The York College baseball squad begins 2010 like it does mostseasons: high expectations and a great enthusiasm for the upcomingcampaign. York head coach Paul Saikia enters his 23rd campaign atthe helm of the Spartans coming off a 28-win season and an NCAATournament berth.

Saikia welcomes back seven everyday starters and a majority ofhis pitching staff as the Spartans are geared up to compete for theCapital Athletic Conference championship. That championship car-ries a new benefit this year as the conference now owns an NCAATournament automatic bid for the first time in conference history.

The Spartans have a number of versatile players that provideSaikia with the ability to mix and match lineups. It also gives theSpartan mentor exceptional depth for 2010.

INFIELD

The Spartans have experience all over the infield as all fourstarters return. Shortstop Rob Klinck begins his third year as a starterwhile Kyle Cook settles in at third base. Dustin Worthman will holddown second base while CT Stanley begins his second season as theSpartans’ starting first sacker. Senior Rick Shumway will also play abig role in the infield as he can fill in at second, third and short depending on the Spartans’ needs.

Klinck hit .312 with 38 runs scored, 19 RBI, 10 doubles, fourtriples and a pair of home runs last season. He is a steady shortstopwith a good arm and range. Klinck is one of the most experiencedSpartans with over 300 at-bats in his career. He will likely hit in thelower third of the lineup and gives that part of the order some runproduction potential.

Cook blossomed as a sophomore, hitting .376 with 37 runs scored,17 RBI, and seven doubles before having his season end early with awrist injury in the NC Wesleyan game. He will hit in the heart of thelineup as he provides York with the ability to be a key run producer.Cook will also hold down a spot in the Spartan pitching rotation.

Worthman played in 34 games as a freshman with time split between the designated hitter role and second base. He will take overfull time at second in 2010 and hit at the top of the lineup. He hit ablistering .448 in 96 at-bats with 25 runs scored, three doubles, atriple, and 14 RBI. He had a .500 on-base percentage while he alsostole nine bases. Worthman has improved defensively and is a hard-nosed player who brings toughness to the Spartan squad.

Stanley had a very productive sophomore year as he hit .291 witha team-high nine home runs. He drove in 38 with 29 runs scored and14 doubles. He has refined his approach at the plate that should provide him the ability to hit for a higher average without losing hispower. Stanley started 43 games and owned a .394 on-base percent-age. He is slated to hit in the four hole and will have a chance to be abig run producer for the Green and White. Stanley has also become avery reliable first baseman, giving his fellow infielders a big, athletictarget at first base.

Shumway comes to York from Division II Shippensburg where hewas a dynamic offensive player for the Red Raiders. In 2008,Shumway hit .380 with 52 runs scored, 10 doubles, five triples, and a

home run. He drove in 39 runs in addition to stealing21 bases. He is a very versatile infielder that will getplaying time at various positions in addition to gettingat-bats as the designated hitter.

“I like our infield a lot,” says Saikia. “We have ex-perience at every position, both in starting roles and indepth. I would not expect us to be flashy, but I do feelwe are solid and steady. I think some of our infieldershave grown a lot as leaders on our team as well. Thatbrings stability to a team that I think is very valuable.”

Junior Sean McCann provides depth at both cornerpositions while Adam Hegedus is a backup at secondfor the Green and White. Steve Bonitatibus also pro-vides depth for the Green and White at first base.

OUTFIELD

The Spartan outfield brings a good mix of players,as York must replace their lone lost starter in gradu-ated centerfielder Ryan Poff. Senior Matt Montimoves from third base to centerfield where he made asmooth adjustment during the fall season. Monti is agreat athlete with exceptional speed that can coverground in center. He hit .341 with 27 runs scored, 38RBI, 11 doubles, two triples, and a pair of home runsin 2009. He stole a team-high 13 bases and will likelyhit in the two spot for the Green and White.

Monti will be flanked in leftfield by senior MikeConnolly and in right by Joe Doyle. Connolly beginshis final year in the Green and White as a four-yearstarter. He hit .320 with 35 runs scored, 31 RBI, 12doubles, and three home runs. He drew 20 walks in2009 as he had a .400 on-base percentage. Connolly isin tremendous shape and will have the opportunity tofinish among the all-time Spartan offensive leaderswith a good season. Connolly has made strides as adefensive player as he boasts an accurate arm in leftfield. The left-handed hitting Connolly will hit in either the third or fifth hole depending on match ups.

Doyle played in 39 games last year and respondedby hitting .319 with 15 runs scored, 15 RBI, 10 dou-bles and a home run. He should flourish with extendedat-bats, as he is an outstanding athlete. Doyle is atough, competitive player who will likely see most ofhis plate appearances come from the lower half of theSpartan order.

Sophomore Steve Tretter provides Saikia with agreat option at any of the three outfield slots. He is agifted athlete that can really run and throw. He is anaggressive hitter who also could see time out of thebullpen. Junior Devin Harbold provides depth in rightand left field while junior Shaun Rutherford also playsin left for York.

“Like the infield we have veteran depth at everyspot. Monti is new to his position, but I feel he is ad-justing well,” states Saikia. “All in all I think we havea good talent and experience in the outfield – physicalplayers with some versatility.

PITCHING STAFF

The York pitching staff is headlined by senior aceJason Christenberry. The right-hander is coming off an8-3 year as he owned a 3.75 ERA in a team-high 84innings. Christenberry struck out 60 as opponents hit.260 against him. He made 14 starts while he alsoearned one save out of the pen for York. Christenberryis an aggressive pitcher that works quickly and chal-lenges hitters. He has worked on improving his changeup, giving him another weapon to attack his opponents.

Junior Andy Rosenzweig returns as York’s numbertwo starter after posting six wins as a sophomore.Rosenzweig made 13 starts and threw 66.2 innings. Hehas four quality pitches which he can throw consis-tently for strikes. Rosenzweig is a battler that givesYork experience near the top of the rotation.

Cook is slated to hold down a spot in the rotationwhile senior Chris Frankenfield moves to the rotationafter spending most of last year throwing out of thepen. Cook earned three wins and five saves last year.Cook spent most of last year doing his pitching as thecloser but this year he slides into the rotation. There isa possibility of him moving back into the closer role ifneeded by Saikia.

Frankenfield had a great junior year as he went 3-2with a 3.09 ERA in 46.2 innings. He is a competitiveand intelligent pitcher who battles and doesn’t beathimself with walks. Frankenfield made 18 appear-ances with five starts late in the year as he providesYork with another experienced arm in the rotation.

Saikia has a group of four right-handers who providehim spot starters or long bullpen relievers. Sopho-mores K.C. Beshore and Tom Moran join freshmenBrian Lusby and Joey Couch as candidates for joiningthe rotation. Beshore went 4-1 in 16 appearances andsix starts last year while Moran made six appearanceslast year. Lusby is a promising first-year Spartan thatcould make an impact as a freshman. Couch is a hardthrower that also has the ability to impact the York for-tunes.

The Spartans have a core of six pitchers that willlikely pitch exclusively out of the bullpen. Senior JeffBenchich and sophomore Brandon Ullom will bejoined by the freshmen foursome of Tretter, CourtlandSullivan, Brian Workman, and Josh Kohn in the pen.Benchich tossed 16.1 innings last year and will becounted on to provide leadership at the back end of thepen. Ullom threw limited innings as a freshman buthas worked hard to make himself into a factor forYork. Tretter, Sullivan, and Workman are three right-handers that will get chances to contribute from thepen. Kohn is the lone lefty on the Spartan staff in2010.

“As the team is in most aspects, we have a testedcore on the mound,” comments Saikia. “We should beable to start every game with a pitcher we feel canprovide the team a good chance to win. We have somegifted young pitchers as well—getting a little bit outof each of them will be the difference in whether wehave legitimate depth or not. I view them as our wildcard. No pun intended.”

CATCHING

The Spartans are in good hands behind the dish.Senior Jim Meehan comes back as the starter for theGreen and White. Meehan is an outstanding defensivecatcher who blossomed as the starter last year. Meehanhit .268 with 13 RBI and 10 runs scored but the coach-ing staff expects him to improve after a good fall cam-paign that saw him hit the ball with authority all overthe field. Four freshmen provide Meehan with capableback up. Justin Cohen is on track to be Meehan’s mainunderstudy. Cohen is a vocal, aggressive player whocould also get some designated hitter at-bats through-out the season. Nicholas Long, Jimmy King, andMichael Doran give the coaching staff an outstandingcore of young and talented catchers that provide Yorkwith a bright future behind the plate.

“We have an unusual assembly of catchers this year- a senior with a ton of experience and group of fresh-

men who are talented but certainly still in the develop-ment stage. My goal this year is to get as much as wecan from Jimmy and then look for every opportunitywe can to get the freshmen some experience,” statesthe Spartan mentor.

Saikia is excited to get out on the field with histeam.

“I think we have a chance to be a serious contenderin the CAC and the South Region. We scratched andclawed our way through last season. Hopefully our returners can feed on that experience and play a yearmore matured. I’m curious to see what we can getfrom some of our younger guys. If our veterans playlike veterans and we get a reasonable contributionfrom our bench, we could be pretty good,” remarksSaikia.

Much like all Spartan baseball seasons, the Greenand White face a tough regular season slate in prepara-tion for the CAC Tournament and NCAA Tournamentplay.

“The CAC gaining an AQ will definitely raise theintensity level of our conference season and tourna-ment. Not to say that it was ever lacking, but it’s goingto be an all-out war now. Every game we play thisyear will be counted by the NCAA as a regional game,so there really is no letup. It’s going to be a long, hardbattle,” says Saikia.

The Spartans open their 2010 schedule on February26 when they travel to Atlanta, Georgia to participatein the Emory University Rawlings Southern Classic.York plays four games in the tournament before play-ing at Randolph-Macon on March 2 on the way homefrom Atlanta. The Spartans are scheduled to open theirhome season on March 5 against Mary Washington.

JAQUET fiELdHOmE Of THE YORK cOLLEGE BASEBALL TEAm

Jaquet Field is the beautiful home of the York College baseball program. The facility underwent ahuge facelift during the summer of 2001 as the outfield was leveled, dugouts installed, and a pressbox was constructed, making the facility one of the best on the east coast. The playing surface is one of the best the Spartans will play on all year. The coaching staff andplayers dedicate a great deal of time in making their home facility a great home field for the Greenand White. The facility features a 14-foot high right field wall, a double cage in right centerfield and bullpensdown each foul line. The press box features a concession stand in the lower level, serving Spartanfans during the season. The outfield dimensions are 330 in left, 395 in center, and 315 down the rightfield line.

york college overview York College of Pennsylvania is a private-sector, independent institution of higher education, which focuses on offeringbaccalaureate degree programs in the arts and sciences, business administration, education, public affairs, and nursing. Stu-dents may also enroll in courses leading to the associate degree and master’s degree. The College draws its 4,600 full-time undergraduate and 1,500 part-time and graduate students from some 30 states and36 foreign countries. Typically, 50% of York’s freshmen hail from Pennsylvania; 30% from New York and New Jersey; and15% from Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia, and Connecticut. Others come from states up and down the East Coast andfrom abroad. Most of York’s part-time and graduate students reside and are employed in the greater York Area. The College occupies a 190-acre, park-like campus, just beyond the York city (pop. 50,000) limits, in the rolling hills ofthe south central part of the state. Close to the heart of “Pennsylvania Dutch” country, York is one hour from Baltimore; twohours from Philadelphia or Washington, DC; and four hours from New York City, Pittsburgh, or Richmond. Nearly half ofits undergraduate students reside in college housing in the vicinity of the campus. York College envisions itself as a center of affordable academic excellence and has received favorable national recogni-tion for its success in offering a higher education program of high quality at a tuition rate substantially lower than the ratescharged by institutions of similar type, scope, and distinction. York’s effective control of tuition costs stems principallyfrom the long-term, generous support of the College by its friends in the York community and its alumni. This support hasprovided both superior debt-free physical facilities and permanent endowment resources sufficient to fund institutionalscholarships and financial aid for needy students. York uses this fiscal strength in turn to provide a kind of “scholarship” toeach of its students in the form of relatively modest charges for tuition and campus housing. York College is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges andSchools and has specialized accreditation for its business, nursing, allied health, and recreation programs. York College isproud of its ongoing efforts in gender equity. As per the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act of 1994, information regardingYCP’s gender equity statistics is available for review in the office of the Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation. Stu-dents can request a copy of the report from the Assistant Dean for Athletics and Recreation.

the grumbacher Sport & Fitness center The York College campus officially grew on April 29, 2006, as the College unveiled the Grumbacher Sport & FitnessCenter to the public. This 160,000 square foot complex is the centerpiece for student life on the College’s West Campus.Bordered by McKay Hall and Grantley Hall, and a quadrangle of new dormitories, the Center features the Charles WolfGymnasium, a 1,712-seat arena hosting varsity competition in men’s and women’s basketball, volleyball, and wrestling.Other features include an eight-lane competitive pool with instructional areas and 1- and 3-meter diving boards, a three-court field house, spacious locker room facilities, and a state-of-the-art fitness area that spreads out over 7,600 square feet. Two new Sport Turf fields sit directly south of the Grumbacher Center. Graham Field is home to the men’s and women’ssoccer and track & field teams while Kinsley Field is the home of the field hockey, men’s lacrosse, and women’s lacrosseteams.
