Editorial

M Nurul IslamEditor-in-Chief

THERE IS ALWAYS HOPE in the darkness. And we sincerely believe in it. Our journey till now has been a journey full of optimism. Without it how can we see the flicker of hope in this age of darkness?

We strode gallantly throughout and achieved one feather after another in our cap. In the beginning of 2019, yet another feather was added. It was a giant leap forward for us. To enable more opportunities in the higher education sector, a foundation stone for our new project, ‘Al-Ameen Mission Institute for Education Research and Training’ was laid in New Town, Rajarhat. When operational, it would provide coaching for the Medical post graduation course and Residential Training Centre for competitive exami-nations conducted by UPSC/WBPSC. Besides, there will be facilities to train teachers as well as non-teaching staffs. There would be provision for higher research in the different fields of education sector too. We believe that soon it would turn into a leading centre of the Mission; the Centre of Excellence.

This year, once again the results in various examinations have been magnificent. The highlight should be the results of the NEET (UG). Around 422 candidates from the Mission have made it into 55 thousand ranks throughout the country. This is, by any yardstick, a big achievement. Like previous years, the boys and girls have done splendid results in Madhyamik once again. The highest score has been scored by a girl, Sumaiya Khatun 677 (96.71%). Her ranking in the state is 14. She is followed by a boy, Ashik Iqbal 676 (96.57%). The result in the Higher Secondary examination too was excellent. Here too, a girl made her way into the state merit list. From Uluberia campus, Safida Khatun (489 marks, 97.8%) became 7th in the ranking. Kazi Faiaz Ahmed ranked 8th in the state merit list scoring 489 marks (97.6%). At the same time he has also occupied 18844 rank in NEET (UG). Sk Jiauddin and Sahil Parvej have scored 482 marks (96.4%) and secured 14th position in the state merit list. Another notable feature is that our students have done well in the Arts stream too. Sk Saharia Trisha, a girl from Patharchapuri campus scored 482 marks (96.4%) and is a probable 14th in the state merit list.

Doubtless, there are numerous follies all around us. But we will continue our journey unflappably and en-thusiastically for the betterment of the society. There cannot be any aberration, whatsoever, in this matter.

But after three decades of our existence, things have changed quite a bit. But still there are many who have remained backward. We must reach out to them and with the help of this Mission we should pull them out from the backwardness, he emphasised. He also informed that besides education, the Mission will facilitate health ser-vices to the rural people in other campuses of the Mis-sion. It already has a health centre at Khalatpur campus.

Member of Parliament of Uluberia Sajda Ahmad vis-ited the campus for the first time. She expressed her gratitude and said that she is very proud that the main

It is all pervading.

We reproduce below the edited speech delivered by M Nurul Islam:-

“In fact, the Bengali literature or in the larger canvas, Indian literature began to flourish during the middle age and it gathered momentum in the colonial time. The Indi-an languages took definite shape and thrived in the mid-

dle age. Mystic literature was a product of that particular age. It was during that time, Persian literature- which was abundantly rich- enlightened India in a new way. It would not be out of context to say that only a century back, in the 19th century, the works of legendary Hafiz, one of the most beloved poets of the Persians, was diligently pursued by the Tagore family of Jorasanko, where Ra-bindranath Tagore was born in 1861. It is also interest-ing to note that his father, Debendranath Tagore, an avid reader of Hafiz, was born in 1817. The year coincided with the birth of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the founder of the Aligarh Movement.

In 1875, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan established Moham-medan Anglo-Oriental College here, which later on came to be known as Aligarh Muslim University. An ardent so-cial reformer, he played a seminal role by laying the foun-dation of modern scientific education in undivided India.

Besides, he was among those early pio-neers who recognised the critical role of education in the empowerment of the poor and backward Muslim community.

I have come to this sacred place from far off Bengal. And I have come from an institution, which although came into existence more than a century later, was profoundly influenced by the ideals of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan.

For many reasons, the Muslims in West Bengal lagged far behind in eve-ry walk of life- socially, mentally and of course financially. Historically, partition prompted a large section of the commu-nity to migrate to East Pakistan, which is now known as Bangladesh. Many of them became frustrated and disillusioned. In the mid 80s of the last century, we felt strongly that education and education

alone could change the whole scenario of backwardness. With the aim to uplift the backward Muslim community in Bengal, we started an unchartered journey from Khalat-pur, a remote village in Howrah district. That’s how Al-Ameen Mission came into existence. The year was 1986.

It was an uphill task, but with resolute determination we trudged along. Al-Ameen’s journey began with only 7 students. The ideals of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and the trailblazing journey of Ramakrishna Mission showed us the way. If our niyat is noble, if we have self confidence, success is bound to come- we were absolutely sure about it.

Today, the resounding success of Al-Ameen Mission amply proves the correctness of our thought. Earlier, the participation of Muslims in higher education, particularly in professional courses was 2 to 3 per cent in our state, but now due to our constant endevour it has reached up to 20 to 30 per cent. But how was it possible? It was only possible through the generous support from our numerous well wishers and unstinting help from both

the Central and the State government. The Mission has now 70 branches throughout West Bengal as well as outside the state. We are a big family now consisting of 17 thousand resident students. Al-Ameen, meanwhile, has produced two thousand four hundred doctors and two thousand five hundred engineers. The total number of alumni is nearly 20 thousand. In many higher educa-tional institutions in India and abroad, there are sizeable numbers of alumni now. Many of them are also studying here in Aligarh. Some of them have also become teach-ers here. We are proud of them.

No doubt, we are elated to see so many students, who were part of a backward community not so long ago, are walking gloriously in so many institutions throughout the world. The achievements of Al-Ameen Mission are dis-cussed in the national level, bringing fame to the state.

Once upon a time, throughout the county, the name ‘Aligarh movement’ gained eminence in the education sector. Similarly, the path shown by Al-Ameen Mission has triggered off a movement, which is being aptly called as “Mission Movement” by general public as well as by numerous researchers globally. This movement has generated many more educational institutions through-out the state.

Therefore, I sincerely pay homage to that towering personality. We should remember pioneers like Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, who blazed a new trail by rationally think-ing about the backward people of South Asia. Here, I would like to quote Sir Syed who says—“When a nation becomes devoid of arts and learning, it invites poverty, and when poverty comes, it brings in its wake thousands of crimes.”

To conclude, I would like to say that literature is the mirror of the society we live in. This is something in-grained inside our society. Our poet has said ----‘িদেব আর

িনেব, িমলােব িমিলেব, যােব না িফের- they will give and take, intro-duce novelty, combine, but won’t go back.’

Like any sector of society, Education too takes in-spiration from different ideologies and advance further. There is always a constant mingling of thoughts and ideas. May be, someone who is not too old can provide new ideas, notions, conceptions to the society. Like you see new literary movements garnish different branches

of literature. We are optimist. We have full belief on the righteous-

ness of mankind. Those who will come after us will bring newer ideas. We welcome them in advance.

I hope the participants who would be discussing the trends of contemporary literature during these couple of days would definitely throw some new ray of light. We work amongst people in the practical field, empowering them, enhancing them through education. I once again hope that your discussions in the seminar will inspire us.

On behalf of Al-Ameen Mission, I sincerely extend my good wishes to all of you.”

Dr Amina Khatun thanked all the participants present on the dais and started the seminar. Among others, Prof Hakim Syed Zillur Rahman (Chairman, Ibn Sina Acade-my), Dr Taher H. Pathan (AMU), Dr Amitava Chakraborty (Delhi University), Prof S.N Zeba (AMU) and Prof. Syed Ahmad Ali were present. Prof. Masud Anwar Alavi, Dean of the Arts Department of the University gave the closing speech.

SK BASIRUDDIN WAS BORN in Kaithan under Katwa Police Station of Purba Bardhaman district. His father is Sk Matiur Rahaman and mother Muslima Bibi. He is the only son of his parents. Bardhaman is famous for its pad-dy production. It is an agricultural based district. There-fore, most of the inhabitants depend on agriculture to earn their livings. Basiruddin’s father too used to work as an agricultural labourer. He used to work day and night and nurtures a dream of changing his living condition.

Matiur Rahaman has three more brothers. Their fa-ther also earned his living working as an agricultural farmer. Matiur was his second son. His eldest son used to study from his maternal home. When Matiur was 14 years old, his father died. The burden of the family fell upon him. Because of this huge responsibility, Matiur and his younger brother could not study much, whereas their eldest brother became a graduate. Their youngest brother also became a science graduate but could not find a job. They inherited four-five bigha of land and a kutcha house from their late father. This land became their sole bread earner. But they had four sisters too. To bear the wedding expenses of these sisters, they also had to sell some portion of their land.

Basiruddin, from his early childhood, had seen the struggle of his father. He saw that to buy his study materi-als like textbooks, exercise books or pen, he had to wait for weeks. His father had no money. He could feel the helplessness of his father. There was one particular inci-dent, though, which is still poignant in his memory. Once, their economic condition was so abysmally bad that his father had to borrow money from a certain person. But he could not return that money in time. The person con-cerned made some derogatory remarks. This incident left a permanent mark in his mind because that person used to borrow money from them earlier. Studying under

kerosene lamp, he began to dream a life which could il-luminate his life. Well, not only his life but the life of his parents too. Basiruddin’s mother had not studied much. A semi-literate person, she used to stay awake late at night till his son completed his study. His parents never told him to do familial works. That in itself was a boon for his study.

His study began from the Kaithan Free Primary School. After that he was admitted to Kaithan Junior High School. Finishing it, he went to study in Koroi High School. Basiruddin was always meritorious. He used to stand first in each class. As a first boy all the teachers were particularly fond of him. There was no guidance from home. But the teachers were good enough to guide him all through. In this context, one person stood out. He was Sushilranjan Sinha. He was the headmaster of the

Junior High School. Basiruddin saw in him the shadow of an ideal teacher. He recollected two incidents. “While reading in class VI, I got a scholarship and also got a prize by successfully passing the District Science Talent examination. Another incident occurred which I remem-ber while I was reading in class VIII. I used to sit in the first bench of the class. On that day I sat on the third bench. Sushil Sir was taking Mathematics class. Seeing me sitting there, he said- Bashir Saheb, why are you sit-ting there? Everyone laughed at his mentioning me as ‘Saheb’. He again said- One day everyone would call him as Bashir Saheb. Maybe, he saw something in me. With all their wishes, I have travelled along in my life.” In 1999, he passed the class X examination with 81 per cent marks. He had the highest marks in the school. Ba-siruddin thought of admitting himself in the Christian Mis-sionary School at the Burdwan town. All meritorious stu-dents of the district go to that school. But in the end, he was not admitted there. The turning point of his life came at that precise moment. He went to Al-Ameen Mission.

His elder uncle used to teach in a Madarasah at Hooghly. He was the first person who motivated Basir-uddin to get admission in Al-Ameen Mission. But when they took initiative already the admission test had taken place. After the admission test, there is a provision to take some more students on the basis of good marks. Basiruddin took that opportunity. Along with his younger uncle, he came and gave the admission test and also ap-peared for the interview on the same day. He passed but could not get admitted. The reason was the tuition fee. It was well beyond their capacity. Coming from a peasant family, it was unlikely to pay fees every month. Also, Ma-tiur Saheb could not think of selling land for the sake of his son’s education as it was possessed under joint fam-

ily. So, Basiruddin had to come back. At that time, Has-mat Ali was a teacher of the Mission. He used to live near Basiruddin’s place and was well aware of their financial condition. He met the General Secretary and informed about the situation. The General Secretary said, he can get admission and his fees would be slashed into half, provided he ranks among the top five in the first terminal examination. Couple of months had already passed. The other students have begun their study. Basiruddin was not left behind because he had already started studying at home. He also ranked among the top five in the exam-ination so his fees were slashed into half. Basiruddin was studious. The ideal environment of the Mission became very conducive for his study. He fondly reminiscences that bygone days-

“We used to study relentlessly and the teachers were excellent. They were hard working. Amir Sir was one ex-ample, who used to work very hard. They were always prepared to help students. Apart from resident teach-ers, there were tutors who used to come from outside like Mrinalkanti Dwari Sir, Pravas Sir, Timirbaran Gan-guly Sir, Utpal Gain Sir. They were very good. Supervisor Maruf Azam Sir and hostel Super Hasem Sir monitored us well. There was strict routine and rule which were supposed to follow. And above all, there was Secretary Sir. He did not teach us but used to spend most of his time in the Mission. He used to go back to his home late at night. He was passionate in building the infrastructure of the Mission and used to feed us dreams– dreams that would inspire us from the core. He used to say, one day you will achieve big. You will roam all through the globe. The students of the Mission would serve the human kind. Today, numerous students of the Mission are working in every part of the world. The dream has come true.”

Whatever comes in life, give your best. One should not forget to dream and honestly follow it. The Mission has taught us to work for the welfare of people. Our work will be to construct a better civilisa-tion. Basiruddin’s work, his viewpoint has proved that he has truly become a global citizen.

In 2001, Basiruddin passed the HS with 78.01 per cent marks. At that time, the Mission had only one branch in Khalatpur. The girls’ campus had just begun. There were about 50 students in the batch. Each of them is well established today. Syed Akhter Ali passed engineering from Jadavpur University and is now settled in Oman. Ershad Habib, another Engineer, is in United States. Mo-stak Ali has settled in Australia. He is also an Engineer. So is Mir Hossain. Abdul Rashid, another Engineer, is also in United States now. Hibzul Ali Khan, whom we have covered in this column earlier, was the first doctor who cracked the JEE on the running year. Also Rohan Kuddus was there. Basiruddin too cracked the JEE on the running year like Hibzul. His rank was around 1100. His choice was to study Software Engineering. But with that rank, it was hard to find by in West Bengal. So he went to National Institute of Technology in Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh. Earlier, in this institution Apel Haque, a student of Al-Ameen Mission, had studied. So, Basir-uddin made up his mind to study there. While studying B.Tech, he did not have financial problems because the Mission arranged GD Scholarship for him from the Pa-taka Industries. He passed the B.Tech in 2005. Most of his friends got jobs from on campus interview. He too had the opportunity of getting one. But he did not like it and went to Bangalore for better prospect. There he ap-peared for numerous interviews in different companies

and landed in NetApp, an American company which has a Bangalore of-fice with an attractive salary. Besides software, this company also worked on hardware. Basiruddin used to work on Storage. He worked in that company for about six and half years and rose to Senior Member Technical Staff Level 4. During his tenure there, he also com-pleted his M.S degree in Software Sci-ence from Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Rajasthan. After six and half years of work, the company wanted him to relocate to US. But he was a bit perplexed. Was there anything new he could learn from the company?

In 2010, the British government ini-tiated a special working visa for skilled workers from abroad. Basiruddin took that opportunity and applied. He got a visa for three years but stayed with NetApp for another year. But to learn something new, he has to join a new company. With this aim, he moved to UK and joined HP. He worked there for two years. Earlier, Storage management re-quired magnetic devices and it used to heat up easily. For that reason, fan was needed to cool it off. Then flash technol-ogy came. Memory card and Pen drive

depend on this technology. Flash technology can store large hyper-scale data in a compact place. To know it better, Basiruddin left HP and joined world renowned US company Violin Systems. He worked there for two years but left that cushy job and formed his own company in 2017 in UK. His company, BA Infotech Limited provides expertise to four companies including Violin Systems.

Meanwhile, Basiruddin has bought a house in Brack-nell, West London. He lives there with his family and has also got citizenship. It is worthwhile to note that while most of the engineers have settled with cushy jobs abroad, Ba-siruddin went on a different path. He has set an example. His present target is to expand the base of his company and create job opportunities. He is not a job seeker, but job giver. He is perhaps the only engineer from Al-Ameen Mission, who has established a company abroad and also earned citizenship. From a nondescript village of West Bengal to United Kingdom; Basiruddin had an incredible journey throughout. Relentlessly, he chased a dream. He said, “First, be a good human being. Secondly, work hard. Whatever comes in life, give your best. One should not forget to dream and honestly follow it. Secretary Sir used to make us dream. That soaring dream was boundless, limitless. The Mission has taught us to work for the welfare of people. Our work will be to construct a better civilisa-tion.” Basiruddin’s work, his viewpoint has proved that he has truly become a global citizen. n

Secretary sir used to feed us dreams– dreams that would inspire us from the core. He used to say, one day you will achieve big. You will roam all through the globe. The students of the Mission would serve the human kind. Today, numer-ous students of the Mission are working in every part of the world. The dream has come true.
