2010 DC Football Media Guide

Defiance College, founded in 1850, is a private liberal arts college affiliated with the United Church of Christ, serving approximately 1,100 students.

Building on a strong foundation of more than a century of educat-ing citizens for lives of leadership and service, Defiance College provides opportunities for its students to make a meaningful impact on society in the twenty-first century with an educational experience of engagement. Defiance’s spirit of service through leadership sets us apart.

The Princeton Review features Defiance College in Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Community In-volvement. Defiance College has been named for five-consecutive years to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service, and for the past two years, DC has been named a Military Friendly School for provid-ing significant benefits and services to veterans. Defiance College is also one of 119 U.S. colleges and universities selected by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to receive its 2008 Community Engagement Classification.

The McMaster School for Advancing Humanity was created to pro-vide opportunities for DC undergraduate students and faculty to more closely examine global issues and how they affect the human condition. Faculty and students conducted projects during the 2009-10 year in Belize, Cambodia and New Orleans. The School serves as the umbrella for the Service Leadership Program developing leadership communication, conflict resolution and cultural aware-ness; the Carolyn M. Small Honors Program providing opportunities for students to participate in an honors curriculum; Project 701, a student-run nonprofit organization; and study abroad programs.

Defiance College is also home of the Hench Autism Studies Pro-gram, an innovative, multi-faceted program designed to specifically address the late adolescent years and the transition of individuals with autism to adulthood.

Student life is an important part of a Defiance College education. Activities include student government, musical and theater groups, religious organizations, the student newspaper, intercultural organi-zations, honor societies, special interest groups, intramural athlet-ics, and four Greek chapters including a service fraternity. As a national leader in the field of service learning and engagement, DC teaches students to take the knowledge they have gained and use it to change lives for the better in their communities, in distant villages, and in their careers.

Dear Fellow Defiance College Fan:

On behalf of our wonderful Defiance College family, I am honored to welcome you to our campus and to today’s game.

Defiance College is very much a college on the move. This year we welcomed the largest number of incoming freshmen in recent memory, up sig-nificantly from last year. In fact, 44 percent of our applicants this past year came from outside Ohio, representing 42 states and two territories. They came to Defiance College for many reasons. We are a small college with a real family feel. We offer a wide range of academic majors and inter-collegiate and intramural athletic activities. We provide individual attention through our innovative Personal Success Plan (PSP) process in which stu-dents work with a team of people at the College to develop their own per-sonalized strategic plans for success in college and beyond. Our wonderful faculty provide a stimulating academic environment as well as serving as personal mentors for students. Our coaches train student-athletes to excel in their sports while also giving them the guidance and support necessary to help them become committed students and community leaders.

In fact, we are especially proud of the ways in which our student-ath-letes continue and further DC’s commitment to community service. Student-athletes serve in many different capacities, from volunteering to assist senior citizens and children, to helping to run, manage, and operate our path-breaking new student-run non-profit, Project 701. This non-profit gives students an opportunity not just to engage in volun-tarism, but also to create, develop, run, and supervise a wide range of community-service projects.

If you are reading this while you are on campus, you are probably close by the site for construction of our new field house. We are very pleased that all members of our DC community will soon be enjoying this field house, which will include extensive practice and work-out facilities for athletes and non-athletes alike. We are particularly pleased that by building this field house, Defiance can help stimulate economic development in our community while providing a premiere athletic facility in northwest Ohio.

I hope you will have an opportunity to get to know our student-athletes both as members of a team and as individuals. They are an impressive bunch, who bring a wonderful level of excitement and energy to every-thing they undertake. And they also have tremendous potential. It has been my pleasure to get to know and interact with them on a regular basis. I encourage you to seek opportunities to meet them as well.

I want to thank our entire team, including players, coaches, trainers and staff, for the great work they do every day and the numerous ways in which they go “above and beyond” on a regular basis. I also want to thank our alumni, the parents of our athletes, and the various organiza-tions, all of whom donate generously to our athletic programs. Members of the Defiance College Board of Trustees, the Purple and Gold Club, and the Alumni Varsity ‘D’ all contribute immeasurably as well, both as individuals and through their organizations.

We are pleased to have you as our guest at DC today and hope that you will return to campus frequently for both sporting events and the numerous cultural and academic events which we are so proud to host.

We hope you enjoy the game. Go Jackets!

Sincerely,

Mark C. Gordon, PresidentSERRICK CAMPUS CENTER

IN THE COMMUNITY DC FOOTBALL 201012-Time Conference Champions - 1920, 1924, 1931, 1953, 1962, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1976, 1977, 2001

Defiance College has challenged students to defy the ordi-nary, to explore academic boundaries, to take on roles of civic responsibility and leadership, and to become engaged on campus and in the community. All of this makes for an extraordinary college experience.

Nowhere else will you find students committed to their com-munities like Defiance College, and nowhere else will you find student-athletes and coaches as immersed in service and engagement.

During the 2009-2010 academic year, Defiance College stu-dent-athletes contributed nearly 2,400 hours of service in their community. The football team contributed more than 670 hours of service last year.

It has been a tradition for the DC football team to hold its annual community service day before launching August sum-mer camp. This year, student-athletes spread out across the city and county to lend a hand. Their sites included Kids’ Creation playground, Bronson and Riverside parks, Camp Lakota, Camp Libbey, Riverside Cemetery, city water tower grounds, and the DC campus, all in Defiance; and the Defi-ance County fairgrounds in Hicksville. In addition, football team members sorted and checked warehoused Christmas lights for the city of Defiance.

Many student-athletes at Defiance have taken active roles in leadership and service initiatives campus-wide. Such experi-ences give Defiance College students a greater awareness of a diverse world and its needs as well as the leadership skills to create positive change. Football team members D.J. Brigham, Sean Lightfoot, Tom Foos, Robbie Lakes, Alex Puente, Andy Cessna, Rick Powell, Jake Shepherd, Jake Sigler, Sean Ham-ilton, Matthew Oliver and Ryne Rogers are Defiance College

Service Leaders. Teammate Richard Sherrer is a McMaster Scholar to Belize.

Defiance College is featured for excellence in blending academ-ics with community work by The Princeton Review in its Colleges with a Conscience: 81 Great Schools with Outstanding Commu-nity Involvement. Defiance is included in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for its commitment to community service.

ROB TAYLOR - HEAD COACH, OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR(419) 783-2378 • [email protected]

EIGHTH SEASON

The 2010 campaign will be the eighth of head coach Robert Taylor’s tenure at the helm of the Yellow Jacket football program and his 13th overall with the Purple and Gold. Prior to taking over the reins of the program, Taylor spent five seasons as the team’s defensive coordinator.

Under Taylor’s watchful eye, Defiance has turned into one of the premier teams in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Jackets have finished among the top three teams in the HCAC in four of the last five seasons and have only had two losing records in league play during the Taylor era.

DC has posted a winning record in conference action four times since 2005, boasting a .588 winning percentage in HCAC contests during that time. In that same span, Taylor has guided the Purple and Gold to 26 total victories on the gridiron.

Taylor will enter the 2010 season with 31 victories to his credit, needing only six more to break Malen Luke’s all-time program record of 36 coaching victo-ries with the Yellow Jackets. Along with his rapid climb up DC’s all-time wins list, Taylor earned the HCAC Coach-of-the-Year honor in 2005 and has mentored eight All-Americans and 112 All-HCAC players.

Prior to being promoted to head coach, Taylor compiled and managed one of the best defenses in the nation on a consistent basis and helped lead the Jackets to the HCAC Championship in 2001 for the program’s 12th league title in school history. His 2001 and 2002 squads each gave up fewer than 14 points per game and ranked among the top 25 NCAA teams in multiple statistical categories. The 2002 unit led the HCAC by yielding only 173 passing yards per game, while his special teams work resulted in a conference-leading 22.1 yards per kick-off return.

Before coming to Defiance, Taylor coached the defen-sive line at NCAA Division II St. Joseph’s College (Ind.).

During his time there, Taylor helped lead the Pumas to a Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship in 1996.

As a student-athlete at Albion College in Michigan, Taylor was a part of four-straight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Cham-pionships, two NCAA playoff berths and a NCAA Division III National Championship in 1994. The following year, he was named as the MIAA Most Valuable Player as a defensive end.

Over the duration of his playing and coaching careers, the Grosse Ile, Mich., native has been involved with seven conference champi-onships and four NCAA postseason appearances.

Taylor and his wife, Elizabeth, have four children; Bo, 12; Lexi, 10; Jackson, 8 and Emma, 5.

Chuck Ehret will serve as the offensive line coach, as well as the program’s strength and conditioning coordinator during his first season on the sidelines with the Yellow Jackets.

Ehret comes to DC after spending the past two seasons handling the offensive line at Manchester College. During his tenure with the Spartans, Ehret saw the MC ground game finish among the top two rushing attacks in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference

during each season, while placing four offensive linemen on the All-HCAC squad.

Along with his five years of collegiate coaching, which include stops at Taylor University and Valparaiso University and working camps at the University of Notre Dame, Ehret spent four years as a member of the offensive line during his playing career at Malone University.

Ehret earned a degree in sports management from Malone, before com-pleting a master’s degree in sports administration from Valparaiso.

Nubis Padhye will serve as the quarter-backs coach for the Yellow Jackets dur-ing the 2010 season. Padhye will also spend time as the team’s academic co-ordinator.

Padhye joins the Yellow Jackets after serving as a graduate as-sistant at Ashland University for the past two seasons. Padhye has also spent time on the coaching staffs at Westminster College and Ohio State University, while specializing with the quarterback and wide receiver positions at AU and Ohio State.

Padhye began his coaching career as a student assistant at OSU, where he worked with the Buckeye wide receivers for two years, before mov-ing on to Westminster College for one season. Padhye then accepted the graduate assistant position at Ashland and helped the Eagles reach the NCAA Division II National Playoffs, while coaching a pair of All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference wide receivers.

Padhye owns a degree in business administration from Ohio State and added a master’s degree in sports marketing from Ashland in 2010.

R.J. Chidester is in his second year with the Defiance College coaching staff, af-ter transitioning from being a two-sport athlete at DC to patrolling the sidelines for the Jackets.

The former football and baseball player at Defiance will specialize with the tight ends position once again in 2010, while working to-wards his master’s degree in education.

Chidester served as a student assistant in 2008, assisting head coach Rob Taylor with the quarterbacks, before graduating with a bachelor’s degree in sports management and a minor in wellness and corporate fitness.

During his playing career with DC, Chidester was a four-time letter-man on the diamond as well as the gridiron. Chidester played in all 10 football games his senior season, finishing fourth on the squad with 60 total tackles from his linebacker position.

seasons. Perna served as the head coach for the Aces on the grid-iron for two years, after seven seasons as an assistant coach.

Perna earned a master’s degree in teaching from Marygrove Col-lege in 2005 and currently teaches at Hicksville Elementary.

Nate Breese is in his first year with the Defiance College football program and is primarily responsible for working with the Yellow Jacket wide receivers.

Breese spent the previous two years serv-ing as the offensive coordinator at Toledo Bowsher High School,

where he was responsible for the play calling and specialized with the Rebel quarterbacks and wide receivers. Prior to accepting the position at Bowsher High, Breese spent four seasons working on the coaching staff at Oregon Clay High School.

Breese earned a bachelor’s degree in education from the Univer-sity of Toledo.

NATE BREESE - WIDE RECEIVERS COACH(419) 783-2583FIRST SEASON

The 2010 campaign will be the second for Nate Jensen as the defensive coor-dinator and defensive backs coach at Defiance College. Jensen also serves as the program’s recruiting coordinator.

The first year of the Jensen era at DC was a success, as the Yellow Jackets led the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in scoring defense, while ranking second in rushing defense and total sacks during the 2009 campaign and ended the year with a 35-0 victory against Bluffton. Jensen also saw six of his athletes voted as All-HCAC performers.

Jensen brought a strong familiarity of the DC program when he returned to Defiance as a coach, after playing for Rob Taylor and the Yellow Jackets on the gridiron from 2000-2003. Taylor served as Jensen’s defensive coordinator from 2000-2002 and as his head coach in 2003. During that time, Jensen was a three-year starter at the defensive end position and started on DC’s Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship team in 2001.

Jensen played in 27 total games for the Yellow Jackets and earned All-HCAC honors after setting career highs with 32 tackles, 7.5 hits for lost yardage and four sacks as a senior. When his playing career ended, Jensen completed his degree in mathematics from Defiance in the spring of 2004.

Jensen went on to spend five seasons on the coaching staff at Manchester College, where he coached the defensive line before

specializing with the Spartan linebackers in 2007 and 2008. During that time, Jensen placed 12 of his players on the All-HCAC Team and helped turn MC into one of the top defenses in the conference. That trend continued in 2008, when the Spartans ranked among the top-three teams in the HCAC in multiple defensive statistics.

Along with his coaching experiences at Manchester College, Jen-sen has also gained valuable experience by working multiple camps and clinics. Jensen’s list is highlighted by time helping at camps hosted by Ball State, Manchester and the Indiana High School Ath-letic Association.

Nate is married to his wife, Missy, and the couple currently resides in Defiance, Ohio.

SECOND SEASON

The 2010 season will be the first for Danny Cornely as a member of the Defi-ance College coaching staff.

Cornely is no stranger to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, as he

was a three-time All-HCAC selection for Hanover College. During his time with the Panthers, Cornely earned the Coaches’ Appreciation

Award and was a two-year captain from his linebacker position.

Cornely began his coaching career at Florida International Univer-sity, where he assisted during summer camps. Cornely then served as an assistant strength coach during his final year at HC.

Cornely graduated with a degree in communications from Hanover and will work towards a master’s degree in education during his time at DC.

McCord was a four-year starter and two-time captain at Iona Col-lege in New York and earned a degree in criminal justice, before beginning his coaching career at Ayersville High School. During his time with the Pilots, McCord worked with the defensive backs, prior to assuming the defensive coordinator position in his second season.

JON McCORD - DEFENSIVE BACKS COACH(419) 783-2583SECOND SEASON

Craig McCord is in his seventh season at Defiance and will handle the tags of the special teams coordinator and lineback-ers coach for the fourth-straight year.

McCord earned his undergraduate degree from Ashland University graduate and received his mas-ter’s degree from Bowling Green State University.

McCord came to Ayersville High School in 1974 and started the football program from scratch. In 30 years he turned the Pilots into 12-time league champions, notched five undefeated regular seasons, made eight appearances in the state playoffs and earned a runner-up finish in the state in 1986.

McCord was inducted into the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in April of 2006. During his 35-year ca-reer as a high school coach, McCord tutored 231 all-conference players, 39 All-Ohio players and two Ohio Offensive Backs of the Year. He also saw 18 of his prep standouts move on to play in the collegiate ranks.

The list of accomplishments does not stop there however, as Mc-Cord was also honored as a Jennings Foundation Scholar three times and received the 200-Victory Award from the OHSFCA. Mc-Cord was named The Crescent-News Coach of the Year three times, coached the Defiance Seven County All-Star Game and co-coached the Northwest Ohio Regional All-Star Game.

McCord thrived as a head coach on the court as well, leading the women’s basketball program at Ayersville for 15 seasons. During his tenure, he compiled a 186-143 mark and took the Lady Pilots to the final four in 1992. After the end of the 1992 season, McCord was named as the women’s basketball Coach of the Year by The Crescent-News.

Craig and his wife, Patti, have three grown children and are the grandparents of eight.

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The 2010 season will be the eighth for Rob Taylor at the helm of the Yellow Jacket football program and his 13th with Defiance College.

While each season has included its share of accomplishments and highlights, the 2010 cam-paign could be especially sweet for Taylor, who will enter the year needing six victories to surpass Malen Luke’s (1988-1993) all-time program record of 36 coaching victories on the gridiron for Defiance.

Taylor has piled up 31 wins as a head coach for the Purple and Gold for the second-highest to-tal in program history and is the second-longest tenured coach in program history.

The success that Taylor and his teams have enjoyed stem from the common set of goals that are given to each student-ath-lete that wears the DC uniform.

Those goals start with the DC student-athletes being able to reach their full potential as a person, a student and a football player. Secondly, the student-athlete will receive a college degree of his choice. Third, they will develop and enhance a vigorous work ethic which will translate into success on and

off the football field. Finally, it is the goal of every team during ev-ery year to compete for and win the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship.

Defiance and its 123-man ros-ter will look to accomplish the goal of gaining the 13th confer-ence championship in program history by leaning on an experi-enced offense and a high-flying defense in 2010.

Several factors will play a role in how successful this squad will be, with the three largest being health, execution and the devel-opment of a young roster.

DC will also need to embrace a road-warrior attitude, with the first three games of the year on the road, and only four home games on the 2010 schedule.

The Jackets will return eight starters on offense, highlighted by a very talented junior class that includes six starters ready to take DC’s offensive attack to a new level.

The defense will return only four starters but should also be im-proved, thanks to the expected contributions of a tremendous incoming group that ranks as the top recruiting class during the Taylor era in both size and ability.

QUARTERBACKThe Yellow Jackets will be paced under center by junior Rick Powell. The Second-Team All-HCAC performer will assume the full-time duties at the quar-terback position, after splitting time for parts of his first two campaigns on the gridiron at Defiance. Powell has played in all 20 games during his career and is poised to excel in an of-fensive scheme that is going to be geared directly for his play-making abilities. Those talents allowed Powell to lead DC with 124.2 total yards of offense per game during 2009, while accounting for 10 touchdowns. While a healthy Powell will take nearly every snap this season, Garrett Teague and Aaron Spen-ce will provide the Purple and Gold with a pair of promising quarterback prospects on the junior varsity squads.

BACKFIELDDrew Kuesel will return for his junior season and will be relied on to carry the ground game for the Defiance offensive attack. Kuesel led the Jackets with 58.9 rushing yards per game as a sophomore and has piled up nine rushing touchdowns in his two-year tenure in the DC back-field. Along with his powerful running style, Kuesel became an increasingly dangerous receiv-

ing threat in 2009, hauling in 17 passes for 84 yards. Freshmen Brandon Ross and Joey Chester will team up to provide DC with a pair of speedsters to compli-ment the power of Kuesel in the ground game.

TIGHT ENDA pair of junior returners will look to shoulder the load at the tight end position for the Purple and Gold in 2010. Ryan Black and Andy Cessna could each return to the starting lineup, af-ter combining for 21 catches, 178 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns one year ago. Sophomore Patrick Hartman gained valuable time on the DC junior varsity squad during his rookie year and could crack the lineup to spell the veteran duo of Black and Cessna.

WIDE RECEIVERA successful DC squad will need to utilize its talented crop of wide receivers more than it did in 2009, and Nick Wiedenhoft and Jon Carrabino will be the main targets for the Jackets’ air attack. Wiedenhoft earned All-HCAC honors as a freshman in 2008, and went on to lead De-fiance with 32 receptions and four scores in his second sea-son. Carrabino stormed onto the collegiate scene to log 25 catches for 396 yards and three

Harvey Morris could contribute during his senior year, while sophomore Rashad Hunt and freshman Bobby Pardun could also make their marks on the DC offense.

OFFENSIVE LINEPerhaps the only unknown on the offensive side of the ball for Defiance comes in the form of a very young offensive line. The unit will be anchored by senior Brian Baumgart and All-HCAC ju-nior Kent Corthell. Junior Bryant Green, along with sophomores Seth Kimberlin and Kyle Gu-zowski will get the first look at filling out DC’s front line. Several promising new faces will also get an opportunity to claim sig-nificant roles, with Mitch Smith, Jacob Pack, Corey Williams and Nick Hilliard highlighting the crop of newcomers.

DEFENSIVE LINEDefiance will showcase an up-tempo defense ample with speed up and down the roster. That includes the trenches, where First-Team All-HCAC se-nior defensive end, Austin Hed-derly, will lead the charge after posting 46 tackles and three

sacks one year ago. Hedderly will be joined on the line by junior Joemese Scott, who is returning to the lineup after missing the 2009 campaign. Sophomore Gregg Pickett will see increased time, with senior Alex Puente and freshmen Michael Carrabino, Frank Furnari and Bennie Woods bolstering the front line of de-fense for the Yellow Jackets.

LINEBACKERDespite not returning a single starter at the linebacker position from 2009, the Jackets will un-leash an explosive new wave of talent on opposing offenses in 2010. Senior Robbie Lakes will provide leadership for the young group, highlighted by second-year players James Buari and Hunter Robertson and freshman transfer Patrick McDonald.

DEFENSIVE BACKThe deepest and most talented position for Defiance this sea-son just might be the second-ary, where All-HCAC standouts Kyle Longsdorf and Anthony Sierra are joined by upperclass-men Ricky Sherrer and Eric Ru-bio. Sophomore Brad Sealy will also see time, while freshmen Cameron Rude, Kadeem Wat-son, Luis Zequiera and Chrys Kil-lebrew will all play major roles. The catalyst for this group will be Longsdorf, who returns for

his final collegiate campaign af-ter leading the HCAC and rank-ing among the nation’s best with 116 total tackles from his safety position as a junior. Rubio will join Longsdorf to round out a game-changing safety tandem, as the junior notched 49 hits and two interceptions last sea-son. Sierra will hold down one of the cornerback positions, af-ter bursting onto the collegiate scene to lead DC with five inter-ceptions as a rookie in 2009.

SPECIAL TEAMSThe special teams units for Defiance will begin and end on the foot of All-HCAC performer, Tom Foos. The senior will handle kickoffs, punts, field goals and point-after attempts for the Yel-low Jackets in 2010. Foos has excelled as a punter during his career with the Purple and Gold, averaging 38.9 yards per boot as a junior and sticking 23 of his career-high 71 punts inside the 20-yard line. Along with his punt-ing exploits, Foos has connect-ed on three field goals during his collegiate career, including a 38-yard, game-winning kick in overtime of DC’s 31-28 win at Hanover on November 1, 2008. With Foos taking the kicks, An-thony Sierra, Jon Carrabino, Kadeem Watson and Chrys Kil-lebrew will handle the returns for DC in 2010.
