The Park University men’s soccer team will embark on its second year in the American Midwest Conference in 2010 and will feature a schedule of 15 matches with eight matches being held at Julian Field on Park’s campus and seven on the road at various sites around the Midwest. Last season Park posted a record of 10-6-1 and advanced all the way to the AMC championship game, eventually losing to Columbia College, 2-1 in overtime. Park was 5-3-0 at home, 4-3-1 on the road and 1-0 at a neutral site in 2009. In this upcoming season, Park will play all of its matches at home or on the road with no neutral site games on the schedule. The Pirates will begin the 2010 season with three straight games at home, including the season opener on Saturday, Aug. 21, against University of Sioux Falls at 2 p.m. One week later Park will take on Midland Lutheran on Saturday, Aug. 28, at 3 p.m. The Pirates last took on Midland Lutheran on Sept. 8, 2007, a game in which the Warriors won, 1-0. Park did defeat MLC, 5-0, on Aug. 23, 2006. Park will then take on Lindenwood University in its first mid-week prime time game of the season at home on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m. It has been a few years since the Lions and Pirates have clashed, as Lindenwood beat Park, 2-0, on Sept. 28, 2005. Park’s first road contest will take place on Sunday, Sept. 12, against rival William Jewell College. Both teams battled for all 90 minutes a year ago with the Car-dinals outlasting Park, 2-1. The Pirates will face another local non-conference team on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m., as they take on Benedictine College on the road. Park beat BC a year ago at home, 2-0, and handed the Ravens one of their only three losses on the year. The AMC regular season will begin on Saturday, Sept.18, against rival McKendree University at 2:00 p.m. Both teams clashed twice last year, the first coming in the regular season with the Bearcats prevailing, 2-1, at home and the other coming in the semifinal round of the AMC Tournament also on McKendree’s home field, but this time Park came out victorious, 1-0 in overtime. Park will welcome in Graceland University to Julian Field on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 7 p.m. and will return to AMC action on the road on Saturday, Sept. 25, when the Pirates face off against Hannibal-LaGrange College. The Pirates will face another Heart of America Athletic Conference team in a non-conference match on Wednesday, Sept. 29 as they face MidAmerica Nazarene at 7 p.m., at Julian Field. After MidAmerica, Park will face three straight AMC teams, starting with Harris-Stowe on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 2 p.m., also at Julian Field. Starting Wednesday, Oct. 6, Park will embark on a four game road trip, beginning with that Wednesday match up with William Woods University at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 9, the Pirates will travel to St. Louis, Mo., for a conference battle with Missouri Baptist at 2 p.m. A few days later, Park will hit the road again to take on Baker University on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 7:30 p.m. Park’s final road regular season game will take place on Saturday, Oct. 16, at 11 a.m. as they take on Williams Baptist College. The regular season will come to a close on Saturday, Oct. 23, as Park faces off against rival Columbia College at 2:00 p.m. Park will honor its seniors before the match for Senior Day. The AMC postseason tournament will begin on Saturday, Nov. 6, as the tournament travels each game to campus sites. Teams with the highest seed will host each game including the semifinal and championship games which are on Tuesday, Nov. 9, and Friday, Nov. 12, respectively. The 2010 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship will take place from Nov. 29- Dec. 4 in Orange Beach, Ala., and will be hosted by the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission, in conjunction with the University of Mobile (Ala.). Park will look to make it to the national tournament final site for the first time since 2007.

Park University head coach Efrem Shimlis and his 2010 men’s soccer team will begin this season in uncharted waters, as they enter the year having not qualified for the NAIA National Tournament the year before. In 2009, Park failed to earn a spot in the National Tournament for the first time since 2001 and for this years group of six seniors they don’t want a repeat of last year’s disappointment. “The players in the past have set the bar high for our program and last year was disappointing for us in not qualifying for nationals, but we have the motivation and the drive to get back there this year,” said senior mid fielder Simon Senfuka. “I believe in my teammates and our goal is not only to make it to nationals again but to achieve even more at the national level in the postseason.” 2010 will also mark the 10th year that Shimlis has led the Pirates as head coach. He has posted an overall record of 108-69-13 and is second all-time in Park men’s soccer history in wins behind Ben Popoola who accumulated 165 wins in 13 years at the helm. Park has a 15-game schedule on the horizon with eight home games on the slate and seven road contests. Park will begin the year on Saturday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. against the University of Sioux Falls at beautiful Julian Field. Park will take the field with 24 players on its roster, with 18 of those returning off of last year’s squad and six newcomers becoming Pirates for the first time. The Pirates will only lose three starters off of last year’s team including four-year starting midfielder Adam Tayani, two-year starting goalkeeper Michael Eade and one-year player Jason Cosme. The Pirates return their four leading goal scorers from a year ago in Ramone Palmer, Jair Gooden, Matthew Ashman and Robert Palmer, all who ironically are from the same homeland of Kingston, Jamaica. Despite the loss of keeper Eade, Park returns its entire line of defense in seniors Michael Arrum and Kiefer Mergen and shutdown junior defenders Alain Matingou and Robert Palmer. That lineup of defenders helped Park to eight shutout victories in 2009 and gave up just 17 goals in 17 games. Park will return sophomore keeper T.G. Frame who started in two games for Park a year ago. Frame posted a record of 1-1 in those two starts by shutting out Williams Baptist, 5-0, and losing 3-0 to Hannibal-LaGrange. Park’s large crop of seniors this season include Senfuka, Yusuf Nsereko, Mergen, Arrum, Ceasar Mulonzi and Gaetano Simonella. That group of seniors has combined to play in 150 games for Park and has all the experience necessary to get the Pirates back to the national stage. “I am looking forward to this season because of the leadership and experience we have coming back to our team in our seniors,” said Shimlis. “I think this group will come together and take us to where we want to go which is back to nationals and hopefully further.” The 2010 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championships will be hosted by the Alabama Gulf Coast Sports Commission, in conjunction with the University of Mobile (Ala.) from Nov. 29-Dec. 4. The events will be played at Orange Beach Sportsplex in Orange Beach, Ala. Park’s six newcomers will feature five incoming freshmen in Nermin Abidovic, Anass Moudfir, Tyler Mehaffey, Kiel Williams and Reece Harris. It will also feature one incoming transfer student in junior Andrew Deveor, who comes to Park after two seasons at Missouri Valley College. “We are looking for the entire group of newcomers to come in and compete with our returners for starting spots at every position,” said Shimlis. “Each will bring a different style of soccer to our team and we will all come together in the preseason and become a cohesive group by the first match.”

with the start of the 2010 Park University men’s soccer season, head coach Efrem Shimlis will celebrate his 10th year as head coach of the Pirate men’s soccer squad and will look to take

his team back to the NAIA National Tournament for the eighth time in his 10 years at the helm. Shimlis accepted the head coaching position after three years as an assistant coach in the program, and a four-year career as a player for the Pirates. Park’s 2009 season was full of highs and lows, the Pirates began the year red hot, winning five of its first six matches. The Pirates even shutout No. 4 ranked and eventual national champion, Lindsey Wilson College, 3-0, on Labor Day, the win marked Shimlis’ 100th career victory at Park. Park then dropped three straight matches, before rebounding for two straight American Midwest Conference wins over Missouri Baptist and Harris-Stowe. Park entered the AMC Conference Tournament as the No. 3 seed and defeated Harris-Stowe, 3-0, in the quarterfinal match. The Pirates hit the road for the AMC Semifinal round to face the No. 2 seed, McKendree. In a thrilling overtime game, Park defeated the Bearcats, 1-0, in overtime off of a goal by freshman Matthew Ashman. Park eventually lost to No. 1 seeded Columbia College in the AMC Championship game in an-other overtime match, 2-1. Park ended the year with a record of 10-6-1 and failed to qualify for the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship Tournament for the first time in eight years. In his nine years at Park, Shimlis has amassed a 108-69-13 record, averaging 12 wins per season. Shimlis led the Pirates to another superb season in 2008, qualifying Park for its seventh straight NAIA National Tournament appearance, which was the third longest active streak in the country. The Pirates eventually lost to Baker University, 1-0, in the NAIA Opening Round game but still posted a stellar, 11-4-3 overall record. Park was ranked in every NAIA Coaches Top 25 Poll in 2008 and was ranked as high as No. 7 in the Poll. In 2007, Shimlis led the Pirates to a 13-6 overall record and finished 4-0 in the MCAC. The men were crowned MCAC Regular Season Champs and Region IV Tournament Champions. Park took second in the MCAC Conference Tournament, falling 1-0 in overtime to Bellevue University. Shimlis was recognized by both the MCAC and Region IV as Coach of the Year. Shimlis took the Pirates to their sixth NAIA National Tournament in a row in 2007. Park was knocked out in the first round of the tournament by No. 5 seeded Simon Fraser (B.C.), 1-0. The Pirates didn’t leave the tournament empty handed, as they were recognized with the 2007 NELS Dahlquist Team Sportsmanship Award. Shimlis had four athletes recognized as all-Americans, and eight athletes were named to Region IV and MCAC teams. The Pirates also spent the entire 2007 season nationally ranked in the NAIA Top-25. Park was a preseason No. 15 pick and peaked at No. 14 twice throughout the season. The Pirates finished the 2006 season at 13-8-1 and Shimlis took the Pirates to Daytona Beach, Fla. for the NAIA Tournament. Park defeated Goshen College out of Indiana in penalty kicks, advancing to Round Two of the tournament. Their quest for the NAIA title ended in Round Two for a second year in a row, falling 3-2 to No. 3 Webber International (Fla.). Before his appointment at Park, Shimlis collected a wide range of coaching and professional playing experiences. Originally from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Shimlis played for the Pirates from 1992-1996. His extensive experience includes playing professionally for the 1997 World Champion Kansas City Attack of the National Professional Soccer League, as well as the Daytona Speed Kings and the Columbus Comets. In the spring of 2008, Shimlis co-founded the youth soccer club Harambe Futbol Club. Harambe F.C. is based in the Kansas City metro area and has 14 boys and girls soccer teams. Shimlis is the head coach of U-11 girls Harambe F.C. Fury and U-15 boys Harambe F.C. United. Shimlis, who resides in Parkville, Mo., earned a bachelor’s degree from Park in history in 1997.

The 2009 Park University men’s soccer season began with a bang as the Pirates won their first two matches by a combined score of 7-1 and defeated the eventual NAIA National Champion Lindsey Wilson Blue Raiders in shutout fashion, 3-0. Park opened the season with a dominant 4-1 win over Avila University at home and carried that momentum into the match against then No. 4 ranked Lindsey Wilson. Park came out of the gate firing against LWC, as freshman Matthew Ashman scored in the ninth minute with a powerful kick past the keeper. Fellow freshman Jair Gooden scored Park’s second and third goal to put the Pirates in the lead for good. Park’s win over Lindsey Wilson was the first of the season for the Blue Raiders and as the season progressed was only one of two losses for LWC all season. The victory was also No. 100 for head coach Efrem Shimlis in his nine years as the head coach for Park. Park then took on rival William Jewell at home on Sept. 9. The Pirates and Cardi-nals battled for all 90 minutes with Jewell coming away victorious, 2-1. Park responded after the close loss to win three straight over Benedictine College, No. 17 ranked Grace-land and AMC opponent William Woods. With a record of 5-1 and in prime position for a shot at the AMC regular season championship, Park had three pivotal games on the horizon with two against ranked opponents. Park began the tough three-game stretch with a home loss to Hannibal-LaGrange College, 3-1, and an overtime loss to No. 24 ranked Columbia College on the road, 2-1. Park then came home to face a solid No. 14 ranked Baker University team. The match went into to double overtime and finally was resulted when Baker scored to bring the final to 3-2. The Pirates were now 5-4 on the season and half way done with the season looking for a much needed victory. The victory came when the Pirates defeated Missouri Baptist at home on Oct. 17, in a 2-1 game. The Pirates improved their record to 7-4 with another AMC victory over Harris-Stowe on the road, 2-0. After a 1-1 double overtime tie against Grand View College, Park played McKendree University in a pivotal AMC road game on Oct. 24. Both teams battled it out until the end, but McKendree took home the 2-1 victory and Park had just one more match left in the regular season. Park rolled through its final AMC match of the season, as they blew out Williams Baptist College, 5-0, with goals from Jason Cosme, Robert Palmer, Adam Tayani, Dawit Gebremariam and Todd Smith. Park finished the regular season with a record of 8-5-1 and an AMC record of 4-3-0. Now it was time for Park to compete in the postseason, and first up was the AMC Quarterfinal match with Harris-Stowe at Julian Field on Nov. 7. Park felt no pressure against the Hornets winning 3-0 in front of its home crowd. Three days later the Pirates traveled to Lebanon, Ill., to face the No. 2 seeded McK-endree Bearcats. The game went scoreless through regulation and into the first overtime. But, in the 101st minute, Matthew Ashman slipped past two defenders and knocked home the game winner. Park then took on Columbia College on Nov. 13, in the AMC Championship game. Columbia struck first in the 27th minute with a goal from Milo Milosavljevic. At halftime the score was the same as the Cougars led, 1-0. One minute into the second half, Park tied up the game with a goal from its leading goal scorer Ramone Palmer in the 46th minute. Neither team scored the rest of the half and the match went into overtime with the scored tied up at 1. Finally in the 97th minute Columbia’s Jordan Cox laced one past keeper Michael Eade and the Cougars qualified for the 2009 NAIA Men’s Soccer Opening Round, end-ing Park’s seven year run of qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament. Park ended its season with a record of 10-6-1 but took home many postseason awards including Ramone Palmer’s distinction on the 2009 NAIA Men’s Soccer All-America team as an honorable mention selection. Palmer was also named to the AMC All-Conference first team along with defense man Robert Palmer. Defender Alain Matingou, mid fielder Simon Senfuka and forward Matthew Ash-man were also named to the 2009 AMC Honorable Mention All-Conference squad.

Junior defender Alain Matingou was named to the 2009 AMC Honorable Mention All-Conference team. Matingou was one of Park’s top defensemen playing in 16 games and helped the Pirates to eight shutout victories.

For the second straight year Ramone Palmer was named to the NAIA Men’s Soccer All-America team as an honorable mention selection. Palmer led the team in goals with 12, assists with six and shots taken with 52 in 2009.

26 P ark University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City area home, offer-ing students the features of both small-town life and the flashing lights of a big city. With a population of more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east gives Park University students two great entertainment opportunities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is locally referred to as “north of the river.” Contained wholly within Missouri, it encompasses portions of Clay County including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Liberty, North Kansas City and Gladstone. Kansas City is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the state border between the two states. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 29th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just over 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League, Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wizards and the Kansas Speedway, which hosts several NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year including one Sprint Cup Series event in the fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kansas City T-Bones independent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Explorers of World Team Tennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertain-ment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Experience, which includes the College Basketball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Additionally, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the sum-mer of 2007. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Town Center and The Legends at Village West keep shoppers occupied in the Sunflower State.

English was joined in the 2010 McLendon Hall of Fame induction class by Percy Bates, Bernie Bickerstaff, Howard Gentry, Sr., Michael Haynes, Rafer Johnson and Don Newcombe, while a second group of Pioneer Award winners was also honored. That group included Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez, Ernie Davis, Mike Garrett, Tom Goss, Dan Guerrero, Charles Harris, Tommy Hawkins, Kim Ng, Fritz Pollard, Burl Toler and Tyrone Willingham. English began his affiliation with Park University in the 1992-93 men’s basketball season, coaching the Pirates through the end of the 2004-05 campaign. For his final 10 seasons at the helm of the Park men’s basketball pro-gram, English also assumed the duties of Director of Athletics, a position he will continue into his 15th year in the 2010-11 academic year. During his tenure as Park’s Director of Athletics, English has guided the addition of two spring sports – base-ball and women’s golf – in addition to facility upgrades throughout the department of athletics. Park’s facility upgrades under English’s watch began with the 1,500-seat Julian Field, home to Park University men’s and women’s soccer, followed by the 1,200-seat Breckon Sports Center, constructed in 2000 to become the home of Park University’s men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as its men’s and women’s volleyball programs. Breckon Sports Center houses administrative offices and two domes – one for competition and one for practice. Recent upgrades to Park’s softball and baseball facilities have also come under English’s watch, including new dugouts at the Park University Softball Complex, as well as new bleachers and game-scoring facilities at Comfort Field, the home of Park University baseball. English is the winningest coach in Park University men’s basketball history, compiling 182 wins to push his overall win total to 227. From 1981 to 1984, English was the head men’s basketball coach at his alma mater, Rhode Island, where he was named Atlantic-10 Conference Coach of the Year in the 1981-82 season. His coaching tenure at Park was highlighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tour-nament semifinal round in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team recognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After a stellar collegiate playing career for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the University of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hartford Capitals, the affiliate team for the Phila-delphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Championship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. As Director of Athletics at Park, the Pirates have captured 47 conference championships, and in each of his 14 previous seasons as athletics director, at least one Park program has advanced to NAIA postseason play each year. Also during his run as Director of Athletics, 77 student-athletes have been named NAIA All-Americans, and 161 student-athletes have earned Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete honors. In 2008-09, Park University’s department of athletics carried an overall grade point average better than 3.0, and the Pirates earned a school record seven NAIA scholar teams, marking more than half of the department’s programs posting a team GPA of 3.0 or better.

The American Midwest Conference (formerly known as the Show-Me Collegiate Conference) sponsors championships in 13 different sports: base-ball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The purpose of the American Midwest Conference is to promote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar foundations to engage in athletic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic environment. The AMC is a member of the National Associa-tion of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The nine member institutions that make up the AMC include Park University (Parkville, Mo.), Columbia College (Columbia, Mo.), Hannibal-LaGrange College (Hannibal, Mo.), Harris-Stowe State University (St. Louis, Mo.), McKendree University (Lebanon, Ill.), Missouri Baptist University (St. Louis, Mo.), Stephens College (Columbia, Mo.), Williams Baptist College (Walnut Ridge, Ark.) and William Woods University (Fulton, Mo.)

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member institutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recognizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmosphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportunity and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administrator is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa. The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation. Through Champions of Char-acter, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
