Ridgeway, Ohio native Dean Corwin will begin his seventh full season broadcasting Royals’ bas-ketball.
A 1994 graduate of The University of Findlay (Ohio), he has done play-by-play broadcasting for the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons, the former AAA affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies, and for the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Yankees, the AAA affiliate of the New York Yankees. He was also the play-by-play voice for the Wilkes-
Barre/Scranton Pioneers of the Arena Football 2 for three seasons. You can listen to Royal basketball all season long at wusrfm.com.
Dean and his wife, Susan, reside in nearby Clarks Summit with their son, Gavin.
The Landmark Conference is a Division III athletics conference that was formed in the winter of 2005 in an effort to bring together colleges and universi-ties from the Mid-Atlantic region with similar philosophies regard-
ing the role of athletics as part of the overall collegiate experience. On November 30, 2006 it was announced that The Catholic University of America, Drew University, Goucher College, Juniata College, Moravian College, Susquehanna University and The United States Merchant Marine Academy had formed a soon-to-be-named Division III conference, with The University of Scranton becoming the eighth member in November 2006.
The conference's eight institutions are located throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, stretching from King's Point, N.Y. in the north to Washington, D.C. in the south. The geographic diversity creates even greater opportunity for growth for the Landmark's student-athletes. When the conference began competition in the Fall of 2007, it marked a new chapter in the history of each of the eight institutions as the programs grow together in their unique athletic and aca-demic enterprise.

1)HEAD COACH CARL DANZIG
Carl Danzig took over a University of Scranton men's basketball program steeped in tradition in 2001. In ten seasons, he's continued the work of his predecessors.
His overall record of 179-85 (.663) includes five NCAA tournament appearances (2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011), three Landmark (2008, 2009, 2011) and two Freedom Conference (2003, 2006) titles, and five 20-or-more win seasons (2003, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2011). His 2003 team also advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tourna-ment, while a 21-win season in 2006 earned him the Freedom Conference co-Coach of the Year award.
Individually, twelve of his players have earned all-Freedom/Landmark Conference honors, including Derek Elphick, the 2003 player of the year; Brian O’Donnell, the 2002 rookie of the year; and Zach Ashworth, the 2010 and 2011 player of the year. This past season, Ashworth become the first player under Danzig's tutelage to earn all-America honors by the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Ashworth (2009, 2010, 2011) and Randy Arnold (2006) have also been named all-Mid-Atlantic region by the NABC, while Elphick, O'Donnell, Ashworth, Tom Bicknell and Eli Londo have earned all-regional honors by D3hoops.com
Records and accomplishments, how-ever, don't always tell the whole story.
Hard hit by graduation following 2003’s 24-win season, Scranton suf-fered through a 5-20 campaign. Yet, Danzig continued to work hard, and his diligence paid off when the Royals won 20 games, a 14-game turn-around the following season. He built upon that progress by leading the Scranton to 21 wins in 2006 and 2009
and 19 victories in 2007 and 2008, including back-to-back Landmark Conference championships in 2008 and 2009 and another conference title in 2011.
Danzig’s ascension to his first head coaching job mirrored that of many in his profession. He worked his way up through the ranks by starting as a graduate assistant with the men's bas-ketball program at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, where he earned a Master of Arts degree in educa-tion before landing as an assistant at Bucknell University.
During his 11-year tenure, the Bison posted an overall record of 180-135 (.571) under head coaches Charlie Woollum and Pat Flannery, including seven winning seasons and 20-or-more wins twice (21 in 1992 and 23 in 1993). Bucknell also advanced to the Patriot League championship game four times during Danzig's tenure, los-ing to Fordham, 70-65, in 1992; Holy Cross, 98-73, in 1993; Navy, 76-75, in 1997; and Lafayette, 67-63, in 1999.
His major duties were recruit-ing, scheduling, scouting and film exchange. He also assisted in the coordination of the Bison summer camp program, community service projects and alumni activities and fund-raising efforts.
While an undergraduate at Baker University in Kansas, he was a two-year captain on the men's basket-ball team and finished his career as the second all-time leading scorer in Wildcat history with 1,732 points. A three-time all-Heart of America Conference selection and a first team all-district pick in 1987, he led the team in scoring and rebounding three times. He was also a four-year letter-man on the men's golf team. A native of Overland Park, Kansas, Carl and his wife, Lynette, a certified public accountant, are the parents of three sons: Ross, Ethan and Jackson. The family resides in Clarks Green, Pennsylvania.
Overall Record: 179-91 (.663)

1) Lewiston, New York native Joseph Mihalich is the newest addition to the Royal coach-ing staff.
He spent the past two seasons as a graduate assistant with the men’s basketball program at Villanova University, work-ing directly with the Wildcats’ director of basketball opera-tions, organizing and oversee-
ing team and summer camps, and helping out with academics, scouting and recruiting.
During his tenure, Villanova posted a 46-20 record, including two NCAA tournament appearances, under head coach Jay Wright. Mihalich has also worked numerous summer camps at Villanova (2007, 2008), Notre Dame (2006-2008), for Michigan head coach John Beilen (2006, 2008), Nazareth College (2006, 2007) and Niagara University (2005-2008).
Mihalich holds a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in math-ematics, cum laude, from Nazareth College in Rochester, New York, and a Master of Education degree from Villanova.
He was a four-year letterman on the basketball team at Nazareth. In his junior year, the Golden Flyers won the Empire 8 Conference champion-ship, advanced to the NCAA Division III champion-ships, and capped off the season with a 20-8 record under then head coach Mike Daley. Mihalich was twice named the team’s Hustle, Heart and Harmony award recipient, received Nazareth’s Emily Haskins Inspirational Athlete award as a senior, and was named to the Empire 8 President’s List for academic achievement in 2007. He also served as a student-athlete mentor.
Joe, the son of Niagara University head men's bas-ketball coach Joe Mihalich, resides in Scranton.
New Orleans native Greg Griffith will begin as second season as a volunteer assistant coach.
He graduated from Tampa Catholic High School in Tampa, Florida, where he let-tered in basketball, football, and track and field, and attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, where he
played one season of intercollegiate basketball.
For seven years, he served as head coach of Sumerfield, an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) team for boys under the age of 14 in Florida.
Greg married to Tashika Smith, director of multicul-tural affairs here at the university, last November.
The couple resides in Wilkes-Barre.

SEASON OUTLOOK
A change has certainly done The University of Scranton men's basketball program good.
The Royals ended their long-time affi liation with the Middle Atlantic Conference in 2007 and joined the newly-formed Landmark Conference. And in four seasons, Scranton has won three league titles (2008, 2009, 2011), fi nished runner-up on the other occasion (2010), and advanced to the NCAA Division III championships three times (2008, 2009, 2011). Scranton is also 78-31 (.716) during this span, includ-ing a 42-14 mark (.750) in the conference.
In looking ahead to the 2012 season, veteran head coach Carl Danzig faces quite a challenge, needing to replace one of the conference's most dominating players who was instrumental in the program’s aforementioned success.
That player is Zach Ashworth, a two-time Landmark Con-ference Player of the Year (2010, 2011) and 2011 second-team all-American by the National Association of Basket-ball Coaches (NABC). Not only will the Royals miss his 20.8 per game scoring average, but his remarkable ability to deliver much-needed leadership in clutch situations. A prime example was his performance in the 2011 Land-mark Conference championship game, where he scored 24 of his career-high tying 31 points in the second half as the Royals broke away from a two-point halftime lead en route to an 82-71 victory over Catholic University.
Whereas Danzig will surely miss Ashworth, he does have plenty of other weapons returning that should keep the Royals in the hunt for another Landmark crown.
First, there's senior guard Luke Hawk (Audubon, Pa./Meth-acton), who complimented Ashworth well by averaging nearly 16 points and 5.5 rebounds and who shot a team-leading 57 percent from the fi eld to earn fi rst-team all-con-ference honors a year ago. His ability to post-up opposing team's guards down low made Scranton's inside-outside game nearly unstoppable.
Then there's junior Travis Farrell (Middletown, N.J./Chris-tian Brothers Academy), who has developed into one of the top all-around guards in the conference. He earned second-team all-league honors after leading the Royals in rebounding (6.1) and steals (2.3) last season. He also shot over 48 percent from the fi eld, including 40 percent from beyond the 3-point arc, en route to averaging nearly 12 points per game. Joining him as returning starters are senior forward Matt Swaback (Kingston, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) and sophomore guard/forward Tommy Morgan (Greenlawn, Pa./Chaminade).
At 6-8, Swaback puts additional pressure on most oppo-nents with his ability to stretch defenses by knocking down perimeter jump shots. He connected on 37 percent of his attempts from beyond the 3-point arc and averaged nearly 10 points per game, but he will be asked to pick up his rebounding output this year.
Morgan had a solid freshman season cut short by a sea-son-ending injury against Susquehanna University on Febru-ary 11, but he still managed to start 17 of 21 games and average a steady 6.2 points and 3.5 rebounds.
Three other players—senior guard Dan Hilferty (Ardmore, Pa./Episcopal Academy), junior guard Tim Lavelle (Clarks Green, Pa./Scranton Preparatory), and senior forward Edmond O’Connell (Somers, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic)—also saw considerable action as key reserves. Hilferty is a tra-ditional point-guard who has plenty of game experience and is comfortable running the offense, while Lavelle’s late-season exploits added another dimension to the of-fense last season. He scored in double fi gures in his last three games, including 11 points in Scranton’s win over Catholic in the Landmark title game. O’Connell, a two-year letterman, provides much-needed bulk inside and should take some of the rebounding pressure off Swaback.
Other veterans battling for playing time include senior forward Nick Jaskula (Jenkintown, Pa./Jenkintown), and sophomore guards Michael Barr (North Wales, Pa./Lans-dale Catholic) and Michael Marchman (Blauvelt, N.Y./St. Joseph Regional).
Danzig’s recruiting class got off on the right foot when he convinced his eldest son Ross (Clarks Green, Pa.) to stay close to home. It got even better when Ross's teammate at Blair Academy (NJ), forward Mark Bevacqua (Lenox-ville, Pa.), decided to join him. Prior to his stint at Blair Academy, Bevacqua dominated the local high school scene, earning Player of the Year honors twice by the Scranton Times-Tribune.
After a highly successful career at Abington Heights High School, the younger Danzig averaged 13 points and fi ve rebounds per game at Blair Academy against top-notch prep competition last year. He has the talent and ability to challenge immediately for starting spot in the lineup. Ross’s teammate from Abington Heights, guard Justin Klingman (Clarks Summit), will challenge for playing time at point-guard. Rounding out the newcomers is Michael Fee (Richboro, Pa.), a 6-2 guard from St. Joseph’s Prepara-tory School in the Philadelphia area; Kyle Ranck (Lewis-burg, Pa./Lewisburg), a 6-5 transfer from Ithaca College; and 6-5 sophomore forward Jack McKenna (Netcong, NJ/Lenape Valley).
The Royals’ non-conference schedule should once again toughen them up for the conference play, along with an opportunity to face a Division I opponent when they unoffi cially open the season with an exhibition (non-count-ing) game against St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia on November 14.
Scranton will meet two NCAA tournament teams on the road—Ramapo (20-7) on November 28th and Cabrini (24-6) on December 17—and will play fi ve other non-conference teams that posted winning records last year, including renewing its rivalry with former Middle Atlantic Conference foes King’s College (15-10) and Wilkes Univer-sity (15-10) in the fi rst cross-county challenge to be held at nearby Marywood University in early January. The Royals will also host Centenary, SUNY-Maritime and New Paltz in the annual season-opening Radisson Invitational and will take on North Central (Ill.) and Westfi eld State (Mass.) at the Daytona Beach Classic in December.

The John ‘Les’ Dickman Award has been presented annually since 1954. It was first awarded to the out-standing player and later changed to the outstand-ing senior member of the Royals. In 2002, the award was changed back to the outstanding player. Les Dickman (above) was a native of Scranton whose life was tragically cut short in an industrial accident. He was a two-sport standout at the university. Below is the all-time list of Les Dickman Award recipients:

*Please note: During the 1999-2000 season, the MAC Freedom League regular-season champion earned an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. There was no post-sea-son tournament within the Freedom League. The cross over with the Commonwealth League teams was still in effect for the tournament, so the regular-season champions for the Freedom and Commonwealth leagues were declared the champions in order to receive automatic bids to the NCAA tournament.
