Take one glance at the Cleveland State record book and it’s easy to sum up Wally Morton’s 35-year career in a single word – successful. And with long-time success comes an elevated set of challenges and expectations. For the first 27 years of his career with the Vikings, Morton served as the head coach of the men’s swim-ming and diving team. In 2007-08, he added the women’s program to his resume as well as the new title of Director of Competitive Aquatics. The 2009-10 season will be his 29th with the men’s program and his third with the women’s team. Prior to being named the team’s head coach in 1981, he served eight years as an assistant coach with the Vikings. During his tenure with the Viking men, Mor-ton’s success is backed up by a 251-138-1 (.645) dual meet record that includes nine Penn-Ohio Championships, a pair of MCC titles, a Horizon League Championship and an impressive 25 sea-sons with a .500 or better record. In his career, Morton has qualified five athletes for the NCAA Championships, including three-straight appear-ances by 2009 All-American Jakub Dobies. In his second season at the helm of the women’s pro-gram, his squad improved its dual meet record and recorded the most dual wins since 2005-06 with swimmers earning podium finishes in three different events at the Horizon League Champi-

onships. The women’s program has a bright future, giv-en what Morton has accomplished with the men. His Viking men’s squads have recorded at least 10 wins in eight straight seasons, compiling an 86-29 record during that span. In 1996-97, CSU also tied the school record for victories in a sea-son with a 14-4 mark, originally set in 1946-47. The 2005-06 Horizon League Coach of the Year, Morton directed the Viking men to back-to-back Midwestern Collegiate Conference titles in 1998 and 1999 and was named the MCC Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1999. He was named the Coach of the Year of the Penn-Ohio Conference six times, including three straight seasons from 1984-86. But there are other numbers that back up Mor-ton’s success on the pool deck. During his career he has led countless swimmers to the United States Senior Swimming Nationals and five to the NCAA Championships. His success has also translated internationally with Nedim Nisic com-peting in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Two more of his CSU swimmers have gone on to be Olympic Trials finalists and the Vikings got their first All-American in school history in Dobies in 2009. Morton joined the CSU staff in 1974 as the Aquatic Director of the brand-new CSU Natato-rium while also serving as an assistant coach with the swim team. He was named the head coach of the CSU program in 1981, following the retirement of coaching legend Bob Busbey, and has brought regional and national prominence to Cleveland State. His responsibilities have not been limited to coaching. Morton has been extensively involved in event management for 38 national and in-ternational aquatic events as the University’s Acquatics Director and has overseen four NCAA Division I Championships and many regional and international competitions hosted by Cleveland State. Thanks to his vast experience in coaching and hosting championship swimming events, Morton has become a well-known face in the swimming world allowing for international recruiting. In his tenure, he has successfully recruited athletes from Australia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Canada, England, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Panama, Poland, Portugal, Rus-sia, Serbia & Montenegro, South Africa, Spain and Sweden to CSU. A 1970 Miami (Ohio) graduate, Morton was a member of back-to-back Mid-American Con-ference championship swim teams in 1966 and 1967. The winningest coach in Cleveland State swimming history, Morton credits his successful coaching career to his two great influences - Tom
Patton of the Dover, Ohio YMCA and former USA Olympic coach Busbey, who Morton had the privi-lege to serve under for his first eight years with the Vikings. In addition to his duties with the swim teams, Morton is also a faculty member in CSU’s Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance De-partment. Morton and his wife, Carol, a professor at Baldwin-Wallace, have one son, Robert. They re-side in Strongsville, Ohio.

It is evident that Rich Karban, CSU Head Diving Coach, is not only viewed as one of the top coaches in the history of Cleveland State, but also the Horizon League. Karban has grasped the Horizon League Diving Coach of the Year honors in five of the last six seasons. Since Karban took over as diving coach in 2003, the Vikings have swept the league Diver of the Meet honors in five of the last six seasons. Dan Baiko took the top honor in both the one- and three-meter events in 2008; Chris Dalman won both the one- and three-meter titles in 2007 and the one-meter in 2006; Thatcher Carr won the three-meter in 2006, as well as both the one- and three-meter titles in 2005 and Chris Jones claimed the one-meter title and finished second in the three-meter in 2004. Karban also coached Dalman to an 18th place finish in the one-meter diving event and 20th place finish in the three-meter diving event at the 2007 NCAA Championships. After an accomplished diving career at Cleveland State in the early 1980’s, Karban was inducted into the CSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000. He was just the sec-ond diver and the fourth member of the swimming and
diving team to be voted into the hall of fame. Karban became the first CSU diver and only the second swimming and diving team member to win an Eastern Intercollegiate Championship, claiming the three-meter title in 1984. He helped the Vikings to the team title at the Penn-Ohio Championships during each of the four seasons, with his career culminating in 1984 after being named the team’s most outstanding athlete and qualify-ing for zones. Karban started his coaching career as CSU’s assistant diving coach from 1984-86. He became the Vikings’ head diving coach during the 1986-87 season before leaving to work with Olympic diving coach Ron O’Brien. Karban went on to coach diving at Eastern Michigan from 1989-94, earning the Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year honor in 1992. He also coached his U.S. Diving Junior Olympic Club to a fifth-place finish at the national championships in 1990, while coaching seven finalists and a national champion. Karban and his wife, Betsy, were married in 1988.
Andrew Hancock, a former CSU swimmer, is in his third season as an assistant coach for the men’s and women’s programs. He rejoined his alma mater in 2007-08 after three years in Chicago, where he was the Head Age Group Coach at NASA/Wildcat Aquatics out of Northwestern University. This season, Hancock will again assist in enhancing the performances and abilities of the Viking swimmers, while serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator for the third season. Hancock enjoyed a highly successful career for the Vi-kings from 2000-03. The Horizon League Swimmer of the Year in 2002, he won six individual titles, including the 1,650 freestyle in each of his final three seasons. He won four consecutive conference titles as a member of the Vikings’ 800 freestyle relay team, setting a then-conference record in the event in 2003. Hancock was also the former school-record holder in the 400 IM, becoming the first Viking in school history to break the four-minute
barrier in the event. As an age group swimmer in Austra-lia, Hancock competed against some of the best swim-mers in the sport’s history, such as Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett. Hancock began his coaching career at CSU, volunteer-ing as an assistant for the men and women during the 2003-04 season. At Northwestern, Hancock’s age group swimmers achieved 13 top-25 National Rankings over a two-year span, including two first place and seven top-five rank-ings. While at Northwestern, Hancock gained valuable in-sight into one of the top collegiate programs in the coun-try and worked with some of the best swimmers in the world. In 2004, Hancock graduated from Cleveland State with a Bachelor’s degree in Finance. He married former Viking swimmer, Rebecca Guerra, in 2005 and the couple re-sides in Cleveland, Ohio.

April Woo joins the CSU men’s and women’s coaching staff after completing her swimming career at the Uni-versity of the Pacific in 2009. Woo will assist with the day-to-day aspects of the CSU program this season, as well as focusing on the dryland and weight training portions of the sport. She brings great enthusiasm for dryland and weight training and hopes to transfer that passion to the Cleveland State swimmers. Along with her background in Division I swimming, Woo has ample coaching experience that she will bring to the program. For the past four years she has been an instruc-tor at Tiger Aquatics in Stockton, California, where she planned and conducted swimming workouts for all ages and abilities. She also taught biomechanics and water safety procedures at the Pacific Swim School in Stockton,
California and Iolani Swim School in Honolulu, Hawaii. While at Pacific, Woo swam sprints in all four strokes for the Tigers. Her swimming career was capped off dur-ing her junior season, when she set personal bests in all of her strokes, including the 100 back, 50 and 100 free, 100 fly and 100 breast. She finished with an eighth place ranking in the Pacific record books in the 100 breast-stroke. In 2008 she was part of the top-10 all-time 400 freestyle relay. Woo graduated from the University of the Pacific with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.APril

Carys Behn, five-time individual school record holder, will use her sohpo-more season to improve on her record times in the 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 freestyle events.
Freshman Alice Sommerville is expected to be one of the top newcom-ers in the Horizon League this saeson.
2009-10 women’s seAson PreViewA year after finishing with an 8-9 record and
a sixth place Horizon League finish, the Cleveland State women’s swimming and diving team has high expectations for the upcoming year. Third year head coach Wally Morton has seen what this program has been able to accomplish and believes this is the year to improve in the Horizon League.
“I have been very impressed with what I have seen so far in the early workouts,” Morton said. “I think with hard work and dedication this year’s team can be among the best, if not the best team in school history.”
With only one senior returning this season, the Vikings will rely heavily on underclassmen and seven incoming freshmen, which compile one of the best recruiting classes in CSU history.
“We have an outstanding recruiting class this year including three local swimmers,” Morton said. “This will allow us to improve on our dual meet record as well as move up in the conference standings.”
The 2009-10 roster is compiled of one senior, three juniors, seven sophomores and seven fresh-men.
FreestyleFive-time individual school record holder,
Carys Behn, returns for her sophomore year to lead the freestyle events. Behn holds the CSU record in the 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 free, and based on her previous experience, she will provide the foundation for the success of this season’s team.
Alice Sommerville joins the squad from New Zealand, where she was an outstanding swim-mer at Mount Hutt College. Sommerville recorded first place finishes in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly events at the 2009 New Zealand Age Group Championships. Morton expects her to be one of the best swimmers in the conference in freestyle and butterfly events, and one of the strongest swimmers in the CSU program.
All freestyle events will receive an immediate impact from incoming freshman Joanna Olsson. Olsson has national and international swimming experience and will be in contention to win the
200, 500, 1,000 and 1,650 free events.
Junior Diana Mruk will offer ter-rific leadership and depth for the freestyle mid-distance events as she returns from an outstanding 2008-09 season in which she set career best times in the 50 and 200 free.
Whitney Hickey and Emily Splain return after their freshmen cam-paigns with added experience in the sprint and mid-distance events. Hickey recorded a victory in the 100 free last season against St. Francis, and was part of the 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams that set school records at the league championships. Splain made a run at the league meet last year, ending with a top-16 finish in the 200 free.
Adding to the freestyle roster will be freshman Jamie Puls, who was one of the top swimmers at Normandy High where she set school records in the 50, 100 and 200 free events.
The freestyle distance events will be led by juniors Erin Green and Frances Carrion, who were both active swimmers at the league chamipion-ships last season. Green swam the eighth fastest time in CSU history in the 1,000 free at the meet, while Carrion made top-20 finishes in the mile and 1,000.
Green and Carrion will be joined by incoming freshman Courtney Maddock, who will add strength to the distance events right from the start of the 2009-10 season.
ButterflyHickey returns with hopes of bettering the
school record she set last year in the 100 but-terfly during her seventh place Horizon League finish. She will be a large part of the butterfly roster as she also had a top eight finish in the 200 at the conference meet last year.
Behn will continue to contribute in the but-terfly events as well this year, after swimming the fifth-fastest time in CSU history in the 100 during regular season competition last year.
The versatility of Olsson and Sommerville will be noticable in the butterfly events, as they will both be added factors in meets this season.
BreaststrokeThe deepest stroke for the Vikings
will be the breaststroke, which will be led by Green and sophomore Rachel Arzadon, who both earned spots in the all-time CSU top-10 last year. Green swam the second-fastest time in school history in the 100 breast dur-ing league preliminaries, while
Arzadon recorded top-10 times in the 100 and 200.
Senior Brittany McCann is also capable of recording top-10 times based on her previous swimming results. Last season she set personal bests in the 50, 100 and 200 events.
During preseason training, newcomers Michelle Ferro, Emily Simard, Kelly Rath and Allison Pallija have all shown the potential to be able to score in breaststroke events this year.
BackstrokeTogether, Hickey and Splain will provide the
leadership for the backstroke events, as they continue to improve on exceptional freshmen campaigns when they both recorded all-time top-10 times. Hickey had an eighth place finish in the 100 at the league meet recording the top time on the team, and Splain had top-10 times in the 100 and 200 during the meet.
Ferro comes to the program with times that suggest she could be one of the best backstro-kers in the conference, and will fill a large role for the Vikings this season.
Individual MedleyBehn is currently ranked eighth on the CSU
all-time list in the 200 IM, and is the lone returner in the event. She will depend on incom-ing freshmen, Olsson, Sommerville, Ferro, Rath, Simard and Pallija to add depth to the IM roster.
DivingSophomore Liz Victor returns after putting up
her best scores of the season at the Horizon League Championship, finishing 12th and 13th in the 3- and 1-meter dives respectively.
Victor’s classmate Kacey Cummings returns after a freshman season where she was a top recruit in the program. The expectations for Cummings are the same as they were last sea-son, which is to be a contributor at the league championships.

2009-10 men’s seAson PreViewIt may be a different year, but the goal for the
CSU men’s swimming and diving team has stayed the same: to win the Horizon League Championship.
Under head coach Wally Morton, who is enter-ing his 36th season with the Vikings and 29th as head coach, the squad is set to make another run at the title.
“Our team and our athletes have the potential to reach our goals this season,” Morton said. “Not only do they have the potential, but many have reached these goals in the past.”
To reach these goals, the Vikings will turn to 2009 All-American Jakub Dobies, who returns for his senior season, following his third straight trip to the NCAA championships. Dobies became the first All-American in CSU and Horizon League swimming history after a year in which he placed 13th in the 100 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships.
“We are putting a lot of emphasis on team and team balance with this year’s group,” said Morton. “We have quality swimmers returning, led by three seniors who are going to provide tremendous leadership for us.”
The three seniors will be joined by three juniors, seven sophomores and eight freshmen for the 2009-10 season. The returners own eight Horizon League titles from 2008-09 and three conference accolades including: swimmer of the meet, athlete of the year and newcomer of the year all held by sophomore Mark deSwardt.
FreestyleIndividual school record holder Stephen Grove
returns as one of the team’s top freestyle sprint-ers. Grove set a school and Horizon League record in the 50 free during the preliminaries of the conference meet where he went on to finish third.
All-American and individual school record holder Jakub Dobies returns to join Grove in free-style events. Setting a school record in the 100 free, Dobies earned a third place finish during the league championships. Grove and Dobies will be joined by junior Mike Marsico who is one of the fastest sprinters on the roster, showcasing his talents at the league meet while swimming the third-fastest 50 free time in school history.
Freshmen Justin Hill and Berry Thompson, fierce competitors in high school, will join forces and work together to add depth to the sprint events this season.
The freestyle mid-distance and distance are two events that CSU will have plenty of depth in this year, as four swimmers return along with five newcomers. Sophomore Horizon League Swimmer of the Year Mark deSwardt returns after winning all three of his individual events at the Horizon League Championships last year (500, 1,000 and 1,650). deSwardt is currently the top miler in the
history of the program, smashing the previous record by more than 17 seconds.
Sophomore Pieter Ritz will contribute to the mid-distance and distance events, as he sets out to improve on the times he recorded last season. In his freshman season, Ritz proved himself to be one of the top swimmers in the conference.
Newcomers Pierre De Waal, Graham Thoresen, Alex Cohara, Tony Pavlosky and James Hrivnak all have the strength to be standouts in the league, rounding off a strong freestyle roster.
ButterflyGrove will step up to lead the sprint butterfly
events this year, as the team will miss Olympian Nedim Nisic’s contribution in the butterfly stroke. Grove, the school record holder in the 100, battled classmate Todd Winchell all season long as they traded school records. Winchell posted his fast-est time during the preliminaries of the Horizon League Championships before finishing fourth overall.
Sophomores Travis Lombardozzi, Keith Everhart and Colin Hanner have another year of experience in the fly events and will be able to help the team throughout meets this season.
Thompson will contribute to fly events during his freshman season along with his freestyle races.
The 200 fly lineup has been retooled for the upcoming season, and will be anchored by junior Zvonimir Androic who is one of the top butterfli-ers on the team. Joining him will be De Waal who comes to the Vikings with an NCAA “B” cut time in the 200. With the strength of the roster, the goal is set to reach the national stage yet again this season.
Freshman Brad Bielak will add quality to the 200 fly roster after a succesful high school cam-paign, where he was a finalist at the YMCA Nationals.
BreaststrokeOnce again Dobies is the notable breaststro-
ker for Cleveland State. He has represented CSU for three straight years at the NCAA Championships and garnered All-American status last season after placing 13th in the 100.
Reigning 200 breaststroke league champion junior Deni Gasparin will team up with Dobies in breaststroke events. Gasparin is one of the top sprint breaststrokers in the nation, ending last season ranked 65th in the 200.
BackstrokeWinchell, Androic and Hanner are three of the
best backstrokers in the conference and are returning to once again lead the team. Winchell and Androic are ranked in the top-10 all-time records in the 100, while Hanner finished third in the 200 and ninth in the 100 during the league meet last year.
Both Thoresen and Hill will be counted on to add power to the backstroke events this year after showing promising talent during the early season workouts.
Individual MedleyDobies and Gasparin are both 200 IM league
finalists and point scorers in past years, and will continue to excel in the event based on preseason workouts.
In the 400 IM, the Vikings will rely on deSwardt, who will be working to improve on his second place all-time CSU record finish he set during the regular season last year.
Thoresen, Cohara and De Waal will be tough competitors during the early meets of the season to help the team when the league championships come around in February.
DivingSophomore Matt DiMasso returns after a tre-
mendous freshman season where he was a major contributor in both the 1- and 3- meter spring-board diving. DiMasso was able to score in both events at the conference championships.
Sophomore transfer, Josh Gonzalez, comes to CSU from East Carolina University and is expect-ed to be one of the top divers in the conference this year. He will excel in both the 1- and 3-meter events along with DiMasso. The combination of the two divers will be a key component to the team’s success.
Travis Lombardozzi returns for his sophomore season after recording top-five team times in three events last year.

Women Record One Of Program’s Best Seasons The 2008-09 season was Wally Morton’s second as the head coach of the women’s program. Morton’s goals for the team were to improve school record times and make a jump in the Horizon League Championship standings. What he got out of his team was an effort and enthusiasm that met the challenge and ultimately produced one of the best seasons in school history. The women’s improvement is easily noted in their win total of 8-9 (3-4 HL), where they doubled their record of 4-10 (0-5 HL) from 2008 and made significant strides in every meet. On the year, 10 school records were set, nine of which came during the four-day Horizon League Championship meet. In addition, the women tallied 22 all-time top-10 times, all but three of which came during the league championship. The year’s success also bodes well for the future of the program, as the holders of all six 2009 school records return as do 14 of the new all-time Top-10 times set in 2008-09. The season started on Oct. 18 with a 106-99 loss to St. Francis at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium. The women won six events, including three by Carys Behn. Two of Behn’s times (200 free, 100 fly) were two of the top-10 times in school history and her performances earned her Horizon League Swimmer of the Week honors on Oct. 23. The Vikings then traveled to Green Bay on Oct. 25, and despite falling, 158-72, CSU picked up two wins and another all-time top-10 finish. Behn won both events for the Vikings, swimming the seventh-fastest time in school history in the 100 free as the leadoff of the 400 freestyle relay. On Oct. 31 in Cleveland, the team evened its record at 2-2 with wins over Butler (159-58) and Canisius (140-93) and recorded seven individual wins including Brittany Tweardy (50 free), Behn (500 free, 1,000 free, 200 IM), Emily Splain (200 free), Katie Bellew (100 fly), Kristina Nagy (100 free) and Kacey Cummings in the 1-meter dive. A day later in New York, the Vikings fell to St. Bonaventure, 146-82, as Splain swam a lifetime best to finish runner-up in the 200 back. The Vikings also won the 400 free relay. CSU returned to league action on Nov. 7 in Youngstown for a dual against Youngstown State and Niagara. CSU knocked off Niagara, 149-92, and fell, 140-93, to YSU. Cummings won both div-ing events and the 400 free relay of Behn, Splain, Bunker and Maria Culjak also won. Behn, who fin-ished second in the 500 free, set a school record in the event (5:04.53). Up next, the Vikings hosted the City College Championships, sweeping Gannon (141-91), John Carroll (182.5-38.5) and Notre Dame College (178-54) and improving to 6-4. Kacey Cummings won

both diving events for the second straight meet and the Vikings rolled from there with wins by Splain (200 free), Behn (50 free, 100 fly), Rachel Arzadon (100 breast with a top-10 time) and both the 200 free and 200 medley relays. On Nov. 25, Behn added her second school record during the Vikings’ 178-81 loss to Ohio State in Busbey Natatorium. She won both events for CSU, including a school record swim in the 200 free (1:52.52) and also swam the sixth-fastest time in school history to win the 50 free. The Vikings rounded out the fall semester at the three-day Akron University Zippy Invitational from Dec. 5-7, finishing 11th with 231 points. Behn fin-ished second in the 200 free, just off her school record pace, won the consolation heat of the 500 free and improved her all-time top-10 time in the 100 free. Splain swam the ninth-fastest time in school history in the 200 free and the 200 free relay of Behn, Splain, Kristine Bunker and Whitney Hickey swam the second-fastest time in school history to finish 10th. To start the new year, CSU traveled to Tampa, Fla. for the University of Tampa Relays on Jan. 3. After nearly a month break, the Vikings finished third in the non-traditional meet format with 92 points as Hickey, Culjak and Sandra Bunker paired up to win the 300 back relay. The women returned from their week of training in Florida to host Xavier on Jan. 10. Behn picked up three individual wins (200 free, 100 fly, 500 free) for the Vikings, but it wasn’t enough as the Vikings fell, 132-73, and moved their dual record to 6-6. CSU had a strong showing against Oakland on Jan. 16 in Cleveland as a total team effort included six individual event wins, one school record and four all-time top-10 times. Despite the success, the team lost the dual, 172-120. Behn notched her third school record of the year in the 1,000 free (10:23.19), while Culjak swam the seventh-fastest time in CSU history in both the 100 and 200 back and Arzadon swam the ninth-fastest 100 breast.
The Vikings celebrated Senior Day on Jan. 24 when they split a double dual with Wright State and Youngstown State. The women won three events, recorded 15 team or personal best marks of the season and set a school record on a day that included a 124-108 win over YSU and a 146-88 loss to WSU. Behn broke her own school record in the 500 free (5:04.29) and swam the fifth-fastest time in school history in the 100 free as the leadoff of the 400 free relay. CSU won its second straight Horizon League dual on Feb. 6, taking a 128-89 victory at Valparaiso and evened its record at 8-8. The Vikings won each of the first three individual events, including Frances Carrion’s impressive win in the mile. The day’s other multiple-event winners were Culjak (200 free, 100 back) and Behn (50 free, 100 fly, 500 free). In div-ing, the duo of Heather Dietz and Liz Victor finished first and second in the 1-meter event. On Feb. 7, the Vikings turned around and headed to Chicago for the final dual of the season. CSU came out on the short end of a 152-81 loss but won three events. Behn won both the 500 and 1,000 free for the Vikings and the 400 free relay of Behn, Splain, Kristine Bunker and Tweardy also picked up a win. The CSU women finished the season by travel-ing to Brown Deer, Wis. Feb. 25-28 for the 2009 Horizon League Championships. The women met the challenge of moving up in the rankings after an exceptional effort, finishing sixth with 290 points, their highest total since 2006. In the four-day event the squad finished with nine school records, including four of the five relays. Behn finished as the meet’s eighth-highest scorer (50 points) with three school-record podium finishes and was a member of three of CSU’s record-setting relays. She finished runner-up in both the 100 free (51.26) and 200 free (1:50.22) while taking third in the 500 free (4:55.35), while also setting a 50 free record (23.66) as the 200 free relay leadoff. Hickey also set a school record with her seventh-place finish in the 100 fly (57.03) and was instru-mental in the Vikings’ success with top-8 finishes in all three of her events. Culjak added significant contributions with a top-8 finish in the 200 back while Dietz recorded an eighth place finish in the 1-meter dive event. Four school-record relay marks were set as well, including the 200 free relay (1:35.34) of Behn, Culjak, Hickey and Kristine Bunker; the 400 free relay (3:32.48) of Hickey, Behn, Kristine Bunker and Nagy; the 200 medley relay (1:47.86) of Culjak, Arzadon, Splain and Hickey; and the 400 medley relay (3:56.14) of Culjak, Arzadon, Bellew and Behn.

Men Pick Up Eight League Titles In 2008-09 The 2008-09 Vikings extended the team’s streak of winning at least 10 dual meets for the eighth straight year (10-5) and qualifying an athlete for the NCAA Division I Championships for a third-straight season. There were plenty of highlights for the team, which won eight conference championship events and earned five NCAA “B” cuts in 2009. Ten school records were set, all of which came during the four-day league meet. In addition, the men tallied 19 all-time top-10 times, all but four of which came during league championship competition. Morton will have a lot of talent returning as well, with 10 different swimmers who set top-10 times returning in 2009-10. CSU traveled to Green Bay for the first dual meet of the 2008-09 season on Oct. 25, winning all but one event for the 145.5 - 95.5 victory. Mark deSwardt won three events for the Vikings, includ-ing the fourth-fastest 1,000 free in school history, the 100 fly and the 500 free and earned Horizon League Swimmer of the Week honors. The Vikings hosted Canisius in the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium on Oct. 31 and swept the nine individual events en route to a 143-73 victory. deSwardt again won three events, swimming the 1,000 free in the seventh-fastest time in CSU his-tory and also winning the 200 and 500 free. A day later CSU traveled to St. Bonaventure, dropping a 141-100 decision on Nov. 1. Zvonimir Androic, Marko Milenkovic, Todd Winchell and Jakub Dobies got things started with a win in the 400 medley relay followed by deSwardt’s win in the 1,000 and Winchell’s victory in the 200 free. Androic (200 back) and Milenkovic (200 breast) were also win-ners. CSU showed its depth in a 146-91 win over Niagara on Nov. 7 at the Youngstown State campus, winning all but four events on the night. Horizon
League Scholar Athlete of the Month Stephen Grove recorded individual wins in the 50 free and 200 fly. Not much stood in the way of the Vikings on Nov. 11 at the City College Championships. The Vikings won all but one event and picked up three dual wins, improving to 6-1. The hosts earned victories over Gannon (140-86), John Carroll (149-72) and Notre Dame College (149-41). In the diving events, Matt DiMasso won both the 1- and 3-meter competitions. In the swimming events, deSwardt continued to dominate the 1,000 free, swimming the third-best time in CSU history and also won the 200 IM. Dobies also won two events for the Vikings, the 200 free and the 100 breast. Olympian Nedim Nisic added two wins as well, the 50 and 100 free events. The Vikings hosted a double dual meet on Nov. 15, knocking off Miami (OH) 135-102 and falling to Notre Dame, 132-109. The hosts won six events, including three by deSwardt, and recorded season-best times in nine events. Two of the season bests were by deSwardt, who swam the eighth-fastest time in school history in the 500 free and the ninth-fastest time in the 200 fly. He also won the 1,000 free and earned his second Horizon League Swimmer of the Week honor. Ohio State, ranked No. 11 at the time, was the toughest team on the men’s schedule, but the Vikings fought for two wins and placed second in seven other events despite falling, 169-86, on Nov. 25. CSU received several notable performances, but the highlight again was deSwardt. The freshman continued his assault on the CSU record books with
wins in the 1,000 freestyle and 200 IM. In the 1,000 free, he recorded a decisive 11-second victory to improve on his third-fastest time in school history and also won the 200 IM. In his 500 free race, deSwardt took second, but did it in the seventh-fastest time in CSU history. From Dec. 5-7, the men split their squads and headed to the Ohio State and Akron Zippy Invitationals. At Ohio State, the Vikings took fifth with 194 points. On day one the Vikings had break-out swims in the 50 free with Dobies (10th, second-fastest time in school history), Grove (17th) and Marsico (21st) all making the finals, while three-time Horizon League Swimmer of the Week deSwardt improved his 500 free time to the third-fastest in CSU history. The Vikings also earned a top-10 finish in the 200 free relay of Dobies, Grove, Nisic and Marsico, which swam the second-fastest time in school history and placed fifth. The highlight of day two came when Winchell set a school record in the 100 fly (48.80) and fin-ished fifth. Other notable performances included Dobies’ ninth-place finish in the 100 fly, Milenkovic swimming the eighth-fastest 100 breast time in CSU history to place 10th and Gasparin finishing 13th. deSwardt swam the third-fastest time in school history for 15th-place in the 400 IM. The group wrapped up the event with a solid day three effort. In the first mile swim of his college career, deSwardt finished sixth and swam the sec-ond-fastest time in school history to earn an NCAA “B” cut time. The Vikings finished 10th with 255 points at the Zippy Invitational. CSU’s top day one finish came during the 500 free event when Pieter Ritz dropped 18 seconds off his season best time to finish fifth. Keith Everhart also dropped time, winning the con-solation heat of the 50 free. On day two CSU recorded seven top-25 finishes, highlighted by Colin Hanner’s top-10 finishes in the

Keith Everhart was part of the 200 freestyle relay team that won the Horizon League title in 2008-09. The relay also set a new CSU and Horizon League record.
Sophomore Mark deSwardt was the Horizon League Champion in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle events last season.

earned 15 podium finishes that included eight wins, three runner-up times and four third-place finish-es. CSU records included Dobies in the 100 free (44.53) and 100 breast (52.94); deSwardt in the 1,000 free (9:01.46) and 1,650 free (15:02.06); and Grove in the 50 free (20.09) and 100 fly (48.60). Four relay teams also set records including the 200 free relay (1:19.50) of Dobies, Grove, Everhart and Marsico; the 400 free relay (3:00.45) of Dobies, Grove, Nisic and Marsico; the 200 medley relay (1:27.58) of Winchell, Dobies, Grove and Marisco; and the 400 medley relay (3:16.72) of Winchell, Dobies, Grove and Marsico.
Four swimmers represented CSU at the Ohio State Last Ditch Qualifier on March 8. Dobies, Winchell, Grove and deSwardt all went hoping to earn invitations to the NCAA Division I Swimming Championships. Though no one swam automatic qualifying times, Dobies finished second in the 100 breast and fourth in the 50 free, deSwardt finished second in the mile with an NCAA “B” cut time and was also second in the 200 fly, while Winchell was fourth in the 100 fly. The 2008-09 season ended with celebration as
Dobies became the first All-American in CSU swimming his-tory. Dobies made his third appearance at the NCAA Championships on March 27 in College Station, Texas, finishing off the 100 breast with a 13th place finish and the first All-America honor for both a Viking and Horizon League swimmer. He swam a 53.13 in the consolation final to finish in the nation’s top-16, earning All-America status for the first time in his career, and solidifying his spot among the nation’s best breaststrokers.
100 back (6th) and 100 fly (8th). DiMasso also picked up a sixth-place finish in the 1-meter dive while Volkmar Baur finished 12th in the 400 IM. On the final day, CSU recorded five season best times including Ritz (1,650 free), Hanner (200 back), Derek Butts (200 back), Baur (200 fly) and Travis Lombardozzi (200 fly). With nearly a month break, the Vikings returned to the water on Jan. 3 at the Tampa Relays, finishing third with 84 points. In the non-traditional meet format, CSU picked up a win in the 300 back relay behind the efforts of Winchell, Hanner and Androic. The Vikings opened the second half of the sea-son at home on Jan. 10, hosting Xavier. CSU swept the meet with victories in all 11 events for a 139-62 win and improved to 8-3 on the season. Both Winchell and deSwardt won two events apiece. Winchell, who went on to earn Horizon League Swimmer of the Week honors, held off deSwardt to win the 200 free and also won the 100 fly. deSwardt won both the 500 and 1,000 free. The Vikings hosted some tough competition in Oakland on Jan. 16. CSU claimed seven event wins, including four straight late in the meet, but still fell, 173.5-118.5. Five different athletes recorded a win for the Vikings, including two each by deSwardt (1,000 free, 500 free) and Milenkovic (200 breast, 200 IM). CSU hosted Wright State in the final home meet of the season on Jan. 24. The team finished with eight wins, 19 team or personal best times of the season, one school record and one Horizon League record in a 133-108 win while improving to 9-4 in dual meets. deSwardt won the 1,000 free in record fashion (9:05.64), winning the event and improving the school record by 11 seconds, and setting the Horizon League record. He also won the 200 fly in the fourth-fastest time in school history, and the 500 free while earn-ing his fourth Horizon League Swimmer of the Week
honor. Another notable performance was Milenkovic’s win in the 200 breast, which came in the seventh-fastest time in CSU history. CSU traveled to Valparaiso for a Horizon League dual meet on Feb. 6 and picked up its 10th dual win of the season (111-89). The men won all but one event including wins by seven different athletes. deSwardt won three events (400 IM, 500 free, 1,650 free) and his mile time was the second-fastest time in school history. Other winners were Mike Marsico (200 free), Grove (50 free, 100 back), Milenkovic (100 fly), Dobies (100 breast) and DiMasso (1-meter dive). The final meet of the regular season came on Feb. 7 at UIC where the Vikings fell, 132-102. deSwardt and Dobies both had solid days with deSwardt winning three times with a new UIC pool record and Dobies recording two victories. deSwardt earned his fifth Horizon League Swimmer of the Week honor after setting a pool record with his win in the 1,000 free. He also won the 200 fly in the fourth-fastest time in school history and touched first in the 500 free. Dobies won the 200 IM and 100 free. The men put the finishing touches on an out-standing season with a solid four days at the Horizon League Championships in Brown Deer, Wis. (Feb. 25-28). deSwardt was the league’s unanimous pick to receive all three conference post-season honors - Swimmer of the Championship Meet, Athlete of the Year and Newcomer of the Year - becoming the first Horizon League athlete to earn all three honors in the same season. On top of six Horizon League Championship records and five league records, the Vikings finished with three of the meet’s top-10 scorers led by deSwardt (1st with 60 points), Dobies (4th with 52 points) and Deni Gasparin (tied 10th with 46 points). CSU swimmers set 10 school records during the meet and also recorded five NCAA “B” cut per-formances. During the four-day event, the Vikings
Junior Deni Gasparin won the 200 breaststroke at the Horizon League Championships, and has also recorded three individual top-ten times and two top-five relay times during his CSU career.
Todd Winchell was part of the 200 medley relay that won the Horizon League title. The relay also set a new CSU and Horizon League record.
Mike Marsico was part of the 200 freestyle relay that won the Horizon League title in 2008-09.

Entering its 31st season of operation in the 2009-10 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics confer-ences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models.
The Horizon League membership features 10 public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputa-tions and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University.
The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth.
The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports – nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball).
The League receives automatic bids to NCAA champion-ships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s ten-nis, women’s volleyball, and for the first time in League history,
women’s golf. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the
“Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office.
A PROUD HISTORYFounded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City
Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University.
Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joining in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007.
On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions.
ATHLETIC SUCCESSIn the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed
unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by three Sweet Sixteen appearances (Butler 2003, 2007; Milwaukee 2005) and nine wins in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in the past seven seasons.
In other sports, League teams have won at least one game in their respective NCAA Championships each of the last seven seasons in men’s soccer (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tourna-ment four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last five seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06).
Green Bay’s women’s basketball team added to that résumé with a victory in the 2007 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship. Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
ACADEMIC SUCCESSHorizon League student-athletes also excel in the class-
room as more than 500 have been named to the Academic Honor Roll each of the past seven semesters for carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, including more than 600 for the last four semesters. Twenty-five student-athletes were named to ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District teams in 2008-09, while eight earned Academic All-America honors.
COMMUNITY SERVICEIn addition to its athletics success, the Horizon League
has secured a well-earned reputation for its community service initiatives. Each January, member institutions partner with local elementary schools for an art, music and essay contest highlighting the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with winners recognized at League games on the weekend of MLK Day.
The Horizon League Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also has continued a tradition of working with youth in Indianapolis during its annual summer meeting. On campus, student-athletes have raised money and awareness for such causes as breast cancer, diabetes and hurricane relief, while hosting blood drives, neighborhood clean-ups, Big Brother/Big Sister programs and more.
SPORTSMANSHIPOne of the Horizon League’s points of emphasis is foster-
ing collegial environments for competition among student-athletes, coaches, administrators and fans in a pro-active approach. Among the vehicles is the Ethical Conduct Pledge, which is signed each season by student-athletes, coaches, officials, campus and League administrators.
DEMOGRAPHICSHorizon League institutions boast a combined enrollment
of more than 130,000 plus nearly a quarter-million living alumni centered in the League’s Midwest footprint. League media markets include five of the nation’s top 35 in Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Indianapolis and Milwaukee, covering more than 10 million television households and encompassing more than nine percent of the nation’s television audience.
GOVERNANCEThe Horizon League is governed by a Board of Directors
comprised of the ten member institutions’ chief executive officers. Dr. David Sweet, President of Youngstown State, serves as Board Chair through June 30, 2010. Ron Strollo, Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Youngstown State, serves as chair of the Executive Council, and Christine Moeller, Assistant Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator at Cleveland State, is the Vice Chair and Sheila Patterson of Cleveland State serves as chair of the Faculty Athletics Representatives.
LEADERSHIPJonathan B. (Jon) LeCrone is in his 18th year as
Commissioner of the Horizon League, having been named to the position on May 11, 1992, and is the fifth-longest tenured commissioner among the 31 Division I conferences. He is the fifth commissioner in League history, succeeding Daniel B. “Tucker” DiEdwardo (1989-92), James W. Shaffer (1984-89), Cecil N. Coleman (1980-84) and James J. McCafferty (1979-80).
VISIBILITYThe Horizon League has enhanced its media visibility with

For over 30 years, Cleveland State’s natatorium has earned its place among the elite swimming facilities in the United States and has enjoyed a rich history of champion-ships and outstanding swimmers. A new chapter in that history was written in the fall of 1999 when the facility was officially dedicated as The Robert F. Busbey Natatorium after CSU’s long-time swimming coach and athletic direc-tor, Bob Busbey. Despite all the prestige, however, the one part of the natatorium that has continued to stand out over the years is how advanced the pool’s design is when com-pared to others around the country.
When it opened in 1973 as the CSU Natatorium, it was considered special simply because it was one of only two university indoor pools in the state of Ohio that was 50 meters in length. Since there were not many other pools like it in the country, it received immediate notice from the rest of the swimming community.
However, there were other aspects of the pool that made it unusual. The one feature that immediately stood out was the pool’s large gutters, which made it extremely fast compared to those of other schools. In March of 1975, the NCAA decided to examine the theory itself when it scheduled the NCAA Division I and II Championships in Cleveland for the very first time. Over the course of con-secutive weekends, the NCAA came to the conclusion that the Busbey Natatorium was one of a kind.
Following this historic meet, the NCAA gave in to the demands of swimmers and coaches alike and decided to
return the championship meet to Cleveland State. When the 1977 Division I Championships were completed, there was no doubt left as to which pool was superior in the United States. The meet featured the shatter-ing of sixteen NCAA records; a mark that still stands today. In fact, the 1977 finals were later termed as “The greatest swim-mers in the fastest pool at the greatest meet in history” by none other than the NCAA itself.
Two years later, the meet returned to Cleveland, and, after
a five year lapse, it was back again for a fourth time in 1984 to sellout crowds yet again. Since that time, the pool has been an eleven-time host site of the Eastern Intercollegiate Championships and hosted the Penn-Ohio Conference Championships a staggering 17 times.
The natatorium has been the site of championships of all shapes and sizes during its history, including six Horizon League Championships. What may stand out the most is the variety of the 16 national aquatic champion-ships that have been held at Cleveland State. These events include United States international diving meets, AAU and YMCA national championships, the National Water Polo Championships and the World Swimming Games for the Deaf.
The natatorium has remained dear to the hearts of United States swimmers as it has been used by the 1976 United States Olympic Swimming and Diving Teams, the 1980 Olympic Diving Team and the 1984 Olympic Swim Team for their practices. The pool has even witnessed record-breaking performances by United States gold medal winners Tom Jager, Matt Biondi, Greg Louganis and Pablo Morales. In addition, the October 22, 2002 issue of Sports Illustrated ranked the Busbey Natatorium the sixth fastest pool in America.
The structure of the Busbey Natatorium itself is even unique. The fact that an incredible 933,000 gallons of water are needed to fill the pool is unusual. The natatori-um measures 50 meters in length (with nine eight-foot competitive lanes) by 25 yards wide (with 23 seven-foot competitive lanes) with racing lanes measuring 12 to 16-1/2 feet deep. Below the surface, the pool features underwater speakers and six underwater windows which provide the CSU staff with an excellent coaching tool.
Also, the pool utilizes an automatic touchpad timing system for up to ten lanes during meets. In terms of diving competitions, the natatorium includes two one-meter maxiflex boards, two three-meter maxiflex boards, and a diving tower with platforms at 5, 7-1/2, and 10 meters.
The pool’s uniqueness is not limited to simply the main pool itself. The south stands feature a 25-yard instructional pool which is also very useful as a warm up/cool down pool for competitions.
In ceremonies held on October 2, 1999, the 1,500-seat CSU Natatorium was officially renamed The Robert F.
Busbey Natatorium, in honor of long-time swimming coach and athletic director, Robert Busbey. Over a span of nearly a half-century, beginning with his enrollment at Fenn College in 1946, Busbey impacted the University’s sports program as only a special few men have at any collegiate institution.
As a four-sport athlete, Busbey was Fenn’s first All-American, gaining national prominence by winning that honor as a swimmer in both 1948 and 1949 and failing by the tiniest margin for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team in 1950. He went on to serve as head coach of his alma mater for 30 years. During his coaching tenure, he was named assistant coach for the 1964 U.S. Olympic Team, served as chairman of the NCAA Swimming Committee and was responsible for bringing five NCAA Championships to CSU.
For his accomplishments, Busbey was honored with the 1982 National Collegiate & Scholastic Swimming Trophy, one of the sport’s highest awards.
In 1966, Busbey succeeded Homer E. Woodling as Cleveland State’s Director of Athletics. Over a span of 24 years in that position, he developed a flourishing program and became a prime force in the planning and building of CSU’s athletic facilities, including Krenzler Field, the CSU Convocation Center and the Physical Education Building.
Unanimously voted a charter member of the CSU Athletic Hall of Fame when it opened in 1975, Busbey became Associate Vice President for Athletic Affairs in 1990 and continued to serve his alma mater until his retirement in 1994.
For all its special features and the amount of events it has hosted in its 32 years, The Robert F. Busbey Natatorium truly enjoys one of the most fascinating histo-ries of any aquatic facility in the United States.
