MICHAEL ANTONINI - 18TH ROUND PICK NEW YORK METS(BOBCAT 2006-07)“I chose to come to GCSU mainly because it was a great opportunityfor me to come down to a warm climate program and have thechance to compete for valuable innings for a nationally-ranked team.GCSU helped prepare me for the next level of baseball and is one ofthe reasons that I have gotten the chance to follow my lifelongdream--playing professional baseball. Academically, GCSU was a great fit for mecoming from a JuCo because the campus size was not overwhelming. I made newfriends and got to experience the southern way of life. I enjoyed my two years atGCSU and will continue to support the Bobcat program.

CHRISTIAN CASTORRI - FREE AGENT SIGN PITTSBURGH PIRATES(BOBCAT 2005-06)“I chose GCSU for the winning program and quality college life. The baseball and life lessons I learned from the coaching staffaboslutely helped elevate me to the next level and prove to bevaluable ever day. I came in not knowing anyone at GCSU and left

with a new family.”

non-conference games in 2009, going 21-5, includ-ing 20 wins in the final 21 non-PBC contests.

After the nail-biting victory to open the season, theBobcats dropped three at No. 2 Tampa, and sufferedanother dissapointing loss at home to Philadelphia3-1. Georgia College then rattled off 10 straight victo-ries, including four scoring double-digit runs.

A trip to Georgia Southwestern saw two losses inthree games to open the Peach Belt Conference(PBC) slate on a sour note. The Bobcats respond-ed again with an eight-game win streak, includ-ing five straight over nationally-ranked competi-tion. The Bobcats swept No. 7 North Georgia inimpressive fashion at Kurtz Field, allowing atotal of nine runs over the three games, and werefiring on all cylinders.

PBC road woes continued, as the Bobcats droppedtwo of three at USC Aiken, but took a pair of homeseries from Lander 2-1 and from No. 23 FrancisMarion 2-1. The Bobcats took two of three at a strug-gling Columbus State team, then dropped two ofthree at UNC Pembroke. With a PBC title on the line,

Bobcat fans had to know something special was on theway from the very first game of the season. TrailingErskine 5-3 heading into the bottom of the eighth,Brooks Robinson's two-out single plated Derek Johnsfor a 5-4 game, getting the Bobcats a little closer.

In the ninth still down one, Kyle Allen singled andstole second. With two out, Steve Muoio ripped a sin-gle to center for a 5-5 tie. After a walk and a hit bats-men loaded the bases, pinch hitter Danny McCorkelldropped down a perfectly-placed bunt to bring homethe game-winning run. It was just the first game of theseason, and the Bobcats already had 10 stolen basesand plenty of hooked fans for the remainder of the2009 season.

In the 2009 season as a whole, the 40th anniversary ofGeorgia College baseball, the ‘Cats had seven victorieswhen trailing after seven innings, including five winswhen down after eight innings. Head coach Tom Cartyknew he could count on a never-give-up attitude fromhis young but experienced squad, featuring six return-ing positional starters and two returning arms to thethree-man starting rotation. Meeting up with a hot UNC Pembrokesquad, the Bobcats fell victim to the upset, like manyother teams in the tournament, falling 15-6 to theBraves, due in large part to a season-high seven errorsfor Georgia College.

The Bobcats picked up an at-large bid to the NCAASoutheast Regional Tournament, making it eight tripsto the NCAA postseason for Georgia College baseball, including three in the last four seasons. Dreams of aCollege World Series trip came to a close in two loss-es, however. The Bobcats fell 7-5 to No. 21 Catawba, then dropped a 14-9 loss to eventual championBelmont Abbey.

Peach Belt Conference

Now entering its 20th year of existence in 2009-10, thePeach Belt Conference has become one of the elite Division IIconferences in the nation. Since its inception in 1990-91, thePeach Belt has developed a consistent history of excellencewhich continues to this day with 28 national championships and25 national finalist

Starting with only two championships in 1991, in men’s andwomen’s basketball, the conference has expanded to 13 champi-onship sports with the addition of women’s golf in the fall of2009.

The conference traces its roots back to November of 1988when 11 schools first met in Greenville, S.C. to form a Division IIconference. Following a second meeting on Dec. 3, 1989, five ofthose 11 schools, plus two others, formed the Peach Belt andbegin play in fall 1990.

The Peach Belt was less than a year old before capturing anational championship. The Columbus State golf team took thehonor by winning the 1992 national crown, the first of three golfchampionships the Cougars own. One year later, the Landermen's tennis team began its record-breaking run of eightstraight national titles, the first PBC dynasty. Since then, USCAmen's golf has won three straight national titles from 2004-06while AASU women's tennis has captured four titles overall.

The 2008-09 season was among the conference’s mostmemorable. The Armstrong Atlantic State men’s and women’stennis teams both won their respective national championships– for the second year in a row; a feat only done once before incollege tennis. In addition, the Augusta State men’s basketballteam became the first to make back-to-back trips to the NCAAElite Eight, the Armstrong Atlantic became the first PBC volley-ball team ever to advance to the Elite Eight and the NorthGeorgia softball team was ranked #1 in the nation and reached

the World Series. The seven charter members of the conference were

Armstrong Atlantic State University, Columbus State University,Francis Marion University, Georgia College & State University,Lander University, USC Aiken and USC Upstate. The namePeach Belt Athletic Conference was adopted in January of 1990and modified to Peach Belt Conference in May of 2000.Augusta State joined the conference in 1991 and UNC Pembrokebecame the ninth member on July 1, 1992. They were followed byKennesaw State University on July 1, 1994, Clayton StateUniversity on July 1, 1995 and the University of North Florida onJuly 1, 1997. Kennesaw State and North Florida departed for theDivision I ranks in 2005, USC Upstate did the same in 2007, andthe conference welcomed in North Georgia College & StateUniversity in 2005 and Georgia Southwestern State Universityin 2006.

For 2009-10, the Peach Belt has grown once again with theaddition of the University of Montevallo and Flagler College, giv-ing the PBC 13 members, the most the league has ever had. Theaddition of the two schools returns the PBC to the state of Floridaand expands the league into Alabama for the first time.

David Brunk was named the second PBC commissioner inMay of 2007. Brunk replaced Marvin Vanover, who was the firstPBC commissioner from 1991 to 2007. Brunk is charged withcontinuing the strong growth of the conference as its second erabegins.

The conference currently holds championships in 13 sports, six for men and seven for women. They are men’s and women’scross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s andwomen’s basketball, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, soft-ball and men’s and women’s golf.

spent parts of five sea-

sons pitching for several

major league ball clubs.

During the 1992 season

he pitched in more than

70 games between

Nashville and Cincinnati.

His 18 saves at Nashville in 1992 set a new Nashville club record for a single season. After being

drafted by Cincinnati following his senior year at Georgia College, Milton was used exclusively in

relief by the Reds organization. Prior to the 1994 season, Milton was released by the Reds and

signed as a free agent with the Atlanta Braves. He was picked up midway through the 1994 season

by the Seattle Mariners and in 1995 he was in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. Milton was a pitching coach with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays for

two years. He is now scouting for the Devil Rays in the Southeast.

After only four years at the NCAA Division IIlevel, Georgia College earned its first trip to theCollege World Series and nearly won the nationalchampionship. Led by an explosive offense andsolid pitching and defense, the 1995 GeorgiaCollege baseball squad won the South AtlanticRegional tournament and advanced to the NCAAII College World Series in Montgomery, AL. In theseason, the Colonials finished with a 49-19-1 over-all record and posted a 17-6 ledger in PBAC play.In the PBAC tournament, for the second year in arow, the Colonials lost in the championship. In1994, the title was lost to Columbus College (4-3)and in 1995 it was lost to Kennesaw State (10-6). Although these were toughlosses, the ’95 Colonials knew they had more baseball to play. Thereremained a two-game series with The Citadel and a bid to the NCAATournament.

In 1984 and 1985 the Georgia College baseball team advanced to theNAIA College World Series. This trip to the NCAA II RegionalTournament, however, was the first ever for the Colonial baseball program. The three-team tournament was hosted by Kennesaw State College, andthey were the number one seed. Wingate College (from North Carolina)was the number two team and Georgia College was seeded third in thedouble elimination playoff. After an opening round (9-5) loss to WingateCollege, GC had to immediately play Kennesaw State who, at that time, was ranked number one in the country. Tournament MVP David Curleywent nine strong innings as the Colonials thumped their hosts 6-3. The bigoffensive blow was delivered by GC’s Mike Terceira who launched a tower-ing Grand Slam.

The next day, Wingate eliminatedKennesaw State, setting the stage for the finalround of the tournament. All GC had to do wasdefeat Wingate twice and they would advance tothe CWS. “Our approach was simple; take it onegame at a time, win the first one and then seehow Wingate handles the pressure in the second,”said Coach Steve Mrowka after his Colonialsswept the final two games of the regional tourna-ment.

In the first game, GC rode the clutchpitching of Kevin Dye and Kevin Mobley to defeatWingate 4-3. The following day was a special day

for the Colonials; according to Coach Mrowka, “we played with confi-dence and determination, the guys were determined to bring home thechampionship and advance to the series.” In game two, David Curleywas once again simply sensational. In 6.1 innings, he held Wingate tothree runs on three hits, before giving way to sophomore closer Kevin‘Hoss’ Mobley who, for the second straight day, slammed the door onWingate’s high-powered offense.

THE COLLEGE W ORLD SERIESPATTERSON FIELD, MONTGOMERY , AL

In the CWS, the squad played possibly the best baseball in the historyof the GC baseball program as they impressively swept three straightgames to reach the championship. In the three victories, the Colonialsout scored their opponents 38-14. In the title match-up, perennial powerFlorida Southern proved they were the best team in NCAA II as theyblanked GC 15-0, in front of a national audience, as the game was tele-vised by SportSouth and other affiliate Sports Channels.

Coach Mrowka on his team’s CWS performance: “. . .I have neverseen a team improve as much as this team; going into the national cham-pionship game we were playing as well as we could play. Unfortunately,we did not play well against a very talented Florida Southern team.”
