Frances E. Miller Memorial Golf Course has been the home to Murray State Golf since 1983.The course recently drew praises after hosting the 2007 Kentucky State Women’s Amateur, the top women’s event in Kentucky. It was the fi rst major championship for Miller and probably won’t be the last.

Will Snodgrass is the greens superintendent and general manager of the facility.

Miller Memorial was named one of the “Best Places to Play” by Golf Digest in 2006 and in the 1990’s, USA Today named the course one of the best 130 lay outs in the United States.

Miller Memorial hosted the 1987 Ohio Valley Conference men’s cham pi on ship and the 1995 and 1999 OVC wom en’s cham pi on ships. It has also staged various oth er tour na ments, in clud ing the 1989 Jun ior KGA/PGA Cham pi on ships.

Measuring 6,592 yards from the cham pi on ship tees, the par-71 layout has two dis tinct nines which require a wide array of shot-making. Miller is home to small and subtly undulated greens.

The out ward nine is set on hilly terrain with tree lined fairways, while the in ward half rewards length and accurate long iron play.

The longest hole, the par-5 17th, is 535 yards long, and the shortest hole on the course is the par-3 16th, mea sur ing 171 yards.

Miller Memorial is the perfect home course for the Racers to improve their games. The lay out presents a challenge and the practice facility MSU’s team enjoys is second to none.

In 2007, MSU golf moved into a completely renovated clubhouse that showcases locker rooms for both the men’s and women’s teams, plus a lounge area for the MSU players. The new Miller clubhouse has a fully stocked pro-shop and snack bar and a new picnic pavilion was also added.

The beautiful tract of land for the course was donated by L.D. Miller, a 1937 grad u ate of Murray State. The course is named for his late wife, un der the pro vi sion that the land be used for a golf course pri ma ri ly for MSU stu dents, fac ul ty and staff.

Miller Memorial Golf Course, de signed by Jack Kidwell and Mike Hurdzan of Co lum bus, Ohio, is lo cat ed just six miles from cam pus on Ky. High way 280 off of Ky. High way 94 east of Murray, near the sce nic Land Between the Lakes.

More information can be found at Miller Memorial’s offi cial web site: www.murraystate.edu/millergolf/.

The game of golf is about integrity, tradition and precision and Murray State could’ve had no better representative of these ideals than Raymond “Buddy” Hewitt who served as the MSU men’s golf coach for 41 years. He was inducted into the Golf Coaches Association of America Hall of Fame January 3, 2002, in Orlando, Fla. Hewitt, who retired after the 2001 season, is a member of the Racer Athletics Hall of Fame and led MSU to three Ohio Valley Conference titles. He was also named OVC Coach of the Year four times and 17 times during his career, Hewitt’s teams fi nished in the top-three at the OVC Championship. During his 41 years, the 1960 MSU graduate coached six All-Americans and his student-athletes earned OVC Player of the Year honors fi ve times. In 1967 the Racers fi nished second at the NCAA Championships in the College Division. Hewitt played football at MSU and was a member of the team that played in the 1948 Tangerine Bowl. He is still active in golf and plays frequently at Miller Memorial. Hewitt and his wife Nani reside in Murray.

EddieHUNT9th Season

Murray State1966

Eddie Hunt is in his ninth season as the coach of the Murray State men’s golf program and the future has never looked brighter than it does right now.

The Racers are coming off a fall season in which they scored one win, a second and third place fi nish. Over the last three and a half seasons that cover 41 events, Coach Hunt’s teams have earned 31 top-5 fi nishes including 12 wins. In Hunt’s eight seasons, the Racers have won 20 times.

Hunt began as interim head coach in the 2001-2002 season when legendary coach Buddy Hewitt retired. Hunt was eventually named head coach and moved the program to another level.

So far, the Ohio Valley Conference title has been elusive, but the Racers are building a team that can win after fi nishing second and third three times each under Hunt’s leadership.

Hunt has attracted exceptional talent to the Murray State program over the years producing 18 All-OVC and All-OVC Tournament Team honors. Current student-athlete Nick Newcomb was the OVC Tour-nament Medalist and Cameron Carrico was named OVC Freshman of the Year in 2008.

In 2007, the Racer Golf program was named to the Golf Digest Top-50 College Golf Programs, MSU was ranked 49th. The maga-zine rated all collegiate golf programs on more than what goes on a scorecard. Five categories determined the rankings including: team adjusted scoring average, player improvement, academics, climate, and ratings of the head coach and school facilities.

“I can’t take credit for this, because without good student-athletes, a coach can’t do much,” Hunt said. “We’ve been able to bring in young men who had a fi re in their hearts for the game of golf and they were not only good players, but good people.”

A 1966 graduate of Murray State, Hunt spent most of his profes-sional career in the business sector as a co-owner of Dennison-Hunt Sporting Goods in Murray from 1974-2001.

Hunt received a bachelor’s degree in business from Murray State in 1966, then served in the United States Army from 1966-68, serving as an offi cer in Vietnam from ‘66-’67. Following his military service, Hunt worked in the MSU Student Affairs offi ce and earned his master’s in education in 1969 and then earned a specialist in college teaching degree (SCT) in 1971.

Eddie Hunt’s teams at Murray State have posted 19 tournament championships in the last seven seasons.

Born and raised in Paducah, Ky., Hunt is married to the former Lanette Underwood of Murray. The couple has two sons, Jason and Jeremy, and two grandchildren, Lindey, 15, and Jay, 9.

Allen Ward joined the Murray State athlet-ics department as its director on March 30, 2005. Since his ar-

rival, there has been a prevailing theme that symbolizes his administration: steady and signifi cant progress. “It’s an honor to serve as Director of Athletics at Murray State.” said Ward. “I’m very pleased with the direction of the program and confi dent it’s positioned for long-term success.” The most recent illustration of Ward’s stamp on the program was Murray State’s capturing of the 2008-09 OVC Commissioners Cup, a symbol of overall athletic excellence in OVC sponsored championships. “The OVC Commissioners Cup signifi es excellence throughout the entire program,” said Ward. “It’s a good barometer in measuring the overall success of any athletic department and it’s exactly what I envisioned when I came to Murray State”. It’s the fi rst time since 1991 that MSU won the all-sports trophy, now known as the OVC Commissioners Cup. Ten of Murray’s fi fteen sports fi nished third place or higher, with three sports winning league championships. Ward also emphasizes the importance of achievement in the classroom as well. “Our motto is Four Years – Two Goals. We want every student-athlete to leave Murray State with a degree in one hand and a championship ring on the other,” states Ward unrelentingly. “I fully expect our student-athletes to take advantage of their opportunity to receive a quality education while competing at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics.” Each of the past four years, the graduation rates for student-athletes have

surpassed that of the general student body. Ward makes no secret where he intends to take the program. “I expect to be a leader in the OVC in everything we do. I expect to win championships and advance to compete on the national stage. I intend to continue to move the program forward,” states Ward. And Murray moving forward is exactly what has been happening. Over $3.5 mil-lion in athletic facility enhancements have been made touching every sport and unit. The department successfully completed its 10-year NCAA Recertifi cation process. The overall APR scores for the department now sur-pass 960, and the cumulative GPA for student-athletes for the spring, 2009 semester was 3.06. Under Ward’s leadership, the Racer Club was established as the annual fund raising arm of the department and continues to thrive, the sport of softball was introduced to the var-sity line-up, additional staff was added in areas vital to student-athlete achievement, a com-prehensive Title IX plan was developed and enacted, the Racer Television Network was unveiled, and the athletic program became an offi cial NCAA CHAMPS / Life Skills member. Ward has also had to successfully manage unprecedented turnover with head coaching positions and senior level staff, most notably with its high profi le positions. New coaches have been hired for men’s basketball, women’s basketball, football, women’s soccer, soft-ball, rifl e, and strength and conditioning. “I like our coaches and staff; it’s a really good group, and they work extremely hard,” noted Ward. “They know what it takes to win championships, but also teach the im-

portance of achieving academically as well.” It’s very clear Ward has a passion and de-votion for student-athletes and college athletics. “Their success, and providing the tools nec-essary to perform at the highest level, is my top priority,” says Ward. “We’re a proud program with a rich tradition that’s fortunate to have ex-traordinary university leadership. We will con-tinue to win championships while, at the same time, prepare our athletes to excel long after they have played their last game for Murray State.” Ward, 42, came to Murray State from the University of North Texas, where he served in numerous capacities over 14 years for the Division I BCS program, including the last six years as Senior Associate Athletics Director. A native of Rolla, Missouri, Ward is a 1989 graduate of William Jewell College and earned his master’s degree from Wichita State University. Ward and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Nathan, 11, and Nicole, 8.
