B e t h A c r e m a n became Murray State University’s second head women’s soccer coach April 10, 2006. The advances the program has shown in her three seasons have been a joy to watch as the Racers have been posit ioned for high achievements.

BUILDING A CHAMPIONSHIP PROGRAMMSU Soccer comes off the program’s fi rst Ohio Valley Conference regular-season championship in 2008, which included a school-record 12 wins.

“2008 was a wonderful season,” Acreman said. “I enjoyed coaching the team we had and they enjoyed playing together and being part of something special.” The foundation for a championship in 2008 was set during Acreman’s fi rst season in 2006.

Her fi rst Racer squad made many improvements and fi nished 5-9-4, but in the 2007 season, the team jumped to a different level. Murray State’s 11-8 overall mark and 6-3 record in the OVC set a program record for most wins in a single season and tied the team mark for conference victories. Somis Sports named the Racers as the 11th most improved squad in the nation, and Soccer Buzz tabbed MSU as one of the teams to watch in 2008.

“Our team has come a long way in the last two seasons,” Acreman said. “It has been a joy to see our players improve and our program evolve. I am excited to see where this group can take us because we have learned a lot and hopefully we can improve on last season’s achievements and contend for a championship again.”

ACHIEVING IN THE CLASSROOMNot only has MSU Soccer achieved great things on the fi eld in the Beth Acreman era, the Racers are also performing at a high level in the classroom.

In her three seasons at MSU, Beth Acreman has produced teams that have ranked among the best in the nation. In the 2007-08 school year, the Racers reached the top when they were recognized by the

National Soccer Coaches Association of America with the best grade point average in the nation among all NCAA D-I schools. MSU’s GPA of 3.61 shared the top spot with Central Michigan University.

“All our student-athletes have worked hard both on and off the fi eld so it was nice to be recognized,” Acreman said. “Leading the nation in GPA was a huge accomplishment and will be something we will strive to continue in the future.”

In Acreman’s three seasons at MSU, she has produced 112 student-athletes that have earned MSU Dean’s List honors.

ACREMAN BEFORE MURRAY STATEAcreman’s accomplishments at Murray State are no surprise. She prepared for her fi rst job as a head coach at Middle Tennessee, which proved to be an excellent training ground. During her time in Murfreesboro, Tenn., as an assistant coach, the Blue Raiders compiled a 64-48-7 record, won the 2004 Sun Belt Conference Championship and broke or tied the school record for wins in a season four times. During the same time, the Blue Raiders lost just three Sun Belt Conference matches, going a combined 17-3-5 in league games.

Prior to arriving at Middle Tennessee State, Acreman completed a stint with the UK Elite Soccer Academy

in New Jersey and served as the head coach at the American Community School in London.

Acreman holds the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Premier Diploma, the highest coaching level of the NSCAA. In addition, she holds two NSCAA goalkeeping diplomas. She is also a head coach for the US Olympic Development program and is a course instructor for Kentucky Youth Soccer.

Acreman is a native of Yateley, England and graduated from Barton College (N.C.) with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1999. She was a team captain, three-time CVAC All-Conference performer and an All-South Region selection. She was a two-sport athlete competing in soccer and basketball.

She earned a master’s degree in health, physical edu-cation, recreation and safety from MTSU in 2002.

Claire Ward is in her second season with MSU Soccer after coaching for two seasons with the Fort Wayne academy soccer program.

She has played in the W-League in each of the past fi ve seasons.

Ward played for then assistant coach Beth Acreman from 2003-05 at Middle Tennessee where she was a three-time all-conference selection in the Sun Belt Conference.

As a freshman in 2003 she was the Sun Belt Newcomer of the Year and ended her career at MTSU as one of only four players in program’s history to be named all-conference three straight years. Ward started all 60 games while at the school.

Ward attended Reid Kerr College in Ayr, Scotland and also played for the Scotland Junior National Team for four years.

She earned a degree in physical education from Middle Tennessee in 2006.

Iwaszkowiec was a key player at Clemson in a program that played in the NCAA Tournament two times with each reaching the quarterfi nals.

He was drafted by the Minnesota Thunder of the USL, but chose to pursue an opportunity in business. While working as a marketing director, he coached various club and high school teams.

He completed a degree in marketing at Clemson in 1999 and earned a master’s degree in theology from Bethel Seminary (MN) in 2006.

Once the home facility for Murray State football, Cutchin Field is now the home fi eld for Murray State soccer.

Located beside the Curris Cen ter and across the street from Rac er Are na, Cutchin Field has un der gone many chang es over the years.

The facility features a 72-by-114-yard Bermuda playing fi eld, a state-of-the-art score-board, and a sprin kler system to keep the fi eld perfect at all times.

Player shelters like those seen at the professional and world cham pi on ship level are in place at both bench es and the scorer’s table.

In 2008, the Racers moved into the brand new Crisp Soccer-Tennis Complex. The new facility adjacent to Cutchin Field features locker rooms, coaches offi ce, and athletic training space.

One of the charming features of Cutchin Field is that it is in the middle of campus and is very accessable to students who attend matches in large numbers.

Cutchin Field was the home of Murray State football from 1924 to 1972. The Thor-oughbreds — later to be called the Racers — won 142 football games here including the inaugural OVC championship in 1948.

The fi eld is named for multi-sport coach Carlisle Cutchin, who was Murray State’s second football coach (1925-30), and the fi rst men’s basketball coach (1925-41), and he also coached baseball at MSU (1928-32, 1941, 1946-53). Cutchin had a combined record of 391-208-7 (.651) in 36 sea sons as a head coach in three sports.

He was inducted into the Murray State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1970, the fi rst coach to earn the honor.

Cutchin Field has a long-standing and successful sports history, dating almost to the founding of Murray State itself.

After a 30-year hiatus from varsity sports, its tradition continues as the setting for Racer soccer.

2008 Season Review2008 Season ReviewFor as long as the Murray State Soccer program puts a team on the fi eld, the 2008 season will always be talked about as one of the greatest seasons in history.

When the program was started in 2000, the goal was to some day be the Ohio Valley Conference champion.

The record will show that on Oct. 26, 2008, the Racers accomplished that goal when they clinched their fi rst regular-season title with a 4-0 home win over Tennessee Tech.

The records broken in 2008 were too many to count both by individuals and the team. But the program record 12 wins for coach Beth Acreman and squad was very impressive.

“My whole goal in 2008 was to create a team that plays soccer,” Acreman said. “We put on a good show and it was fun because we had a great group of young women who were so focused right from the start. I just wish the season would’ve fi nished better, we all do.”

Indeed, the 2008 season ended in heartbreaking fashion.

OVC TOURNAMENT SHOWDOWNThe Racers were 7-1-1 in OVC play in the regular season with their only loss coming to Morehead State.

Sure enough, the two met at MSU’s Cutchin Field in the semifi nals of the OVC Tournament.

The Racers fell behind early but tied the match in the 28th minute when Sophie Hargreaves made a penalty kick, and MSU had the lead in the 72nd minute on a goal from Kalli McCoy. But the Eagles tied it at 2-2 and the epic match eventually went to a shootout where the Racers fell 5-4.

“We kept to our game plan and they kept to theirs,” Acreman said. “We just didn’t get a goal when we needed it. Shootouts are horrible for the players when it comes down to one shot.”

MSU GETS THE HARDWARESeven Racers and head coach Beth Acreman received All-Ohio Valley Conference Soccer honors after a great season.

MSU sophomore goalkeeper Tara Isbell was named OVC Defensive Player of the Year and All-OVC First Team, while seniors Rebekah Clay and Melisa Curry were also named to the All-OVC First Team, along with sophomore Katie Wilson. MSU freshman Sophie Hargreaves was named to the All-OVC Second Team, while two freshmen, Rachel Wright and Veronika Pribyslavska were on the All-OVC Newcomer team.

MSU Head Coach Beth Acreman was named the OVC Coach of the Year.

“All conference awards are a testimony to the success of our team,” Acreman said. “I know each one of our

student-athletes understands that it has been a team effort all season and these awards are shared.”

MSU FIELD GENERAL – BETH ACREMANGoing into her fourth season as head coach at MSU, Acreman is MSU’s fi rst OVC Coach of the Year. Her team improved week by week in 2008 and she shares the honor with student-athletes and staff.

“I am very honored to receive the coach of the year award,” Acreman said. “It is a tribute to the hard work of my team and staff. A coach is only as good as the people around them and I could not ask for a better group. I am proud and privileged to work with such a motivated team.”

ISBELL HELPS LOCKDOWN OPPONENTSTara Isbell was MSU’s fi rst OVC Defensive Player of the Year. She covered the MSU net in every minute of 20 matches, breaking her own record for minutes played in a single season with 1875:46. Isbell also broke her 2007 program record, with her 0.91 goals against average. She also set the single-season mark with eight shutouts.

As with any good goalkeeper, the defenders in front of Isbell also share in the award. MSU’s defense, perhaps

the best in the league, kept the shots that Isbell had to face to a minimum.

“Tara was great in goal all season,” Acreman said. “She had a solid group of defenders in front of her and together they had a great season.”

RACER SENIOR SALUTERebekah Clay, Melisa Curry, and Krista Muilkens were

three of MSU’s fi ve seniors that were the foundation of the Racer program since 2005. Clay fi nished as MSU’s fi rst four-time All-OVC pick. Muilkens and Clay made their mark on the program as they each rank among the best in MSU history.

NEWCOMERS MAKE THEIR MARKSeveral fi rst-year players helped make 2008 a great season. Freshmen Rachel Wright and Veronika Pribyslavska played on opposite ends of the fi eld and performed well for the Racers. Wright led MSU with 18 points on six goals and six assists, and Pribyslavaska was a solid performer on the Racers back line, logging more than 1,400 match minutes.

DANGEROUS FOOT IN THE MIDDLEAnother MSU freshman, Sophie Hargreaves, made an impact. She was selected to the All-OVC Second Team after she led the team in shots with 70. She started in all 20 matches in 2008, with fi ve goals and two assists, and she tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals.

BREAKTHROUGH SOPHOMORE Katie Wilson improved on a solid freshman season in 2007 and became an All-OVC pick as a sophomore. She tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals and had 13 points, on fi ve goals and three assists.

“Katie Wilson has grown so much as a player and I am so happy that her hard work has been recognized,” Acreman said. “She scored some fantastic goals this year to help elevate her team.”

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2009“There isn’t anything more I could’ve asked of our team in 2008, they gave it everything they had and that’s all you can ask,” Acreman said. “But I’m happy with where the Racer Soccer program is going and I’m really looking forward to 2009.”

Tara Isbell earned All-OVC Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2008.

Director of AthleticsDirector of Athletics

AllenAllenWardWard

Allen Ward joined the Murray State athletics department as its director on March 30, 2005. Since his arrival, there has been a prevailing theme that symbolizes his administration: steady and signifi cant progress.

“It’s an honor to serve as Director of Athletics at Murray State.” said Ward. “I’m very pleased with the direction of the program and confi dent it’s positioned for long-term success.”

The most recent illustration of Ward’s stamp on the program was Murray State’s capturing of the 2008-09 OVC Commissioners Cup, a symbol of overall athletic excellence in OVC sponsored championships.

“The OVC Commissioners Cup signifi es excellence throughout the entire program,” said Ward. “It’s a good barometer in measuring the overall success of any athletic department and it’s exactly what I envisioned when I came to Murray State”.

It’s the fi rst time since 1991 that MSU won the all-sports trophy, now known as the OVC Commissioners Cup. Ten of Murray’s fi fteen sports fi nished third place or higher, with three sports winning league championships.

Ward also emphasizes the importance of achievement in the classroom as well.

“Our motto is Four Years – Two Goals. We want every student-athlete to leave Murray State with a degree in one hand and a championship ring on the other,” states Ward unrelentingly. “I fully expect our student-athletes to take advantage of their opportunity to receive a quality education while competing at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics.”

Each of the past four years, the graduation rates for student-athletes have surpassed that of the general student body.

Ward makes no secret where he intends to take the program.

“I expect to be a leader in the OVC in everything we do. I expect to win championships and advance to compete on the national stage. I intend to continue to move the program forward,” states Ward.

And Murray moving forward is exactly what has been happening. Over $3.5 million in athletic facility enhancements have been made touching every sport and unit.

The department successfully completed its 10-year NCAA Recertifi cation process. The overall APR scores for the department now surpass 960, and the cumulative GPA for student-athletes for the spring, 2009 semester was 3.06.

Under Ward’s leadership, the Racer Club was established as the annual fund raising arm of the department and continues to thrive, the sport of softball was introduced to the varsity line-up, additional staff was added in areas vital to student-athlete achievement, a comprehensive Title IX plan was developed and enacted, the Racer Television Network was unveiled, and the athletic program became an offi cial NCAA CHAMPS / Life Skills member.

Ward has also had to successfully manage unprecedented turnover with head coaching positions and senior level staff, most notably with its high profi le positions. New coaches have been hired for men’s basketball, women’s basketball, football, women’s soccer, softball, rifl e, and strength and conditioning.

“I like our coaches and staff; it’s a really good group, and they work extremely hard,” noted Ward. “They know what it takes to win championships, but also teach the importance of achieving academically as well.”

The Ward family: Sharon, Allen, Nicole and Nathan.

It’s very clear Ward has a passion and devotion for student-athletes and college athletics.

“Their success, and providing the tools necessary to perform at the highest level, is my top priority,” says Ward. “We’re a proud program with a rich tradition that’s fortunate to have extraordinary university leadership. We will continue to win championships while, at the same time, prepare our athletes to excel long after they have played their last game for Murray State.”

Ward, 42, came to Murray State from the University of North Texas, where he served in numerous capacities over 14 years for the Division I BCS program, including the last six years as Senior Associate Athletics Director.

A native of Rolla, Missouri, Ward is a 1989 graduate of William Jewell College and earned his master’s degree from Wichita State University. Ward and his wife, Sharon, have two children: Nathan, 11, and Nicole, 8.

Backing up its commitment to ensure that Racer student-athletes have every opportunity to excel in the classroom as well as on the athletic fi elds, Murray State athletics established a state-of-the-art academic center.

Named in honor of longtime supporters Jan and Dick Weaver, who provided funding for the building of the center, the Weaver Academic Enhancement Center was opened at Roy Stewart Stadium on June 30, 1997, and immediately began to pay dividends in the MSU athletics program.

Today, the Weaver Center is a spacious facility equipped with individual and group study areas, but the centerpiece of the Weaver Center is its computer lab.

In 2007, the lab was outfi tted with 15 new desktop computers. Student-athletes can use the computers to access the internet for research and to complete class projects and papers.

MSU student-athletes also use the Weaver Center for study hall, which meets throughout the day. During study hall, student-athletes have access to tutors, study groups and computers.

The center continues to play a key role in the academic success of MSU student-athletes. For the 2008-09 academic year 152 student-athletes had a 3.5 or higher grade point average and 37 had perfect 4.0 GPA’s.

The center is open 12 hours a day, six days a week during the school year, with an abbreviated schedule during the summer and holidays.

The CampusSince its founding in 1922, Murray State has gained a reputation for having one of the most beautiful campuses in the country.

Adding to the natural scenic beauty of the campus are the many well-maintained and aesthetically-pleasing buildings. Over the years, MSU has kept its historical look despite making several additions.

Residential Colleges Through the Residential College system, Murray State offers students a way of collegiate life that leads to individual and team success. In 1998, MSU decided to transform its housing complex (dormitories) into separate colleges where students who share the same majors or educational pursuits share the entire collegiate experience. In essence, Murray State didn’t just make a transformation; it separated itself from other higher education institutions.

From the moment students enroll at Murray State, they become a part of their own residential college within the university. It means belonging. It means each college will have its own government, its own athletic teams, its own faculty ombudsperson and its own traditions.

When the Chronicle of Higher Education featured MSU’s improved style of education, it wrote of “a sense of college unity” and “competition that carries over into the classroom.” The Times of London referred to the idea as a vision of Oxford University in Kentucky.

The system is closest to elite U.S. universities, such as Harvard and Yale, which assign their many students to residential houses,” wrote the Times. Student Life

Murray State University offers an active, vibrant and challenging environment for its students. From the classroom to the residential college room, the Murray State experience is one which students will harbor for a lifetime.

In the classroom, educators are dedicated to seeing each student reach his or her potential. Class size is about 30 to 35 students.

Outside of the classroom, Murray State offers many athletic and social programs. Intramural sports operate year-round, while fraternities and sororities allow students to form bonds with “brothers” and “sisters” which will last a lifetime. Murray State also attracts a wide array of nationally-acclaimed speakers, top concerts and other events.

Perhaps the biggest event on campus each year is Homecoming. Each fall, thousands of alumni return to Murray State to renew old friendships and visit the place they called home for four years.

Racer AthleticsThe university’s intercollegiate athletic programs are a source of tradition, school pride, spirit and entertainment for students, alumni and community members alike. Competing at the highest level of college athletics, MSU is a member of NCAA Division I and is a founding member of the Ohio Valley Conference with its 16-team program.

Murray State is committed to athletic excellence, which is evident by its 96 OVC championships in the 54 years that the Racers have been competing in the league.

One of the greatest benefi ts of Racer athletics to Murray State is the attention and acclaim which it brings to the university. The Murray State men’s basketball team has achieved extensive notoriety by competing in the NCAA Tournament in most years. Also, the Racers fi nd themselves being written about in such publications as Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine, The Sporting News, USA Today and dozens of publications and newspapers across the country. Additionally, Murray State is featured several times each year on ESPN as part of their college basketball broadcasts.

Murray State has also sent its share of players to the NFL, the NBA, Major League Baseball and other professional leagues around the world.

Local CommunityLocated in the city of Murray in Calloway County in the southwestern corner of Kentucky, Murray State is surrounded by a neighborly Main Street community of nearly 36,000 people. Known for its friendly citizens and beautiful, wooded landscape, Murray/Calloway County is a growing and thriving area.

In addition to its strong educational, employment and quality of life opportunities, Murray/Calloway County’s location is benefi cial in many ways. Located in the Jackson Purchase region of western Kentucky, Murray is eight miles from Tennessee, 50 miles from Illinois, 65 miles from Missouri and 150 miles from Indiana, making it easily able to draw students from fi ve different states. Also, four major cities (St. Louis, Nashville, Memphis, Louisville) are within a few hours’ driving distance from Murray.

One of the biggest attractions in western Kentucky is scenic Kentucky Lake and the Land Between the Lakes. Just a 15-minute drive from the Murray State campus are boating, fi shing, hunting, camping and hiking opportunities, which students often take advantage of during fall and spring weekends.

BRAD WALKERInterim Commissioner

Entering its 62nd year, the Ohio Valley Conference embarks on a new era while continuing to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference.

In 2008 the conference again expanded with the addition of Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. The Cougars will begin play in women’s softball in the 2010-11 season, while the rest of their teams begin in 2011-12.

In 2003, the OVC extended its geographical footprint into Alabama for the fi rst time with the addition of Jacksonville State University and Samford University.

Samford left the OVC after the 2007-08 season to join the Southern Conference.

The OVC’s proud past dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Murray State athletics director Roy Stewart, Eastern Kentucky athletics director Charles “Turkey” Hughes and Western Kentucky public relations director Kelly Thompson fi rst broached the idea of forming a new conference.

Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but re-emerged on Feb. 27-28, 1948, at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville, as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC.

In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more signifi cant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the fi rst non-traditionally black mid-southern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African- Americans.

In the late 1970s, women’s athletics began a rebirth on the national scene, as the NCAA began sponsoring and marketing women’s sports. Recognizing the need to provide increased opportunities for female athletes, the OVC established women’s championships in basketball, tennis, track, cross country and volleyball.

The prestigious OVC Academic Achievement Banner is awarded annually to the league school whose athletes produce the highest grade-point average when compared to the general student body. Also, six Scholar-Athlete Awards are presented yearly to male and female athletes, while others are commended by being Medal of Honor recipients or earning a spot on the Commissioner’s Honor Roll.

Additionally, the Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award — named in honor of the former Morehead State student-athlete, coach and athletics director — is presented annually to a junior or senior student-athlete with

signifi cant athletic contributions who best exemplifi es the characteristics of sportsmanship and citizenship.

The vision of leadership demonstrated by the founding fathers in 1948 remains alive today as the Ohio Valley Conference prepares for the future. One example is in regard to the current trend in collegiate athletics administration for increased involvement of university presidents in setting policies and making rules. The presidents of OVC institutions, however, have always governed the Conference, long before presidential governance became a national theme.
