About Alma College

Alma College is a nationally recognized private liberal arts college that highlights personalized education, social responsibility and extraordinary achievements. Devoted exclusively to the teaching and education of undergraduate students, the College is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

With an enrollment of nearly 1,440 students (41 percent men and 59 percent women), the College employs a full-time teaching faculty of 82, of which 88 percent hold a Ph.D. or other terminal degree. The student-teacher ratio is 13:1, and no classes are taught by graduate students.

Alma College was founded in 1886 by Michigan Presbyterians. While still maintaining a close relationship with the Presbyterian Church (USA), the College offers an environment that welcomes students of all religious backgrounds.

The College’s attractive campus is located in the city of Alma (population approximately 9,000), located 45 minutes north of Lansing and 45 minutes due west of Saginaw in the mid-point of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. The school is also the closest league institution to the Upper Peninsula of the state.

More than one third of Alma students participate in intercollegiate athletics. The College offers nine men’s and nine women’s varsity athletic programs.

Chris Hamstra was hired as the Alma College Head Coach of Swimming & Diving after a nationwide search in the summer of 2007.

Coach Hamstra graduated from Hope College in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. During his time at Hope, Hamstra was a four-year student-athlete, received All-MIAA honors and was also named to the All-American team. Hamstra was also a member of MIAA Championship teams and brings that winning attitude and work ethic to Alma.

During his tenure at Alma, Hamstra’s athletes have broken 26 school records. He has been the coach of more than 80 All-Time Top 10 performers as well as several All-MIAA performers. These accomplishments are accompanied by Hamstra’s multiple All-American performers, the most recent being divers Spencer Johnson ’10 and Hanna Leestma ’10, as well as numerous Team Academic All-Americans.
