2009 Season Preview Despite losing two 2008 Brine-NAIA All-America Honorable Mention players from a year ago and 63 percent of its offense from last season, the 2009 Park University men’s soccer team will bring back a team loaded with talent and experience. With the loss of seniors James Katajwa and Raad Qumsieh, the Pirates will look for its younger stars to shine again on offense in ‘09. MCAC Newcomer of the year and 2008 Brine-NAIA All-America Honorable Mention selection Ramone Palmer will return for the Pirates for his sophomore season. The Kingston, Jamaica native finished last season, second on the team in total points with 23. He also led the squad in assists with seven and was second on the team in goals scored with eight. Park will also return the services of sophomore Gaetano Simonella who played briefly last season, but made his presence known by scoring three goals, while only taking six shots, which was good for a .500 shooting percentage. After watching the impact that Ramone and Robert Palmer made last year in their first year as Pirates, there’s no question there will be even more excitement as Park welcome’s in two new freshmen to this year’s team from the Palmer’s home country of Jamaica. The two new players from the Caribbean nation are Jair Gooden and Mathew Ashman. Gooden will look to play from the midfield position, while Ashman could see some starting time at the forward spot, and head coach Efrem Shimlis is very excited to have them join the team. “Jair is probably one of our top recruits for this year. He can really play anywhere on the field, but I would like to see him play as an of-fensive midfielder,” Shimlis said. “Matthew is a player that I expect to come in and make an impact right away. He has played with some of our current players in the past in Jamaica and I think that will help him out as well.” Defensively the Pirates have some solid contributors returning, including the 2008 MCAC Defensive Player of the Year Michael Eade and MCAC Freshman of the Year Robert Palmer. Eade, has been a superb goalkeeper for Park in each of his two seasons. The London, England, native started in 17 games for Park in ‘08 and gave up only 16 goals on the year, good for a 0.96 goals-against-average. Eade had 68 saves and posted a stellar .810 save percentage. “He (Eade) came in here as a backup goalie and worked hard, earning his spot in the starting lineup and I expect him to be a solid goalie for us again this year.” Palmer was not only the conference’s Freshman of the Year, but he was also selected to the MCAC First-Team for his play at the defender position. Palmer was a vital part of all of Park’s six shutout victories and was named the MCAC Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 27, for his spectacular play in two shutout victories against then No. 3 ranked Southern Nazarene and Central Christian Col-lege. Another contributor the Park defense in his first year last season was Alain Matingou. The Paris, France, native used his gifted athletic ability to defend opponents most talented players and helped the defense clear dozens of balls throughout the year. For his efforts he too was named the MCAC Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 6. This year’s squad will feature three seniors, in Michael Arrum, Adam Tayani and Jim Ross and will also have eight juniors on the squad including, Roberto Carrion, Jason Cosme, Eade, Matingou, Keifer Mergen, Stephen Mulonzi, Yusuf Nsereko and Simon Senfuka. The Pirates will also have eight sophomores on the years roster which will include Kyle Boger, Sibhat Dagnachaw, Thomas Frame, Dawit Gebremariam, Robert Palmer, Ramone Palmer, Gaetano and Todd Smith. Finally, the Pirates will add four freshman to the mix in ‘09 with Phillip Hayes, Jordan Lowe, Ashman, Gooden.

Park University head men’s soccer coach Efrem Shimlis and the rest of his squad will be challenged from the get go according to their 2009 soccer schedule, which will feature seven home matches at Park’s Julian Field and a rematch of the 2008 NAIA Opening Round game between Park and Baker University. The Pirates will take on five teams that were ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll last season and four teams that qualified for the 2008 NAIA Men’s Soccer National Tournament, along with two teams that received votes in the NAIA Coaches Poll. “We have always had the tradition of playing tough teams and we take pride in that,” Shimlis said. “In order to see where your team is you have to play tough teams early.” Park will open up the season with an intra squad exhibition match known as the “Maroon and Gold game” on Aug. 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Park’s Julian Field. The regular season will begin on Aug. 29 at 3:00 p.m., featuring a match between the Pirates and Avila University at Julian Field. The Heart of America Athletic Conference team finished the 2008 season with an overall record of 4-13-1 and 1-8 in its conference. Park’s next contest will feature a duel against one of the nation’s powerhouse programs in Lindsey Wilson University. Lindsey Wilson was ranked in the Top 10 throughout the 2008 season and held the No. 1 spot in the nation at one point in ‘08. Park and Lindsey will clash on the campus of Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., on Monday, Sept. 7 at 1:00 p.m. The Blue Raiders won the Mid-South Conference Tournament in 2008 to qualify for the NAIA National Tournament and made it to the second round before being knocked out of the tourney by Mount Vernon Nazarene, 1-0. Lindsey took down Park, 1-0, last season back on August 30. “We have had the opportunity to play Lindsey Wilson early in the season the past few years and we are fortunate because it is not easy to schedule such solid teams like Lindsey Wilson every year,” Shimlis said. “It’s great for our program to play such a superb team like them.” Park’s next two games will put them up against two local rivals in William Jewell College and Benedictine College. The Pirates will take on Jewell at home on Sept. 9 at 7:00 p.m. and then one week later will take on the Ravens also at home on Sept. 16 at 7:00 p.m. The Pirates defeated Jewell, 1-0, last season on a goal from Tazou Ali Tagba, while Park and Benedictine tied last season, 1-1, back on September 17, 2008. After a road contest against Graceland on Sept. 22, Park will come home for two home games against new Conference foes, William Woods and Hannibal-LaGrange College.Park will begin its first season back in the American Midwest Conference in 2009 and had previously held membership in the AMC from 1993 to 2000, exiting the league following the spring semester in 2000. “I am very excited about joining the AMC again because in my opinion that conference is going to be one of the best conferences in the country for soccer,” Shimlis said. “Our players know that every team we play this year in the AMC will make us play hard and we will have our work cut out for us.” Hannibal-LaGrange is the AMC defending Tournament Champion and qualified for the NAIA Opening Round game last season, a game in which they lost to Hastings College on penalty kicks. After another road contest at Columbia College on Oct. 10, the Pirates will face Baker University on Oct. 13 at Julian Field beginning at 7 p.m. in a rematch of last seasons NAIA Opening Round clash, in which the Wildcats defeated Park, 1-0, in overtime and ended the Pirates 2008 season. Park’s Senior Day celebration will take place on Saturday, Oct. 17 prior to the kickoff between the Pirates and AMC opponent Missouri Baptist. Park will end the regular season with four straight road contests beginning with Harris Stowe State on Oct. 19, nationally ranked Grandview University on Oct. 24, nationally ranked AMC opponent McKendree University on Oct. 24 and Williams Baptist College on Halloween, October 31. The AMC Conference Tournament will begin on Nov. 6 with the Quarterfinal Round which will take place at various sites and will carry on with the Semifinal Round on Nov. 9 and will finish up on Nov. 12 with the Championship game which will also be played on Campus sites. The NAIA Opening Round is set for Nov. 21, while the official NAIA National Tournament is slated for Nov. 30 – Dec. 5 in Fresno, Calif. at Ramirez Field on the campus of Fresno Pacific University. The Pirates will look to return to their eighth straight NAIA National Tournament in 2009, as they reached the National Tournament last season with an overall record of 11-4-3.

The 2008 Park University men’s soccer team proved to the soccer world that it was still one of the elite programs in the country. The Pirates qualified for its seventh straight NAIA National Tournament and finished the season ranked No. 10 in the NAIA Coaches Top 25 poll. Park also picked up its 350th win in program history which ranks 14th all-time among NAIA Men’s Soccer programs. Under the direction of 2008 MCAC Coach of the Year Efrem Shimlis, Park posted three NAIA All-American Honorable Men-tion selections in James Katajwa, Tazou Ali Tagba and Ramone Palmer and had six MCAC First-Team selections and three MCAC Second-Team selections. Park’s goalkeeper Michael Eade was named MCAC Defensive Player of the year, while Palmer was named MCAC Newcomer of the year and defender Robert Palmer was tabbed MCAC Freshman of the Year. Park opened up the season by playing NAIA powerhouse Lindsey Wilson College on August 30. In a hard fought battle, No. 6 ranked Lindsey Wilson snuck by the Pirates for the 1-0 win. A day later, Park took on No. 17 ranked Lee University and handled the Flames in a 2-1 victory. In the Pirates 2008 home opener, Park ran into a tough Oklahoma Christian team and finished the game in a 1-1 tie. After defeat-ing rival William Jewell, 1-0, on the road in early September, Park traveled to Atchison, Kan. and took on the Ravens of Benedictine. Park and Benedictine battled throughout and again the Pirates finished in a 1-1 tie with the Ravens. The Pirates responded after that game to win and impressive five straight games and catapulted into the NAIA Top 10 at No. 7. Two tough opponents came calling for Park after its hot streak including No. 24 ranked Baker University and MCAC Conference foe Bellevue University, both on the road. Baker and Park went toe-to-toe for the full 90 minutes plus two overtime periods and ended the match in a, 0-0, tie. The tied match marked the Pirates third tie of the season. On October 11, Park and Bellevue matched up in a shoot out with the Bruins pre-vailing, 3-2, to take the MCAC regular season crown. Park responded after the loss to the Bruins and won four straight matches leading into a rematch with Bellevue in the NAIA National Qualifying Championship on November 15 at Bellevue’s home field. Bellevue again shutdown the Pirates for a 2-0 victory, but that did not end the Pirates season as they earned a berth into the NAIA National Tournament Opening round as the tournaments fourth at-large team. Park was dealt a rematch with Baker University on November 22 at Baker’s Liston Stadium for the NAIA Opening Round con-test. In another overtime thriller, the Wildcats scored in the first overtime period and ended the Pirates season in a 1-0 game. Park fin-ished the year with a stellar 11-4-3 season and a No. 10 ranking in the final NAIA coaches poll, solidifying itself as one of the premiere clubs in the country.

Director of Athletics

Claude

English Director of Athletics18th Year at Park

Claude W. English is in his 14th year as Park University’s Director of Athletics, serving as Park’s AD since January 1996. He is in his 19th year as a member of the athletics staff at Park University. English also coached the Pirate men’s basketball squad for 13 seasons, retiring from coaching at the end of the 2004-05 season. Through English’s tenure as athletics director, Park has undergone vast improvements, including the addition of women’s golf and baseball as intercollegiate sports.

Additionally, English has overseen numerous facility improvements, including the 1,500-seat Julian Field, home to Park University men’s and women’s soccer, as well as Breckon Sports Center, which houses Park’s men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s volleyball and adminis-trative offices. Breckon Sports Center, named after Dr. Donald J. Breckon, also houses an indoor practice facility for fall and spring sports. In 2008 Park athletics had another banner year, as the softball pro-gram qualified for its first ever NAIA National Championship appearance and picked up a win in the National Tournament along the way. Park’s women’s soccer program qualified for its eighth NAIA National Tourna-ment appearance and the men’s squad qualified for its ninth appearance and seventh in a row. Park’s baseball team finished 2008 with a 34-12 record, which set the mark for most wins all-time in a season for the program. During the 2007-08 season, Park made history under English’s watch, winning its second men’s volleyball National Invitational Tournament Championsip in April, followed by the school’s first-ever regular-season conference championship in softball.

Women’s golf also advanced to its first-ever national tournament after winning its first-ever Region IV championship, accomplishing the feat in the program’s fifth year of varsity status. In addition to the nine Park squads that advanced to national competition, three more sports – women’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball – were within one game of qualifying for national tournaments in ‘07-08. The winningest coach in Park men’s basketball history with a record of 182-207, English’s coaching tenure was highlighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Final Four in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sports-manship Award for the team recognized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After playing basketball for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the University of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Portland Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 season. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hartford Capi-tals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Championship with the Capi-tals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. He joined the coaching staff at the University of Rhode Island in 1972 where he remained for 12 years, including four seasons as the head coach from 1981-84. English was named Coach of the Year in the Atlan-tic 10 Conference in 1981. Overall, he owns a 227-277 combined career record in 17 seasons as a head coach at Park University and Rhode Island.

The American Midwest Conference (formerly known as the Show-Me Collegiate Conference sponsors championships in 13 different sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volleyball. The purpose of the American Midwest Conference is to promote the positive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar founda-tions to engage in athletic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic environment.

The purpose of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) is to promote the education and development of students through intercollegiate athletic participation. Member insti-tutions, although varied and diverse, share a common commitment to high standards and to the principle that participation in athletics serves as an integral part of the total educational process. The NAIA embraces the concept of the student and recog-nizes the importance of the individuality of each member institution, the value of the conferences and Association of Independent Institu-tions (A.I.I.) structure, and the benefits of membership in a national association. The NAIA supports gender equity. Gender equity is an atmo-sphere and reality where fair distribution of overall athletic opportuni-ty and resources, proportionate to enrollment, are available to women and men, and where no student-athlete, coach or athletics administra-tor is discriminated against in any way in the athletics program. That is to say, an athletics program is gender-equitable when the men’s sports program would be pleased to accept as its own the overall participation opportunities and resources currently allocated to the women’s sports program and vice versa. The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and uni-versities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Inde-pendent Institutions (A.I.I.), the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of in-novation. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to cre-ate an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.
