How do channel bass (puppy drum) use their

adaptation to escape predators?

Page 3: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

They have a marking on their tail that looks like an eye. This confuses hungry predators who attack their tail instead of their head. Pretty cool!!

How do people use rivers and lakes in NC for recreation and their daily needs?

Page 5: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Rivers provide drinking water, rushing water for electricity, and fish for food.

Page 6: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

How do people enjoy NC’s rivers and lakes?

Page 7: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

They can go boating, swimming, fishing on lakes

and rivers.

Page 8: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

How do hurricanes affect a river’s erosion and why?

Page 9: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

A hurricane brings lots of water and wind, causing a quick and dramatic change to a river.

Page 10: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

How were rivers important to the lives of early settlers of NC?

Page 11: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Early settlers used rivers to water their crops, travel on boat, catching fish, and for daily living needs such as drinking and bathing.

Page 12: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

What types of animals can be found in wetland habitats?

Page 13: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Some animals are alligators, deer, turtles, ducks, snakes, fish

Page 14: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

What features do forests provide animals for their survival?

Page 15: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Forests provide food, shelter, and water for animal survival.

Page 16: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

What effect does losing a forest have on an animal?

Page 17: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

A loss of a forest habitat can cause animals to die, move to

another habitat, or even become extinct.

Page 18: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Why are wetlands in NC popular for migrating waterfowl and

shorebirds?

Page 19: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

The wetlands provide a safe place for those birds to rest and nest and provide food.

Page 20: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

How is a wetland helpful to humans?

Page 21: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

They provide shellfish such as oysters

and fish for seafood.

Page 22: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

What is brackish water?

Page 23: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Brackish water is where fresh water rivers meet the salty waters

of the ocean.

Page 24: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

What is the Tidewater?

Page 25: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

The Tidewater area is the closest part of the Coastal

Plain to the ocean.

Page 26: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

How do animals rely on wetlands?

Page 27: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Wetlands provide a safe place to live, food and nutrition for animals and fish.

Page 28: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

What are barrier islands?

Page 29: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Barrier Islands are small islands that are located just off the coast of NC. They are changed by erosion caused by hurricanes.

An example is the Outer Banks.

Page 30: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

What is a negative effect of pollution in our wetlands?

Page 31: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Pollution harms fish, birds, and animals that live or depend on the wetlands for their survival.

This also affects humans because we eat seafood from the

wetlands. EEEEK!

Page 32: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Describe the land in the Coastal Plain

Region.

Page 33: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

The land is flat, has ‘wetlands’, swamps, the ocean, and has

sandy soil.

Page 34: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

What is the purpose of a lighthouse?

Page 35: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Lighthouses act like traffic signals for ships on our coast to guide them around dangerous

areas.

Page 36: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

What is an inlet and what can cause them to change?

Page 37: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

An inlet is an opening between islands. This can change with erosion from tides and hurricanes.

Page 38: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

What is a cape and give an example of one on our coast?

Page 39: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

A cape is a strip of land sticking out into to the ocean. An

example is Cape Hatteras.

Page 40: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

What is a pocosin and give an example of one in NC.

Page 41: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

A pocosin is a Native American term meaning a swamp on a hill with bushes and shrubs. Ex: Great Dismal Swamp.

Page 42: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

What is something special about the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse?

Page 43: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

It was moved 2900 feet to avoid falling into the ocean due to extreme erosion.

Page 44: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

What is a ‘National Seashore”?

Page 45: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

A national seashore is where both the land and the water are protected by the US Government to prevent damage by people. Cape Hatteras was the first in the US!

Page 46: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Who was Catfish Hunter?

Page 47: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Catfish Hunter was a famous baseball pitcher from NC. He is

in the Hall of Fame!

Page 48: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Why does NC have the nickname, “Graveyard of the

Atlantic”?

Page 49: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

There are many sunken ships lying on the ocean floor off of the coast of NC, like a graveyard. Looks like those shifting sandbars and dangerous waters were too tough for them! Many fish make their homes in the old wrecks now~cozy!!

Page 50: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

How are dams helpful in the production of electricity?

Page 51: 200 300 400 500 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 200 300 400 500 100 Rivers & Lakes Habitats WetlandsShape of the LandCoastal.

Dams help control the force of rushing water used for hydroelectricity.
