The Bryant University mascot was namedafter Earl Tupper, president andfounder of the Tupperware Corpora-

tion. Mr. Tupper donated his 220-acreSmithfield farm

estate to Bryant(which, at that time, was

called Bryant College) onOctober 24, 1967. Tupper,

who had originally plannedto sell his estate, was so

impressed with Bryant that he decided to donate the land instead,

allowing Bryant to move from its original location on Providence’s East Side to its current Smithfield, R.I. residence.

Originally nicknamed the Indians, Bryant became the Bulldogs in 1995. Out of appreciation for Earl Tupper and his generosity, when the school made themove, Tupper the Bulldog was born.

Mr. Machtley’s “New Century Plan For Excel-lence” initiated the most significant enhance-ments to the Bryant campus and communitysince the university’s move to Smithfield, andathletics was no exception. His New Century Plansaw the Bulldogs’ varsity athletics program ex-pand to 22 teams with the addition of football, field hockey, men’s and women’s lacrosse, andin 2005 men’s and women’s swimming.

The addition of the new varsity programsbrought about an overhaul of the university’sathletics facilities as well. These renovations arehighlighted by the construction of Bulldog Sta-dium, which serves as the home of the Bryantfootball, soccer and lacrosse teams, as well asstate-of-the-art fields for baseball, softball andfield hockey. Changes to Bulldog athletics also in-spired and supported the introduction of theWellness Center, which provides Bryant with ahealth and fitness center that is second to none.

Upon completion of his term in Congress, Mr.Machtley served as a partner in the internationaltelecommunications law firm Wilkinson, Barker,Knauer & Quinn in Washington, D.C. He is ad-mitted to practicing law in Rhode Island, Massa-chusetts and Florida.

Bryant University is a recognized member of theNCAA’s CHAMPS/Life Skills Program. The pro-gram is designed to provide student-athletes

with an enriched co-curricular experience, while as-sisting them in their pursuit of excellence in the class-room, on the playing field and in the community. Theareas of focus for the life skills program are:

ACADEMICS, ACHIEVEMENT AND MENTORSHIPStudent-athletes face many unique challenges in theareas of time management, study skills develop-ment, course balance and selection, and utilizationof campus resources. The University and the de-partment of athletics are sensitive to the high stan-

dards of success weexpect from ourstudent-athletes,and the supportand mentorshipprovided to them isdesigned to en-hance time man-agement and studyskill strategies, bet-ter preparing themfor success. Wealso utilize trackingmethods to ensurethat all student-athletes are taking

full advantage of the academic resources providedby the University.

The mentorship of our student-athletes is designed to supple-ment — not replace —theacademic advising offered byUndergraduate Programs. Addi-tionally, all student-athletes areencouraged to develop relation-ships with the faculty and takeadvantage of the Academic Cen-ter for Excellence (ACE) and theWriting Center on a weeklybasis.

ACE offers a variety of academicsupport resources, includinglearning skills assessments, learning labs, free tutoring services and learning spe-cialists. In addition to ACE, study halls are mandatoryfor all freshmen student-athletes, as well as any up-perclassmen with cumulative GPAs of 2.39 or below.

Bryant student-athletes have a long record ofdemonstrated academic success: almost half of ourstudent-athletes earned a GPA of 3.0 or above lastsemester, while more than 30 percent made Dean’sList. The University’s Chi Alpha Sigma chapter recog-nizes junior and senior student-athletes who achieveexcellence in the classroom (minimum 3.4 GPA), inthe community and in the playing arena.

PERSONAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENTCollege life is a new experience. Bryant addresses theadded demands for student-athletes in the areas ofsocial pressures, academics and the transition to a

higher level of athletic competi-tion. Educational speakers focuson social issues (substanceabuse, gambling, sexual assaultand self-esteem), health andwellness issues, academic pre-paredness and campus commu-nity leadership. Value-basedchoices and the development ofcharacter are important compo-nents of the educational experi-ence.

CAREER ENHANCEMENTStudent-athletes have a uniqueco-curricular experience that em-phasizes leadership, initiative, teamwork, goal setting, goalachievement and extensive time

management. This component of the life skills pro-gram focuses on student-athletes taking advantageof all of these tools in their career search and in theworkplace.

COMMUNITY SERVICECommunity service programs coordinated by theStudent-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and thePeer Mentor Programs are opportunities to experi-ence personal growth and development, as well asgive back to the community at-large. Prospectivemembers of Chi Alpha Sigma must fulfill inductionrequirements that include demonstrating positivecommunity leadership and completing significantcommunity service hours and projects.

ATHLETIC SUCCESSAs we endeavor to support our athletic program’ssuccess on the playing field, Bryant University em-ploys targeted programming in team leadership, communication, team chemistry and sports psy-chology as areas of focus. Additionally, the contin-ued development of SAAC and its goal of garneringcommunity support for all programs will continue tofoster a sense of Bryant spirit and pride.

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK

2010 Bryant University Softball 11

The foundation for success is there. After yearsof consecutive NCAA appearances, the BryantUniversity softball program took a major leap ayear ago into Division I waters. It was a chal-lenge for a youthful squad that was coming offanother NCAA playoff appearance in the pro-gram's final year of Division II competition.

But for these Bulldogs, the move to the highestlevel of softball was a welcomed challenge;and one they wouldn't back down from.

Behind a balanced offense, sound defense andtop-notch pitching, the Bulldogs earned victo-ries over Brown, Holy Cross, Central Connecti-cut and the University of Connecticut. Bryantfinished the season with 11 wins overall andplayed in 14 one-run games. The Bulldogswere also involved in five extra inning contests.

Now, with the first year of DI under their belts, the Bulldogs enter the spring season lookingto take another step forward. Head coach Lisa-Ann Wallace, now entering her tenth season atBryant, returns 10 letter winners including eightposition starters in 2010.

INFIELDThe Bulldogs will need to replace the bat ofAnne Dobmeier who is the only starter to grad-uate. Dobmeier led the Bulldogs with a .291average last season and was a solid player inthe field at first base with a .984 fielding per-centage.

Captain Shortstop Ali Chouinard (Swansea,Mass.), second baseman Laura Bowen (Hud-

son, Mass.) and junior Regina Burdo (Wayne,Pa.) once again form a solid infield defensively. After seeing action in 13 games as pitcher, in-cluding making five starts last season, sopho-more Stephanie Barrett (Plaistow, N.H.) willmake the move to first base to help fill the voidof Dobmeier. Newcomers Talia Zizza (Read-ing, Mass. / Reading Memorial) and BrittanyLischinsky (Mahopac, N.Y/ Lakeland) willalso compete for Dobmeier's position at firstbase. Lischinsky will also give the Bulldogs anadded arm out of the bullpen.

Newcomer Christina Eringis (Tewksbury,Mass./Central Catholic) is another infielderwith an excellent bat that the coaching staff isexcited about and could challenge for a spotat third base this season.

CATCHERThe Bulldogs are in good hands with veteranAshley Coon (Leavittown, Pa.) back. The sen-ior tri-captain is as good as they get both de-fensively and working with the pitching staff. Avocal competitor, Coon started all 42 gamesbehind the plate, finishing the year with a .953fielding percentage including just eight passedballs while gunning down 17 would-be basestealers.

PITCHERThe Bulldogs figure to be in good hands thanksto the return of Samantha Houseal (MountJoy, Pa.) after an outstanding sophomore sea-son. Houseal, now a captain of the Bulldog

squad started 37 of the team's 42 games andposted a 3.03 ERA. She fanned a Bryant record180 batters while walking just 72 in 250 in-nings. One the many highlights on the seasonhad to be the brilliant complete-game one-hit-ter in the team's win over Connecticut in April.

According to the coaching staff, newcomersBritanny Hart (North Andover, Mass. /Brooks School), Jennifer Jacob (Deer Park,N.Y. / St. Anthony's) and Kelly Cocco (Vernon,Conn. / Rockville) will make an immediate im-pact on the mound this spring.

OUTFIELDVeterans Lindsay Martin (Methuen, Mass.)and Lauren McCart (Vorhees, N.J.) are backand expected to resume their starting spots inthe outfield. Martin had an excellent freshmanseason in '09 where she hit .250 at the plate in-cluding five doubles and two triples. ClassmateMcCart was right behind with a .248 batting av-erage including five doubles while driving innine runs. Senior Kim Leonard (Milford,Mass.) is also expected to make the switchfrom third base to outfield and see qualitytime.

They'll be joined by a host of talented playerslooking to crack the lineup, including juniorJenna Jeffrey (Scarborough, Maine / Cather-ine McAuley) and freshman Kate Murray(Fitchburg, Mass. /Fitchburg).

The winningest coach in the history of the Bryant Uni-versity softball program, Coach Lisa-Ann Wallace hastaken the Bulldogs to heights never seen prior to

her arrival. Now entering her 10th season in 2010, Wal-lace led Bryant to five-straight NCAA tournament ap-pearances, two times serving as regional hosts, twoconference championship titles, three conference play-ers of the year and one conference pitcher of the year.

In addition to the success on the diamond, Wallace's stu-dent-athletes have also succeeded in the classroom aswell, including numerous academic all-conference recog-nitions and scholar-athlete awards and one NCAAWoman of the Year Honoree.

As the program prepares for its second year competingat the Division I level and first as members of the North-east Conference, there is no question coach Wallace hasthe program headed in the right direction and more suc-cess is sure to follow.

The years of Division II came to a conclusion in fine fash-ion in 2008. The Bulldogs enjoyed a 30-16 record andagain reached the Northeast-10 Conference tournamentfinal series thanks to the masterful pitching of NE-10Pitcher of the Year Janine Enos and qualified for theschool's fifth-straight NCAA tournament.

After inheriting a team that went 4-37 in 2000, Wallaceand assistant Nancy Burgess took the Bulldogs from

perennial conference cellar-dwellers toa conference powerhouse.

"It's been a privilege to coach here atBryant," said Wallace." These student-athletes over the past nine years have created a traditionof winning both in the classroom and on the field. All in-coming freshman should be honored to put on a Bryantuniform and continue the winning tradition."

Prior to her arrival, the Bulldogs suffered through a 4-37(1-17 in conference) season in 2000, but in Wallace's firstyear, the Bulldogs improved to 14-40 in 2001 and 22-24in 2002. The turnaround certainly didn't go unnoticed asshe was named the 2002 Northeast-10 Coach of the Yearby her colleagues.

But it was in 2004 that saw the program take a majorstep forward, not just within the conference, but on a re-gional level as well. Finishing 20-8 in the NE-10, the Bull-dogs were honored with not only its first-ever NCAAtournament berth, but the right to host the tournamentat the Bryant Softball Complex.

A year later in 2005, the Bulldogs finished with a 22-6conference record and captured the Northeast-10 Con-ference tournament title for the first time and saw threestudent-athletes earn all-conference honors.

The 2006 season saw Bryant capture its first-ever North-east-10 regular season and second consecutiveconference tournament championship with a 23-5conference record (29-18 overall). With it, the Bull-dogs headed off to yet another NCAA tournamentand collected some serious hardware along the wayas seven Bulldogs garnered all-conference honorsby the Northeast-10.

In 2007, the Bulldogs made their fourth consecu-tive trip to the NCAA Tournament, held at C.W.Post's campus in Brookville, NY. The Bulldogs de-feated East Coast Conference champion DowlingCollege, the Northeast-10 Tournament champUMass-Lowell and regional powerhouse Adelphibefore coming up just short to host C.W. Post in the regional finals. It was the furthest the Bulldogs hadever advanced in the NCAA Tournament.

compiled a 20-5 mark and placed second in the MASCAC behind peren-nial Division III power Bridgewater State.

Favorite Team Memory:

Choosing one would be too hard so I am going

to name a few. Being attacked by the tarp, dress

up days, beating UConn, singing on the bus

rides, first D1 win, making the 07 & 08 regionals,

when Coach took us for ice cream, I Hop at

12am, sing star, spring break trips, disney fresh-

man year, Coach doing push ups in Olive Garden

and many more!

What Black and Vegas Means to me:

It means heart... Giving everything you have be-

cause you love it. Holding yourself and your

teammates to the highest standard. Inspiring the

people around you to want to do better. Respect-

ing each other and our coaches. Supporting one

another through the ups and downs. And most

importantly never giving up, playing hard until

the last pitch is thrown.

When I walk on to the Bryant softball field I think

of:

All the amazing memories this field has allowed

me to make, friends this field has allowed me to

find, games this field has allowed me to play in

and a family this field has allowed me to be a

part of. It made me proud to wear the number 3

and be a Bryant University Softball player.

Advice to my teammates:

Never take the time you have here at Bryant or

on the softball field for granted. You can never

get it back, and you will be walking across that

graduation stage before you know it. Work hard

on the field and in the classroom and don't for-

get to enjoy every moment of it. I promise you,

you will have the best times of your life.

Favorite Team Memory:A favorite memory of being a student-athlete atBryant was experiencing what it is like to be a Di-vision II and Division I athlete. One of my fa-vorite team memories was beating UConn 1-0 onits home field and the celebration and excitementwe shared after the game. Making it to Re-gional’s freshman and sophomore year and thepassion our team shared throughout thosegames was also a memory I will always remem-ber. I also can’t forget about all the bus trips, plane rides, overnight stays in hotels, springbreaks, team dinners, surviving triple sessions to-gether, ice baths, and the laughs we have sharedeveryday!

What Black and Vegas Means to Me:When I wear the colors Black and Vegas I feel agreat sense of pride. It is an honor to be able toplay for those that have worn the colors beforeme and those that will wear it after me. Thesecolors symbolize the University that I am soproud to have attended for four years. When Iput on Bryant's Black and Vegas I know that I amrepresenting the entire school community. I amso thankful for the ability to represent these col-ors and this school as a softball player while striv-ing to exemplify everything that I have learned aBryant student-athlete should stand for.

When I walk on the Bryant Softball field: When I walk onto our beautiful field I feel privi-leged to be playing the game that I love. I think ofeverything it represents for me, from the manyhours of practice and working hard each day tothe thrill of competing and being with differentteammates. Once you step on the field as aBryant Softball player you are playing for the per-son next to you on the field, the people in thedugout, the people that have come before youand the fans and parents that support you. I thinkabout how much the simple game between thefoul lines has impacted my life so greatly.

Advice to my teammates:Enjoy every moment on and off the field becauseyour time at Bryant is going to go very fast. Workhard and give everything you have at practiceand games as well as academically. Have a shortmemory when you are on the field because mis-takes are going to happen. Major and Why:

I am double majoring in finance and marketing

because I enjoy both of them and want a lot of

options and a lot of money in my future as a

business woman.

Team I would like to see added to the schedule:

Penn State - most athletically admirable Division I

school from my home area and it would be inter-

esting to see how we would compete with them.

If I was not a softball player I would play:

Field Hockey

What I will miss most about the Seniors:

Ali - Her genuine ability to listen and care about

any person on the team at any time. Her love for

softball and her tremendous effort every time

she steps on the field.

Ashley - Her ability to simultaneously be brutally

honest and likable, her competitive edge and

leadership and most importantly eventful rides

back and forth to PA.

Kim - Her carefree attitude, witty humor and the

calm composure she brings to the bench during

games.

Pre-Game Rituals: I always put my uniform pieces on inthe same order. It was just a habit at first. Then when Irealized it, it became a superstition and I wouldn't lletmyself change it. I also rely heavily on music to get mein the right mindset to play. It's a great energizer.

What the Seniors Have Taught Me: The seniors have re-ally taught me about the value of teammates and howmuch we can all relate to each other just because of thethings we endure together as a team. They've alsotaught me a lot about finding a balance in life. It's justas important to be dedicated to softball and classes as itis to make time for some fun.

Major and why: My major is marketing with a minor incommunications. I chose marketing because it allowsme to be creative. With marketing I have the opportu-nity to work for various companies creating fun and at-tractive ways to entice customers.

Team I would like to see added to the schedule: I wouldlike to see more teams closer to Philadelphia added toour roster so more of my family can come to cheer uson. Teams like Temple and Villanova would be a chal-lenging addition to our roster. It would also be amazingto play a team like UCLA or Arizona.

If I was not a softball player I would play: If I didn't playsoftball I would be a gymnast. I was a gymnast for 10years and I miss impressing the crowd with my flips andtricks. Gymnastics combined three of my favoritethings: dancing, flipping, and fun!

What I will miss most about the Seniors: I will miss allthe seniors presence on the field next year. I will missthe PA unity between Ashley and I as well as all the longcar rides and flights we have taken together. Her com-mand on the field will be missed greatly. I will miss allthe fun Ali and I have had off the softball field. Shecould always make me laugh and her confidence in thefield will be missed. I will miss Kim leonard's sense ofhumor. She would crack a joke at the perfect time andher work ethic with school work is inspiring.
