Courtesy KCACSPORTS.COM - The present legal entity comes from a reor-ganization of the conference when the prede-cessor Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Con-ference formally disbanded on December 1, 1928 and a new conference was formed called the Kansas College Athletic Confer-ence. The members were Baker, Bethany, KS Wesleyan, McPherson, Ottawa, and St. Mary’s colleges. At that time sportswrit-ers quickly gave the KCAC league a nick-name: the “Little Six,” in contrast to the Big 6 (which became the Big 8, now the Big 12) which also was organized in 1928. St. Mary’s College was discontinued in 1931.

The College of Emporia returned to the fold in 1933, and Bethel was readmitted in 1939. Friends, a former member of the KIAC, was admitted in 1953. Sterling and South-western were approved for membership in 1958. In 1968 Tabor College and St. Mary of the Plains College were admitted to make twelve members in the conference, and the conference was organized into Northern and Southern divisions until 1970 – when Baker, College of Emporia, and Ottawa withdrew to join two separate Missouri-based confer-ences.

In the mid-1970s the formal name was changed again to Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. In 1975 women’s intercolle-giate athletics were incorporated into pro-grams of the KCAC. Ottawa was readmitted in 1981, bringing the conference member-ship to 10. In 1992 St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City left the conference and eventually closed. In 1999 University of Saint Mary-Leavenworth joined to bring the KCAC membership to ten.

Today the KCAC sponsors conference in-tercollegiate athletics in football, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor/out-door track and field, baseball, softball, golf, and men’s and women’s tennis.

During the 2008 season Peoples Bank Field hosted the 2008 Men’s and Women’s KCAC Soccer Championships. Peoples Bank Field features Field-turf®, a registered trademark of Fieldturf Tarkett. It has been installed on more than 1,800 fields world-wide, several in continuous use for almost a decade. The turf has received wide acclaim for its forgiving nature, durability and grass-like performance. Fieldturf® users have also documented a reduction of sports injuries in comparison to the carpet-like artificial turf of the past. The field features an eight lane track that is named the Bill “Bo” Boucek Track.

On October 15, 2004, the University celebrated the completion of the

Hull Center for Athletics with a dedication ceremony. The Hull Center

became a reality through the generous gift of Jeff L. (’88) and Tracy

J. Hull. The gift was made in honor of Jeff’s grandparents and parents,

and represents the ongoing relationship between the Hull Family and

Ottawa University. Jeff’s grandfather, Robert L. Hull, was the Univer-

sity’s superintendent of buildings and grounds for over twenty years.

In addition to keeping the University’s physical plant running in top

shape, Robert was also the general contractor in the construction of the

Mabee Athletic Center.

Richard L. Hull (’71), Jeff ’s father, attended OU on a football schol-

arship, while majoring in Biology. A four-year starter on Ottawa’s

football team, he was captain of the 1970 KCAC championship team.

After graduating from Ottawa, Richard completed medical school and

set up a successful medical practice as a physician and surgeon in Iola,

Kansas.

Jeff came to Ottawa University on a football scholarship as well. He

was a four-year starter for the Braves, earning numerous awards includ-

ing two-time All-Conference, two-time NAIA Academic All-Ameri-

can, and the College Football Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Award. He graduated with honors and distinction in 1988 with a major

in accounting. He has gone on to have a successful career in business,

serving as the chairman, president and CEO of Atrium Companies Inc.

Jeff’s two other siblings, sister Cindy (’97) and brother Michael (’00),

also left lasting marks on Ottawa University.

Cindy (Hull) Stockton was an All-Conference player on the Lady

Braves basketball team. When she finished her playing career at OU,

she held various records including highest field goal percentage and

most blocked shots in a season. She was also a member of Who’s Who

Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. Michael be-

came OU’s first two-time NAIA First Team All-American football

player and is second all-time in career receptions (156). The outstand-

ing athletic talent and academic success represented by the Hull Fam-

ily affirms a family philosophy that the two should go hand-in-hand.

Indeed, the Latin inscription on the Hull Center, mens sana in corpore

sano – a healthy mind in a healthy body – gives testimony to this be-

lief.
