So, how fair is it to simply raze a slum to the ground in the name of ‘clean- ing up’ a city? This was the questions Jaipur’s young amateur artists chose to raise at the end of their theatre work- shop, which had been organ- ised by National School of Drama, Sarthak Sanstha and JKK. Directed by Sabir Khan, the play Teen Tappar raised more than a few eye- brows and not all for the right reasons. The crude lan- guage of the play, for in- stance, was not liked by all. However, as the director reasons, “You cannot expect people from slums to speak aristocratically.” Writer Nag Bodas’s script brought out the condition of the poor ef- fectively. The play starts with a man announcing the begin- ning of the play. This is when some people dressed in rags enter the auditorium, and walk up to the stage shout- ing, ‘Rehne ko ghar do, nahin to gaddi chhod do’! From this scene, the actors command the undivided at- tention of their audience. The slum is introduced with a typical morning scene set in dim lights. This is when a government officer arrives to announce the Nagar Swachchata Abhiyan. The slum is going to be razed. From placing a Shiv Linga on the garbage hill to taking out loud rallies, the resident try everything in the book and outside of it to save their home. All in vain! They can’t fight the city hall. The play ends as the char- acters exit the auditorium, the same way they had en- tered. Khan explained that he chose this play, because of its social relevance.
