After finishing second at the CoastalCollegiate Swimming Association champi-onships for the past two seasons, theDavidson Wildcat men’s swimming and div-ing team is hoping to finally break throughfor a title.

Leading the charge for the Wildcats willbe 2009 CCSA Male Freshman of the YearCurtis Chaney, who will be joined by fellowDavidson record-holders Patrick Whitman,Miller Williams and Geofffrey Peitz.

In addition to the four record-holders, theWildcat men’s roster boasts seven DavidsonTop-10 performers, while the addition of sixhighly talented freshmen round out a teamthat could be title contenders in 2009-10.

distance freestyleThe Wildcats will need to replace the

school record-holder in both the 1000 and1650 freestyles, Merritt Peele, in the distancefreestyle events. Sophomore Brian Seo swaminto seventh-place on the Davidson Top-10performers list in both events (9:51.89, 1000free; 16:23.96, 1650 free) and should continueto improve upon his freshman season times.

After being named Male FreshmanSwimmer of the Year at the 2009 CCSAs,Chaney will continue to lead the Wildcats inthe mid-distance freestyle events. In hisfreshman season, Chaney won both the 200and 500 freestyles in school-record times atthe CCSAs, 1:37.72 and 4:26.89, respectively.

Freshman Wills Cooper could also givethe Wildcats another presence in the distancefreestyles.

sprint freestyleWhitman is the school record-holder in

the 50 free, winning the event with a time of20.66 at the 2009 CCSAs. Classmate BryanDroll finished second in the event with a timeof 20.79, also placing him second on theDavidson Top-10 performers list in the event.

The pair are also Davidson Top-10 per-formers in the 100 free, with Droll third witha time of 45.69 and Whitman seventh with atime of 46.50.

Seniors Brad Carman and Miller Williamsare also Davidson Top-10 performers whoshould contribute in the sprint freestyles and

to the relays. Whitman, Droll and Carman seta new school record in the 200 free relay aseason ago, while Droll, Carman and Chaneycontributed to the record-setting 400 freerelay.

butterflyWilliams set a school record with a runner-

up time of 49.65 in the 100 fly and returns asthe ‘Cats’ best option in the event for his finalseason.

Sophomore Joe Burquist is second with atime of 50.72 from the CCSAs, and Carman isthird with his time of 50.88 from the leaguechampionships.

Sophomore Geoffrey Peitz made a splashfor the Wildcats in his rookie campaign, set-ting a pair of school records, including the 200fly with a time of 1:51.84 at the league cham-pionships. Peitz also ranks eighth on the Top-10 performers in the 100 flys with a time of51.80 from a dual meet against East Carolina.

Williams is also a Top-10 performer in the200 fly, ranking fourth with a time of 1:54.11,and sophomore David Kerman is 10th with atime of 1:56.05.

Freshmen Cooper, Tim Keating, ChrisLeonard and Drew Onken could also make animpact for the ‘Cats in the butterfly events.

backstrokeDavidson will have to replace school

record-holder Scott Frantz in both backstrokeevents, but has the depth to do so.

Peitz swam the second-best time inDavidson history in the 100 back (50.51) at the2009 CCSAs and could challenge Frantz’stime of 50.21 this season. Peitz also is a Top-10performer in the 200 back with a time of1:52.94 from the 2009 Nike Invitational.

Junior Tennant Brastow is a Wildcat Top-10 performer in both backstroke events, ranked fifth in the 100 back and eighth in the200 with a times of 52.00 and 1:53.81, respec-tively, from the 2009 CCSAs.

Sophomores David Kerman and JoeBurquist are also Top-10 performers thatshould contribute again in the backstrokes in2009-10. Kerman’s time of 1:52.04 (2009CCSAs) lists him fourth in the 200 back, while

Burquist’s time of 52.77 (2009 CCSAs) rankshim seventh in the 100.

The Wildcats also add freshman MarcusCarson, who could contribute in the back-stroke events.

breaststrokeWhitman is the lone returning Wildcat

with a Top-10 performer time in the 100breaststroke. Whitman’s time of 59.24 at the2009 CCSAs ranks him eighth in the event.

Likewise, Kerman returns as the lone Top-10 performer in the 200 breaststroke, with atime of 2:10.51 from last season’s leaguechampionships placing him 10th in the event.

Junior Ben Lucas is also a capable swim-mer for the Wildcats in the breaststrokeevents.

The Wildcats also expect freshman Onkento contribute immediately in the breaststrokeevents. A talented breaststroker, he has theability to compete for conference titles.

individual medleyPeitz rewrote the Davidson record in the

200 IM with a time of 1:51.88 at the CCSAsand could challenge his own best again. Heis also a Davidson Top-10 performer, rankingeighth in the 400 IM behind a time of 4:10.14at the 2009 CCSAs.

Kerman became the runner-up on theTop-10 performers list with a time of 4:03.43in the 400 IM at the 2009 league champi-onships and returns for another shot at therecord in 2009-10.

The Davidson women are entering theirthird season as members of the CoastalCollegiate Swimming Association, hoping toextend their past success to the 2009-10 sea-son.

Both the Wildcat men and women arecoming off runner-up finishes a season ago,but for the Davidson women, the goal is torepeat their championship performance fromthe inaugural 2007-08 season.

With 14 upperclassmen steadily winningindividual titles and rewriting records, led bystandouts Lindsey Martin and Emily Castleand complemented by nine sophomores andfreshmen, the Wildcats are poised for a returnto greatness.

distance freestyleThe Wildcats will face the challenge of

replacing the school record-holder in the1000 free and the 1650 free, Alanna Ream, inthe distance freestyle events, but juniorJessica Delgehausen could have a breakoutseason.

Entering her third season, Delgehausensits third on the Davidson Top-10 performerslist in the 1000 free with a time of 10:22.13from a dual meet at Georgia Southern. Shealso is fourth on the Top-10 performers list inthe 1650 free with a time of 17:21.19 from the2009 Davidson Invitational.

Senior Caitlin Sheetz swam a Davidsonbest in the 500 free with a time of 4:57.85 atthe 2009 CCSAs and should once again pacethe Wildcats in that distance. Sheetz is alsosecond on the Davidson Top-10 performerslist in both the 1000 free (10:21.65, 2009CCSAs) and the 1650 free (17:09.41, 2009CCSAs).

Sophomore Meagan Madden also swamonto both Top-10 performer lists in her fresh-man season (sixth in 1000 free with a time of10:34.58 and seventh in the 1650 free with atime of 17:44.41) and should improve on thatexperience in her second season.

sprint freestyleFor a third straight season, the Wildcats

are paced by Martin in the sprints. The schoolrecord-holder in the 50 (22.99), the 100 (49.67)and the 200 (1:50.15), Martin is also undefeat-

ed in the 50 and 100 freestyles at the confer-ence championships. She is also a critical cogin the Wildcat relays, swimming leadoff onthe record-holding 200 medley and 200 and400 freestyle relays and anchoring the all-timebest 400 medley relay.

Classmate Castle is second on theDavidson Top-10 performers list in bothevents, with times of 23.58 in the 50 free and51.25 in the 100 at the 2009 CCSAs.

Sophomore Casey Van Tassell is also aconsistent presence for the Wildcats in thesprint freestyles, swimming onto both Top-10performer lists as a freshman. Her time of24.09 from the 2009 CCSAs ranks her fourthin the 50 free, while her time of 51.96 in the100 free at the meet ranks her equally.

Junior Alexa Richardson, who ranks sixthon the Davidson Top-10 performers list in the50 free (24.38, 2009 CCSAs), is another swim-mer who could make an impact for Davidson.

butterflyCastle holds the school record in the 100

butterfly with a first-place time of 54.62 fromthe conference championships last season, improving on her third place finish at the2008 CCSAs.

This season, she should continue to pacethe Wildcats in the sprint butterfly, while alsoacting as a major contributor to the Wildcatrelays. She is a member of the school record-holding 200 medley and 400 medley, swim-ming the butterfly leg on both at the 2009CCSAs, where she also swam on the Wildcats’record-setting 200 and 400 freestyle relays.

Sophomore Lauren Kamperman made animmediate splash for the Wildcats, swimminga new school record in the 200 butterfly witha time of 2:06.84 at the 2009 CCSAs. She alsoswam onto the Top-10 performers list, in 10thwith a time of 59.22 from the league champi-onship.

Freshman Kelsi Hobbs could also make animpact for the Wildcats in the butterflyevents.

backstrokeThe Wildcats are without a strong pres-

ence in the backstrokes this season and willinstead rely on a bevy of competitors until a

contender emerges. Hobbs is prehaps bestpoised, as an individual champion and schoolrecord-holder in the 100 backstroke in NewHampshire.

Martin, Castle and Delgehausen all havethe versatilty to compete in the backstrokes,as does Madden and freshman JeanDeOrnellas. Martin (8th, 1:00.13) and Castle(10th, 1:00.38) both hold spots on the Top-10perfomers list in the 100 back, and Madden isseventh (2:07.76) in the 200 back.

breaststrokeSenior Caroline Curtiss is a Wildcat Top-10

performer in both the 100 (1:06.81) and 200(2:26.09) on the strength of her performancesat the 2009 CCSAs.

Junior Hailey Szymczak, placing 10th onthe Top-10 performers list with a time of1:08.41 from last season’s league champi-onships, will also factor into the breaststrokeevents for the ‘Cats, as will classmate InekeStegger, a Wildcat Top-10 performer in bothevents. Stegger ranks ninth in the 100 backwith a time of 1:08.31 from a dual meetagainst Clemson last season and fourth in the200 breast with a time of 2:25.23 from the2008 CCSAs.

23 Rhodes Scholars

Davidson is a national leader on affordability initiatives, with need-blindadmission and meeting 100 percent of demonstrated financial need with acombination of grants and student employment. In a ground-breaking initia-tive known as the Davidson Trust, Davidson was the first liberal arts collegeto eliminate the loan component in financial aid packages.

Davidson believes that its educational offerings should be affordable forevery admitted student, regardless of a family’s financial means. Thanks toDavidson’s commitment to need-blind admission, a student’s character, accomplishments and academic potential are the only factors in the decision—not ability to pay.

Affordability

Davidson counts 23 Rhodes Scholars amongst its alumni. Established by the late CecilRhodes in 1902, the prestigious scholarship provides support for study at England’sOxford University for students from around the world who are outstanding intellectually, and show qualities of moral leadership and social purpose.

Distinctly DavidsonA variety of options and opportunities set Davidson apart, including its strongHonor Code, committment to community service and Division I athletics:

w Davidson’s historic and student-administered Honor Code offers both the free-dom and responsibility of self-scheduled and unproctored exams.

w With the Dean Rusk International Studies Program, 12 Davidson-directed studyabroad programs, and off-campus study programs in 17 locations worldwide, more than 70 percent of students graduate with experience abroad.

w Davidson fields 21 NCAA Division I varsity teams, with athletes’ graduationrate at over 90 percent, just a few points higher than the rest of the student body.Davidson’s scholar athletes are well known for having the heaviest luggage of anyteam on the road—bags full of books and notes.

“Davidson cultivates an adventurous spirit,a determination to tackle life's problems, and an appreciation and understanding of those who have not had the benefitof either education or opportunity.”

Jim Murphy was introduced as DavidsonCollege’s Director of Athletics in November of1995, returning to his alma mater to lead theWildcats on the eve of their 100th anniversary ofintercollegiate athletics and into the next century.

Prior to his appointment at Davidson, Murphy,53, spent 10 years as executive associate athleticdirector and chief financial officer for the GeorgiaTech Athletic Association.

Murphy, an Atlanta native, played football andbaseball during his freshman year at Davidson. His

experience has been invaluable as he guides a program which is unique in itsdesire for excellence in both athletics and academics and has one of thesmallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools.

Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rateof 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 witha rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year.

“I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics andthink the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and after grad-uation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs intercolle-giate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.”

Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued severalmajor capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have beencompleted in Belk Arena and atSmith Field at RichardsonStadium.

The last five years have seenthe construction of the BelkArtificial Surface Field for fieldhockey, the new AlumniStadium for soccer, WilsonBaseball Park and batting cagesand the football stadium expan-sion project, which included astate-of-the-art weight room, anew press box and additionalpermanent seating.

Murphy, the 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast RegionAthletic Director of the Year, served two terms on the prestigious NCAADivision I Management Council, a policy-making body within the NCAAgovernance structure. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committeeand formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I Finance Committee. From 2002-04, Murphy chaired the Athletic Directors Association of theSouthern Conference. He was part of Charlotte’s successful bid to host theNCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championships in 1999 and 2000 and alsoserved as Tournament Director of the first and second-round games of the2005 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in Charlotte.

Murphy is a past member of the Division I Football Issues Committeeand Past-President of the Football Championship Subdivision AthleticDirectors Association. He was also a member of the NCAA Task Force onRecruiting, an 18-member panel charged with changing the culture ofrecruiting in intercollegiate athletics, and currently serves on the NCAA’sFiscal Responsibility Oversight Group.

A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidsonwith a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in manage-ment from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an audit man-ager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG Peat Marwickin Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits of public andprivate companies with up to $1 billion in assets.

Murphy has been active in the community since his return to Davidson. He is involved with Social Venture Partners - Charlotte, chairs the Board ofManagers of the Lake Norman YMCA, the Board of Directors of theCharlotte Regional Sports Commission, served three years on the Board ofthe Charlotte Council for Children and three years on the Board of Directorsof the Town of Davidson Youth Baseball League.

Murphy is married to Dr. Susan Roberts, a political science professor atDavidson, and his 24-year-old son, Matt, is a graduate of the University ofNorth Carolina and works in advertising in Chapel Hill, N.C.

Thomas W. Ross becameDavidson’s 17th president Aug. 1,2007, after three decades of leader-ship and public service in NorthCarolina.

Ross graduated from Davidsonin 1972. In the decade after, hegraduated with honors from theUniversity of North CarolinaSchool of Law, he taught at theUniversity’s School ofGovernment, joined a Greensboro

law firm and served for one year in Washington, D.C., as chief of staff of acongressional office.

In 1984, Governor Jim Hunt appointed Ross as Superior Court Judge,a position he held for 17 years.

In his work adjudicating felony cases, Ross became familiar with astate justice system that suffered shortcomings from uneven sentencingand a burgeoning prison population. In 1990, the N.C. Chief Justiceappointed him to chair a new Sentencing and Policy Advisory Committee. For two years the 23-member panel worked to create a structured sentenc-ing system that was eventually accepted by the legislature and became amodel for similar programs nationwide.

For his efforts, Ross received the William H. Rehnquist Award forJudicial Excellence from the National Center for State Courts. Chief JusticeRehnquist, now deceased, presented the award personally to Ross in theGreat Hall of the Supreme Court.

In 1999, North Carolina Chief Justice Burley Mitchell appointed Rossas director of the state’s Administrative Office of the Courts. After runningthe North Carolina Court System for nearly two years, Ross was invitedby the trustees of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation to become theFoundation’s executivedirector. His seven years atthe Foundation involvedhim in statewide issuesand policy, advocating forlegislative reform and cre-ating coalitions of nonprof-it agencies to increase theirinfluence in public affairs.

Since becoming presi-dent of Davidson Collegein 2007, Ross has overseenan ambitious strategicassessment process, initiat-ed campus-wide discus-sions of diversity andinclusivity, and announcedthe name of The DavidsonTrust, the college’s historicfinancial aid program thatreplaced loans with grantsin all financial aid pack-ages. He established 2008-09 as the Year ofSustainability, and led thecollege’s Celebration ofHonor and Integrity in2009-10.

ADMINISTRATION

On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 footballplayers traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson Collegeagainst Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in theSouth. The Plainsmen had massacred their first fouropponents, outscoring teams, 141-6.

According to one account, they were “big, quick, andundefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup.Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 poundsless.

Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, out-gaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offen-sive attack through the efforts of running back A.R.“Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, deliveringa “bewildering array of forward passes.”

Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in

the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that capturedthe awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. Theywrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whosesmall stature and ferocious style proved overwhelm-ing. One account notes that Morgan Blake of theAtlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team, “Noother team ever put together in these United States ofthe same weight as Coach Fetzer’s team could ever getthe verdict over the flock of wild men from NorthCarolina.”The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it

has been used ever since, replacing former, milder ref-erences such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and“Preachers.”
