BROADWAY AT THE HUB KISS ME KATE / JUNE 25 FRIDAY The Hub’s new series presents filmed live performances of major Broadway shows, not screen adaptations. debuted on December 2, 1948 at the New Century Theatre in New York. The musical's storyline was written by husband and wife team Bella and Samuel Spewack with music and lyrics by the incomparable Cole Porter. The original Broadway show won the very first Best Musical Tony award in 1949. The play tells the story of a musical interpretation of Shakespeare's and the show's director, producer and star's on-and-off-screen conflict with his leading lady, who happens to be his ex-wife. We present an August, 2002 filmed performance from the revival launched in London's West End at the Victoria Palace Theatre on October 30, 2001. Paul Marino introduces the performance and leads a discussion. $10 includes glass of wine or bottle of water MUSIC NIGHT / JUNE 11 A JOHNNY CASH TRIBUTE WITH MARK CHIRICO FRIDAY A seasoned singer/songwriter with musical roots in classic rock and country, Chirico’s idol in the country genre is Johnny Cash. His sets include Cash favorites and his own original music that's influenced by Johnny's devotion to being a voice for the underdog. The evening showcases well-known songs, recordings from the "American" catalog and adaptations of current songs that Johnny would have loved. Members $5 / Others $10 ART IN THE FORM OF FILM MURDER BY DEATH / JUNE 18 FRIDAY There are many things to like about (1976) including an ensemble cast featuring Maggie Smith, Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers, and a hilarious screenplay by Neil Simon that draws on classic murder mysteries from the 1930s and 1940s. In short, it’s a parody of screwball comedy with a host of familiar characters. For better or worse, it’s hard to imagine this film being made today as it traffics in cultural stereotypes of Asians and gays. But that is not to say doesn’t still have its avid fans, including many respected film critics who put the film in their top five all-time favorite comedies. See it and judge for yourself!
