conference schedule. The Hornets will have road games at Marshall, Cincinnati, Jacksonville State, Evansville, Florida International, St. Louis, Clemson and Detroit.

“We always try to play a tough, brutal pre-conference schedule,” Jackson said. “We want to let the players play in front of hostile crowds. The older guys have been through this so we want the younger players to see how the older players respond to this type of pressure. They need to have this type of pressure so they know how to react once we get into our regular season conference games and into the tournament.”

Lewis Jackson will be returning for his seventh year as head basketball coach at Alabama State University. A legend as a player, the Wetumpka, Ala., native was named to lead his alma mater’s men’s basketball program in June 2005, catapulting the former player and assistant coach to the top of the program he helped build into a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) powerhouse.

Jackson, who had served as an assistant at ASU since the 2000-01 season before being named the head coach, has been integral to the team’s success. The Hornets won two SWAC Tournament championships and earned NCAA Tournament berths with those championships.

For the 2011-12 year, Alabama State will be coming off a season which saw them struggle the first half of the season and then pick up steam in the second, which culminated in the SWAC Tournament Championship and

another trip to the NCAA Tournament.

The 2009 season marked the third consecutive year that ASU finished with a winning record. The Hornets made it to the semi-final round of the SWAC tournament. Jackson also coached a pair of First Team All-SWAC players from that team- Menji Mundadi and Tremayne Moorer.

In 2008, Jackson guided the Hornets to a 22-10 mark and a 16-2 conference record en route to a second consecutive SWAC regular season crown. In addition, ASU captured the SWAC Tournament title earning the conference’s automatic NCAA Tournament berth.

In 2007, Jackson led Alabama State to the SWAC regular season championship with a 15-3 record, finishing the season 20-11 overall with an appearance in the NIT. The Hornets never lost back-to-back SWAC games that season and outscored their league opponents by more than 11 points per game.

Jackson began learning his up-tempo, full-court style as a graduate assistant at ASU under the late James Oliver Sr. Over the next five years, he served as a basketball instructor. In 1998, he coached The Challenge--an Amateur Athletic Union team that featured some of the top high school talent in the country, including stars Alvin Pettway and Tyrone Levett.

As strong as his coaching resume has been, Jackson’s credentials as a player are equally as impressive. While playing for Wetumpka High School, Jackson led his team to back-to-back state championships and was twice chosen as Most Valuable Player of the state tournament.

Jackson then selected ASU to continue his basketball career, becoming one of the best players in school history. After breaking into the starting lineup four games into his freshman season, he went on to score 2,203 points--ranking fourth on ASU’s all-time scoring list.

After his senior season in 1984, Jackson was named SWAC Player of the Year, Black College Basketball Player of the Year and a Black College All-American. He was drafted by the Golden State Warriors in the third round and received an invitation to try out for the United States Olympic basketball team. He would ultimately play professionally in Australia, Canada and the Philippines before retiring in 1990.

In 1999, Jackson was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame. A year later, he was selected for inclusion in the Alabama State University Hall of Fame. His number, 33, is retired by ASU, and Wetumpka High School retired both numbers Jackson donned, 34 and 35.

Jackson is married to ASU’s head women’s basketball coach, Freda Freeman Jackson. They have two children: Antron and Bianca.

Anthony Sewell enters his seventh season with the Hornets as an assistant basketball coach. He has been a key member of Lewis Jackson’s staff, helping to lead ASU to back-to-back SWAC regular season titles in 2007-08 and 2008-09. He has also seen the Hornets have appearances in the NIT Tournament and two NCAA Tournaments.

A 20-year coaching veteran, Sewell began his coaching career as a student assistant for Troy University (1987-1991), helping the Trojans advance to the NCAA Division II Final Four (1998) in addition to winning the Gulf Coast South Conference title (1991). During that time, the Trojans had an overall record of 88-31.

In 1991, Sewell became the assistant basketball coach for Pearl River Community College in Poplar, Miss., before transitioning to Luverne High School as the head basketball coach and assistant football coach. There, he led the basketball team to an 18-game

winning streak, earning him the Conference Coach of the Year Award. As Luverne’s assistant football coach, Sewell helped coach the team to a Class 2A State Championship (1998).

A year later, Sewell became the head boys’ basketball coach of Southside (Selma) High School (1998-2001), where he led the team to three Class 5A Area titles and second and third-place finishes in the state (1999, 2001). He left Southside with an overall record of 119-41.

Sewell then returned to Troy University as an assistant coach, becoming part of a staff that led the Trojans to their first NCAA Division I (2003) and NIT Invitation (2004) Tournament appearances. During his tenure, Troy finished with an overall record of 62-31 and won three Atlantic Sun Conference titles.

A graduate of Troy University with a degree in criminal justice, Sewell is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., the Black Coaches Association (BCA) and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).

One of the most prolific scorers in the history of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Steve Rogers again looks to put his imprint on the Alabama State University men’s basketball team.

Since 2005, Rogers has served as an assistant basketball coach for the Hornets, helping guide the squad to back-to-back regular season SWAC championships in 2008 and 2009 and a SWAC Tournament title in 2011.

After earning First-Team All-State honors as a senior at Montgomery’s Sidney Lanier High School, Rogers spent one season at Middle Tennessee State before returning to his hometown to play for the Hornets. In his three years at ASU, he was considered one of the best players to put on a Hornet uniform.

Rogers was a First-Team All-SWAC choice in each of his three seasons, earning Newcomer of the Year honors as a sophomore, SWAC Player of the Year and All-

American honors as a junior and senior. He finished his collegiate career with 2,471 points, making him the No. 3 scorer in ASU history one spot ahead of current head coach Lewis Jackson. In 1992, he was a second-round selection by the NBA’s New Jersey Nets.

Rogers played professional basketball internationally, spending 10 years in leagues in Greece, Argentina, Turkey and France. He returned to Alabama State in 2003, serving as the director of Football Operations during the 2003-04 seasons. In both seasons, the Hornets won the SWAC Eastern Division title, and in 2004 ASU won the SWAC league title.

Rogers has a degree in physical education from ASU and is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. He is the father of three children: Steven, Austin and Erin.

In 1920, eight men representing six colleges from the state of Texas met in Houston to discuss collegiate athletics and the many challenges facing their respective institutions

By the time the session concluded, they had founded an athletic league that went on to become one of the leading sports associations in the world of collegiate athletics, the Southwestern Athletic Conference

The Southwestern Athletic Conference’s current members include: Alabama A&M University (Huntsville, Ala ), Alabama State University (Montgomery, Ala ), Alcorn State University (Alcorn State, Miss ), Grambling State University (Grambling, La ), Jackson State University (Jackson, Miss ), Mississippi Val-ley State University (Itta Bena, Miss ), Prairie View A&M University (Prairie View, Texas), Southern University and A&M College (Baton Rouge, La ), Texas Southern University (Houston, Texas) and the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (Pine Bluff, Ark )

Former members of the SWAC include Bishop College (1920-56), Paul Quinn College (1920-29), Sam Houston College (1920-59), Texas College (1920-68), Wiley College (1920-68), Langston University (1931-57) and Arkansas AM&N (1936-70)

The founding fathers of the original “Super Six” were C H Fuller of Bishop College; Red Randolph and C H Patterson of Paul Quinn; E G Evans, H J Evans and H J Starns of Prairie View A&M; D C Fuller of Texas College and G Whitte Jordan of Wiley College

Paul Quinn became the first of the original members to withdraw from the league in 1929 When Langston University of Oklahoma was admitted into the conference two years later, it began the migration of state-supported institutions into the SWAC Southern University entered the ranks in 1934, followed by Arkansas AM&N in 1936 and Texas Southern in 1954

Rapid growth in enrollment of the state-supported schools made it difficult for the church-supported schools to finance their athletics programs, and one by one they fell victim to the growing prowess of the tax-supported colleges

Bishop withdrew from the conference in 1956, Langston in 1957 and Sam Houston in 1959, one year after the admittance of two more state-supported schools – Grambling College and Jackson College

The enter-exit cycle continued in 1961 when Texas College withdrew, fol-lowed by the admittance of Alcorn A&M in 1962 Wiley left in 1968, the same year Mississippi Valley State entered Arkansas AM&N exited in 1970 and Alabama State entered in 1982 Arkansas-Pine Bluff (formerly Arkansas AM&N) rejoined the SWAC on July 1, 1997, regaining full-member status one year later Alabama A&M became the conference’s 10th member when it became a full member in September 1999 after a one-year period as an affiliate SWAC member

Today, the SWAC ranks among the elite in the nation in terms of alumni playing with professional sports teams, particularly in the sport of football On the gridiron, the conference as been the biggest draw on the Division I-AA level of the NCAA, leading the nation in average home attendance for 19 of the 20 years the I-AA division has been in existence In fact, in 1994, the SWAC fell just 40,000 fans short of becoming the first non-Division I-A conference to attract one million fans to its home games

The SWAC’s ledger of alumni reads like a who’s who in college sports listings Representing the SWAC in pro halls of fame are football stars Lem Barney (Jackson State/Detroit Lions), Mel Blount (Southern University/Pittsburgh Steelers), Willie Brown (Grambling State/Oakland Raiders), Buck Buchanan (Grambling State/Kansas City Chiefs), Willie Davis (Grambling State/Cleve-land Browns and Green Bay Packers), Ken Houston (Prairie View A&M/Houston Oilers and Washington Redskins), David “Deacon” Jones (Mississippi Valley/Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers and Washington Redskins), Walter Payton (Jackson State/Chicago Bears), Jackie Slater (Jackson State/Los Angeles and St Louis Rams) and Charlie Joiner (Grambling State/Houston Oilers, Cincinnati Bengals and San Diego Chargers); baseball stars Lou Brock (Southern University/St Louis Cardinals) and Bill Foster (Alcorn State/Negro Leagues); and basketball star Willis Reed (Grambling State/New York Knicks)

Current championship competition offered by the SWAC includes races for men in baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, indoor track, outdoor track and field and tennis Women’s competition is offered in basketball, bowling, cross-country, golf, indoor track, outdoor track and field, soccer, tennis and volleyball

Intro to ncAA compliance:some Helpful Facts

onlY coaches and athletic department staff members are permitted to be involved in the recruiting process>Alumni, friends and “other representatives of athletics interest” (boosters) who are not employed by the university are not permitted to contact a prospect or members of the prospect’s family by letter, telephone or in-person for the purpose of soliciting their participation in the athletic program Alabama State faculty members are allowed to have contact with prospects, but only while on the campus during unofficial or official visits

A student athlete becomes a prospect ...>When the student athlete begins ninth-grade classes Before the ninth grade, a student athlete becomes a prospect if a college provides any financial aid or other benefits to the student athlete (or their relatives or friends) that the college does not provide to all prospective students

>A student athlete is considered a “recruited” prospect at a particular college if any coach or representative of the school’s athletics interest (booster or representative) approaches a student athlete or any member of their family about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college Activities by coaches or boosters that cause a student athlete to become a recruited prospect are:

- Providing the student athlete with an official visit- Placing more than one telephone call to the student athlete or any other member of their family- Visiting the student athlete or any other member of their family anywhere other than on the college’s campus
