Head coach Chris Phillips begins her fi fth season with the Gardner-Webb volleyball team. She led the team to a four-win improvement during her fi rst year as the Lady Bulldogs’ head coach and guided the Bulldogs to their fi rst-ever postseason appearance during the 2006 season. Phillips came to Boiling Springs after spending 11 years as the head coach at Liberty and fi ve seasons guiding the program at Lincoln Junior College in Lincoln, Ill. In 2008, Phillips guided the program through its fi rst season in the Big South Conference. She helped the team pick up wins in its fi rst two conference matches, including the fi rst-ever victory over Winthrop. Under her direction, middle blocker Laura Wilcox earned six New Balance Freshman of the Week nods en route to being named Big South Freshman of the Year in addition to making the all-conference second team. In 2007, the last in the Atlantic Sun for the Lady Bulldogs, Phillips’ squad once again turned heads after being picked near the bottom of the league during the preseason polls. In addition to tying the school record for wins (14) for the second straight season, the program established a new benchmark for consecutive wins with six. The Bulldogs etched their name in all 17 statistcal categories in the school record books, including establishing or tying fi ve new marks. Regina Feagin earned the program’s fi rst-ever Player of the Week honors while later setting the single-season and career assist records. All but one career statistical record was set by a member of the 2007 squad. With solid play from everyone the entire season, GWU defeated UNF and Davidson for the fi rst time in school history while also sweeping fellow A-Sun Conference foe Lipscomb. During the 2006 season, Phillips’ team tied the school record for wins (14). Feagin earned Atlantic Sun all-freshman team honors after shattering the school record for assists in a year with 1,280. Phillips has led the program to a nine-win improvement since the 2004 season. In all, Phillips has accumulated an impressive record of 381 wins and 324

She continued that tradition upon her arrival in Boiling Springs. Phillips also has a lengthy track record of directing and coaching highly successful volleyball clinics at colleges and high schools all across the country. Assistant coach Phuong Luong begins his fourth season with the Gardner-Webb volleyball program. He is primarily responsible for handling the setter training, offensive systems, individual and team defense in addition to recruiting. Luong spent the previous three years as an assistant volleyball coach at ETSU before coming to Boiling Springs. Luong has helped guide the Bulldogs to two of the best statistical seasons since the move to Division I. The 2006 team recorded more kills (14.04/g), assists (12.86/g), service aces (2.02/g), digs (15.79/g) and total blocks (1.69/g) than the 2005 season. The team set single-season school records for kills per game, service aces per game and assists per game. The squad had the second-highest total blocks per game in school history as well as the highest hitting percentage. The 15.79 digs per game were the third highest for GWU in a single season. However, his 2007 team was even more impressive. The squad set school records for kills (1,634), kills per game (14.09), assists (1,519) and assists per game (13.09). The team had the second-most digs in school history (2,115) and the second-most block assists (229) in the program’s young Division I history. The squad was among the top-fi ve all time in each of the 17 statistical categories that GWU maintains. In 2008, the team accounted for the fourth-most assists in school history (1,128) despite the change in the scoring system per set from 30 to 25. Also in 2008, Luong’s fi rst freshmen class set since coming to Gardner-Webb set new heights, as it had a freshman named the Big South Conference Freshman of the Year and also be named to an all-conference team. While attending Ferris State Univerisity, Luong played four years with the school’s highly competitive club squad as well as two seasons with the Grand Rapids (Michigan) AAU Junior Olympic 18’s Elite Team. From there, he spent two more years playing in the Midwest Professional Volleyball Association. In the spring of 1995, Luong graduated from Ferris State with a bachelor of science degree in business management and a minor in fi nance. Phuong’s fi rst coaching position came as an assistant coach at East Grand Rapids High School, where the team earned conference and district

championships in 1991 and 1992 under his leadership. His fi rst head coaching opportunity came with the Reed City Smash 18’s Elite Squad and he then took over head coaching responsibilities at Big Rapids High School from 1994-1996. Along with his duties at Big Rapids, Luong also served as a graduate assistant coach for the Ferris State women’s volleyball program. His duties included analyzing video for scouting purposes, coordinating team offensive plays during matches and assisting the coaching staff with practice and team workouts. In just one season at the head of the West Michigan’s Jr. 18’s AAU volleyball program, Luong led the squad to a fi rst-place fi nish at the Michigan State AAU Junior National Championship, and all six of his senior competitors went on to play volleyball at the collegiate level. After his time coaching at various levels in Michigan, Luong’s coaching career soared to the next level as he became the fi rst assistant of the University of New Hampshire women’s team from 1996-1998 where he helped the Wildcats reach the conference tournament fi nals in his second year as coach. The next step in his coaching career would keep Luong on the East coast taking over fi rst assistant responsibilities at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, where the team posted back-to-back 20-win seasons. This led him to the head coaching position at Wentworth Institute of Technology men’s volleyball program. At Wentworth, Luong led his squad to conference championships from 1998-2000 and fi nished 13th in the fi nal AVCA Div. III national rankings during the 1999 campaign. Luong also spent two years as the coordinator with the New Hampshire Seacoast Junior Olympic Volleyball Program. He served on the board of directors committee and coached the 16’s and 18’s Elite Teams. Under his direction, the East Coast 18’s Elite team captured the silver division team championship at games held on the campus of Penn State University. During his time in various coaching capacities, Luong has held duties planning practice, game preparation, coordinating recruits, scouting, game management, compliance, coordinating summer camps and tracking student-athlete academic progress.

SEASON OUTLOOKSEASON OUTLOOK

Brett Brett Wilson Wilson

Lauren Lauren EvansEvans

The 2009 season is one of both excitement and uncertainty for the Lady Bulldogs as Coach Phillip’s squad is perhaps one of the youngest teams in the nation. Having lost three highly talented seniors in Bethany Martin, Katie Matykowski and Heidi Steinebrunner - to graduation from the 2008 season, the young Lady Bulldogs squad will have only three upperclassmen on the eleven-man roster. Seniors Regina Feagin, Brett Wilson and Jessica Clayton will look to not only lead the Lady Bulldogs in attempting to increase its win total from a year ago, but will also play vital rolls in the guidance of the four sophomores, including 2008 Big South Freshman of the Year Laura Wilcox, and four freshmen that comprise the rest of the team. “We are excited about this season,” commented Coach Phillips. “We are very young, but are very excited about the talent that these sophomores and freshmen can bring to the table.”

DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST/LIBERO With Matykowski, who became the all-time career leader in digs for GWU last season graduating; it is now senior Brett Wilson’s turn to hold down the libero position for the Lady Bulldogs. Wilson, who has worked hard and waited patiently for her chance of the last three seasons, will get it in 2009 looking to provide both stability and leadership on the fl oor. “Brett made great improvements from the fall heading into the spring,” stated Phillips. “She can play good defense and seems to be more of a defensive specialists than a libero.” Depth at the libero and defensive specialist position will come by way of another Wilson, in sophomore Brittany Wilson. Wilson, who is versatile and could see some time at the outside hitter position as well, has experience at the defensive specialist and libero position. “Brittany is very familiar with the positions because she played it so often during her club ball,” Phillips said.

OUTSIDE HITTERSThe outside hitter position consists of a lot of depth for Coach Phillips’

and the Lady Bulldogs, depth that is comprised of two sophomores and three freshmen. Sophomore Brittany Wilson, who saw some action at the position last season as a rookie, will have a chance to compete for a starting spot and should see plenty of time at the position. Fellow classmate Lauren Evans, who is looking to bounce back from an injury that sidelined her for much of her rookie season a year ago, will also compete for time at the outside hitter spot, bringing solid size and fundamentals to the fl oor. “Lauren is a player,” stated Phillips. “She is coming off an injury, but is a hard worker and should be fi ne. She passes well, plays hard and can make a difference on our team.”Newcomers Molly Rhyne, Melissa Richie and Dominique Bray can also line up for the Lady Bulldogs at the outside spot. “Molly brings a lot of energy to the court,” Phillips said. “She is pretty laid back with her personality, but is excitable as a player. She loves to bring in her teammates and doesn’t panic if things aren’t going well. Molly is very sure and confi dent of herself and her team. She is a wonderful type of player to bring in.” “Melissa is a solid player,” Phillips said. “She is fundamentally sound and is a great passer. Melissa hits the ball well and is a great team leader. She is used to carrying her high school team and comes in with that aspect, which means she has a lot of confi dence.” “Dominique is very strong and athletic,” Phillips said. She can play a lot of different spots and can be used wherever she is needed. We are really comfortable with her coming in because she is so versatile.”

Regina Regina FeaginFeagin

SEASON OUTLOOKSEASON OUTLOOKSETTER Senior Regina Feagin and sophomore Evan Moffi tt will split time at the setter position, similar to what the two did in 2008. Feagin, the school’s all-time career assist leader, will continue to get most of the touches for the Bulldogs in her fi nal season. Feagin, who is also in the top-10 in career service aces and digs in GWU history, will also be looked to as a leader both on and off the court for this young Bulldog squad. “Regina understands what we want to run and she can be a leader on the court, “ commented Coach Phillips. “Regina has three years of experience under her belt and knows when to set her teammates up and when to attack the other team as well.” Moffi tt, who saw time at the setter position last season as a freshman, should again see time at the position in 2009. “Evan gained experience at the position last season,” stated Phillips. “She continues to improve and work hard at her quick sets and is progressing quickly.” Depth at the setter position will come from Bray, as the freshman’s versatility and ability to play multiple positions will play an important roll in not only her time on the fl oor, but in the depth of the Lady Bulldogs in many different positions.

RIGHT SIDE Like the outside hitter position, the right side will be manned by an underclassmen, as Moffi tt and freshman Carolina Solano-Bloodworth will both see time there. Moffi tt, who saw some time at the right side position last season, is likely to some time there this season, as her intelligence and knowledge of the game is essential on the fl oor. “Evan has played this position before – and has played it extremely well, giving us a viable option, “ Phillips said. Coming off helping her club team win a National Championship at the

junior level this summer, Solano-Bloodworth will compete immediately for the starting right side spot. “Carolina is a left-handed player that plays the right side,” Phillips said. “She has great court sense and hits the ball well. Carolina has good hands and is there for the block. She will add a different dimension on the team because she’s left handed. Playing for a good club team, she’ll be ready when she comes in. Carolina has a tremendous work ethic.”

MIDDLE BLOCKER In the middle, the Lady Bulldogs return two talented blockers in senior Jessica Clayton and sophomore Laura Wilcox. Clayton, who missed much of last season due to an injury, will provide help at the middle blocker position, particularly with her experience. “Jessica is a gamer,” commented Phillips. “She’ll fi nd a way to make the big play.” Wilcox, the 2008 Big South Freshman Player of the Year and second team all-conference selection, will look to improve on what was a standout freshman campaign in 2008. With Bethany Martin, the career total blocks leader in GWU history having graduated, Wilcox becomes the leader on the front line for the Lady Bulldogs. “Laura is a true middle blocker,” stated Phillips. “She can slide and hit quick. Laura blocks extremely well and does a lot of really good things for us.”

SCHEDULE The Lady Bulldogs schedule in 2008 was perhaps the toughest schedule in GWU history, as Coach Phillips’ squad played the likes of Arizona, Tennessee, Illinois, Dayton, Duke and San Jose State in non-conference action on top of its fi rst full season in the always tough Big South Conference. With its fi rst year in the conference under its belt and a challenging non-conference schedule which consists of only nine away bouts, the Lady Bulldogs are set to make waves in 2009.

An extremely young Gardner-Webb volleyball team competed hard in its fi rst season of Big South Conference play and showed promise of bright things to come in the near future. Although the record was not great, the team came together and learned what it will take to become a top-fl ight contender not only in the Big South, but also the NCAA. The senior class of Bethany Martin, Katie Matykowski and Heidi Steinebrunner etched their names in GWU lore while helping the program make the transition into the ever-tough Big South. The trio also assisted a talented freshman class during a hard season. The senior class was arguably the most productive of any class to come through Gardner-Webb since the school’s move to Division I. Martin ended her stellar career as the program’s all-time career leader in total blocks with 228. She also fi nished second in sets played (461), third in kills (1,060) and tied for eighth in service aces (76). Matykowski could conceivably challenge for a spot in Gardner-Webb’s Hall of Fame in a few years with the numbers that she put up during her tenure. She fi nished fi rst in digs, service aces and sets played while also being among the top-10 in assists. Nobody on the current GWU roster has a chance to catch Matykowski in digs as she fi nished her career with 1,874, almost three hundred more than the second-place person and over 900 more than the most active member on the Red and Black squad. The Sun Prairie, Wis., native sits atop the aces list with 146 and is in fi rst with 463 sets played. Matykowski stands in ninth-place on the assists list with 98. Steinebrunner, although only in a GWU uniform for two seasons, had an outstanding career. She put away 643 kills, which is good enough for fi fth on the all-time list.

2008 REVIEW2008 REVIEW

The seniors paved the way for the rookie class, which had a dominant force in Laura Wilcox and an all-around student-athlete in Evan Moffi tt. Wilcox powered home a team-best 318 kills and notched a .239 attack percentage, which also rated best on the squad. She led the team with 53 total blocks while also registering a respectable 152 digs. Throughout the season, Wilcox continued to impress her peers and colleagues as she garnered six New Balance Freshman of the Week honors from the conference offi ce. Prior to the conference tournament, Wilcox earned Big South Freshman of the Year accolades while also being named second-team all-conference. Moffi tt continued to gain more playing time as the season wore on once she showed the promise of being a good fi t in multiple positions. Moffi tt played in 112 sets and although her numbers were not spectacular, they were very solid considering she was used in various facets of head coach Chris Phillips’ game plan. Fellow fi rst-year student-athlete Lauren Evans had glimpses of how good she will be the next three years. Coming off surgery prior to her arrival, Evans stepped up to lead the way at times despite never being 100 percent. The powerful right arm of Evans notched 14 kills in the Bulldogs’ fi rst-ever victory over Winthrop while chipping 12 kills in a win over Presbyterian. With a full off-season to recover, Evans has a chance to make a dramatic impact next year with the departure of Steinebrunner. Freshman Brittany Wilson showed she was the glue that kept the team together. When things weren’t going great on the court, Wilson was there to pick her teammates up. Near the end of the regular season, Wilson stepped up her game and saw more time on the court than she had at the outset. In the win over Winston-Salem State, Wilson notched a team-best 11 digs to go along with two aces. In the barnburner at Davidson, she amassed a career-high nine kills, showing Phillips that she can make a difference for the team. The junior class has been consistent throughout their time at Gardner-Webb. Regina Feagin already has established herself as the most dominant passer in the school’s history with 3,543 assists. Feagin, who has 114 aces, has a chance

2008 REVIEW2008 REVIEWto be the most productive behind the service line in the program’s lore as well. This past season, she shared time at setter with Moffi tt, but still nearly reached 1,000 assists in spite of the shared duty and the lowering of each set’s point total from 30 to 25. Hit with injuries, the Bulldogs were forced to move Matykowski to the front row, opening a spot for Brett Wilson as the libero near midseason. In the role that Wilson had waited two and a half years to play, she emerged as the front-runner to Matykowski’s job next season. Wilson got her fi rst career start at home against Liberty and thrived with a team-best 17 digs in the fi ve-set heartbreaking loss. Wilson continued to prove a steady force the remainder of the season as she had double-digit digs efforts against Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern. One of the problems that lingered throughout the season was the injury to Jessica Clayton. A projected starter and valuable player, Clayton played in just 22 matches after getting injured in the season-opening tournament. After starting the season out at the Wildcat Classic against three formidable opponents, including Pac-10 power Arizona, the Red and Black returned for its home tournament, the Runnin’ Bulldog Classic. There, the team put together an impressive 3-2 victory over Charleston Southern. In front of the home fans, GWU struggled in the opening set before bouncing back to tie it before intermission. Down 2-1, the team fought off the Lady Bucs in the fourth, winning 25-23, forcing a deciding fi fth set. The Bulldogs won 17-15 behind the strength of Steinebrunner’s 17 kills. Wilcox and Evans had 15 and 12 kills, respectively. Fifty-fi ve of the team’s assists came from Feagin, propelling the offensive to an explosive night. The next afternoon GWU dispatched Winston-Salem State 3-0. In the 65-minute match, Wilcox led the way with 10 kills while Brittany Wilson added her team-best 11 digs. On the road again for the next three weekends, the Bulldogs suffered through a losing drought entering conference play. Then, on Sept. 26, GWU traveled to Clinton, S.C., for its fi rst-ever Big South Conference match. There, the team bested fellow league newcomer Presbyterian by a 3-0 score. Steinebrunner

slammed home a team-best 13 kills while Wilcox posted a double-double effort. In the match, Matykowski dug up 17 attacks. The next afternoon, the Bulldogs were at home to face Winthrop, a team they had never defeated. After losing the fi rst set, GWU bounced back to take the next two by identical 26-24 scores. The team lost the fourth set and were down 14-11 before a side-out gave the ball to Feagin to serve. Feagin did the damage and eventually ended the contest on an ace as the squad won 16-14 for not only its fi rst-ever victory over Winthrop, but also its fi rst-ever Big South home win. The team continued to fi ght hard the rest of the season, winning a 3-2 match at home against Presbyterian, but lost four fi ve-set affairs the remainder of the way. Even in the matches that the Bulldogs were swept, there was an air of confi dence in the team that could be felt. The goals for the season were not reached, but the Bulldogs have climbed a step or two up from where they were before. Part of that was because of the upperclassmen, but part was due to the freshmen bringing a winning mentality to the mix. Regardless of the record, the 2008 volleyball team will be one that is talked about for seasons to come for many reasons. Some of the reasons include the beginning of conference play in the Big South while other reasons are more noteworthy. It marked the fi rst time the program has had a Freshman of the Year in the league and the squad had its fi rst all-conference honoree in a number of years. The main reason, however, is because the team took a giant leap to where it wants to be next year. The squad hit a few bumps along the way, but has come out stronger than it was prior to the season and better than it was in August because of the student-athletes coming into the program and the ones leaving. The 2008 team defi nitely laid a solid foundation for great things in the 2009 campaign.

Dr. A. Frank Bonner, in his fi fth year as the president of Gardner-Webb University, took offi ce on May 2, 2005, and was inaugurated on April 6, 2006. Bonner is no stranger to Gardner-Webb, having been a part of the University family since 1987. A native of Greenville, S.C., Bonner graduated from Furman University in 1969, has a M.A. degree from the University of Georgia and earned a Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a faculty member and Associate Dean at Anderson College in Anderson, S.C., prior to beginning his career in Boiling Springs as Vice President for Academic Affairs.

ADMINISTRATIONADMINISTRATION In 1992, Bonner was promoted to provost and senior vice president at Gardner-Webb, a post he held until assuming his current role in 2005. After a comprehensive, national search for the university’s new president, chairman of the presidential search committee and the board of trustees, Frank Beam, said, “We came to the conclusion that we had the most qualifi ed candidate right here at the university.” Bonner succeeded Dr. Frank Campbell, who served Gardner-Webb University as president from October, 2002 until June, 2005. Active in civic life and in the community, Bonner has served on the boards of the United Way, the YMCA, and Communities in Schools, and he serves on the Cleveland County Sports Commission. He is a past chairman of the Cleveland County Chamber, a past president of the Shelby Rotary Club, and a Sunday School teacher and deacon at First Baptist Church in Shelby. Bonner is also a retired Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. During Bonner’s time as provost, Gardner-Webb emerged as a vibrant institution for higher learning, offi cially moving from college to university in 1993. The institution’s academic reputation has steadily improved during Bonner’s time in Boiling Springs, with a tremendous faculty and consistently evolving curriculum. Bonner is married to the former Florence “Flossie” Black of Chester, S.C., also a graduate of Furman University. They are parents of two adult daughters and four grandchildren.

Gardner-Webb alumnus Chuck Burch is in his 13th year as Vice President for Athletics and his 28th year in athletics administration. The Charlotte, N.C., native spearheaded the Bulldogs move into Division I athletics, which resulted in Gardner-Webb’s addition to the Big South Conference as an associate member for football in 2001, and GWU’s move to the Big South as a full member – which became offi cial on July 1, 2008. Burch oversees all athletic operations at Gardner-Webb, including management and supervision of athletic programs, facilities and budgets. During his career at GWU, Burch has overseen across-the-board improvements in facilities and the addition of fi ve new sports since arriving in 1997. A sixth sport, men’s swimming was added in 2007-08. Burch is also responsible for continued improvements in the quality and

quantity of Gardner-Webb’s athletics staff – with a number of full-time positions created to assist and enhance the entire department. GWU athletics has seen a steady increase in academic performance since Burch’s arrival, and the department has posted a combined GPA above 3.0 in each of the last two academic years. Gardner-Webb’s fi nal year in the Atlantic Sun Conference was fruitful, with several notable wins and the usual high number of strong academic performances by the Bulldogs’ student-athletes. GWU enjoyed its most successful athletics year as a Division I member in 2006-07. Gardner-Webb won its fi rst Atlantic Sun Conference Academic Championship, unseating Belmont University for the title. The Bulldogs also fi nished third in the men’s and women’s combined sports standings – a very impressive effort in the race for the inaugural Bill Bibb Trophy. Gardner-Webb’s men’s soccer team captured the imagination of faces across Cleveland County during its run to the 2006 A-Sun Championship and the NCAA Tournament second round. National qualifi ers in Track & Field, swimming and wrestling highlighted competitive success for the Bulldogs in 2006-2007. Burch, a graduate of Independence (N.C.) High in Charlotte, and former member of Gardner-Webb’s football team, spent 1991-1997 as Director of Athletics at Liberty (Va.) University, and was instrumental in a successful and well run department in Lynchburg as well. He also served Liberty as Associate Director of Athletics (1988-1990), Assistant Director of Athletics (1984-1988), Sports Information Director (1986-1988) and Assistant Director of Sports Information (1982-1984). After graduating from Gardner-Webb in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in Social Science, Burch, 52, earned his master’s degree from Eastern Kentucky University in 1982. His wife, Franki, holds a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Virginia, and is a member of the faculty at Gardner-Webb. The couple has three children, Travis, a recent graduate of Furman University, Danielle, a sophomore soccer player at Brevard (N.C.) College and Amy (15).

Senior Woman Administrator Pam Scruggs is in her 30th year of service with Gardner-Webb University athletics, and remains one of the most vital components of the program’s success. Scruggs has served as Associate Athletics Director and SWA since 2000. Scurggs provides the athletics department with consistent and dependable performance in a number of crucial administrative areas. Her primary responsibilities include monitoring the athletics department budgets, monitoring the operation of the department’s women’s varsity programs, overseeing game-day operations and assisting in the administration of the University’s entire athletics program. Scruggs plays an invaluable role in the success of Bulldog athletics. Pam and her husband, John, have one daughter, Bonnie.

ATHLETIC TRAININGATHLETIC TRAININGAn integral part of the entire Gardner-Webb University athletics program, the Athletic Training Program emphasizes the importance of wellness in the teams’ pursuit of success. Under the supervision of Kevin Jones, ATC, and the rest of the Athletic Training faculty and staff, athletic training students complete part of their clinical education with the University’s 21 varsity sports. Jones and his staff work toward the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The athletic taining students at GWU are fortunate to have a faculty and staff of nine certifi ed athletic trainers and a cooperative intercollegiate athletics staff to enhance their learning experience. The clinical education that is conducted while serving the student-athletes at Gardner-Webb University allows for comprehensive medical care in a learning environment. The athletic training educational program recently completed its full accreditation by CAAHEP, marking an exciting moment in the program’s history. Athletic training students are able to pursue a B.S. in Athletic Training through the Department of Physical Education and Sport Studies. Upon graduation, athletic training students must complete a three-part examination conducted by the National Athletic Trainer’s Association’s Board of Certifi cation to become Certifi ed Athletic Trainers (ATC). One of the most respected academic majors on campus, the Gardner-Webb Athletic Training educational program boasts a growing enrollment and provides students with fi rst-class instruction and practical experience in their chosen fi eld of study. Currently, Gardner-Webb graduates are working with NFL teams, colleges and universities, high schools and physical therapy clinics. After their academic careers at Gardner-Webb, many students also choose to seek graduate assistant positions at colleges and universities around the nation.

Perhaps there is no greater time to observe the academic quality of Gardner-Webb University than right now. All of the necessary factors for academic excellence – faculty, students, resources, curriculum – are working in conjunction with one another to gain widespread acclaim from alumni, friends, trustees, the media and the community. Over 130 full-time faculty members comprise a group of educators at GWU being heralded as the "premiere class of instructors ever assembled at the University." Over 80 percent of the faculty hold a Ph.D. or equivalent, and many boast of well-documented activities in the business and professional worlds. With a student-to-faculty ratio of 15 to 1, Gardner-Webb is able to provide personal instruction to its students, who now number over 4,000, making Gardner-Webb the fifth-largest private institution in North Carolina. New technological features in our library enhance the learning experience for a higher quality student. The incoming freshman class this year averaged over 1020 on the SAT and a 3.5 GPA.

Gardner-Webb University’s campus has experienced tremendous growth and improvements to facilities, both academic and athletic, over the past 10 years. The school provides students with an excellent environment for learning and enjoying the college experience to its fullest. One of the newest facilities on campus, the Suttle Wellness Center is one of the most modern facilities of its kind on any campus in America. Whether you’re there to play billiards, ping-pong or air hockey, you can relax with friends in its cozy atmosphere. A spacious area with countless fi tness machines and free weights is located in the heart of the building, providing a top-notch facility for aerobic and anaerobic training for the entire student body. The Complex is also home to the legendary Bost Gymnasium, where countless intramural contests are held. University Commons, a set of apartment-style dormitories just adjacent to the beautiful Lake Hollifi eld Complex, is the newest and most impressive living facility on campus. A cutting-edge concept in on-campus housing, University Commons combines all the amenities of comfortable living – full kitchens, spacious living quarters, washer/dryers, and private bedrooms and baths. Internet connections and instant access to the GWU technology center make living conditions both modern and functional. Six separate buildings comprise University Commons, which has quickly become a popular choice among resident students. The postcard site of the University, the Lake Hollifi eld Complex, features the most modern bell tower in America on its six-acre facility. Walking trails, a picturesque lake, gazebo and swings are popular features for GWU students, faculty and staff, as well as residents from the surrounding communities. A newer feature of campus, the Broyhill Adventure Course has an impressive ropes course and climbing wall used by church and student groups, businesses and organizations to teach leadership and team-building skills.

Located just beyond Lake Hollifi eld, the Broyhill Adventure Course is nestled in a wooded area that provides the perfect outdoor setting for physical exercise and activity. The Broyhill Course is one of the many campus features that make Gardner-Webb a nationally recognized character-building institution, an award designated by the Templeton Foundation of Washington, D.C. New technological features on our campus enhance the learning experience for a higher quality student. For example, Gardner-Webb’s Dover Library provides students with all the research and reference tools necessary for undergraduate and graduate educational pursuits. A helpful staff, computer databases, stacks of research materials and NC Live – a special computer system linking library resources from around the world – are all featured. One of the newest buildings on campus is also the oldest. Hamrick Hall, the only building remaining from the original GWU campus, was dormant for several years before being completely refurbished with ultra-modern amenities. It now houses the School of Business, with state-of-the-art computer labs, offi ces for business faculty and a 310-seat multimedia auditorium. Newly renovated Ernest W. Spangler Stadium, once voted one of the best venues to watch collegiate football in North Carolina, now seats over 7,500 and provides fans with a cozy atmosphere for enjoying a college football Saturday. The brand new football center, opened in September, 2004, houses state-of-the-art offi ces, locker rooms and a 5,600-square foot weight room which is open to all Gardner-Webb student-athletes. The Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center, opened in 1983, serves as the home for Gardner-Webb University volleyball and basketball, providing the teams with a state-of-the-art facility in which to train and play. The 3,500-seat arena houses two volleyball courts and the GWU volleyball locker room. A new volleyball offi ce complex, located in a ‘skybox’ section in the upper level inside the arena was completed in September of 2003.
