2010 SEASON PREVIEW

The 2010 edition of the Southern New Hampshire Universitysoftball team will be a youthful one. A quick scan of the Penmen rostershows seven freshmen on the 15-player roster. The freshmen have a tallorder in replacing a senior class of 2009 that won 85 games, making themthe winningest class in program history.

However, fifth-year head coach Deb Robitaille does have eightplayers returning from last season’s team that posted a 21-24 record,including a 17-11 Northeast-10 league mark. SNHU qualified for the NE-10 Tournament for the third time in four seasons, losing a heartbreaking1-0 game to Merrimack in the first round. The rise of the Penmen programhas not gone unnoticed, as it is picked fifth out of 16 teams in the Northeast-10 preseason poll.

SNHU boasts three seniors, all of whom will be serving as tri-captains; Sammi Chickering (Hillsboro, N.H.), Andrea Clausi (Kingston,N.Y.) and Melissa Pessotti (Burlington, Mass.).

PITCHINGSNHU’s three pitchers on the roster are all returners from last

season. Junior Kelsey Griffin (Scarborough, Maine) had a big impactin the circle for the Penmen last season, her first at SNHU after transferringfrom Iona. Griffin earned Northeast-10 Second Team All-Conferencehonors after posting a 1.65 ERA and striking out 89 in 89 innings of work.She ranked fifth in the NE-10 in ERA and finished the season with a 6-4record.

Sophomore Amanda Barton (Franklin, N.H.) made eightappearances last season and played in a total of 35 games, mostly startingin the outfield. Barton threw a complete-game five hitter against Molloy forher first collegiate win last season and hurled five innings of scorelessrelief in a key late-season win over Saint Rose. Classmate Jen Garloff(Lebanon, Pa.) made five pitching appearances and posted a 2.44 ERAand a .216 opponent batting average with a 1-1 record.

CATCHERWith the graduation of Michelle Maranto, who started 41 games at

catcher last season,the Penmen will lookto someone else tofil l the role.Chickering andjunior ElenaAnderson (Salem,Wisc.) are the tworeturning catcherson the roster.

Chickering, athree-year memberof the program, hasplayed in a limitedrole over her firsttwo seasons,making the roster asa pitcher as asophomore beforeswitching to catcherlast season.Anderson served asthe team’s utility

player last season, starting 40 games at five different positions. Shebatted .272 with three home runs and 13 RBI.

Two freshmen will also vie for time behind the plate, JessicaDouillette (Concord, N.H.) and Cristy Jenkins (Hudson, Mass.).Douillette, who can also play in the infield, was an All-State selection as asenior at Concord HS and helped lead the Crimson Tide to a Class L title.She batted .270 with 27 RBI. Jenkins, who will also compete in theoutfield, led Hudson HS to four straight league titles and a Massachusettsstate title as a sophomore. She served as team captain for the Hawks asa senior.

INFIELDSouthern New Hampshire returns four players who started in

the infield last season, Clausi, Pessotti, Anderson and Melissa Vitagliano(Bedford, N.H.).

Clausi, who split time between third base and serving as thedesignated player, played in 32 games last season and started 29 times.Although she had a down year offensively in 2009, she enters her seniorseason second in program history in home runs (15) and seventh in RBI(47).

Pessotti played in 40 games and was in the starting lineup 36times last season. She ranked second on the team with 19 runs driven inwhile her four home runs were fourth on the team. She also committedjust five errors in 161 chances at first base.

Vitagliano started 43 games in her first season with the Penmenin 2009, primarily at shortstop. The former Manchester West standoutbatted .267 with a team-high seven home runs, while knocking in 18 runs.Her seven round-trippers tied a single-season school record.

Douillette and Kelsea Cheney (Abington, Mass.) are thenewcomers to the infield. Cheney batted .576 as a senior at Abington HSand set a single-season school record with 21 RBI. She also served asteam captain.

OUTFIELDMost of SNHU’s youth is located in the outfield, where the only

returners are Griffin and Barton. Five freshmen will look to crack thelineup in the outfield, including Jenkins, Jessica Berardi (Raynham,Mass.), Nicole Newell (Abington, Mass.), Kate Stanley (Kingston,Mass.), and Danielle Watts (Chelmsford, Mass.).

Berardi was a team captain at Bridgewater-Raynham RegionalHS and earned the team’s Defensive Award. Newell was the 2009Student-Athlete of the Year at South Shore Regional HS and was a two-time Mayflower League All-Star in softball. Stanley batted .529 as asenior at Silver Lake Regional HS and led the Lakers to a 16-4 record.She was a three-time Brockton Enterprise All-Star. Watts batted .436 as asenior at Chelmsford HS and led the Lions to a 15-7 record while beingnamed All-Conference.

SCHEDULEThe Penmen open up their season with a 14-game swing on

the road starting March 20 that sees them play six East Coast Conferenceteams as well as Post. SNHU’s home and Northeast-10 opener is slatedfor March 30, when it hosts Bentley.

For the second straight year, the Penmen will play a homedoubleheader under the lights, as it entertains Southern Connecticut StateUniversity in a 6:00 twinbill Saturday, May 1. Last season, in the program’sfirst-ever home night contests, SNHU split a doubleheader with nationally-ranked and eventual league champion Le Moyne.

THE COACHING STAFF

DEB ROBITAILLEHead Coach

Deb Robitaille begins her 10th seasonwith the Southern New Hampshire Univer-sity softball team, and her fifth as head coach.She was named head coach on May 31,2005. Robitaille spent six years as assistantsoftball coach before being promoted to headcoach. She also serves as assistant women’ssoccer coach at the University.

Over her first three seasons, Robitaille has posted a record of 85-81 and garnered Northeast-10 Coach of the Year honors in both 2006 and2007. In 2006 she guided the Penmen to their first-ever appearances inthe NE-10 and NCAA Tournaments, while in 2007 the Penmen won aschool-record 24 games and made a second consecutive trip to the NE-10 tourney. The Penmen made their third trip to the NE-10 Tournamentin Robitaille’s four seasons in 2009.

Robitaille is a 1984 graduate of Manchester Memorial High Schoolwhere she was a member of the girl’s soccer team and collected first-teamAll-State honors as a senior. She also participated in the Lion’s Cup All-Stargame following her senior year.

The UNH-Manchester graduate served as girl’s junior varsitysoccer coach at Memorial High School from 1986 to 1995, before beingnamed head girl’s soccer coach at Concord High School in 1996. She spentthree years at Concord and also served as goalkeeping coach at KeeneState College during her final season with the Crimson Tide.

Robitaille has also coached in the Manchester South Junior SoccerLeague and the U14 Granite State Travel League.

ROGER HEBERTAssistant Coach

Roger Hebert begins his 11th season asassistant softball coach at SNHU. He haspreviously served as an assistant coach atDaniel Webster College, Memorial HighSchool and Hooksett Junior High School.

Hebert was a long-time head coach ofRoger’s Renegades, an over 30 softball

team, and led the team to three national titles, two national runner-up finishesand one national third place finish.

MEL KEELERAssistant Coach

A familiar face to the followers of SNHUsoftball, Mel Keeler begins her sixth seasonas an assistant coach.

One of the top players in the history ofthe program, she was a three-year memberof the team (2002-04) and led the Penmento 49 victories and a then program-record 19wins as a senior. A two-time SNHU Female

Athlete of the Year and one-time Northeast-10 Conference all-starselection, she established the season-record for wins (15), earned runaverage (0.86) and strikeouts (135) as a junior and closed out her careeras the program’s career-leader in strikeouts (300) and earned runaverage (1.21). She also finished tied for the school-record in career winswith 32. Not to be overlooked, she also owns a .301 career batting averageand ranks sixth among the program’s all-time leaders in career hits with 105.Keeler was inducted into the SNHU Athletic Hall of Fame in January, 2010.

She spent one year at NH Technical Institute before enrolling at SNHUand collected NSCAA All-America honors in her one season with NHTI.

Keeler is a 1998 graduate of Concord (NH) High School and earnedClass L all-state honors in both softball and volleyball. She was also namedClass L Player of the Year for softball as a senior.

JEN WILLIAMSAssistant Coach

Jen Williams is in her first season as anassistant coach at SNHU.

Jen joined the SNHU coaching staff thisfall, after two years assistant coaching andobtaining her Masters degree at Smith Col-lege in Massachusetts. Jen played forMiddlebury College, and has also played

and coached overseas on the Swedish National Softball Team, where sheacted as interim pitching coach for the summer of 2008.

TARA MORIARTYAssistant Coach

A former standout for four seasons withthe Penmen, Tara Moriarty enters her sec-ond season as an assistant coach.

Moriarty played for the Penmen from2004-07 and garnered Northeast-10 All-Conference accolades three times, includingbeing named to the Second Team twice. Atwo-year captain for SNHU, Moriarty ranks

fourth in career hits with 125 and third in career home runs with 11.Moriarty, a native of Randolph, MA, was a two-time All-Conference

selection in softball at Randolph High School.

LOCATIONSouthern New Hampshire University is located in an area

that gives students the best of both worlds. The culture andfacilities of urban areas are close by, while the beauty andrecreational diversity of the New Hampshire north country iswithin a short drive. The campus sits on the edge ofManchester, a city of 100,000 people and New Hampshire’sbusiness center. It is home to museums, theatres, retailcenters and quality restaurants. Convenient interstate high-ways bisect Manchester’s bustling perimeters and air serviceconnects Manchester with all major cites in the UnitedStates.

Just an hour south is Boston, with all of its culturaladvantages and activities. Boston is home to the world-classMuseum of Science and Fine Arts Museum, as well as theBoston Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics and New England Patriots. Tothe north, students have access to the wilderness andrecreational areas of the White Mountains and the LakesRegion. The White Mountains offer some of the best hiking inthe country and the best skiing in New England.

The location of the campus enables SNHU to providestudents with access to the kinds of recreational and culturalopportunities that add greatly to the experience of going tocollege. Finally, New Hampshire ranks 48th nationally inviolent crime and there is a comprehensive security programin place at SNHU which has produced a remarkable safetyrecord.

Atthe end of Donati Drive turn right onto BicentennialDrive. At the first stop sign turn right onto North RiverRoad. SNHU is 1/4 mile on the left.

Heading North ViaEverett Turnpike (Route 3)

Take Route 3 to I-293 North to Exit 6. Cross theAmoskeag Bridge and turn left at the first intersectiononto Elm Street. Stay on Elm Street for 1 mile then turnleft onto Bennington Road. Go one block and turn rightonto North River Road. SNHU is 1.5 miles on the left.

ATHLETICSThe rich tradition of athletics has long been the source

of pride for the family and friends of Southern New HampshireUniversity. Since the glory days of the Greater Boston SmallCollege Conference, to the present status as a NCAA DivisionII power, the Penmen have maintained a level of excellencethat is second to none.

SNHU is a member of the National Collegiate AthleticAssociation and the Northeast-10 Conference. An originalmember of the now-disbanded New England CollegiateConference, SNHU became a member of the Northeast-10Conference prior to the 2000-01 academic year.

Men’s teams are fielded in baseball, basketball, crosscountry, golf, hockey, lacrosse, soccer and tennis. Women’steams include basketball, cross country, lacrosse, soccer,softball, tennis and volleyball. Cheerleading is also offered asa co-ed varsity sport.

Numerous individual and team achievements in recentyears have brought SNHU both regional and nationalrecognition. Topping the list of recent success stories is the1989 NCAA Division II National Championship in men’s soccer.Consistently ranked among the top programs in the country,the men’s soccer team has participated in 14 NCAA Tournamentssince 1986 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament nationalchampionship game in 2002. In addition, the women’s soccerteam claimed seven of a possible 13 ECAC Division II titles from1984 to 1996 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1997and 2003.

The men’s basketball team, a long-time New Englandpower, has participated in 16 NCAA Tournaments since 1980.The Penmen have claimed six NCAA Regional titles andadvanced to the Division II Final Four in 1993 and 1994. Thewomen’s basketball team advanced to the NCAA Tournamentin 1988 and 1990 and captured the ECAC Division II title in 1991.The SNHU hockey team participated in the final NCAA DivisionII Championship Series in 1999 and has advanced to a post-season tournament each of the last 11 seasons.

The golf team claimed back-to-back Northeast-10Conference championships in 2001 and 2002 and participatedin three NCAA Tournaments in the last seven seasons (2003,2006, 2009). The women’s tennis team qualified for its firstNCAA Tournament in 2009, while the women’s lacrosse teamhas reached the Northeast-10 championship game in each ofthe last two years. The softball team made its first-everappearance in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 2006, whilethe baseball team claimed its first-ever ECAC Division II title in1997.

The men’s lacrosse team advanced to the ECAC Tournamentin 1995, while the women’s lacrosse team advanced to thesemifinals of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament in justits third season as a varsity sport in 2006. The men’s tennis andvolleyball teams have also qualified for the NE-10 Tournamentin recent years, while the cheerleading team placed sixthnationally in 2006.

SNHU student-athletes succeed off the playing field aswell. Proof of this came in September of 2001 when theUniversity was one of nine recipients of the inaugural USAToday NCAA Foundation Academic Achievement Award, inrecognition of high graduation rates among student athletes.SNHU took home the award for the highest graduation rateamong all Division II schools. A total of 152 SNHU student-athletes were named to the Northeast-10 Commissioner’sHonor Roll in 2008-09, while two student-athletes were namedESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans.

SNHU also earned the Northeast-10 Conference AcademicAchievement Award following the 2001-02 school year.
