IDEAS FOR KINDERGARTEN ROUNDUP

To facilitate transition activities for students on the day of kindergarten registration:

Set up a room for registration with tables where parents can sit

while completing the required paperwork and an area for the prospective kindergartner to work with kindergarten materials such as manipulatives, blocks, puppet center, and/or a kindergarten table and chairs with coloring sheets and crayons, puzzles, or books.

Involve aides or clerks to help parents complete paperwork so that the kindergarten teachers can interact with the students.

Make special nametags for

students who come to registration.

Provide students and parents an opportunity to visit one or more of the kindergarten classrooms.

Display copies of letters written by current kindergarten students to new students telling them about their experiences in kindergarten.

Have current kindergarten students make a book, “What we do in kindergarten,” that can be available for new students to view.

PARENT TIPS: Ways to Help

Your Child Ease Into Kindergarten

Before School Starts

Set a routine for waking, eating breakfast, dressing, going to bed, and sleeping. Help your child express feelings (happy, scared, sad, etc.) to let you know how he/she feels about going to kindergarten. Take your child to visit the new school. Show your child the route to take from the classroom to the cafeteria, to the bathroom, etc. Remind your child that people at the school know how to get in touch with you and that someone in the office has your emergency numbers. Visit the park/playground at your child’s school. Feel confident about your school choice and let your child know how you feel. Set up a meeting with the school principal to ask any questions that you may have. Shop for practical clothing that your child can manage alone. Make sure that transportation plans to and from school are clear to your child.

After School Starts

Communicate with your child’s teacher (ask questions about lunch procedures, rest times, routines, etc., and tell your child). Try to be accessible, helpful, and available to your child’s teacher. If you have concerns, talk to your child’s teacher. Try to have a calm start to each day. Help empower your child. On the first day of school, allow your child to pick out his/her own clothes, lunch box, and backpack. Let your child decide what to have for lunch.

Things to Remember

Your child may be emotionally and physically exhausted for the first six weeks. Allow time for your child to adjust. Help your child learn the new “rules” at school and reassure that it is acceptable to make a mistake. Ask open-ended questions about their school day. “What was the best thing about school today?” “Who did you play with on the playground today?” Remember, even though you are eager to hear about the day, your conversations will be more productive if you wait until your child is ready to share the day with you.

A child’s first entry into kindergarten is an exciting new adventure for both child and parent. A child’s smile that says “learning is fun” is a great reward to both parents and educators. Remember, you are your child’s first and best advocate!

BOOKS THAT WILL EASE THE TRANSITION TO KINDERGARTEN

Do You Want to Be My Friend? by Eric Carle (Harper, 1987). This book shows how Little Mouse seeks and eventually finds a friend. Will I Have a Friend? by Miriam Cohen (Macmillan, 1967). During Jim’s first day at school, nearly everyone seems to find a friend. In the end, so does Jim. Ruby the Copy Cat, by Peggy Rathman (Scholastic, 1991). Ruby doesn’t know how to make friends at her new school, so she mimics what others do. She finally finds her own way to be friendly. Welcome Roberto! Bienvenido, Roberto! by Mary Sefozo (Follett, 1969). The story of Roberto’s first day at school is written in both English and Spanish. Annabelle Swift, Kindergartner, by Amy Schwartz (Orchard Books, 1988). Annabelle is getting ready to start kindergarten, so her older sister gives her some advice. Willy Bear, by Mildred Kantrowitz (Macmillan Child Group, 1989). A child prepares for the first day of school with his stuffed animal. When school time comes, he leaves the animal behind. Chrysanthamum, by Kevin Henks (Green Willow Books, 1991). Chrysanthamum is a mouse who loves her name. She learns to ignore the other mice who think her name is silly. Helpful Hints for Healthy Kids ATTENDANCE Children’s educational success depends upon their regular and consistent attendance at school. Please do not send your child to school sick. The best treatment for minor illness is at home. Keep your child at home if there is fever of 100 degrees or more. Please call the school before 10:00 a.m. to report the absence. This alerts the teacher if there is a need to send work home and also helps keep track of what illnesses are happening at the school. DIET Assist your child in staying healthy by encouraging him/her to eat a balanced diet from all the different food groups; remember that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Breakfast provides the needed energy fuel to begin the day and is available at most schools. REST A healthy child also needs to be well rested. Children 4-10 years old need approximately 10-12 hours of sleep; children over 10 years old need approximately 8-10 hours. MEDICATION If medication will need to be administered at school, please accompany your child to school to complete the necessary forms. All medication must be in the original, labeled container. Prescription medication must be for your specific child and not for another person. Over-the-counter medicine must also be in the original, labeled container, appropriate for the reason of administration and the dose must be age-appropriate. SCHOOL HEALTH TEAM Each school has a health team with scheduled hours who will assist you child with minor illnesses and injuries, but if the unexpected occurs and your child’s illness or injury results in him/her needing to go home, current daytime phone numbers and emergency contacts are needed. Below are some general guidelines that the health team follows:

1. Fever of 100.4 will require that you pick your child up from school. The child needs to be fever free without using any fever medicine before returning to school. Non-aspirin products, instead of aspirin, should be used to control fever because of the threat of Reyes Syndrome.

2. Coughing and sneezing spread germs. Please teach your child to cover his/her mouth and nose

and then follow with good hand washing.

3. If your child is vomiting, he/she needs to be kept at home. If the vomiting begins at school, you will be asked to pick up your child. If your child has fever and continues to vomit, please call your doctor.

4. Diarrhea, frequent, loose bowel movements, may be accompanied with fever and/or cramps, and it may follow an episode of vomiting. If your child has two or more loose bowel movements at school, you will be asked to pick him/her up. Your child will need to remain at home until 24 hours after the diarrhea has stopped. If your child has blood in the bowel movement, fever, or does not seem to be getting better, please call your doctor.

5. Usually the first signs of chicken pox are the same as a “cold” with coughing and fever. After 1-

2 days, many small red bumps begin to pop out on the chest and under the arms. A clear blister soon develops in the center of the bumps. New blisters will appear for 4-5 days, and then the fever will start going away. Your child needs to be kept at home until all of the bumps have scabbed-over, and there has been no fever for 24 hours. This usually takes 7 days after the first bump appears. The nurse needs to check your child before he/she can return to class. Use only non-aspirin medicine for fever. Call the school if your child has chicken pox. Please call your doctor also.

6. Eye Infections: often called Pinkeye, a red eye with a yellow or green discharge, may be

caused by a viral or bacterial infection. It usually lasts 4-7 days. The infection is easily spread from one person to another, and so frequent hand washing is the most important thing to control the spread of infection. A child with an eye infection should remain at home until the discharge is gone or you have a note from your doctor stating that the child may return to school.

7. Children with head lice, live bugs, will need to go home until treatment has been completed, and

all the lice have been removed. Your child will need to be re-checked for lice before he/she may return to class. Please accompany your child to the school office. If nits, lice eggs, are present, you will be notified with suggestions for resolving the problem. All nits will need to be removed within 5 days. Please check your child’s head weekly for signs of lice.

Please keep this information in a convenient place so you may refer to it during the school year. If you have any questions or want to discuss any health issue, please do not hesitate to call the school nurse.

UNOS CONSEJOS ÚTILES PARA MANTENER LA SALUD DE LOS NIÑOS

LA ASISTENCIA El éxito escolar de los niños depende de su asistencia constante y habitual a las clases. Por favor, no envie a si hijo a la escuela cuando está enfermo. El reposo en casa es el mejor remedio para una leve enfermedad. Su hijo debe quedarse en casa si tiene ás de 100 grados de temperatura. Por favor, llame a la escuela antes de las 10 de la mañana para avisarles de su ausencia. Así avisarán también de qué enfermedades hay en la escuela. LA ALIMENTACIÓN Ayude a su hijo a mantener la salud animándole a comer una dieta equilibrada de todos los grupos de alimentos: recuerde que el desayuno es la comida más importante del día. El desayuno le proporciona la energía necesaria para darle un buen comienzo al día y se sirve desayuno en la mayor parte de las escuelas. EL REPOSO Un niño sano también necesita suficiente reposo. Los niños de 4 a 10 años de edad necesitan dormir unas 10-12 horas; los niños mayores de 10 años necesitan dormir unas 8-10 horas. LOS MEDICAMENTOS Si hay que administrale algún medicamento a su hijo durante las horas de clase, por favor, acuda a la escuela con él para llenar las formas correspondientes. Todas las medicinas deberán estar en el envase de la farmacia con el etiquetado original. La medicina tiene que ser una que se ha recetado específicamente a su hijo y a nadie más. EL EQUIPO DE SALUD DE LA ESCUELA Cada escuela cuenta con un equipo de salud que atenderá a su hijo durante sus horas de consulta si tiene alguna enfermedad o herida leve, pero si ocurre algo imprevisto o si el niño se ve obligado a regresar a la casa por una enfermedad o herida, se necesitarán su número de teléfono durante el día y el de la persona a quién avisaremos en caso de emergencia. Aquí tiene unas normas generales que sigue el equipo de salud:

1. Si su hijo tiene una fiebre más de 100.4 grados, será necesario que Ud. Lo recoja de la escuela. Para que pueda volver a asistir a sus clases, su hijo tendrá que haber pasado libre de fiebre sin tomar ningún medicamento antipirético (para reducir la temperatura). Para evitar el síndrome de Reye hay que utilizar medicamentos sin aspirina para reducir la fiebre.

4. La diarrea, hacer del baño a menudo y muy suelto, puede presentarse con otros síntomas como fiebre y calambres o después de haber vomitado. Si su hijo hace diarrea más de dos veces, le pedirán que le recoja de la escuela. Su hijo necesitará quedarse en casa por 24 horas después de que se le quite la diarrea. Si Ud. Ve sangre en el excremento del niño, si tiene fiebre o no hay una mejoría notable, por favor, llame a su médico.

5. Por lo general, los primeros síntomas de la varicela (“viruela”) son los mismos que un

“resfriado” con tos y fiebre. Después de uno o dos días muchos granitos rojos empiezan a brotar en el pecho y debajo de los brazos. Poco después, aparecerá una ampolla translúcida en el centro de los granitos. Las ampollas seguirán brotando por unos 4-5 días má y después, se irá disminuyendo la fiebre. Su hijo tendrá que quedarse encasa hasta que se haya formado una costra en cada granito y haya pasado 24 horas sin fiebre. Por lo general, necesitará unos 7 días después de la aparición del primer granito para que esto suceda. La enfermera deberá revisar a su hijo antes de que pueda volver a asistir a sus clases. Sólo use medicamento sin aspirina para reducir la fiebre. Por favor, llame a la escuela y a su médico si su hijo tiene varicela.

6. Infecciones del ojo: Conjuntivitis catarral tener un ojo rojo con legañas amarillas o verdes

puede ser el resultado de una infección bacterial o vírica. Generalmente dura unos 4-7 días. Estas infecciones se transmiten fácilmente, por lo tanto, lavarse las manos es lo mejor para prevenir su contagio. Un niño que tiene un ojo infectado debe quedarse en casa hasta que desaparezcan las legañas o el médico le escriba un permiso para volver a las clases.

7. Los niños que tengas piojos, unos insectos que viven en el cabello, deberán permanecer en casa

hasta que les hayan dado tratamiento y se le hayan quitado todos los piojos. Su hijo tendrá que someterse a una revisión del cabello para que pueda volver a sus clases. Por favor, acompáñele a su hijo cuando vaya a la revisión. Si le encuentran liendres (los huevecillos del piojo) le explicarán cómo hay que eliminarlas. Será necesario eliminarlas dentro de un plazo de 5 días. Por favor, revisele la cabeza de su hijo cada semana para ver si tiene piojos.

Por favor, guarde esta información en un lugar accessible para que la pueda consultar Ud. Durante el año escolar. Si tiene preguntas o dudas al respecto de algún tema relacionado con la salud, no dude en llamar a la enfermera de su escuela.
